Band of Brothers 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Great series. My husband has wanted this for quite sometime. He was greatly suprised when he opened the box. My uncle fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was taken prisoner by the Germans. This series protrays the battle "spot on" to what he told us about it.
Thank you HBO for putting it out on CD's.

Essential Introduction to the Greatest Generation To the Next Generation 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Band of Brothers takes us from Boot camp through the great battles of the European Theater of operations to the final Victory against Hitler's Third Reich. Along the way, we see these Band of Brothers (from Shakespeare's famous speech in Henry V - "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers...") as land at Normandy, weather the onslaught of Bastogne, cross into Germany, liberate a concentration camp and finish their tour of duty in Victory.

Each man is carefully studied archetype in American society from the tough mouthed city boys to more buoyant Midwestern toughs. The new officers must suffer the looks and doubts of the experienced dogfaces while the veteran officers must fulfill their missions - all the while dreading the loss of men that they have come to know and respect. We feel their hopes and dreams. We hope that they live to fulfill these dreams.

In perilous times such as the present fight against terrorism this DVD set is a fitting introduction and education that the threat of National Socialism and Radical Islam requires our attention, devotion and sacrifice now and for the Next Generation.

Watch the show with your family, including the children old enough to understand. Take the time to explain the history and threat. To give context to the duty of the soldiers to our Country. The reason for the genocide against the Jews. The need for future vigilance.

The low point of the series? 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I've been a longtime follower of Smallville, and every year there's always fans (myself included) who finger the current year as "Jumping the shark". If you browse my profile you'll find my reviews of the older seasons start enthusiastic and become more critical as the years pass. While I won't comment on the currently airing season 8, the trend seems to hold true when you compare season 7 to the six that came before it - they're pure genius compared to this mess.

There's way too much going on this year. Smallville always has great comic book-esque storylines, but lacks development and internal logic within its own world. The writers jump from plot to plot with no pacing, so you get seemingly dramatic life-changing events that are completely forgotten by the next episode. There's a shocking twist involving the new Daily Planet Editor that's cut short right when it gets interesting; the return of Clark's biological mom Lara barely lasts an episode; Bizzaro appears and is promptly defeated - twice; Clark travels through time and space to save his infant self on Krypton in all of five minutes. Sam Jones finally returns as Pete Ross and is wasted in horrible product placement. Supergirl is introduced and barely developed before she's saddled with the amnesia cliche and disappears for most of the season. Why not settle on 2 or 3 storylines and develop them properly? And don't blame the writer's strike, which cuts this season by 2 episodes - the problems were obvious before the strike happened.

Speaking of outside influences, quite a few characters leave the show this year. Kristen Kreuk's sudden departure to film Street Fighter leaves her already weak character a rather anemic farewell - luckily she'll be back briefly in season 8 to tie up loose ends. Another character that I won't spoil dies a noble death, and will be missed. It's Rosenbaum's departure that's the real kicker, though. Not only is Smallville's best actor not coming back, but he's left with an ambiguous and unsatisfying ending. Hardly a great capper to 7 years of amazing work.

There are some things Smallville does right this year - the return of Brainiac and the 'Veritas' storyline bring a sense of continuity that the show has been sorely lacking. But overall, there's a lack of coherency that seasons 5 and 6 tried to have, and the show has no heart now that the Kent parents are gone. Whether or not you need this season depends on if you bought the first six and absolutely want the complete collection.

An Ideal State of Flawed Perfection 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

Battlestar Galactica has, over the last four years, proven to be a new milestone for the very idea of sci-fi television and, outside of "genre" standards, has still shown itself to be one of the strongest shows on television through consistently powerful acting, writing, and directing. Over the seasons, the show has always pushed the envelope when it came to reaching beyond the limitations placed on it by the network and the high level of quality it continued to place on itself. The third season faltered slightly due to all of this growing pressure, as the network forced the show to turn to a story format that didn't suit the overarching plot at all, conflicting with the show's natural evolution. Fortunately, the network took the blame, and for the first time since the show's conception, the writers had full creative control. And how they embraced it.

