great show, disappointing packaging 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this after selling my boxed sets. I wish I had just kept them. The packaging consists of a cardboard box with a cardboard "book" that has cheap cardboard sleeve inserts for the dvds so I had to buy a new case to put the dvds in to prevent scratching (if you own the Sex and the City dvd collection its almost the same concept), the ribbon that lifts the "book" out of the box became detached right away and I notice creasing that developed in the cardboard pages which makes me think they will eventually wear out and tear the pages apart. Bonus features were very disappointing, I have the Sex and the City dvd collection and they had better bonus features. There could have been montages, farewell colllections, video clips, award show scenes or something. No interviews with James Gandolfini at all! I just think HBO went cheap considering the status and impact that this show had. Whaddya gonna do about it though right?

No way... 1 out of 5 stars.

Being a loyal fan of "The Sopranos", I've purchased EVERY SINGLE SEASON and BOTH SOUNDTRACK CDs...including BOTH PARTS of SEASON 6 on Blu-Ray (even though I had them already on regular DVD). Now we have the entire set plus extras...not even Blu-Ray??? No, thanks. Even if this is released on Blu-Ray one day (as it should have been NOW), I may just pass on it...unless I win the lottery. Still, this is really bad marketing for such a great show. Rip-off!

59 bux well spent 5 out of 5 stars.

The first TV series since Seinfeld and Married With Children that I waited for. Checked the schedule. And waited for. Didn't see it originally on HBO, so I waited for my local cable to schedule it. Watched every episode until about the last 9 and then...bada bing....nothing. I chased it around the remote [formerly known as the "dial"] for weeks. Ok. Ok.
Not in the least bit disappointed. I think those final shows were among the best.
I think of The Sopranos as a combination Soap Opera/Crime Series. To my knowledge, that was never even done in the movies.
I'va had reservations about what I surmise [based upon 621 viewings of "Goodfellas"] to be flaws in writing and concept: (1) Why would a "Boss" (a 5 o'clock News celebrity) drive up in his own car, looking exactly like himself, using his real name, to a Pschologist's office where he's expected to pour his guts out? (2) Why would he openly display the discord in his own home, to his "Crew"? Why would he even *think* Divorce in his world? (3) Why would his Daughter be allowed to roam unprotected through a rough section of town in her Social Worker Intern role? (4) How would "Cleaver" have even gotten past the conference stage? Also, I don't understand all the footage inside toilets; other bits of business which make the viewer want to look away.
Not all of the above criticisms are really reflected in the final nine, though.
The DVD quality is awesome. And if I say it's awesome, considering my ancient entertainment system, it's gotta be. The viewer obviously has the chance with this boxed-set to watch the show muninterrupted by the commercials (more violent than the show), and so it takes on a more *movie* feel.
Each Disc has one running commentary, with a total of five voices. The voice of "Uncle Junior" is the most impressive. A very insightful, and moving dialogue. He's not particulary emotive, but his calm and cool technique only enhances the detail.
I was disappointed that Lorraine Bracco did not have a Commentary. (Gotta check the other packages). "Dr. Melfi", like "Junior", is a very soft-spoken character, an interesting counterpoint to the often explosive behavior of the other principals.
I'm not comfortable with how the Dr. and The Boss ended. Ultimately, she was to blame for not doing better research on a situation that could only work against her...and society. She basically slams the door on Tony...he replaces the torn out recipe page from the magazine in the waiting room...and leaves.
Not to be overcritical of this amazing series, but I wish that a small romance would have developped with them. Although, on a deeper level, it was a "telepathic" romance. She expressed to *her* Advisor that, yes, in the beginning, she was taken by Tony's masculinity. The fan can decide if that feeling grew even sronger.
Features include the above-mentioned Commentaries, plus a "mock" Documentary on the making of "Cleaver", and the making of the music soundtrack to the show (David Gray's comments about the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Elvis Costello are brilliant and can make their fans swell with pride).

Soprano's Season Six, Part One DVD 5 out of 5 stars.

The one missing piece to my entire collection. In stock, delivered quickly. Great service and availability, as always!

