A mix of insanely great and very solid episodes 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The controversial eighth season of the X Files is remarkable in many ways. First of all, it's the only season in the series that doesn't have any real clunkers. But it also has a lot of merely solid episodes, ones that harken back to the earlier, more straight-forward sci-fi/horror stories. But on the other hand, it has some of the all time greatest episodes in the entire history of the program.

What distinguishes season 8 from other X Files seasons, besides the presence of new male lead Robert Patrick, is that was the first season since the fifth in which Chris Carter's attention was focused on the X Files itself. Season 4 and 6 he was working on Millenium, 7 he was working on the short-lived Harsh Realm (he didn't spend much time on the Lone Gunmen, which was more of a Frank Spotnitz/Vince Gilligan show). I always resented these other shows and saw them as unnecessary diversions on Carter's part, even though I've come to appreciate Millennium. There were a lot of great writers and directors that worked on the X Files- Glen Morgan and James Wong, Darin Morgan, Vince Gilligan, Frank Spotnitz- and many of them had better batting averages in regards to consistency. But none of them had the sheer madness, rage and intensity that Chris Carter made his calling card. Chris Carter's stories are distinguished by moments of extreme violence, bizarre, almost dream-like imagery, sharp twists in dialogue, and stomach-punching emotionalism. Seasoned X Files viewers can tell the difference between a Carter script and a Carter/Spotnitz script, and season 8 gives you 5 Carter solo pieces, more than any since the first season.

Season Eight also has the most developed and immediately accessible Mytharc episodes of the series as well. The storyline featuring Mulder's abduction, death and ressurrection as well as Scully's pregnancy is very focused, concise and emotionally powerful. Robert Patrick was an inspired choice for the new male lead (he was never meant to actually "replace" David Duchovny) and gives the peerless Gillian Anderson a run for her money, acting chops wise.

Hence the episodes Within/Without, Per Manum, This Is Not Happening, DeadAlive, Three Words, Essence and Existence rank up there with the very best of the X Files, and given the incredible scope and high production values they display, may very well be the best multi-episode arc in the show's long history. All these episodes are exciting and carthartic, are worth the price of the box set alone. These episodes form the equivalent of 4 feature length motion pictures and stand up beside anything Hollywood has to offer insofar as production quality and beat most recent features when it comes to acting.

If those episodes are the five-star episodes, there are also several four star offerings. Roadrunners, Invocation and Via Negativa are three amazingly powerful episodes, that miss the five star mark only because they are so dark and intense that they need David Duchovny's natural lightness and black humor to give them a bit of balance. But all three episodes make good use of Agent Doggett's character, particularly Invocation. If you are a parent, Invocation will stay with you for a very long time. Empedocles is of the same stock as these episodes and is elevated by Duchovny's wit and charm. However it is not their equal, story-wise. Neither are another two other Duchovny eps, Vienen and Alone.

The rest are servicable and worth at least one viewing. However they suffer iin comparison to the others in the season, especially in comparison with the Myth Arc. It's impossible to construct a season of television around the absence of your lead, and the X Files cannot be faulted for telling other types of stories. Hence Redrum,Patience, Surekill, Salvage, The Gift, Badlaa, and Medusa are all well crafted and worth a watch, but feel inconsequential in context. Medusa is the worst of the lot, and seems a lot of huffing and puffing about nothing.

But every season since the beginning was like that. In retrospect, it seems that the Mythology was the most substantial aspect of the series, especially when watched in sequence. As time goes by, the stand-alones seem less interesting and important to me. But they're still X Files episodes, which makes them better than most other shows on TV.

Editorial Review:

Now you can own the entire eighth season of THE X-FILES™. ALL 21 classic episodes are available for the first time in this exclusive 6-disc collector's edition. From the arrival of Agent John Doggett in "Within" and Mulder's miraculous resurrection in "Deadalive" to the birth od Scully's baby in "Existence," these Season Eight episodes are a must of every X-Files fan!

I Took a Chance 5 out of 5 stars.

The X-Files movie Fight the Future is the only X-Files movie or TV series that is out of print on DVD. There will be a Blu-Ray Edition coming in December 2008 but for DVD fans who have just been catching up on the series they've been out of luck looking for a new copy. At least not from someone besides a third party vendor on Amazon or an eBay scalper at outrageous prices.

I lucked out finding this Movie three pack which contains Fight the Future along with Chain Reaction and Independence Day. The product description at Amazon lists that all three movies are in full-screen but they are actually all in widescreen (which is better). All three movies are packaged individually inside the box set with their own shrink-wrap including the otherwise out of print The X-Files. A LOT of multi-movie DVD packs either put all of the discs in one set or the individual movies in cheap-o slim-pack cases. The films in this set come in their own regular DVD packages which is what I was looking for.

This is the ONLY way to purchase Fight the Future new without going through a lot of hassle. The price is cheap too considering you also get two other movies.