In turn, the show's fourth season is the perfect realization of Battlestar's miraculously coherent half-planned, half-winging-it plotting style. The ten episodes shown so far are the first large group of episodes since the beginning of the show's second season that can be seen working as a whole, each episode contributing to the core plot, slowly implementing important movements for the main players. The difference here though is that back in the second season, the writers still had to pair each major development with a weekly plot, making easily discernible story chunks. But now, finally at the end, the show has moved far past that phase, ambitiously linking episode to episode by bringing what were previously undercurrents to the foreground, creating the sense of a visual novel with no distractions or fluff. Each moment is even more necessary than ever, as the show has truly become aware of the power of its main narrative, shedding off the structure that other shows have settled on after great ambition. Battlestar dared to go past what was proven to work and has reached its ideal state.

As one might realize, if a show were condensed to its most relevant materials and its excess removed, the viewer is left with very concentrated bursts of development. Luckily, Battlestar's entire cast and crew seem to have been trained for this season through the show's progression, and each episode not only works to hold together the whole, but is a gem of television in its own right. An episode such as "Escape Velocity" shines for handling character growth perfectly through masterful writing and direction, while "Faith" will shine for immaculate performances and gorgeous, revelatory writing most of all. Even an episode like "Sine Qua Non," the only noticeable hiccup this season, still shines for the episode it is, its incongruity tempered by its importance to the full season.

Any viewer of the show can acknowledge the odd notion that, for such a beacon of hope, Battlestar is a dark, challenging, and at times outright depressing show. Season 4 continues dark and heavy, but with a new and refined perception towards the sense of each character, has shown palpable thematic brilliance, each emotional trench, realistically heart-breaking, each rare moment of hope, poignantly uplifting. Just as the characters of the show are flawed and are perfect for all of their faults, so is this fantastic season, in this once-in-a-lifetime show, worth watching unfold.

Still some good episodes but definitely some clunkers. I would only buy if you're a hard core fan (which I am).

Krusty's Head is filled with wonder! 5 out of 5 stars.

Simpsons Season 11 is a gem! There are some great episodes in there. My only complaint is how difficult it is to remove the discs from the packaging and the overall flimsiness of the packaging. I foresee it all falling apart after a handful of viewings.

The Packaging Wasn't THAT Bad! 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

While this season marked a certain downward trend in the comedy styling of the cartoon series I so love to this day, there were still some gems this go round.

The 'Behind the Laughter' episode, which was a take on the popular VH-1 'Behind the Music' for starters is probably the most hysterical of all the episodes on here. 'Eight Misbehavin'' when Apu and his wife give birth to the octuplets is a close second. 'Last Tap Dance in Springfield' and 'Guess Who's Coming to Criticize Dinner' are also up there.

Then there were the sillier ones that I turned my nose up at like the episode where Bart takes the meds for having ADHD (Brother's Little Helper) and the Spring Break episode where Homer has a nervous break down and they take him to Spring Break (Kill the Alligator and Run).

Now the packaging: I must admit, I was like what in the world when I received this, but it's really not that bad like some have made it out to be. None of my discs were scratched or skipped. They were packed in extremely tight and you did have to fiddle with the cardboard a bit.

I would say the other packagings were better, and this was kinda cheap, especially with the fact that the collectible head was not the case, but glued onto the regular version.

Where would I start with this show? There hasn't been too many shows I've waited for to come on week by week in my life, but this is definitely one of them. Charlie, Mac, Dennis, Dea, and Frank are the funniest combination of people on TV since Seinfeld; and this show is pretty much "Seinfeld on crack". If you like shocking, bizarre humor, please buy this DvD or at least tune in Thursday nights at 10:00pm to FX and watch an episode! Also, you can watch any episode through the website.

Cleverly Hysterical 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of the funnies shows to come along in a decade. It's clever humor has me laughing again. In a TV world that is full of "reality" everything and the occasional "safe" formulaic sitcom this show is a stand out. It is fresh and different and the chemistry between the actors is great.

Science + awkward = Big Bang! 5 out of 5 stars.

I love science. I also love nerds. This show is awkward and and truly funny. I am a big fan of Sheldon. The dude has no clue!

