Fascinating, but not the greatest source of information 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The History Channel has once again made a pretty good documentary and view of our 43 presidential administrations. It kept me glued to the t.v. the entire time and really gave lots of information about the president's personal lives that a lot of people wouldn't originally know. However, I was sort of expecting it to focus more along the lines of a detailed background of their policies and accomplishments of their administrations, not their personal life.
The History Channel's "The Presidents" is a very interesting film, but if you are planning on using this in a classroom, I wouldn't bother because it doesn't focus on the most important information and the high points of their lives. If you are just interested in other aspects of our president's lives, the I would definitely recommend this for you to watch. It will be worth your time.

Stink Bomb 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This series is what I like to refer to as a 'Dime Bag' documentary. In true History Chanel format, this series foregos intellectual content beyond adolescent levels, opting instead to work in as much sensationalism as possible. For example, a chapter entitled "The Most Violent Places in the Universe", threatens repeatedly that Black Holes are "Out There.. Prowling the darkness". The series is packed with this kind of crap, and it seems the History Chanel would have you believe that something out there in the dark, scary, violent, universe holds some aganizing death with your name on it; Be it torn to shreds from 'Prowling' black holes, Crushed by a meteor, or violently engulfed by the sun, etc. Seemingly, many topics touch on the violent nature of your demise should you venture too close, be in the wrong place at the wrong time, or be wearing a lose neck-tie.. whatever. If you want to sink your teeth into something with some meat on it, I recommend "Steven Hawkings Universe", where the only sensationalism is in the amazing facts and details presented on topics such as the infinite density of primortial matter comprising the 'singularity' from which the universe and all elements of matter were created. The great deal of thought provoking subject matter had me walking around in a daze for days. As for the History Chanels Universe..Everything in it, you should have learned in elementary school. Buy it for your kids maybe.

A Primer On America 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

It has often been said that you don't know who you are until you know where you have been. The story of the American Revolution comes to life through brilliantly portrayed scenes and narratives. A video is but a thumbnail sketch of all that happened, but it is certainly a primer in terms of preparing the reader for what comes next. I think to truly appreciate that American Revolution, you must see it and read about it from many different sources, both revolutionists and loyalists to get a real feel and understanding of what actually took place and why. View it and enjoy this DVD series, then begin the great adventure of reading about the American Revolution. All the materials available is like a great buffet and each selection tastes great.

I used to watch these every year on the History Channel. Its to bad they dont run them during Halloween anymore, or at least make new ones. Some new insight on Salem would be nice.

Fantastic 5 out of 5 stars.

ok, i am into paranormal however, this series just doesn't cut it! too short when covering subject matter and didn't tell me anything that i didn't know already. in fact, i fell asleep watching one of the DVDs!

Haunted History a good deal 5 out of 5 stars.

Haunted History was purchased primarily for the Halloween segment which I had my substitute teacher show to my World History class on Oct 31st while I was away on a trip. I previewed the video before showing it and felt it gave a nice treatment of the subject. The other videos I consider a bonus and made this a good buy. All are good as would be expected from History Channel.

One Of The Best Science Videos I've Ever Seen 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I am a MAJOR science video far (just ask my long-suffering spouse), and How the Earth Was Made is one of the best I'e ever seen. I am getting it from Amazon in a couple of weeks and I look forward to enjoying it on DVD.

How the Earth Was Made presents a geological history of earth in an easy-to-understand, accessible form. The computer graphics are beautiful. I also enjoyed the narration and soundtrack to this video. I especially enjoy learning new things and this video taught me about the origin of banded iron formations, the scource of most if not all of the iron currently being mined. I also learned about the formation of oxygen on the Earth and the formtion of the oceans. Not only did I learn but was entertained as well.

I highly recommend this film to everyone.

basically about corrosion 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I had high hopes for this video but in the end it was essentially all about how the lack of maintenance will affect the corrosion and decay of various types of structures - concrete, steel, etc. etc. I guess the feel was less apocalyptic than I had hoped. In defense I suppose this would have come off as too political if the film dealt more directly with long term environmental impacts from a scientific peerspective. They did visit a town abandoned in the aftermath of Chernobyl and talked about the dogs and cats (avoided discussion of what domestication does to plants and animals), but the film would have had more impact if it dealt with these issues.

Not as good as it could have been 4 out of 5 stars.

The computer simulations of NYC etc in 100 years after people are interesting, even if the buildings falling remind you of the WTC on 9/11. The speculation is about what it would like if people disappeared, a very pleasant thought, indeed. Evidently, house cats would take over, the film posits.

Join THE HISTORY CHANNELĀ® on an unforgettable voyage through one of the most desolate periods in human history as the rulers conflicts and cataclysmic societal breakdown of THE DARK AGES are brought to light. At its height in the second century A.D. the Roman Empire was the beacon of learning trade power and prosperity in the western world. But the once-powerful Rome--rotten to the core by the fifth century--lay open to barbarian warriors who came in wave after wave of invasion slaughtering stealing and ultimately settling. As chaos replaced culture Europe was beset by famine plague persecutions and a state of war that was so persistent it was only rarely interrupted by peace. THE DARK AGES profiles those who battled to shape the future from the warlords whose armies threatened to case the demise of European society like Alaric Charles the Hammer and Clovis; to the men and women who valiantly tended the flames of justice knowledge and innovation including Charlemagne St. Benedict Empress Theodora and other brave souls who fought for peace and enlightenment. 1 Defect but a great product! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Dogfights, Season 2 is a great series!
The only problem I had is on disc 5. In the first episode on the disc (Supersonic); the historian, Barrett Tillman, is speaking near the end of the episode when it abruptly ends with him in mid-sentence!
I thought perhaps it was a defect in the one series that I had received so I sent for another set and it had the same flaw. I'm assuming every set has the same defect.
It is obviously an oversight in the original editing by The History Channel.

Best of the Series... 5 out of 5 stars.

This is by far the best episodes of the entire series. Updated graphics, more interesting stories, and as always, War Vet. interviews. I am upset that they cancelled the series for shows like ice road truckers, but what can you do... By this season, support actual history.

How close can you get to the action?!! 4 out of 5 stars.

Love the cgi mid air camera shots, just like being there with a jet pack strapped on your back and a video cam in your hand. Every detail is considered, down to the jet exhaust heat wave and vibration of the camera as jets go past at mach1. Just imagine being there, freezing your testicles off trying to get the camera angle. Thats what it looks like from the cgi footage. Simply brilliant.

Dreadful 1 out of 5 stars.
34 of 38 people found this review helpful.

I was pleased to see a new "supersized" history of WWII box set come to DVD, and being a superfan of this subject bought it. I wasn't expecting a lot of new footage but I thought perhaps a new perspective would be refreshing.

I'm afraid disappointed is an understatement in describing how I felt while watching it... "War Chronicles" (Mort Zimmerman) was never my favorite of the WWII documentaries, and this box set is built entirely on these old reels.

Patrick O'Neal's voice drones on like the engines of a tired old bomber on a long run to the heart of Germany. You hear little else but his narration over the canned sound effects through the entire series.

I was particularly amazed at the lack of footage devoted to England and the Battle of Britain. Literally a couple of minutes!

A far better choice would be the "BBC History of World War II", The "Definitive History of WWII" (Brentwood), "Visions of War" (Southern Star/IMAVision), or "The World at War" box sets.

If you still wish to have this box set, there will be plenty of very slightly used copies available very cheap, very soon!