The Beginning of the End 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Season 6 Part One of the Sopranos begins to set the scene for the series finale. At least that's how I viewed it. We got to see some older storylines that hadn't been brought up in years (Christopher's quest to make a screen play) come out of the shadows. We also begin to see characters growing up and changing due to recent events, like AJ handeling his fathers coma. We see the tensions with NY start coming to a head, a showdown, which is where it's been headed all along.

I thought Season 6 was a strong season. Not my favorite, as I still felt the Chris storyline weak. I didn't mind the Vito, it was sort of funny and unexpected, but yes maybe it didn't have to go on for so long. And I admit that AJ gets on my nerves more and more. But I found the relationship between NY & NJ fascenating, I couldn't look away. The tension is building and building with each episode until you are just dying to know how it ends!!

While it's sad to see this series coming to an end, it's good to see it building into an exciting finish.

NO Closed Captioning 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

First, let me say that I'm an avid Sopranos fan. I put the first-season DVD on my Amazon wish list and was thrilled when I was given it as a gift. I have a hearing problem and always use closed captioning while watching TV and videos. I have been disappointed to find that some DVDs that list CC don't actually have it. Unfortunately, The Sopranos: First Season is one of them. Yes, I do know how to use the DVD menu to select closed-captioning, but the only options listed are for quality of sound or the languages Spanish or French. Since my TV is always set for CC, that shouldn't be the problem. Consequently, I have to turn up the volume considerably, but still miss some of the dialogue.

Perfect 5 out of 5 stars.

Its the sopranos, its #1, its perfect. Amazon is the only place to get a good deal on it.

Just watch it! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Season 2 of the Sopranos is much like season 1, filled with a lot of character development. We also get to see more about Tony's career choice and how it affects him. We also get introduced to some new characters, the least of which is his memorable sister Janice.

Season 2 the cast and writers seemed to hit a groove, a familiarity and the show just flows along much more naturally. By season 2 I was fully addicted to the show. Getting to watch an episode or two each night was what I looked forward to all day long.

One of the best TV shows of all time. A stellar cast. Don't miss out! Buy it, rent it, borrow it from a friend...just watch it!

The DVD Value...You Already Know the Show is Great 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Each season of The Sopranos has many fine merits, and the second season is one of the best. It has the break-the-mold elements that separated it from other television fare with the betrayal by Pussy and the unexpected hit on Christopher. It has one of the darkest characters ever on television in Richie Aprile and one of the best narcissistic psychos in Janice Soprano. It also features some of the best Sopranos comedy in From Where to Eternity (when Christopher tells Tony and Paulie Walnuts that hell is an Irish bar where it's St. Patrick's Day every day and the Irish patrons win every throw of the dice in the eternal craps game happening there).

The DVDs do add a lot of value for a committed Sopranos fan. The directorial commentary is uneven, with some directors really telling you detail you'd find riveting and others just giving a basic play-by-play that you could get just by watching the show. I found about half of the commentary really interesting. For me, a strong fan, that was enough to warrant buying the DVDs. For the less committed fan, use Netflix and rent the discs.

Beginning to fade 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Upon the suggestion of my soon to be father-in-law, my fiancée and I embarked upon the Odyssey that is The Sopranos. He loved it to such an extent that he began to emulate specific cultural traits of the characters. While my fiancée and I will incorporate certain "catch phrases" into our conversation we didn't take it that far.
At this point we're at the beginning of Season 5 but all the seasons' are starting to blend together. This may be high praise in the sense that the overarching storylines are so well entwined that seams are non existent or this may be damning in the sense that it's all the same and nothing stands out.
Whichever the case may be, this can be said; for these two viewers the series started off great, got better with season 2 when we admitted our commitment to it, stalled with season 3 or at least maintained itself but began to boor a bit with season 4. Of course, the outrageous highway robbing, price gouging cost of the later seasons jumping to $100.00 dollars a pop in stores has left a bad taste in my mouth just for the principle of the issue. Even Amazons discount, as good as it is, is still pricey for a series that boasts only 13 episodes per season, most of them under an hour. Don't even get me started on the price of the 6th season which has been divided into 2 boxed sets. The DVD distributors certainly took a page from the playbook of the characters being depicted in this series.

Great Show 5 out of 5 stars.

Not the best season of the show but a must have if you wanna finish the series.

