Trekkies 1 + 2 5 out of 5 stars.

Trekkies 1 is hilarious. Trekkies have the best sense of humour . Who could imagine golf fanatics poking fun at themselves this way. And on the serious side, the amount of charity and good will that trekkies give every day is inspiring. As a trekkie for over 30 yrs, I laughed, cryed, was slighly cringing at times but overall had fun. And if you're not a trekkie, find out what it all means. It's not so scary. You'll be surprised!!

Great for Trekkies or Trekkers 5 out of 5 stars.

Since I'm some what of a Trekkie or Trekker, depending on your preference, I enjoyed both DVD's. I definately recommend them if watch or have watched Star Trek.

Great look at Star Trek fans 5 out of 5 stars.

Some of the people shown in these documentaries are a little over the top. But for the most part it shows the dedication the fans have to the ideals of Star Trek and the positive impact the shows have had on people's lives. I love that Denise goes all around the world interviewing fans. Star Trek isn't just an American show. It belongs to the world.

A must have for any Star Trek fan 5 out of 5 stars.

I enjoyed these DVDs, I took long enough to finally buy them but Star Trek is something I have been involved with since that first show on television. The cast interviews are worth the cost of the DVDs.

Those who haven't always been Star Trek fans will learn a lot about the Phenomenon that is Star Trek. Not only did its creator inspire a believe in better future for mankind, it inspired the people who made that future possible. Our technology today owes a lot to the inspiration that was then science fiction, but is today science fact.

You won't be disappointed in my estimation IF you buy them.

Where no fan has gone before... 5 out of 5 stars.

"Trekkies" is a fun, affectionate documentary about dedicated Trekkies. Denise Crosby (related to Bing, who starred as Tasha Yar) narrates. It's a whimsical travelogue in the world of Star Trek fandom. These Trekkies not only collect the movies- they want to live as members of the Federation of Planets on Earth.

There's the Whitewater juror who came every day to the trial in her Star Trek uniform. There are people who study Klingon. There's a dentist whose office looks straight off the Enterprise. Denise Crosby and Brent Spiner (Data) are surprised-and a little flattered- when they discover erotic depictions of their characters. (We also learn that Spiner is a Texan, complete with Southern drawl) Slash fiction gets an interesting sidenote. A middle-aged woman, with her face shaded as if she were in the Witness Protection Program, talks about writing erotic stories about the escapades of Kirk and Spock. Times have changed. One wonders if,thanks to Frodo&Sam,Capt. Jack Sparrow&Will Turner,as well as Angel&Spike, this woman would've been "out and proud."

"Trekkies" is an enjoyable excursion into the Star Trek subculture. Pop in the dilithium crystals, hit warp speed, sit back and enjoy!

Editorial Review:

Tailored to the most hard-core Star Trek fans, Mind Meld gets you up close and personal with the stars of the original television series. Its premise? Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner sitting together and having a quiet, earthy chat about old times. There isn't much new information about the show--though old cast resentments are addressed--but viewers learn a great deal about the personal lives of everyone's favorite spacemen. The two discuss the pressures of filming a weekly show and the difficulties of maintaining one's dignity as an actor while wearing pointy ears. The personalities of both men shine through and it becomes obvious why they were cast as they were; Nimoy really is more thoughtful and reserved, while Shatner is extroverted and showy. The best part of Mind Meld is witnessing the genuine fondness the two men share for each other. It's clear that they really were (and are) best friends, even when the cameras stopped rolling. --Ali Davis

Big Disappointment...Don't Bother 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

After loving Trekkies I, we ordered Trekkies 2, an obviously PC response to fan backlash from the hilarious portrayal of Trek fans in Trekkies I. Trekkies 2 is a yawn...slow and boring with very few colorful fans other than updates on megafans featured in Trekkies I.

Another Heaping Helping Of Trekkies 4 out of 5 stars.

