A wonderful supplement for Colonial history/literature classes 5 out of 5 stars.

"What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; 'tis dearness only that gives everything its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed, if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated."

Thomas Paine's words are as essential today as they were more than two hundred years ago and this series is well worth your time if you have any interest in the American Revolution. Ken Burns' legacy as the father of modern documentary is felt throughout the 13 hours that comprise this splendid series by the History Channel; the combination of historical commentary, dramatic recreation, and maps detailing troop movements gives the viewer a supreb overview of the period driven by the revolutionary spirit of Rousseau, Locke, and Jefferson.

If there is any shortcoming to this series it is the fact that 13 hours is simply too little. I guess I'm never satisfied, but there's more to any story than meets the camera's eye...

Tony Award-nominee David Suchet is Hercule Poirot - dressed to the nines, impeccably mannered and infuriatingly arch, he is a detective like no other. Adapted from Agatha Christie's celebrated mysteries, each film features beautiful settings and an impeccable cast.

Now, for the first time, twelve of Suchet's feature-length Poirot mysteries are available together in this collector's set. Produced by Brian Eastman (Traffik, Jeeves & Wooster), these exquisitely crafted tales of death and deception were filmed on location around the world, and features enough murder and mystery to test the mettle of our inimitably beloved Belgian sleuth.

AGATHA CHRISTIE S POIROT: THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION contains all twelve A&E feature-length Poirot films:
THE MURDER OF ROGER ACKROYD: Poirot's retirement in a quiet country village ends abruptly with the death of his disagreeable neighbor.
LORD EDGWARE DIES: Intervening in a sticky marital situation, Poirot suddenly finds himself in the midst of murder.
MURDER IN MESOPOTAMIA: Poirot visits an ancient site in Iraq just before the head archeologist's unpopular wife is killed.
EVIL UNDER THE SUN: Death intrudes on Poirot's island holiday, and only he can determine who is responsible.
DEATH ON THE NILE: A pleasure cruise down the Nile turns deadly when a murder is discovered on board. Thank goodness Poirot is along for the ride.
SAD CYPRESS: The solution to a double-murder case appears to be cut and dry, but Poirot's impeccable instincts eventually lead him to the real truth.
THE HOLLOW: A weekend retreat where all the guests appear to despise one another finds Poirot hard at work doing what he does best.
FIVE LITTLE PIGS: Poirot agrees to help a young woman prove her mother's innocence, 14 years after being sent to the gallows.
THE MYSTERY OF THE BLUE TRAIN: When the daughter of an oil magnate is found dead on the famous Blue Train to the French Riviera, Poirot must investigate the past to reveal the killer.
TAKEN AT THE FLOOD: Mystery surrounds a young woman after her new husband is killed in the London Blitz, and the mystery deepens when a man who may be her first husband shows up dead.
AFTER THE FUNERAL: Following the murder of a wealthy patriarch, Poirot is called upon to begin an investigation. The case takes a wild twist however, when his prime suspect turns up dead.
CARDS ON THE TABLE: When a woman is found dead at a card game, four investigators--including Poirot himself set out to discover which guest is the killer.

Great content, horrible packaging 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

For some reason the creators of this documentary thought it would be a good idea to package the DVD in 100% post-consumer recycled material. As a result, it looks and feels of extremely poor quality, and the packaging will not withstand the slightest bit of wear and tear.

If they wanted to improve my opinion of post-consumer goods they colossally failed.

The quality of the actual content of the DVD is excellent, however.

When I buy a DVD, I expect to be able to store it with my other DVDs, but in this case, I'm going to need to throw the original packaging away and find an actual plastic case so that it can go on the shelf without being squished.

Clear picture and sound - wonderful series 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is for those who remember this great, great series and wish to own it, and also for those who have heard about it and want to add it to their collections, but are fearful that the quality of this set may be poor.

I recently purchased this set and found the picture and sound quality of these DVDs to be perfectly fine. If there is anything that may take some getting used to it's the variety of London accents of the characters, just as was the case in 1971.

This is a series shot in a studio for television in the early '70s, not some "blockbuster" film shot a year ago with 21st century technology. But this set looks and sounds the same as it would if Masterpiece Theater reran it on television today. It's perfectly clear all around. If you're inclined to buy this set don't let anything stop you. You will love every minute of it as much as I have.

