Editorial Review:

The timeless themes of love and marriage in Jane Austen's superb romantic comedy "Pride And Prejudice have captured readers for generations; the novel has sold more than 20 million copies and has never been out of print. Now, A&E and the BBC have brought this beloved classic to life in a compelling production directed by "Upstairs, Downstairs'" Simon Langton. This stunning production captures all the celebrated beauty of the English countryside and its glorious, stately manors. It features lavish costumes and an exquisite soundtrack from noted composer Carl Davis. "Pride And Prejudice" is the story of the lively and rebellious Elizabeth Bennet, one of five unmarried daughters living in the countryside of 19th century England. In a world where obtaining an advantageous marriage is a woman's sole occupation, Elizabeth's independent manner threatens her family's future. Will her romantic sparring with the mysterious and arrogant Darcy end in misfortune - or will love's true nature prevail?

Major sound problems 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I just received this for Christmas and was so excited to reconnect with Dr. Quinn. I loved this show when it was on and I started watching right away. Unfortunately the sound was completely out of sync. I jumped around to many episodes and they were all out of sync. I will be sending this back and hope that the new set doesn't have these problems so I can enjoy the show!!!!

Anyone else had these problems?

Great series but... 4 out of 5 stars.

This is an excellent series, but be aware that these DVDs do NOT have closed captioning or subtitles. Also, the packaging is flimsy. The studio definitely skimped on this set.

No captions; no subtitles 4 out of 5 stars.

We just watched the pilot episode and enjoyed it thoroughly. BUT there is no close-captioning and no subtitles. We would have paid more to have that feature.

Packaged in a gorgeous faux-leather photo album that will pop off shelves and coffee tables, this collectible scrapbook of memorabilia chronicles the beautiful romance of Dr. Quinn and Sully and contains the entire series together for the first time---a must have for any fan.

Editorial Review:

Sir Jeremy Isaacs highly deserves the numerous awards for documentaries he has earned: the Royal Television Society's Desmond Davis Award, l'Ordre National du Mérit, an Emmy, and a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II. His epic The World at War remains unsurpassed as the definitive visual history of World War II.

The Second World War was different from other wars in thousands of ways, one of which was the unparalleled scope of visual documents kept by the Axis and Allies of all their activities. As a result, this war is understood as much through written histories as it is through its powerful images. The Nazis were particularly thorough in documenting even the most abhorrent of the atrocities they were committing--in a surprising amount of color footage. The World at War was one of the first television documentaries that exploited these resources so completely, giving viewers an unbelievable visual guide to the greatest event in the 20th century. This is to say nothing of the excellent, comprehensible narrative. Some highlights:

  • A New Germany 1933-39: early German and Nazi documentation of Hitler's rise to power through the impending attack on Poland
  • Whirlwind: the early British losses in the blitz in the skies over Britain and in North Africa
  • Stalingrad: the turning point of the war and Germany's first defeat
  • Inside the Reich--Germany 1940-44: one of the most fascinating documentaries that exists on life inside Nazi Germany, from Lebensborn to the Hitler Youth
  • Morning: prior to Saving Private Ryan, one of the only unromanticized views of the Normandy invasion
  • Genocide: this film is one of the most widely shown introductions to the Holocaust
  • Japan 1941-45: although The World at War is decidedly focused more on the European theater, this is an important look into wartime Japan and its expansion--early 20th-century history that lead to Japan's role in World War II is superficial
  • The bomb: another widely shown documentary of the Manhattan Project, the Enola Gay, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki

The World at War will remain the definitive visual history of World War II, analogous to Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. No serious historian should be missing The World at War in a collection, and no student should leave school without having seen at least some of its salient episodes. Rarely is film so essential. --Erik J. Macki

You're not a true Python fan until this is in your collection! I have waited three years for a price reduction. Amazon heard my pleas. Well worth the wait!

It's........... AWESOME. 5 out of 5 stars.

What a deal! I've been pining for (the fijords) this DVD set for years, and when I saw that it was only $40, I had to jump on it. The Pythons are the Beatles of comedy, and this set is spectacular. The menus are great; you can watch whole episodes, or pick just the skits. There's all kinds of trivia too. The bonus features include the Hollywood Bowl performance, and a reunion special from Aspen ten years ago. I am so happy to finally have this amazing series in my collection, along with the Python movies.

Great set, one annoyance 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a great dvd set for any Phillies fan. But as mentioned previously, you really have to wonder what genius decided to place the MLB watermark in the upper right of the frame. Though it's small, it gets distracting. A simple lower opacity watermark in the lower 3rd would have sufficed. We get it, we're watching an MLB product. A glaring negative on an otherwise great product.

MORE LOGO's ?? 3 out of 5 stars.

Just got this set today and only watched a brief portion to see how the quality was. It's impressive. But was it really necessary to put the Major League Baseball Logo right below the FOX logo throughout the entire game and series?? It's a bit of a distraction.

