The antithesis of James Bond 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Reviewers here rightly comment on how refreshing it is to see a spy with a sense of morality. John Drake lives by a strict moral code. He is not a womanizer, and does not like violence. This echoes the life of McGoohan himself, who does not like filming love scenes because he doesn't want to kiss women other than his wife, and who is also very devoutly religious. When he was young he even for a time considered becoming a priest.

Other reviewers here comment on the "rumor" that McGoohan supposedly turned down the role of James Bond to play John Drake. McGoohan was asked to play James Bond before Sean Connery was. The real reason, reportedly, why he turned down the role (which also applies to the above) is that he thought the character was disgusting. In 1995 McGoohan said that this story, now itself stuff of legend practically, is not true. He said that the real reason he turned down the role is that the script for Dr. No was not any good and there was someone on the crew that he did not want to work with. McGoohan may simply be downplaying the story though, as some say he has actually turned down the role of James Bond several times. He also turned down the role of Simon Templar--he says because he didn't like the car that was to be used in the show, while others say it was because he objected to all of the kissing the character was required to do. He did, after all, make writers remove all love scenes from Danger Man. Incidentally, McGoohan was also the first pick for the roles of Gandolf in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films, but had to turn both down for health reasons. (He supposedly has very bad health--three years before he appeared in Braveheart the poor guy was in a coma for a year.)

Many have debated whether John Drake is No. 6 in The Prisoner. It may interest fans to know that McGoohan tired of making Danger Man (Secret Agent), due mainly to his not having enough say in how the show should be. He wanted the fights to be more realistic (he was a boxer in real life, after all), etc. He was trapped by a contract that he felt he was a "prisoner" to, and greatly resented it. Just as No. 6 quits his job as a spy, McGoohan wanted to quit his job playing one. One day, at a party, a conversation got started (I believe between McGoohan and a real retired spy) about what happens to spies when they retire from their jobs. This got McGoohan thinking about people who "know too much." Are they allowed to just quit? And so The Prisoner was born. As to the above question, George Markstein, The Prisoner's script editor, has said yes, John Drake is No. 6, whereas McGoohan himself has said no, he is not. To McGoohan, EVERYONE is No. 6. Everyone is a prisoner to a part of their mind and to the society in which they live.

Editorial Review:

Now, all 86 episodes from John Drake’s entire crime-solving career are available together on DVD. Each episode of this exciting spy thriller is presented in the original broadcast order, from the original season that aired only in the U.K. as Danger Man to the 47 episodes of Secret Agent that were seen internationally, including the two color episodes that provided a vivid finale to the long-running suspense thriller.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have set the standard for organizational excellence--team first, powerful pitching, class on and off the field--the blueprint for successful teams. The passion and excitement of Los Angeles Dodgers baseball was on full display in the first three Fall Classic® games in 1959. Each record-setting crowd at The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum swelled beyond 90,000. A tradition of October baseball was born in Los Angeles. In 1963, Sandy Koufax set the World Series strikeout record of fifteen in Game 1. Again in 1965, pitching was supreme, but this time the speed of the Dodgers charged the offense as well. The 1981 and 1988 World Series championships were fueled by the optimism of manager Tommy Lasorda.

Very Good Show and DVD Set! 5 out of 5 stars.

Human Weapon is a show that aired late last year on the History Channel and is hosted by martial arts fighter Jason Chambers and former football pro Bill Duff. They put their bodies on the line in every episode of this show and it was entertaining and informative on every style of fighting they learned. The best part of each episode was the end where one of the two hosts would take on a master in the martial art they just learned. Certain episodes feature such MMA stars as Cung Le, Randy Couture and Fedor Emelianenko!