The X-Files Movie box says the movie is in "Enhanced Widescreen" and it is. The product is exactly as described on the box but it doesn't come with the 8-page booklet which was packed into the original release. I'm fine with that since I was looking all over for a new copy of the movie for months until I found this.

Fun fact: The X-Files movie takes a rather vulgar dig at Independence Day (one of the other packed movies) in the scene where Mulder meets Martin Landau's character for the first time. I find it humorous that this is one of the movies the DVD comes with.

IF YOU DON'T MIND A FEW ASIAN CHARACTERS ON THE BOX, YOU CAN GET THE COMPLETE SET SHIPPED TO YOUR DOOR FOR $75.00.

I hope at this price Mulder and Scully are included 1 out of 5 stars.

I am a huge fan of this series, even though the last couple seasons "jumped the shark". I loved the first feature film "Fight the Future" (1998). I have yet to see the most recent film "I Want to Believe" (2008) but I really want to, despite the negative reviews it received.

I am still wanting all seasons and film(s) on DVD, but the Fox keeps re-releasing them. I suppose this is a money making ruse. Yet the cost of all nine season set is $809.99? I don't get it. What do I get for this price? I hope characters come to life once the disc is put in the player. In all honesty, the X-Files were one of the best shows on television, but not at this price.

Reflections of a smoking man. No ,really. I'm smoking. 5 out of 5 stars.

Does it get any better than the X-Files? Each episode is packed with more thrills, chills and strange turns of events than most blockbuster films you shell out ten bucks to see. The X-Files has the advantage of a team of writers committed to creating stories based loosely in fact and incorporating frequently from the pages of history.
Political cover-ups, mind control, and reports of extraterrestrial contact an elite team of government officials is quick to stifle. None of this can be relegated to the annals of science fiction. Only a victim of memory altering experiments will suggest that the government is open and honest about its science and its knowledge of the strange and alien that Fox Mulder is so passionate about.
The X-Files succeeds because most of us believe that certain events and discoveries have been quickly concealed for the so-called good of the population. Some of us are more extreme than others. True conspiracy fanatics have come to regard the X-Files creators as harbingers of the truth, cleverly doling out information through pop television.
Most, though, simply enjoy the brilliance of each episode, as our hero Mulder, with his linear, skeptical and yet strangely sexy sidekick, Scully, uncover more phenomenon than most Hollywood producers could dream of in a lifetime.
Mulder is a loveable FBI agent in spite of his almost manic drive to uncover the truth, the product of a childhood experience that haunts him. Scully is like the sister you just want to shake and douse with water as she doubts what she sees even as ghoulish things slither from sewers in front of her.
The beauty of this show is that it doesn't rely on any one thing. The conspiracy theme can stand on its own because it is steeped in truth and it is apparent that the writers believe. The story lines are fascinating and often disturbing, whether you believe that such strangeness exists or not. The regular characters (you will love and hate the shady and infinitely powerful "smoking man" if you have not already met him) are joined each episode by new and dynamic players created by brilliant minds.
I received the entire X-Files collection as a gift and it is a durable one. I have almost gone through them one by one and, I suspect, I will one day do it all again. Because the truth is out there, my friends. And I'd like to be among the chosen one when THEY finally come for us.

Wait for the Complete Collector's Edition 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Yes, this package is pricey but I read on tvshowsondvd com that on Nov. 6, 2007 the studio is releasing the Complete Collector's Edition. A whopping 61 disks (but no briefcase) - All 9 seasons and the movie and gobs of extras. The number of disks per season matches the original releases and NOT the slim sets. MSRP is $329.98 (that's $5.41 per disk), so Amazon's price will probably be under $300.00 should they decide to offer it.

So, if you want to pay an additional $220.00 for the "cool" briefcase, get this one. If not, wait 'til November.

MISREPRESENTED LISTING 1 out of 5 stars.

This Amazon-exclusive bundle contains all 9 seasons in the original, collectible boxed set format. This is untrue. This briefcase edition does not contain the thick first release box sets. What it does contain is a booklet with vinyl pages that hold all the discs. Amazon`s listing pictures the boxed sets which is very misleading. If you want the first released thick boxed sets don`t buy this item. Also this item is not exclusively available through Amazon. It has been released outside of the U.S. and contains foreign language not English on the packaging. I hope this posting prevents other buyers from such frustration of receiving something different than what is described.

Tobacco is the original gateway drug. Many people who develop addictions start with tobacco use. Tobacco X-Files cleverly combines teen interviews with a series of stated, over-the-top gross-outs that are guaranteed to engage teen viewers. It also features an interview with a woman who is dying of lung cancer and has a stoma (hole) in her throat through which she receives treatment. Shows the deadly effects of nicotine use and its connection as a gateway drug to further experimentation with drugs and alcohol. Closed Captioned.