The first "Trekkies" film managed to dig up some rather odd characters to give the average person an idea of what makes up a fan of "Star Trek" and all of its offspring. It gave us a cross-dressing dude who explains and performs a little "filk" for everyone. We were introduced to the lady in Arkansas who was made famous by attending Whitewater scandal jury duty in her Starfleet uniform and, alas, who could forget Gabriel Koerner. He was perhaps the uber-geek out of the whole bunch. The film also showed how the fans are very involved in their communities and world.

More of the same is offered up in "Trekkies 2," though this one was a little more emotional than the first. Denise Crosby bounces across the globe in search of more Trek fans. Once again we visit some pretty strange folks, but we are also shown how something as simple as "Star Trek" can have so much meaning to a group of people when Crosby goes to Serbia. Those people were so touched and amazed at how the characters in "Star Trek" lived amongst each other in relative peace even though they were pretty much all from different races, religions, etc. It was heartwarming to listen to these people talk about how their newfound freedom took on a special meaning through "Star Trek." I also noticed that out of all of people in this film, the Serbians seemed to be the least to play "dress up" as their favorite characters, holding more to the ideals of "Trek" and not so much the whiz-bangs and Klingons of it all.

There's one fellow who converts his house into a replica of the Enterprise. We get a better and perhaps more disturbing look into the world of "Filk" music and some of the bands in that genre. We also get a few nice clips featuring stars of the later "Trek" series and how many of their fans reacted to meeting them, funny letters, tattoos, etc.

The most fun part of this flick was when we get to look back on some of the more popular characters from the original film. We catch up with the guy who dresses his dog up in "Trek" costumes. We see Whitewater juror Barbara Adams interact with a group of people who question her about her motives for dressing up in a Starfleet uniform for court, and one individual gets pretty rough with her. Finally, we get to catch up with Gabriel Koerner, and learn that he is married, has steady work as a digital model builder for such shows as the new "Battlestar Galactica" and seems to have stepped back from, just a little, his love for "Trek."

In the end, if you enjoyed the original "Trekkies," you'll like this second helping. It might go overboard with a few of the fans, especially with the "Filk" singers, but we are shown that most Trekkies, Trekkers, etc. are primarily good folks with very big hearts(and many have graduate degrees).

Some folks collect baseball cards, some collect CDs, these folks just love their "Trek." Is that so wrong?

For years, STAR WARS fan have squared off against STAR TREK fans over which space fantasy is the better choice. As a result, both franchises have been embroiled in a continuing battle for merchandise sales, publicity and box-office receipts. Editorial Review:

In just under 90 minutes, this dynamic documentary manages to boldly go where a lot of Star Trek fans have gone before: into the heart of Star Trek fandom, where humanity blossoms into its most endearingly odd and bracingly positive manifestations. Are "Trekkies" (or "Trekkers") just a bunch of geeks, loners, and societal outcasts who've found their niche on the fandom convention circuit? This delightful film proves that the stereotypes are simultaneously valid and woefully myopic, because the people introduced here are only as strange as you make them. We could just as easily embrace them as ideal citizens of the United Federation of Planets, living Gene Roddenberry's fictional future on present-day Earth. Who's to say theirs is not a better world than ours?

Superbly directed by Roger Nygard and hosted by Denise Crosby (who played Tasha Yar on Star Trek: The Next Generation), the film offers splendid interview segments with all of the original Star Trek cast, and many from later Trek series, but the real story here lies with the devoted fans who are profiled with an equal balance of fascination, bemusement, and respect; they're a bit weird, to be sure, but these die-hard Trekkies are never unduly patronized. Instead, Crosby and Nygard respond as all Trek insiders have in the past: with astonished affection.

Filmed in 1996-97 at a variety of locations and conventions, Trekkies visits a vast array of Trekkers, Trekkies, and just plain folks who love the series and its pop-cultural progeny. Uplifting, thoughtful, comprehensive, and frequently hilarious, this good-natured film (sanctioned by Paramount without being subservient) is guaranteed to entertain fans and nonfans alike, and a proposed sequel would be wholeheartedly welcomed. --Jeff Shannon