Episodes include:
DISC 1: Muay Thai: Ultimate Striking; Eskrima Stickfighting; Karate; Savate Streetfighting; Bonus: Master Fights
DISC 2: Judo: Samurai Legacy; Pankration: The Original Martial Art; Krav Maga of the Israeli Commandos; Marine Corps Martial Arts; Bonus: Additional Footage
DISC 3: MMA: America's Extreme Fighting; Kung Fu; Sambo: Russia's Extreme Fighting; Cambodian Blood Sport
DISC 4: Silat: Martial Art of Malaysia; Passport to Pain; Ninjutsu; Taekwondo; Bonus: Master Moves

Get it!! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Let me put it this way - my wife has been asking me if she can watch it!! The show is great, as are the DVDs. Beyond the cool machines and the near death experiences, this awesome testosterone fest manages to draw the viewers into the lives of the people in the stories. By the end of the series it is hard not to feel connected with them. Whether or not you are familiar with the industry, you will definitely be entertained by the "colorful" cast. If you are a lumberjack you'll swear you've worked with these guys, or you have worked with someone just like them. If you are not familiar with logging, this is a great introduction. It doesn't get over-technical. You will come away with an appreciation of process as well as the people involved.

Editorial Review:

Explore the past and present of the rough-and-tumble logging industry in the first ever nonfiction series about the treacherous life of Pacific Northwest timber cutters, Ax Men. For more than a hundred years, larger-than-life characters, many of whom are members of logging families that go back to the time when the West was being settled, have spent their days among towering trees and powerful machines and their nights in outposts far from the comforts of civilization. Snapped cables, runaway logs and treacherous machinery are among the many dangers that threaten their lives and safety today. Follow four logging crews through a season in the remote forests of northwest Oregon and see how, plagued by mechanical failures, relentless weather and violent and unpredictable terrain, these men risk their lives every day in a constant struggle of man versus nature.

Editorial Review:

In the 1980s determined researchers began scouring the world for color film shot during World War II, and the result of their quest is spectacular. Seeing the war through the ubiquitous black-and-white footage has always made the experience somewhat distant, but in clear, crisp color, the enormity of the war and its horrors is startling and dramatic. Films of Nazi rallies are all the more disturbing; a viewer seeing the scene in color realizes the massive crowds saluting Hitler are no longer gray and faceless masses, but gatherings of well- dressed civilians. Color combat footage, from across Europe and the Pacific, is frighteningly immediate, and some of it, showing the wounded, the dead, and even prisoners being executed, will no doubt be disturbing for many viewers. Violence and destruction on an unimaginable scale is vividly put on display, as are smaller moments of soldiers smiling for the camera or liberated prisoners from the concentration camps staring in pained bewilderment. The episodes, produced by the History Channel, are introduced by veteran journalist Roger Mudd, and the narration for each individual segment typically contains excerpts from letters and diaries describing events close to those depicted in the film footage. The footage used is of a surprisingly high quality (much of it was shot and stored away, virtually unseen for decades), and it provides a stunning look at how the war appeared to those fighting it. --Robert J. McNamara

I gave this as a gift and the family loved it. They just don't make shows like they use to. The junk on t.v. today....I don't even watch it.
I'm glad you had this. Having the older shows available for us to purchase....priceless. Thank you.

Editorial Review:

If the first two seasons introduced one of the great television crime dramas, Homicide really came into its own during the third. Instead of the mere 13 episodes scattered between 1993 and 1994, NBC ordered up a full 20 for the 1994-1995 season. The entire terrific cast is back, with the exception of Jon Polito, whose absence is explained in the fourth episode ("Crosetti"). There are other changes, like the addition of Megan Russert (Isabella Hofmann) as shift commander. Aside from the fact that the mostly male staff now has a woman to report to (alongside Yaphet Kotto's Lt. Giardello), it turns out that Russert has a "history" with one of the detectives. Homicide always excelled in its exploration of racial and office politics; now sexual politics would become a bigger issue. Religion also comes to the fore as Pembleton (Andre Braugher) is finally forced to confront the loss of his faith while working on a case ("The White Glove Murders") involving several aid workers (episodes 1-3). Meanwhile, his partner, Bayliss (Kyle Secor), is coming to resemble the naive young rookie of the first two seasons less and less by the second... while getting to enjoy a little more romance than the rest of the squad--especially the hapless Meldrick (Clark Johnson). But all is not sturm and drang. Humor still finds a place in each episode and Munch (Richard Belzer) still gets many of the best lines. In the season premiere ("Nearer My God to Thee"), for instance, he tells Bolander (Ned Beatty), "There is no such thing as gratuitous sex. Gratuitous violence, yes... Sex cannot and will not ever be gratuitous." He could be describing Homicide itself, in which nothing is ever gratuitous, especially the sudden loss of human life, which is never--and should never be--treated lightly. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
