Best renition so far... 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Although a bit long (keeps the suspense going) and took a few liberties (fortune teller), this is probably the best brooding Rochester ever and Jane the most unassuming as well. Kudos to both actors and the rendition that showed true love in the end prevailed no matter what. Ok, that may sound sappy, but the cinematography and sets/costumes were spot on. Looking at it from a technical stance, I can't imagine there being anything to criticize. The Cieran Kinds version was good, but he was too barky to Jane. And he never smiled, although he cried very well. Thanks MP for another splendid version.

A must-see for the Jane Eyre enthusiast 5 out of 5 stars.

Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson are my favorite Rochester/Jane pairing ever. The chemistry between she and Rochester was amazing. While some liberties were taken with the story and dialogue, I can't say enough good about this version.

Some reviews complain that Toby Stephens wasn't an "ugly" enough Rochester, but I think he was absolutely perfect for the part. Stephens brought a level of sex appeal to Rochester that Timothy Dalton couldn't equal.

Ruth Wilson is my favorite Jane casting so far - she brought warmth, quiet intelligence, and humor to the role.

The ending was too Hollywood and sappy, but otherwise, this version is well worth your time.

Northanger Abbey: Masterpiece Theatre's Little Masterpiece 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This film adaptation of Northanger Abbey has been a long time coming for any true Janeite. It was absolutely dripping with the very charm and wit of Miss Austen herself, and maintained the integrity of the text. A dash of British humour, a gleam of gothic fright, and a full cup of the endearing romance from the Regency Era.

Cheers!

Excellent Entertainment 5 out of 5 stars.

I thought the story was interesting from beginning to end. The actors were convincing and showed great depth of character. I didn't want it to end and I wish there was a sequel.
It was well worth the price I paid. I was not familiar with this particular story and I was so pleased with the ending.

Editorial Review:

In Austen s gentle parody of gothic fiction Felicity Jones (Meadowlands) plays romance addict Catherine Morland. Invited to a medieval country house that appeals to her most lurid fantasies she forms a close friendship with the younger son on the estate Henry Tilney (JJ Feild The Secret Life of Mrs. Beeton) but their budding romance is mysteriously cut short. It's already nostalgia 4 out of 5 stars.

Somehow not as convincing as Midsommer Murders, but endearing in its own way. Perhaps, because it is not fully convincing as "something British". It does have a charm of its own, however.

It seems that this will be the final series, and more's the pity, since it does set a high standard and, with all its faults, should be preferred over so many products.

Inspector Lynley is still GREAT! 5 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoy the Inspector Lynley stories. I hope this is NOT the last!
Who do we tell to ask for more?!

Disappointing finish 4 out of 5 stars.

Seems hard to believe after the long ongoing story between the two that the last story would end without a finish. It really leaves you empty.

Last Call 5 out of 5 stars.

Just as with the previous parts of this series, an excellent show, too bad it's the last of the series

Inspector Lynley, Series 6 5 out of 5 stars.

Inspector Lynley is the next standardbearer for the Inspector Morse series (starring the late John Thaw). I'm not sure how many more there will be, but any and all are good.

Bad Adaptation, badly cast 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

After seeing Pride and Predjudice with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle and Jayne Eyre with Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson where every cast member in both of these fantastic adaptations was just perfect I could not watch this movie Mansfield Park at all but I made myself watch it and I don't know why I did. There was no substance to this story adn it did not feel like anything related to Jane Austin. It was some airy fairy version of something. Billy Piper was so wrong for this period character with her blonde layered 70's hairdo and thick dark brown eyebrows and she did not have the mannerisms of a lady of this time like Jennifer Ehle had in Pride and Predjudice. Billy Piper was so miscast and was the worst miscast and the rest of the actors too in my opinion. It was just plain boring to me. Miss Crowleys hair too was like something I wore at my first holy communion when I was 7 I think back in the 60's. It was nothing like the hairstyle from that era with her wispy pieces from her ears and the fancy pulled back bun which was way too modern. I found the female actors just did not have the mannersims of this time period and did not act them well at all as ladys of regency of 19th century england. Blake Ritson was the best cast in this. He just "had it" and was convincing of this period. Before I knew it, the movie was over and I thought what was this all about where is the story here. Too Short of a movie.......................If Toby stephens, Colin Firth, Ruth Wilson and Jennifer Ehle had been cast this would have been superb as long as they had the correct team players as well. The cover of the DVD was strange as I found Billy Pipers hair and dress somewhat of a different time too again she looked like someone I would see today with bleach blonde hair layered with a 2008 top. Sorry Billy I am sure you are a good actress but do not do these period pieces again girl!!!!
This was Just awful.................................I was very disapointed indeed.