The Universe -- a mind boggling revelation 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Ahhh the Universe, a mind-boggling, imagination-defying subject. This is an excellent documentary, presented in layman's terms, of what the universe is all about. No complex terminologies or head scratching terms, everything is laid out in a simple and comprehensible presentation. It reveals places in our solar system that is totally outrageous and different in Earth's standards. Your imagination will start to unfold as the scenes visits the surface of each planet--Venus being a hellish place where volcanoes abound, Mars having the tallest Volcano in the solar system measuring 15 miles high, Jupiter having the biggest and longest running storms, Saturn having no solid surface, Neptune with seas of liquid methane and Uranus whose poles are tilted sideways. It also dwells on the galaxies whose size and distance from the Earth just purely defies the imagination! This documentary will open your mind (and fascination) on how the Universe functions.

Complete perfectly season 1 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The season two of the History Channel serie completes perfectly the season one. The only regret, for me as a non English speaking viewer, is that there is no subtitles, even closed captioned as written by mistake on the Amazon.com website. But the whole pictures and special effects are wonderful, and the scientists speeches are perfectly understandable by foreigners. For all those interested by astronomy, it's a must to buy, like the season one.

In depth 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

If you liked the first season, you will enjoy this one also. It breaks the various chapters down quite well without too much repetition which you would expect in a lecture mode. This documentary draws enough analogies to relate to the layman. sometimes the Jazzed up music detracts somewhat from the seriousness of the material. For that any BBC production wins hands down. I would also like the History Channel production to be more broadminded and global in their coverage. Too much coverage on discoveries and talks from inside the USA. Is there no groundbreaking astronomy conducted anywhere else on the globe?

Editorial Review:

Bertie Wooster is feeling a bit shy of the mark when his new valet reports for duty, bringing with him a much-needed cure for the effects of the previous night's excesses. On the strength of this sterling debut, Jeeves is formally retained, and the unsuspecting servant is thrown headlong into the glorious mix of overbearing aunts, unbidden guests, friends in need and romantic entanglements that is Bertie's lot in life.

To millions of devoted fans, P.G. Wodehouse's "Jeeves and Wooster" stories are a delightful obsession, an irresistible and irreverent romp through the drawing rooms of Edwardian England's tweedy elite. Now, these comic masterpieces come to life in acclaimed productions with an extraordinary cast that features Hugh Laurie (Sense and Sensibility, Strapless) as the well-meaning but dim aristocrat Bertie Wooster, and Stephen Fry (Wilde, Cold Comfort Farm) as Jeeves, his hilariously arch and resourceful valet. This 8-DVD collector's set includes 23 digitally restored and remastered episodes.

Not The Everyman's Emma 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I think, to a certain degree, comparison with Douglas McGrath's 1996 movie featuring Gwyneth Paltrow is inevitable. However, I must alert my reader to the fact that - when I praise this alternate version from Diarmuid Lawrence - I do so with the original novel in mind. This mini-series has not a movie's glamour, nor does Kate Beckinsale match Paltrow in beauty. However, with regards to Jane Austen's beloved work, this is undoubtedly the more faithful adaptation. Beckinsale's portrayal is less flighty and silly then Paltrow's... she carries the character's grace perfectly in every scene. The superb Samantha Morton, despite her slimness, is a perfect Harriet Smith; it is hard to make so stupid a girl endearing, but Morton does it with such apparent ease even her must enthusiastic fans must believe what they see. Lucy Robinson (better known by most as Mrs. Hurst from Simon Langton's 1995 "Pride and Prejudice") is so wonderfully obnoxious she almost undoes Mrs. Elton, who should be unbearable, but is instead wonderfully entertaining in both vanity and snobbery. Olivia Williams (The Jane Austen of Jeremy Lovering's "Miss Austen Regrets") is truly beautiful... more beautiful perhaps then the title character. What is more, she sings like a nightingale! Together with Raymond Coulthard as Frank Churchill (who is almost too charming to garner dislike as he should), the two make an astonishingly handsome couple. Mark Strong is not a very polished Mr. Knightley, but he plays the part admirably, with feeling, and with forethought which is apparent in his actions as well as his expressions. Even Prunella Scales, who must compete with Sophie Thompson for the title of "Best Miss Bates" withstands all independent criticism. Despite being somewhat rough, the production values grow better upon review... those subtleties in the use of music, camera-shot etc will become more evident and thereby easier to appreciate. Truly rewarding, for those who will properly attend to it.

The Presidents 4 out of 5 stars.

I bought this DVD after seeing it on the History Channel. I loved the way the History Channel presented the story of each president. It made learning about the Presidents attainable and comprehensive. I bought it because I am a history teacher and felt that it taught the children about a president in a quick and concise manner.

Amazing Product 5 out of 5 stars.

This is an outstanding set. I love the information contained on all the presidents. My kids actually enjoy watching this. I told them that the information learned was like hearing gossip... How fun and informational. Even if you are not a history buff you will enjoy this set.
