1950 PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES vs NEW YORK YANKEES 1980 PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES vs KANSAS CITY ROYALS 1983 PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES vs BALTIMORE ORIOLES 1993 PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES vs TORONTO BLUE JAYS Relive all the classic moments of four Phillies World Series appearances in 43 years in this one-of-a-kind digitally-preserved DVD. Led by Richie Ashburn, Robin Roberts, Jim Konstanty and Del Ennis, the 1950 "Whiz Kids" won the pennant on the last day of the season and faced the New York Yankees in the Fall Classic. Thirty years later the greatest moment in Phillies history took place at Veterans Stadium when Tug McGraw struck out Kansas City’s Willie Wilson. The scoreboard said it all: WORLD CHAMPIONS! Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Larry Bowa, Greg Luzinski, Garry Maddox and Bob Boone anchored the Phillies. Schmidt and Carlton were joined by the likes of Joe Morgan, John Denny and Al Holland to win another Phillies NL pennant in 1983 and a trip to the World Series against Baltimore. In 1993, Lenny Dykstra, Darren Daulton, John Kruk Curt Schilling, and Mitch Williams led a wild and crazy bunch to an upset victory over Atlanta in the playoffs. In dramatic fashion, Toronto won a second consecutive World Series championship.

Nice improvement over VHS 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I have loved the series since watching it as a child on TV with my father and uncles who had all served in that war. The subject matter and the wonderfully appropriate musical score strike an emotional chord in me. I have owned Victory at Sea in VHS format for several years and wanted to upgrade so in spite of some reviewers crabbing about the sound I bought the DVD set anyway. I love it. It is a huge improvement over the tapes. The picture quality is much better and any sound problems during narration that I've noticed are minor and not a reason to pass this up.

Style quite dated & often annoying but the content often provides a different perspective on aspects of WW2 2 out of 5 stars.

This DVD uses ancient reviews to substantiate its claim to being an excellent video. Whilst it might in its day have been the epitome of excellence, the whole production now seems excessively melodramatic with the accompanying music far too loud & dramatic. This aspect tends to detract from ones viewing pleasure.

I am always wary of productions produced so soon after the war as the emotions were still too raw to allow for a balanced factual account of the events. This video must plead mea culpa to this charge. Certain episodes are more prone to this weakness. The one on the island hopping campaigns comes across as subliminal propaganda & with even a hint of jingoism. It would probably rate one out of ten for objectivity. This is extremely irritating & distracting.

In addition a number of scenes are clearly re-enactments after the fact but the video itself makes no mention of this fact.

On the positive side, there are a number of episodes where fresh views, from this reviewer's perspective, were obtained of events, albeit minor in the greater scheme of events. Despite the tone of the episode on the Leyte Gulf battle being inappropriate, this is the first complete exposition of this climactic sea battle that I am aware of on video. In the battle, the Japanese navy staked all to achieve the destruction of the American fleet. This entailed the convergence of no less than four Nippon battle groups. The Oriental nation's aims were easily thwarted often with a dollop of good luck but the American fleet prevailed. The capture of the Philippine islands meant that their umbilical cord to the oil & other raw material was irrevocably severed. The lack of this vital sustenance would ultimately & ineluctably mean the demise for Japanese military aggression & its political construct, the so-called Greater Japanese Co-Prosperity Sphere.

The time dwelt on each aspect covered bears no relation to its importance in the war but rather, one suspects, to either available footage, the producer's proclivities or American bias. Certain actions deserve more focus due to either their importance to the war effort or because of its consequences or lessons learnt. An example which quickly springs to mind is the battle of D-Day which is scantily dealt with. Nowhere does one get a sense of its significance.

This is the most comprehensive account of the naval dimension of WW2. This focus provides a peek into a different component of the war. One gets no sense of the strategic thought processes in this video but one is rather shown a series of unrelated events with no binding central theme apart from its naval dimension. The purchase of this DVD is not recommended unless one is an aficado of naval history. For the rest of you, rather wait for another version which, given the enduring interest in all matters relating to WW2, cannot be long in coming.

Insightful 5 out of 5 stars.

Barack Obama has had a very fascinating life. This documentary was very informative and really gave you good perspective of where he came from and how it formed who he is today. This is a very limited updated version to include the Presidential race. I cannot wait until a true Presidential race and Election biography comes out!

Barack Obama biography 5 out of 5 stars.