Very funny, smart and original comedy 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A friend recommended this show to me that I had never heard of, and showed me the first episode. I was immediately hooked. The show is smart and hilarious - I can honestly say it made me laugh until I cried. The humor is intelligent (the physics jokes and references throughout the show are all completely accurate, too - they had a physicist on the board for the show.) The cast is unbelievable - Jim Parsons (Sheldon) and Johnny Galecki (Leonard) in particular. Poor Leonard is adorable in the way he is smitten with Penny and Sheldon just plain steals the show. Kaley Cuoco (Penny), Kunal Nayyar (Raj), Simon Helberg (Howard) and Sara Gilbert (Leslie) make up the rest of the cast, and are just as fantastic. There is not enough good I can possible say about the writing - just spectacular. Not many extras on the DVD - some deleted scenes, and a couple featurettes. Rating: 6 stars our of 5.

Movie teaches the wrong things. 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I was watching the movie with my nieces and nephews.

It seem sort of innocent, just some saccharin entertainment.

But the end really shocked me.

The smart kids used their skills to sabotage the game clock which allowed the "Wildcats" to win.

I ask the kids, 7-11, what they thought about the cheating.

Their response surprised me.

Essentially they said "Whatever Troy and Gabriella did was ok because they are nice."

Sort dangerous, I would say.

An Uncertain Future for the Disney Channel???? Maybe.... 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Before you start to shoot insults and criticisms at me, hear me out. I'm not writing a review on how tacky or unoriginal HSM is, but writing on something that's going through the minds of the a generation that grew up on the Disney classics and television series we cherished throughout our lifetime. Many of us worry that the Disney Channel is heading for serious trouble since it has now become focused on the tweens and teens of today instead of the entire family, and I am one of them. A tad bit bias toward HSM? You could probably say that. But once again, hear me out.

HSM is basically a younger rendition of the Tony Award-winning show Grease, except pointed towards a younger audience. The star athlete Troy (Zac Efron) meets a smart science girl named Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens) at a party, and they probably don't expect to see each other again. However, all of that changes when they both end up in leading roles for the high school musical production, which causes confusion for the vast majority of the cliques (i.e. Geeks, drama clubs, science club, athletes, you get the idea.).

To start things off, the only song I really enjoyed from this film is "Getcha Head in the Game," and I found it really upbeat and good to dance to. The casting, plot, and dancing was okay, but not great. One thing that many people may argue is whether or not this can actually happen in real life high schools. The answer to that is: yes and no. Yes because unfortunately there are cliques in school which exclude many students from really ever "standing out" or even merging togething in another group without being made fun of from the main group. However, it can also true that this film was somewhat exaggerated; the dialogue doesn't seem to be realisitc to an audience as it would be in real life, and the music isn't really helping to reinforce that belief as much as many of us would.

Second, what really surprised was how big of a hit HSM became after premiering on a Friday night; it somehow created the biggest sensation known to teens and tweens everywhere. Also, I was kind of irritated at the attention it got. It's just another film that people should enjoy watching, not the greatest thing in the world. It shouldn't be worshipped as an idol like it is today, alongside Hannah Montana and That's So Raven. Being that I'm an adult, I grew out of things like this and preferred things that have more charm, sentinementality, and even a little bit of originality, such as Singin' in the Rain, The Lion King, or Wicked. You could say that's the reason why I didn't try out for the musical for my high school production (Also because I couldn't dance very well, but that's neither here nor there.).

Now, you're probably wondering about the title of my review. This is the bulk of it. I was born in 1988, and I grew up watching all the classic Disney films (i.e. Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, the Little Mermaid, etc.) as well seeing all the cartoon shows I adored (i.e. Gummi Bears, Talespin, Darkwing Duck, Ducktales, etc.). One of the things going through my mind as I see more shows such as Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place, and That's So Raven being put on the air is the future of the network itself. When I was growing up, the Disney Channel featured something for everyone: the morning geared toward preschoolers, the afternoon geared toward tweens and teens, the evening featuring a family film (usually an animated classic, a comedy, a drama, something along those lines), and the late night dedicated for the young at heart. Today, it seems, soley geared toward tweens and teenagers, with little or no time for the entire family. Futhermore, there was a time when pop, hip-hop, or rap didn't rule the music airwaves on televsion, as well as sex, drugs, or dancing that lacks originality ruling television as it does now.

