T.C. and the Gang are Great! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was just a kid when Top Cat became the second prime-time cartoon show, and couldn't wait to watch it. The Flintstones broke the ice in '60, and TC and crew came on in '61. It is a real tragedy they didn't make more Top Cat, because of the two, I and many others prefer this feline take on the old Sgt. Bilko show.

The quality of the video is fantastic--and it's GREAT seeing them all in color. (I had no idea Choo-Choo was PINK)... of course it was only done that way to create all the right shades of gray/white/black for a show that only aired in black and white--but in color it's even better. The audio could be a little louder, unless it's just that my DVD player doesn't pick up the audio track that well; I have to have the volume almost to full 100 to get it clear across my living room. Other than that, I split my sides watching the antics of TC and company, and am amazed at how much I remember even after not having seen this show in over 40 years! I KNEW sooner or later he'd call officer Dibble--Officer Dribble... I distinctly remembered it... and he did. Memories, Memories!
Benny the Ball, Chooch, Fancy, Brain, Spook, and TC, they're all here and what fun it is to share them with my grandkids who love them as much as I did. It's SO refreshing to be able to show them cartoons that do NOT have kids who hate their parents, dysfunctional families that are rife with obscenities, and sexual innuendo... none of that.. just good clean wholesome...and funny entertainment. Love it.

Oh, and the extra features on each disc are fun as well... interviews with the voices of Leo De Lyon who was both Spook and Brain, (Am I just spinning wheels, or was there a character called Leo the Lion, and Hardy Har Har?---could this be the guy who was THAT voice too? LOL) and in another one, the guy who was Chooch's voice, and even Top Cat himself. They also have one episode on each disk where you can hear them discussing the show as it's played (this is NOT the regular show--but an extra)... and it's really enlightening hearing all the commentary.

I was leery of the investment at first, and still rue the fact that there aren't a whole lot more episodes of this wonderful show available. That said, anyone who came up in the era of those great Hanna-Barbera cartoon shows like Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Deputy Dawg, Flintstones, Jetsons,...all great FAMILY fun... will just love TC and the Gang!

A classic! 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought this because I loved watching these when I was a kid. Dick Van Dyke is a classic comedian. I like old shows that are hilarious without being crude. I really only have two complaints. (1) These DVDs are not close-captioned. I also own the "I Love Lucy" complete series set and they are close-captioned, but were released by Paramount so maybe that makes a difference. The "format" on the product page doesn't list close-captioned for either set, but the "I Love Lucy" set is close captioned and "Dick Van Dyke show" is not...a little misleading (2) A few days after I purchased the set, it dropped in price by $35. I was disappointed, but it is still a good buy.

Mission: Impossible Goes In New Directions 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Season Three of Mission Impossible had major upheavals in which the main writers of the series abruptly quit. The show survived this by brining in Paul Playdon as lead writer and Stanley Kallis as Producer. Season Four began with even more potentially damaging changes as Martin Landau and Barbara Bain also abruptly left the show. To replace Landau's "Rollin Hand" character who wore masks and impersonated other people, Leonard Nimoy was brought in as "Paris" (we never learn his first name). Nimoy is not the actor Landau is, and he complained later that he was not given enough challenging roles, but he was adequate. His best performances were in the episodes "Gitano" and "The Code" which otherwise were not among the best stories. Later in the season, lead writer Paul Playdon left the show due to exhaustion, along with Producer Stanley Kallis. In spite of this, the show continued to make fine entertaining episodes, in spite of the fact that no single leading lady actress was brought in to replace Barbara Bain's "Cinnamon Carter" character.
In two especially good episodes, "The Crane" and "The Submarine", the IM Force has to race the clock as intensive police cordons are zeroing in on them while they have to deceive a leader of a police state or break an "unbreakable" prisoner. On the whole, this season has as many fine episodes as do the preceding seaons, in spite of the difficulties the cast and crew faced. Highly recommended.

Editorial Review:

The head of the "Impossible Missions Force", a top-secret government group of operatives, starts a tape recorder and finds out about his latest assignment. Throughout most of the series, they would have to stop some petty dictator or powerful bad guy from whatever evil plot they had against the U.S. or Democracy in general. The elaborate use of electronic gadgetry, masters of disguise and detailed plans that require split-second timing made this tv show an "on the edge of your seater"!

It's Mission Impossible... not to admire this series. 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As a young boy growing up during the Cold War era- when air raid drills were routine -I couldn't wait to get home to watch this program. The fear of Soviet spies or a nuclear holocaust we very real and added to the intensity of this show, especially episodes like "The Photographer" where the IM force creates a haunting panorama of a destroyed landscape to, once again, psychologically fool their adversary.

Granted, by today's film standards some of these visual effects are mediocre or even poor, but again, the story lines and actors did a great job within the limits of technology and their budgets.

Even the now famous "Mission Impossible Theme" is so catching and perfect. However, I found it very interesting that this show, which often targeted the Soviets, slightly plagiarized that haunting melody from the Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Listen to the first movement of his Seventh Symphony and you'll here that deep pulsating bass line. Interesting.

However, this season has many episodes that I remember from my distant childhood and they did not disappoint. Therefore, despite the dated FX or extremely slow pace in some episodes, since they had to fill up an hour program, Mission Impossible was well written and was a template for many movies in the future...not to mention a school for many directors and actors. Highly recommended.

I'm NOT BUYING it PARAMOUNT CBS/DVD !!!!! - MUSIC REPLACED AGAIN!! : - ( 1 out of 5 stars.
20 of 22 people found this review helpful.

