A Quick Comment On Each Film 5 out of 5 stars.

Here are a few quick notes on each movie in this collection to let you know what to expect, as well as a ranking on a five-star scale:

Star Trek: The Motion Picture: An interesting plot, but takes itself too seriously to be a fun film. (***)

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: Very emotional drama, character development, and intense action make this a solid film in step with the original Star Trek "cannon". (*****)

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock: What the film lacks in overall plot it makes up for in emotional tension. (****)

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home: A comedic genius; light-hearted all around and full of laughs. (*****)

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier: The "search for God" plot proves to be unfruitful, while the main villain does not create credible tension. (**)

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country: A sort of futuristic re-telling of the United States/Russia relationship that hits all the right buttons to create high drama. (*****)

Star Trek Generations: Filled with iconic moments, but underachieves in the execution of nearly all of them. (***)

Star Trek: First Contact: An action-packed adventure film that exploits the Picard/Borg relationship adeptly and uses the Next Generation ensemble crew to their fullest. (*****).

Star Trek: Insurrection: Despite delving into races never before seen on the show, this film combines a sound human-interest plot with the returning Next Generation ensemble cast, who are great as usual. (****).

Star Trek: Nemesis: This film is the reason why the Next Generation cast was put to pasture, due to contrived drama and weak plotlines. (*).

Jean Luc Picard Collection 4 out of 5 stars.

Its really great, but I would have chosen Attached over Drumhead as one of the episodes along with Darmok and Inner Lightwhich are fantastic. I think it would have assured a 5 star rating to the collection. Nevertheless, it's well worth the buy.

Excellent Episode Choices but Where is BoBW? 5 out of 5 stars.

I think Jean Luc Picard is one of the best characters ever developed for television. I, personally, feel he's the best of all Trek Captains (Kirk fans, please set phasers to stun, I like him too, but Picard to me is the better of the two). This set picks some excellent episodes that highlight the outstanding acting of Mister Patrick Stewart. However - where is the excellent "Best of Both Worlds (parts 1 and 2)". A Picards set without them, that doesn't seem right.

Arguable choices. Still a very good collection. 4 out of 5 stars.

Clearly a Picard-focused retrospective should include some Borg action. Given that a special collection of Borg episodes was envisioned, I understand the decision to stick with no Borg content on this DVD. Even so, a switch of some content for the masterful "Best of Both Worlds" would have made this a five-star collection for me. At least Q made an appearance.

Not all of the episodes resonate with me. It's a diverse set, from straight bottle shows ("Drumhead") to alien worlds ("Darmok") to the holodeck ("Big Goodbye") and even Earth ("Family").

"The Inner Light" easily stands above the rest as one of the finest shows of any Star Trek series.

As a Q fan, I enjoyed "Tapestry", with Q as guardian angel Clarence to Picard's George Bailey. Not exactly, of course, since it was the alternate path not taken vs. never been born.

Jimmy Stewart appeared again in "Drumhead", where Picard sounded like "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" with his passionate remarks and standing up for rights. This show is decent, if a bit heavy-handed.

Count me in the minority for not praising "Darmok" as highly as others. This one could have been expanded into a fine two-part episode that developed the interesting core idea more. As it was, the story seemed rushed and a bit derivative, even though the two never came to blows "Arena"-style.

"The Big Goodbye" was TNG's "Piece of the Action". What a difference between Kirk and Picard in those two shows! I also liked the inkling of a potential relationship between Picard and Beverly here, from early in the series. Very stylish costumes, too.

"Sarek" nicely brings Spock's father around for another turn, with a good take on what might happen to an aging Vulcan's mind, particularly when it involves the loss of control.

"Family" doesn't stand that well out of context and was rather predictable. I may have trimmed the Worf thread and spent more minutes on Picard and his brother.

I would gladly have traded the bonus documentary, which has nothing really to do with Picard or TNG other than Stewart narrates, for another episode.

Kudos to Paramount for making a solid collection at an affordable price.