This is very well put together. If you don't respect Obama before you see this, you will after you watch it. It let me know that he can relate to middle-class & lower class people. Thanks to the author who put the dvd together. Thanks to Amazon for carrying any & all items I am looking for.I always turn to Amazon for my learning needs.

Editorial Review:

When he called himself "a skinny kid with a funny name" at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, his political star was already on the rise. By the time he decimated the competition in 2004 race for the Illinois Senate, he was the bona fide golden child of a Democratic party desperately in need of a winner. In many ways, the story of Barack Obama is a uniquely American tale of the 21st century, where racial lines are blurry and the most interesting chapter is just beginning.

Outstanding 5 out of 5 stars.

Saw this movie first on the A&E network. Just came across it channel surfing. After watching a part I looked til it was on again and watched the whole thing. It was outstanding. Rick Schroder is excellent in this performance. This is a story of a battle largely unheard of in the history books.

Lose No Time, buy this at Once 5 out of 5 stars.

Every bit as good as I remember it from when it first appeared on television. Rick Shroder is fantastic and all the characters have depth and believability. The back and forth between the enlisted men, the genuine love they have for one another, reminds me of my relationships with my comrades in Vietnam.

This is a very poignant telling of a true tale, a tale of how individual courage and commitment to one's comrades, bring meaning to what otherwise would have been an awful waste of life in a war of Trench warefare where wasted lives were the norm.

how could they make this junk? 1 out of 5 stars.

The true story of the Lost Battalion is an amazing tale, far more so than this schlock. Historically, this is a poor retelling. They also screw around and do lots of incorrect uniforms, insignia, equipment and in general alter relaity to make it "a cool story" on a low budget.

You want to know what really happened? go read "Finding the Lost Battalion.

This does no justice to the men who were there, who deserve far better than this poorly written and produced cheap production. Charles Whittlesey
is a hero of mine. A man to be respected for both his wartime serivce and the price he paiud afterwards. THIS is not Whittlesey.

I do not think I have ever been more disapointed by a film. Go watch What Price Glory if you want to see some WW1 stuff, or either version of all quiet on the western front.

Dead Parrot, Silly Walks, Cheese Shop and More... 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 12 people found this review helpful.

"Monty Python's Flying Circus" was created in 1969 by the BBC as Britain's response to "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In," the NBC show that was enjoying huge ratings at the time. The Monty Python troupe consisted of Cambridge and Oxford graduates John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin. American-born Terry Gilliam provided the show's surreal animated sequences, which were interspersed among the skits.
"The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus Collector's Edition" is a massive, 21-disc box set containing every episode of the show's four-season run. The series is uneven and has its share of misfires, but when the comedy lands, the skits are hilarious. The "Ministry of Silly Walks" hangs on the long-legged Cleese's unbridled lunacy in high-stepping around the office, making methodical turns with precisely looney leg contortions and never skipping a beat delivering the dialogue. The skit is slapstick performed magnificently, and it's hard not to break up watching it.
"The Cheese Shop" also features Cleese, this time as a customer trying to order a bit of cheese from proprietor Jones only to be told, after requesting by name every type of cheese on the face of the earth, that it is either sold out, no longer available, not carried, or on order. Watching Cleese go from mild annoyance to apoplexy is a riot. Other highlights include the "Dead Parrot," the lumberjack song, and "The Spanish Inquisition."
The set also contains "Monty Python Live," a collection bringing together nearly 30 years of live performances, including the vintage 1972 "Live at the Hollywood Bowl," the 1998 reunion "Live at Aspen, 20 Years of Python," and the original 1972 "Monty Python's Fliegender Zirkus #1" rare German episode. In addition, there are are six mini-documentaries in the "Monty Python's Personal Best Collection," with songs and sketches from the entire series. There are two new documentaries chronicling how the Monty Python team was born that feature interviews with the Pythons, rare vintage photos, and home movies. The set is also chock full of bonus features that take the viewer behind the scenes, offering insight into how comedy routines are created and developed.

Editorial Review:

Very possibly the most tragic waste of Oxbridge educations ever broadcast. The programme that made all of America sit up and say: what? That put Spam back in the national pantry, launched crossdressing as a national craze, and made Rene Descartes a household name. That dramatically streamlined the high-school geek identification process.

