A Man Aint Suppose to Cry, but... 1 out of 5 stars.

Usually I don't write about things I don't like, but this matters to me so here it goes.

I have to own the fact that I am from a different generation at 62 years old now. There are good storytellers here and there throughout the 2 disk. There were times that I surely did laugh good and hard, but when all was said and done these DVD's ultimately depressed me no end. I would give the set away, but I don't think it would be good to even give them away to somebody I DIDN'T like! It might make them worse.

In too many cases it seemed to me that their "humor" reflected a celebration of the condition of their oppression, loss of history, pride in family, culture or possibility of livable future free from the hell we live in now.

My high school students often try to tell me that there is a difference between "nigger" and "nigga". Too often I don't see the difference. However in the different set of Def POETRY Jam when Felipe Luciano sings "Jibaro, my pretty niggah" I feel the pain, passion, commitment and ultimate victory in it. The past, present and future is in the present moment of his performance. In other words it unfolds upon multiple levels of meaning and reality. Good storytelling, an embodied performance!

We have a tradition of using laughter to move through the hard times, the tragedy times, but on Def COMEDY Jam I am not sure this is it. It isn't for me anyway. We have a history where we laughed in the face of it all, despite it all fashioning a vision of what could be, needs to be if we are going to be. I am suggesting that there is too much the stench of death in many of these performances.

I actually bought Def COMEDY Jam by mistake. I actually wanted Def POETRY Jam. I kept it anyway thinking, "What the hell! Give it a try. I LOVE to laugh!" Different than Def COMEDY Jam, Def POETRY Jam has hard core laughter AND hot burning tears ON PURPOSE. Def Poetry is multicultural, but it more clearly reflects the heart and vision of a Martin, a Malcolm, an Angela Davis or a Fannie Lou Hamer... people of courage and vision.

Laughter is a healing activity, a healing gift to give to friends, relations and strangers, but given that we do have freedom of speech even here, a lot more thought needs to be given into how we use that freedom, that essential right.

I am speaking from a lived history, subtleties of meaning, determination to come out of the shadows and Coltrane visions of dazzling Suns and Constellations.

There is much I admire about the current generation. They have an awesome resilience. I am waiting for their gifts to bear MORE of the fruits all of us desperately need now and tomorrow.

Tucker, Mac slaughtered it!!! Rock was lacklustre 4 out of 5 stars.

From the outset Martin Lawrence starts one of the funniest comedies to date. The wide range of comedians from the unknown Chris Tucker (not anymore) to the brilliances of Bernie Mac, Cedric make this a classic. I do not have one bad thing to say about this video other than Chris Rock provided a very wack show, like he did not want to be there at all.

A great buy!!!

You don't understand! I ain't scared of you! 4 out of 5 stars.

I initially bought this DVD because of Martin Lawrence. Ive seen alot of his films and thought they were funny. But i still thought him and will smith could not be the only black american comedians america has because in england all we have on terrestial TV(of black american comedy) are old re-runs of The Fresh Bel Air. So i purchased it wanting to discover more.In England we only have white comedy shows and although some of them are funny, I can not relate fully to them because of the cultural barrier between white english people and second generation african english culture.

In this DVD there are 3 shows:

One hosted by Martin Lawrence, the second by Chris Rock and the third Cedric the entertainer.

The first show is so funny all the comedians had me cracking up, and Bernie Mac had me in stitches.I would buy a DVD with just this show on it.

The second was OK but mostly due to the host Chris Rock. As the host he should get the audience fired up in anticpation. But he came and gave a below par performance. It was like he had not prepared for the show like he had just been drafted in at the last minute and did not want to be there. The comedians in this show were all different but i would have to say Dominique was the worst. Her set did not flow and had no relevance. I did not laugh once in fact i had to fast forward her a few times so that i did not cringe every time she talked.

Rudy Rush was quite good, he started good but did not follow through with the jokes. The other comedian was alright but his performance gained momentum as time went on. I basically only laughed at the end.

Now the show with Cedric the entertainer was sooooooo funny. I mean Cedric is such a joker. He upheld the whole show. The comedians in the show were good but Cedric was in a league of his own he had me laughing so many times, and he didn't mention sex once as many comedians in this series love to do.

Funny But Too Short for a Boxed Set 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

This boxed set could have all been on one DVD and save me some storage space and money. The entire 3 DVD set is 2:30. Volume 1 contains 2 shows from the original Def Jam in 1992 and 1993 hosted by Martin Lawrence. There were some hilarious moments and some funny moments. It brought back great memories of the early 90s. Volume 2, hosted by Steve Harvey was okay and also only contained 2 shows. Both Vol. 1 and 2 are available separately so Vol. 3 is a bonus and therefore only contains 1 show. I was expecting 5 or 6 hours of material since it was broken into 3 DVDs. What was I thinking?

shipping nightmare 3 out of 5 stars.

Amazon dropped the ball on this one as well. this item was also in the package of items i never recieved. i was reimbursed for a portion of my purchase although there were 3 items in the box. i was never told why it was "undeliverable" which leads me to believe amazon never had access to it to begin with. i was finally able to reorder my dvd's but i was already disappointed with the purchase and the way it was handled.

Editorial Review:

This second volume of raw and gritty More All Stars episodes from the early 1990s finds comedians Martin Lawrence and Joe Torry still on active duty as frequent hosts. (Between introducing up-and-coming, African American comics, Lawrence gets in some good licks about the psychological contrast between deranged white men and defeatist black men getting fired from their jobs.) The overall quality of the shows is a bit lower than Volume 1, but Steve Harvey hits a double with satiric observations about why blacks never hitch rides, Tony Brown strikes a nerve with a joke about ice-skating as a white pursuit, and Gerald Kelly delivers a clever penis plaint from his member's point-of-view. ("You tryin' to suffocate me with that thing?"). Speaking of which, the John and Lorena Bobbitt drama--fresh news at the time--figures prominently in the gags, though to uneven effect. --Tom Keogh

Editorial Review:

The three lively, 1990s episodes of Def Comedy Jam on More All Stars, Vol. 1 find Martin Lawrence hosting two of the programs, though his duties include a funny bit about trying to put on a condom in the fog of early-morning sleepiness. ("Just go to work. I'll call you when I'm done.") The parade of brief appearances by working comics include Angela Means, who complains about the worried boyfriend who left her during the L.A. riots because her complexion was dangerously light. Cedric the Entertainer, in his impressionist mode, imagines Luther Vandross's soulful schoolboy days, while Alturo Shelton enlists several colleagues (and the one white guy in the audience) to recreate glory years of the Temptations. Lots to enjoy, but a real highlight is Tommy Chun's bewilderment over Ice Cube's taste in flannel shirts. ("How do you survive in South Central? Get a tank top!").--Tom Keogh

Editorial Review:

For nine seasons throughout the 1990s Russell Simmons' DEF COMEDY JAM exposed hilarious, predominantly African-American comedians to the public via HBO, and created many new superstars in the process. Unfettered by censors, the show allowed up-and-coming stars such as Martin Lawrence, Chris Tucker, Chris Rock, Bernie Mac, and more to be be as raw and wild as they wanted to be. This all-star episode includes performances by Martin Lawrence, Queen Latifah, Adele Givens, and more!