    Editorial Review:

    Star Trek: Generations
There were only two ways for "classic Trek" cast members to appear in a movie with the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation: either Capt. Kirk and his contemporaries would have to be very, very old, or there would be some time travel involved in the plot. Since geriatric heroes aren't very exciting, Star Trek: Generations unites Capt. Kirk (William Shatner) and Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) in a time-jumping race. When the just-retired Kirk is happily trapped in the timeless purgatory of the Nexus, Picard must convince him to leave this artificial comfort zone and confront Dr. Soran (Malcolm McDowell), the madman who will threaten billions of lives. Passing the torch to the Next Generation with dignity and entertaining adventure, the movie isn't going to please everyone with its somewhat hokey plot, but it still ranks as a worthy big-screen launch for Picard and his stalwart crew.

    Star Trek: First Contact
Even-numbered Star Trek movies tend to be better, and this one (number eight in the popular movie series) is no exception--an intelligently handled plot involving the galaxy-conquering Borg and their attempt to invade Earth's past, alter history, and "assimilate" the entire human race. Time travel, a dazzling new Enterprise, and capable direction by Next Generation alumnus Jonathan Frakes makes this one rank with the best of the bunch. Capt. Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his able crew travel back in time to Earth in the year 2063, where they hope to ensure that the inventor of warp drive (played by James Cromwell) will successfully carry out his pioneering flight and precipitate Earth's "first contact" with an alien race. Sharply conceived to fit snugly into the burgeoning Star Trek chronology, First Contact leads to a surprise revelation that marks an important historical chapter in the ongoing mission "to boldly go where no one has gone before."

    Star Trek: Insurrection
Star Trek fans were decidedly mixed in their reactions to this, the ninth big-screen feature in Paramount's lucrative Trek franchise, but die-hard loyalists will appreciate the way this Next Generation adventure rekindles the spirit of the original Trek TV series while combining a tolerable dose of New-Agey philosophy with a light-hearted plot. This time out, Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his executive crew must transport to a Shangri-la-like planet to see why their android crewmate Data (Brent Spiner) has run amuck in a village full of peaceful Ba'ku artisans who--thanks to their planet's "metaphasic radiation"--haven't aged in 309 years. Many humorous asides make this film as entertaining as it is slightly disappointing. Without the laughs, this is a pretty routine entry in the franchise, with no real surprises, a number of plot holes, and the overall appearance of a big-budget TV episode. --Jeff Shannon

    Editorial Review:

Spanning two decades and countless light years of interstellar adventure, Star Trek: The Motion Pictures Collection is a testament to the enduring goodwill of Gene Roddenberry's optimistic sci-fi concept. Long before Star Wars sparked an explosion of big-screen science fiction, Roddenberry had planned a second Star Trek TV series; the project fizzled, but its pilot script evolved into the first film in Paramount's most lucrative movie franchise. Despite its sluggish pace and bland "pajama" costuming, Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) offered a welcomed reunion of the "Classic Trek" cast, packed with Douglas Trumbull's still-dazzling special effects. Trekkers were even more ecstatic when The Wrath of Khan (1982) revived the spirit of the original series, even though director Nicholas Meyer was a Trek neophyte. With Leonard Nimoy directing, The Search for Spock (1984) began where Khan left off, with a thrilling (albeit contrived) obligation to resurrect the formerly ill-fated Mr. Spock.

A box-office smash, Nimoy's The Voyage Home (1986) is the franchise's most accessible adventure--a high point offset by William Shatner's comparatively dreadful Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (1989). Meyer (and his penchant for quoting Shakespeare) returned for The Undiscovered Country (1991), a conspiracy thriller that put the series back on track, inspiring fans to invoke the "even number" rule in rating their franchise favorites. Generations (1994) gracefully passed the torch to TV's The Next Generation, bidding farewell to Captain Kirk with honor and integrity intact. Highlighted by the evolving humanity of Brent Spiner's android Lt. Cmdr. Data, First Contact (1996) explored Star Trek history with a logical (hint) surprise encounter, and Insurrection (1998) provided an adequate expansion of the successful NextGen series. Taken as a whole, these ten films demonstrate the consistent vitality of Roddenberry's original vision, stoking any Trekker's appetite for "ongoing missions" in Nemesis and beyond. --Jeff Shannon

    Editorial Review:

Devoted Star Trek fans will surely cite the "even number" rule in evaluating the Original Crew Movie Collection, but all six of these films qualify as rousing entertainment. Undeniably, the even-numbered films in Paramount's lucrative Trek franchise tended to be the best, as demonstrated by the superiority of The Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home, and The Undiscovered Country. And yet each film has something to offer die-hard Trekkers, beginning with the epic-scale wonders of the first Motion Picture (presented here as a two-disc special edition). Evolving from Gene Roddenberry's aborted attempt at a second Star Trek TV series, the effects-laden Motion Picture divided fans while proving that Star Trek had a promising big-screen future. Nicholas Meyer's The Wrath of Khan made good on that promise, reviving the Star Trek spirit and proving, in the case of Mr. Spock, that beloved characters "never really die." It's widely regarded as the best of these half-dozen features.