Masterpiece Theater film is a Masterpiece 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I just viewed this on PBS. It was excellent. It asks all of the most difficult questions that we all have about this most dark time of our history has human beings - especially those trying to understand G-d in such a time. And it doesn't end with neat answers and happily ever afters. It isn't afraid to ask things about G-d that are usually considered unspeakable. Neither is G-d diminished by the questions. For those that can handle it, it is a most worthwhile endeavor to be challenged by these questions, and to seek to come up with our own answers. The charge: Did G-d keep His covenant or did He break the contract He made. Excellent use of television.

public television at its finest 5 out of 5 stars.

Is an attrocity such as the holocaust compatible with a belief in a benevolent god? This question is argued passionately on both sides by the Jewish inmates of a concentration camp as they await their probable deaths at the hands of the nazis. Most of the talking points of the current atheist - theist dialectic are discussed in a wide-ranging, intelligent, and provocative debate. With fine performances, taught direction, and an incisive script, this is a first rate drama that builds to an emotionally charged conclusion.

Engrossing 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

if you are the least bit curious on how the mind works and the infinite mysteries that it holds then this DVD is for you. Some of the fascinating things that scientists, psychologists and physcians have discovered about the inner workings of the brain is unfortunately the result of brain injured patients. These people are the subjects of this DVD. It concerns their weird symptomalogies after surviving a truamatic, mechanical head injury, all of them real interesting subject matters but ofcourse the star of the show is the charismatic and engaging, Dr Ramachandran. He's obviously very smart and the top of his field, Nueroscience but he also has the enthusiasm of a keen five year old boy. His best asset is his charm and the rare ability to transform his own fascination about the brain into an interesting and compelling subject for the average, lay viewer. The camera loves him and he knows how to engage the camera. He would make a personable science TV host. The subject matter is interesting in itself for people in the medical field but Ramachandran makes it interesting for everyone. Highly recommended, it can be purchased by itself or as a set of three DVD's. But I thought it fair to review each DVD individually.

Too bad it was spoiled 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Like many who looked forward to this series I'm a big fan of Inspector Morse. I thought the pilot was very good and when we finally got a follow-up I made sure that I set my recorder to capture it. To my great dismay I found the first two episodes impossible to watch because of the incessant, inane music, mixed way too loud, that accompanied virtually every scene. It got so annoying that we couldn't get through an entire episode. I'm not sure if this is surprising or not. The music in many of the British mystery series has been on a downward slope - from the absolute high of the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Homes series (composer: Patrick Gowers) - for some time. The Morse series was quite good as was Poirot. Not so for Inspector Lewis. It sounds like a kid playing with his synthesizer. Fairly realistic sounds, but musically nil and not enhancing of the story line at all. A shame.

Inspector Lewis, the Pilot & Series 1 5 out of 5 stars.

I suppose that Inspector Lewis will always be linked to Morse, not a bad thing as that series was brilliant, as were the actors! John Thaw and Kevin Whately made a series believable and never made an character mistake! It was not seen to be acting, they had become the people you knew and trusted.
Now Kevin Whately (DI Lewis)picking up his life after such personal tragedy, and Laurence Fox (DS Hathaway)giving his own stamp on this charming and very likable, though sensitive character, are just right to carry Thames Valley Police and Oxford into this series for a long and gripping run.
An older Lewis is a humble, dedicated man with intense sympathy for the victim. Hathaway has respect for Lewis; though you cannot (see) all of this young man's character at once, you realize that he will support Lewis no matter what!
I am now looking forward to the next releases of "Inspector Lewis" and I will continue to collect this series

Editorial Review:

The history and impact of the new global economy are made clear--and compelling--in Commanding Heights: The Battle for the World Economy. This three-part, six-hour documentary does an astonishingly thorough job of dissecting and explaining macroeconomics and their current political and social importance without ever causing a loss of consciousness for the viewer. Part 1, The Battle of Ideas, chronicles the history of economic thought from the start of the 20th century and its socialist reforms right through the deregulation of the 1980s. Part 2, The Agony of Reform, explores the upheavals that such deregulation caused, focusing primarily on economic growth and gains and touching briefly on the wrenching consequences for the poor. Part 3, The New Rules of the Game, explores the consequences of globalization, including terrorism and the contagion of market collapse. The series makes good use of both large- and small-scale examples, and features interviews with several major world leaders. There is a slight teenybopper feel to The Battle for the World's Economy's admiration for today's celebrity economists, but the contagious enthusiasm is part of what makes the series so interesting. Big ideas are made extremely accessible to the average viewer (without condescension). Well worth watching. --Ali Davis