Review from down under 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Just buy the complete series. It's like watching exquisite performances, you cannot watch more than an episode without feeling satisfied, and not being short changed. They also follow the original Stout stories almost exactly.
This was first shown in Australia on our national broadcaster in the earlier part of this decade. It is clear that the production values, including music scores and attention to details exceed those of the BBC in the same sort of period stuff (like the Poirot series with Suchet). The DVDs are excellent in terms of technical qaulity and play on universal players here.
If you have the money, just buy it.

Editorial Review:

Like Sherlock Holmes and Watson before them, the brilliant but curmudgeonly Nero Wolfe and his streetwise sidekick Archie Goodwin are crime's greatest nemeses. With Nero preferring to solve crimes at home amid his orchid collection, it is Archie who does the legwork about town to allow Wolfe to unravel the most confounding crimes. Together the duo cracks cases of murder, deception, blackmail, and more, resulting in an unforgettable confection of mystery, suspense, and style.

Faithfully adapted from the best-selling stories by Rex Stout, THE COMPLETE NERO WOLFE MEGASET stars Maury Chaykin (The Sweet Hereafter) and Oscar(r) winner Timothy Hutton (Ordinary People) and features all 20 episodes of the critically acclaimed A&E series, including the feature-length series pilot, The Golden Spiders.

Superficially Skims the Surface of History 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This isn't one of the best of History Channel's documentaries for good reason -- it wasn't a well documented period in world history. Consequently, the series seemed superficial at best and didn't convince me that it accurately portrayed this time period. It seemed to have a limited budget and was a half baked effort. Perhaps the depressing theme made it less than palatable for the production team. Perhaps it was already known most people wouldn't bother to watch it for more than a few minutes because it was a boring expose of a dark period in human history.

There did seem to be a responsible toning down of the twisted dark things of that period as far as torture for fear of sensationalizing these aspects. However, I must say this series was extremely boring and made me want to pick up a book of history rather than watch this drab documentary. It seemed to blame the entire Dark Ages on the fall of the Roman Empire and completely overlooked the harm fanatical religion caused.

Editorial Review:

At its height in the second century A.D., the Roman Empire was the beacon of learning, trade, power and prosperity in the western world. But the once-powerful Rome--rotten to the core by the fifth century--lay open to barbarian warriors who came in wave after wave of invasion, slaughtering, stealing, and ultimately, settling. As chaos replaced culture, Europe was beset by famine, plague, persecutions, and a state of war that was so persistent it was only rarely interrupted by peace. THE DARK AGES profiles those who battled to shape the future, from the warlords whose armies threatened to case the demise of European society, like Alaric, Charles the Hammer, and Clovis; to the men and women who valiantly tended the flames of justice, knowledge, and innovation including Charlemagne, St. Benedict, Empress Theodora, and other brave souls who fought for peace and enlightenment. It was in the shadows of this turbulent millennium that the seeds of modern civilization were sown.

Required viewing 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Schama is one of the polarized things: you either like him or can't stand him. This set presents the history of the Britain by NOT trudging through endless timelines. Instead, the approach is taken wherein specific people or events are examined that characterize a particular episode in British history. From each section of the DVD you end up with an impression, or at least a feeling of what they time period is thought to be like, even if you can't remember the specifics. It covers all two millenia of history of this island. The final few minutes are memorable.

Editorial Review:

From the dawn of civilization to the 20th century, A COMPLETE HISTORY OF BRITAIN re-animates familiar tales and illuminates overlooked aspects of Englnd s past. Written and hosted by historian Simon Schama (the bestselling author of Rembrandt s Eyes and The Embarrassment of Riches), this monumental BBC production has been hailed by critics for its colorful--and controversial--approach.

Discarding timelines and tiresome lineages, HISTORY provides a liveley look at the personalities and cultures that infuse Britain s past and examines the impact of this extraordinary heritage on the modern nation. From India to Ireland, the Norman Invasion to the American Revolution, Schama spotlights the epic themes and towering figures that transformed an island at the edge of the world into the greatest empire on earth.

All 15 episodes of the landmark series are available on DVD in this comprehensive collector s set.