With its deadly Klingon confrontation, the Leonard Nimoy-directed Search for Spock was a thrilling (albeit contrived) excuse for Spock's inevitable resurrection, and its somber tone was readily countered by the Earth-based humor of Nimoy's The Voyage Home, combining a planetary crisis with a lively--and phenomenally popular--time-travel plot line. Unfortunately, William Shatner then lobbied for the director's chair, and The Final Frontier--an uneasy mixture of cheesy humor and grandiose themes--was the regrettable outcome. Paramount rallied by inviting Nicholas Meyer to repeat his Khan success, and Meyer rose to the occasion with the sharply scripted thrills of The Undiscovered Country. By ending the film with an official signature send-off from the "classic Trek" cast, the original crew brought their big-screen legacy to a graceful and upbeat conclusion, setting the stage for a transitional adventure in Star Trek: Generations. --Jeff Shannon

Well, not really bootlegged, but not great either.... 3 out of 5 stars.
11 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Actually, the previous reviewer is mistaken (I'm sure honestly) about the "bootleg" claim. From my understanding, (I am half Asian, and have many relatives and friends that live and do business there) Asia has their own DVD manufacturers who purchase rights to reproduce these DVD's on lower quality (and often lower GB space -- therefore, they may be compressed and have reduced picture quality and sound) discs at reduced prices. It's legal for these vendors to sell them in China and over the internet from their own base of operations IN China, even to US vendors who may legally resell them here in the U.S. Sounds great, but in my own experience, these dvd's are not for the serious collector. If you just love the show and want to watch them over and over, for less money, these are a good deal, IF you can find a vendor that gives you, say, at least 30 days to look these over and make sure that they all work properly ENOUGH to enjoy the show -- which is sometimes hard to find. There are glitches, skips, and freezes (gets stuck on one frame and then will not play for a whole chapter or two) and sometimes the ending of an episode or two is missing. It depends what you can tolerate. If you've already seen the entire series and remember how they generally play out, perhaps you can deal with it,... I do. I was lucky and am okay with my DS9 which had only one problem,... it was missing a disc from season two, which happens to be the one with all the special features. I caught the error in time and it was sent out to me (yes, I had to pay for the return shipping). Otherwise it was in perfect working order.

If you're on an extremely tight budget (like me) and must have the series at the best price, just be sure to check it out thoroughly, immediately, and make returns ASAP -- which can be hard work for an entire series. Now when I purchase one of these (and beleive me they make several TV series), I check it by forwarding to each chapter and letting it play for 30 seconds apiece, until the last chapter, which I let play all the way through to insure the ending is intact. If it doesn't get stuck for more than a second or two, and I feel I can deal with the quality, -- it's a keeper and I go on to check the next episode/disk.

If you can afford the US version, however, or you like your stuff to all be perfect and brand new (the type that never shops at yard sales, consignment stores, Good Will, etc.) or you consider yourself a serious collector, get the official US version, instead.

Oh, and one last note,.... you can get these much cheaper than $300 on the competitor's auction site. Sorry, vendor, but you need to have more reasonable prices.

This is a complete collection of all episodes for seasons 1-7 spanning 47 DVD's an Official Authorized Chinese release version. Closed Captioning for the hearing impaired. The set includes the full English Dolby Digital 5.1 Soundtrack. The chinese subtitles will only display if you choose to see them from the menu screen of each DVD. SERIES DESCRIPTION The third Star Trek series concerns Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), commander of the starship Deep Space Nine, who discovers the first known stable wormhole--a virtual shortcut through space that leads from the Alpha Quadrant to the Gamma Quadrant on the other side of the galaxy. The Gamma Quadrant is governed by the Dominion, a group led by the Changelings--a race of shapeshifters which counts DS9 crew member Odo (Rene Auberjonois) among its numbers. The Dominion has become a violent force in the galaxy, and the Deep Space Nine and its crew has become the only hope in upholding the way of life established by the Federation.