Don't miss this show! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Season 5 of the Sopranos brings about some exciting changes and developments for many of the characters. It is entertaining and enthralling to watch. It kept me up late at night, just to watch "one more episode". Yes, officially addicted.

What I enjoy about the Sopranos is that each season they bring about some new characters, most of which are great "villians". It keeps the show fresh and interesting. Here we meet Tony's cousin, played by Steve Buscemi.

I can't say enough good things about this series, but as I'm reviewing all 6.2 seasons right now, I guess I am running out of original things to say for each. But I just wanted to take the time and add my opinion for each so that each prospective viewer can add my vote to the count that says "Don't miss this show!"

Fantastic. 5 out of 5 stars.

The best series ever. Extremely well written. Intriguing characters. I've seen every one and they are awesome. It's worth buying every season. You can watch them over and over again. Great til the end.

Stroke of genius 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Wow, season 3 of the Sopranos is a memorable one for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the previous 2 seasons, but by season 3 every storyline, every line that was muttered by a character, every shocking or subtle development, was a stroke of genius.

In this season, the cast and writers alike, SHINE. Here we really start getting to the meat of things. And it's nothing if it's not like riding a fast-paced thrilling rollercoaster. One you will not want to get off of.

I highly recommend the Sopranos series. I am not a big action or mafia movie goer, nor am I big into the violence...but something within this show is bigger than all of that. Something about family and a persons will to survive. Much of what these characters go through, we all experience on some level or other. Don't miss out on this fantastic show!!

Blown Away ! 5 out of 5 stars.

Am watching this magnificent story on DVD box sets for 1st time . Truely unbeleivably good .Brought up on quality BBC Docs/Dramas but these Sopranos are as good as anything I've ever seen on TV or cinema before .

All i want to say is thank you HBO for saving us from Reality TV shows & morons earning millions from avewrage interview shows . This is worth seeing again & again .

Just let me share one master comic line with you - AJ junior saying to the Westpoint like Military Scheool Commander - So why do you military & spy types put the '0' in the time ?? This after queryingwhat 05.30 meant on the Whiteboard' . Fabulous .

Sopranos Box Set 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The set I bought was the international edition. The discs aren't consistent in features, such as what each episode is about. Some of the discs have some weird Chinese characters as subtitles and some of the English subtitles make absolutely no sense whatsoever. Still, all the episodes are there, waiting to be watched. The price was why I bought them here at Amazon because the price at HBO is totally ridiculous.

Sopranos Review 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I received this product in a timely fashion.

I did receive an email from DVD World advising that if I cancelled my order placed via Amazon, I would get a discount. I did not appreciate that email.

The DVD's submitted were not of great quality. It appears as though the DVD's were recorded and were not original. I was expecting HD DVD's of digital quality and these DVD's were not well made. I knew they might be bootlegged when Adrianna appeared on the cover of Season 6 (she died in Season 5).

I was initially attracted to the price and the old adage goes "you get what you pay for."

A Masterpiece 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I obviously don't own this yet but own all boxsets up till now and having watched the new episodes a number of times it is a superb climax to what is possibly the greatest TV show while not hitting the highs of series five it still remains quality throughout with the last two episodes in particular being fantastic.

Thanks HBO for the series...but 4 out of 5 stars.

Greetings to all Sopranos fans out there. I really wish not to spoil anything for your folks while reading this but as a fan i can assure you disapointment.

i had actually waited till the BD version of season 6 parts 1 & 2 came out. Never read or bothered to ask anyone what happend in the end of this amazing saga.

Just today i finished watching both parts and honeslty i was shocked by disapointment on 2 levels:
1) the ending seemed like not an ending but some leaway for possibly bringing it back, (wishful thinking)
2) very poor special features on the last disk. (even the commentay was not there for the last episode.)

i mean i am still a fan and will be forever but i dont know i felt like ...there is still something. The cat staring @ Chris's picture @ the Badda Bing back room and the way T sort of ....well i will stop here.

Thanks HBO for all these years of an amazing series. It was terrific but the ending episode did not do it for me. I hope they release some sort of speical edition work around the episoeds or something. I feel there is something missing still even after: MADE IN AMERICA!