Well, let me say first you totally rip us off by not releasing FULL SEASON sets, splitting the shows into usually 2 volumes per season Times are tight man, we just can't afford split seasons anymore at the prices you charge! How come you don't do it to all the shows? It seems Mannix, Hawaii Five- 0, Gomer Pyle get full season sets, yet the Streets of San Francsisco and The Fugitive are split? What's the deal here? Second you rip us off again replacing the original music with, well let's be frank about it - it's JUNK!
My Three Sons had a fairly sophisticated soundtrack for a sitcom, and it played along with the characters, although the music in a sit com is not as imperative as a drama like "The Fugitive" which was horribly butchered musically, for the ridiculous amount we are paying for these things why can't we get the original music? AND ... why is this problem prevalent for the most part only to Paramount/CBS DVD products? Obviously there is a problem with your company's legal department - they are either too lazy to do the research to get the needed clearances for the music OR they are too afraid of SOMETHING... In any event whoever is in charge of the music NEEDS TO BE FIRED!!!! They should have been FIRED after the first part of SEASON 2 of the Fugitive was released! What a PR fiasco that was for you Paramount CBS/DVD! I mean come on a cheesy synthesizer? GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER OVER THERE and release titles with music intact, and full season sets --- then it would be a no brainer for those who are interested in your releases - we would just pre order them without wondering what sort of surprise is in store for us this time??!!! With the economy in such bad shape, nobody is going to take their chances anymore buying your products without knowing what they are getting ahead of time. OH, by the way *****(FIVE STARS for the the show's original content, but I am giving MINUS FIVE stars to the music replacement!)

Editorial Review:

MY THREE SONS is a delightful slice-of-life comedy about the American family. The series chronicles the life of the Douglas family; a seemingly simple premise that was a huge hit with audiences and a keystone of the TV family lineup in the ‘60s. Fred MacMurray delivers a standout portrayal as Steve Douglas, an aeronautical engineer and widower raising his three sons alone.

POOR protection for DVDs 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Warning, all 13 DVDs are stuffed in cheap cardboard slots. Most of my disks were scratched by their initial insertion. For the price I paid, they should have provided better protection for the disks.

Also, based on the length, these are edited episodes, they are about 3 minutes shorter than the standard 50's running time.

Days of old 5 out of 5 stars.

Product was just great. DVD quality was great. So good to watch something and not have to worry if my grandson came in the room. I grew up with the Lone Ranger and it was always a treat to listen to the radio and hear the the song come on. Brings back great memories of my child hood

Editorial Review:

THIS IS ***NOT*** A COMPLETE COLLECTION 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 10 people found this review helpful.

This is not a review of the series, which in my opinion is the greatest Crime Drama ever made. As for the VERY long-awaited DVD release, I've been Very disappointed. Stated in the fine print on the boxes, unfortunately Paramount/CBS decided to offer us an INCOMPLETE (missing episode(s)) and EDITED set. In addition, it's NOT-SO-SHARPLY "remastered". Compared to broadcast recordings, it doesn't appear to be remastered at all to me. I'm sure that Jack Lord, being the perfectionist he was about this show, would NOT approve.

If I like a show enough to want to collect it and to pay hundreds of $$$ for it, I expect a few minimum basic qualities. Those are: EVERY EPISODE, UNEDITED, and digitally remastered at least to the resolution at which it is noticeably clearer than my own recordings. This set is missing all of those essential qualities. So it seems VERY expensive to shell-out ($36 x 12 Seasons == $432) for it when I can record the same thing free. It's kind-of insulting for Paramount to offer an INCOMPLETE SET at that price.

Unless you don't get re-runs (you'd have to live in Mongolia) and you just can't wait to see the edited episodes they chose to include, it may be well worth just waiting another 2 years or so for the inevitable boxed set. Of course, a series this popular, will be offered in a boxed set (and for Half that price) after they've exhausted all the individual season sales, as we've seen every Christmas with even less popular series. Those always include "Previously Unreleased Episodes", "(Complete) Director's Cuts", and "High Resolution Digital Remastering", etc. to compel even those who paid $432 for the individual sets to buy it - Exactly what they're withholding from this set. And they always come packaged in some collectible tin or box. Maybe a die-cast Mercury in this case.

Editorial Review:

Filmed entirely on location in Hawaii, the show followed Jack Lord as he played Steve McGarrett, head of an elite state police unit investigating "organized crime, murder, assassination attempts, foreign agents, felonies of every type." James MacArthur played his second-in-command Danny ("Danno") Williams, with local actors playing members of the Five-O team.

This is the third season I have purchased and so far, it is as great as I remember it. The action is as I remember. One has to think to figure how some things are done in this program, unlike some of the cheap productions on TV today. I highly recommend this set.

The Actors Find Their Characters 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The lead actors have all found their characters by the second half of Season 2. They seem to wear their TV personas like comfortable old coats. For those of you who are not familiar with the radio series that gave rise to the TV encarnation, give special attention to the episode entitled "Skid Row". It will give you an idea of the kind of adult approach to the western for which it was famous. It was writing like this that set Gunsmoke apart from all other 50's westerns. I can't wait for the release of Season 3. I wish they would go back to the full season sets. I don't object to the increase in price, just to having the season broken up and the series' release delayed.

Editorial Review:

Marshal Matt Dillon is responsible for keeping the law and respectability in Dodge City in this western action-drama. Gunsmoke captured the courage, character and spirit of the Western Frontier.