What concerns me as well as people who grew up in my generation and even parents is whether or not the Disney Channel is going downhill because of being soley focused on a particular group of people instead of the entire family as a whole. Unfortunately, the answer to that is yes. Walt Disney's empire wasn't founded on HSM, Hannah Montana, or anything like that; it was founded on the power of imangination, originality, creativity, and believing in the impossible. It's not all about HSM, Hannah Montana, or even Wizards of Waverly Place; it's about bringing the entire family together to enjoy each other while watching a movie or seeing a show. And even the network allowing these actors to continue doing these things after some of the scandals which went on (i.e. Miley Cyrus' photo shoot w/Vanity Fair) is sending the wrong message to viewers, which also worries me.

Hopefully there will come a day when the Disney Channel goes back to what it originally started out as: a network focused on THE ENTIRE FAMILY, not just one group of people to make money. Some of the cartoons shown today don't even come close to the original shows shown in earlier periods, and some of the original television movies made for the audience today may be a way to make quick bucks for themselves without actually going out into the world and finding something original to make movies from. Futhermore, I hope they begin showing more of the animated and/or live action classics we've grown to love over the years again instead of night after night after night a Disney Channel original movie. It's starting to get old real fast, don't you think?

In conclusion, HSM isn't great, but it isn't horrendous either. It's somewhere in the middle, and I hope people respect my opinion. I applaud the actors and Kenny Ortega for their effort, but it just couldn't grab my attention fully, and judging from the review, you can probably tell why. Do I have a lot of time on my hands? Yes, because I prefer older musicals and animated and/or live action classics to this, and no because I constantly have to deal with this rant day after day, and want to finally have the chance to let it out to people who are willing to read this. Do I have a life? Yes, as a matter of fact, I do. I'm a theatre major and a music minor who loves the musical theatre now more than I've ever had the chance, and I simply don't have time to see things like HSM as well as don't wish to see it. Futhermore, it seems to me HSM lacked something that a lot of films and musicals released didn't have: HEART. Did I give this film a chance? Yes, I tried, but it just couldn't work for me because, like I said in the beginning, I'm an adult with a wider variety of musical choices other than this one. Much of the choreography shown here looks more like music videos rather than an actual musical production, and Ortega did so much better choreography in Newsies; even you can't deny that!

To the die-heart fans, I hope I didn't take up to much of your time, and it's your choice on whether or not you agree with me, and even whether or not you wish to read this. To the parents, please take the time to read this and take at least a little bit of what I said into consideration. To everyone who grew up in my generation, please read this. If you think you're the only one who wishes for the good old days of television and cinema to return, you're not alone. I, too, wish for the exact same thing. I hope anyone who reads this gains something from what I said and my feelings about the Disney Channel, the films, and what is being presented to today's audience. This empire has never really died to begin with; rather, it goes through periods of darkness followed by rebirth, so maybe we are hopefully in the midst of rebirth from the film and television industries. Have faith.

P.S. Just for the record, I'm looking forward to Camp Rock; I enjoy listening to the Jonas Bros, and the story line looks interesting.

This produce is a quality copy of the classic Laverne & Shirley show from the 70's. It was one of my mom's favorite shows as a kid, so this was her mother's day present. She loved it and, much to the surprise of my kid brother and teenage sister, everybody now watches it often. This DVD set is hysterical to anybody no matter your age.

There are a lot of intimate memories for me and my wife during these times if you know what I mean! Now both my girls are off to college. It's like starting over where we left off 20 years ago ! Some times it is good to go back and visualize the past.

Almost! 4 out of 5 stars.

The movie is fun, especially for long-time fans. There are many layers - it was nice to watch it at home and let it all sink in. I bought the Blu-Ray version of the film - while there's no denying that it looks great, the extras weren't as exciting as touted in the description. There's barely any additional footage - deleted scenes or otherwise and there's still no explanation of Stanford's paltry storyline. Also, no "cutting room floor" extras of the rumored Aiden storyline. I was expecting a lot more, but still enjoyed the actual film. You aren't missing anything by purchasing the DVD version, as far as I can tell. And you'll save a few bucks!

Love this movie! 5 out of 5 stars.