Escape in the fantasy of yesterday 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

The real reason for my buying this collection is the "black and white" set from season 65/66...For me "The Avengers" lost something when they went to color. I really enjoy escaping into that fantasy world of "Steed and Emma" as they confront and combat all thats not right with the world. Diana Rigg and Patrick Macnee have a wonderful chemistry together on screen that has rarely been matched since. There is also a "film noir" quality to many of the episodes from the black and white years with "Emma"...Castle Death, Too many Christmas Trees, Dial a Deadly Number, The Town of No Return and How to Succeed...at Murder among others all display the "noir" touch.
Before Closing I have to mention the bonus 17th CD thats contains a couple of the lost episodes of the very first season of the Avengers along with a third of another. I thought these shows were tremendous. I love live TV and thats what this was. A shame really that there are not more of them. However it peaked my interest in obtaining some of the "Cathy Gale" episodes. It was interesting to see Macnee play Steed in an entirely different way and to do it on live TV as well....very interesting and entertaining.

Editorial Review:

She is the perfect balance of sexiness and sophistication, wit and whimsy. The object of many prepubescent lads’ desires, Mrs. Emma Peel dazzled television screens on both sides of the Atlantic from 1965-1967. Starring Dame Diana Rigg as Peel and Patrick Macnee as John Steed, the Emma Peel era of THE AVENGERS was the high-water-mark of the groundbreaking series, with adventures more fantastic than ever. A one-stop haven for DVD collectors, this special 17-disc Collector’s Edition features all 51 digitally remastered Emma Peel episodes plus a new bonus disc containing three "lost" episodes from the debut season of THE AVENGERS, a ‘making-of’ documentary film, a classic Emma Peel cameo episode from THE NEW AVENGERS ‘77, and more.

Makes you think... 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I really enjoyed this show although I felt that after about an hour not much changed from hundreds of years after humans to thousands of years and it got a bit depressing on one hand but uplifting on the other. Mother Earth pretty much takes over and you can't even tell humans were ever on this planet. Worth watching though!

Editorial Review:

If humans were suddenly to disappear, what would happen to our planet – the structures we've built, the everyday items we take for granted, domesticated and wild animals, plants, trees? What would become of the things that define our species and leave our mark on this Earth?

Visit the ghostly villages surrounding Chernobyl (abandoned by humans after the 1986 nuclear disaster), travel to remote islands off the coast of Maine to search for abandoned towns that have vanished from view in only a few decades, then head beneath the streets of New York to see how subway tunnels may become watery canals.

HISTORY® takes you on an amazing visual journey in LIFE AFTER PEOPLE, a though-provoking adventure that combines movie-quality visual effects with insights with insights from experts in the fields of engineering, botany, ecology, biology, geology, climatology, and archeology to demonstrate how the very landscape of our planet will change in our absence.

Terrible story 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 8 people found this review helpful.

DO NOT BUY this series! After hearing for years about the vaunted "Jewel in the Crown" series, my wife and I checked out the tapes from the library and watched the whole thing. It was awful. The best DVD reproduction in the world couldn't save this film.

We thought maybe we'd learn a little history while getting caught up in the stories of the characters, but we were wrong on both counts. Maybe if you knew some of the history of India's emerging independence, the story would make sense to you, but to us, it was all muddled and obscure. And the characters and their stories were equally disappointing. About the only person you get to know is Merrick, and he's so reprehensible that you wish he would just go away.

We kept watching episode after episode, hoping that the endless mess of loose ends would get tied up in the end, but it never happened. Too often, at the end of a scene or an episode, we'd look at each other and say, "Huh?" That's probably not the reaction a filmmaker is looking for from his audience. Characters we cared about just disappeared from the story, with little or no explanation. Others who were thrown in for no apparent reason stayed on screen way too long. And what's with the author's obsession with homosexuality?

All in all, it was a huge waste of our time. Good thing we didn't pay any money for the experience.

Editorial Review:

Adapted from Paul Scott's The Raj Quartet, The Jewel In The Crown focuses on the human and cultural entanglements of the men and women struggling to adjust to the drastic changes brought about by the end of the colonial regime. From Gandhi's call on the British to "Quit India" to the birth of an independent nation, this magnificent eight-part series is brought to life through intricate storylines and a sterling British cast including Academy Award-winning, legendary British actress Dame Peggy Ashcroft (A Passage to India) and Emmyr nominee Charles Dance (Alien).Filmed on location in England, Wales, and India, and rich in mid-twentieth-century historical detail, this best-selling series narrates a stirring finale to the British Empire in India.
