Editorial Review:

Sir Jeremy Isaacs highly deserves the numerous awards for documentaries he has earned: the Royal Television Society's Desmond Davis Award, l'Ordre National du Mérit, an Emmy, and a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II. His epic The World at War remains unsurpassed as the definitive visual history of World War II.

The Second World War was different from other wars in thousands of ways, one of which was the unparalleled scope of visual documents kept by the Axis and Allies of all their activities. As a result, this war is understood as much through written histories as it is through its powerful images. The Nazis were particularly thorough in documenting even the most abhorrent of the atrocities they were committing--in a surprising amount of color footage. The World at War was one of the first television documentaries that exploited these resources so completely, giving viewers an unbelievable visual guide to the greatest event in the 20th century. This is to say nothing of the excellent, comprehensible narrative. Some highlights:

  • A New Germany 1933-39: early German and Nazi documentation of Hitler's rise to power through the impending attack on Poland
  • Whirlwind: the early British losses in the blitz in the skies over Britain and in North Africa
  • Stalingrad: the turning point of the war and Germany's first defeat
  • Inside the Reich--Germany 1940-44: one of the most fascinating documentaries that exists on life inside Nazi Germany, from Lebensborn to the Hitler Youth
  • Morning: prior to Saving Private Ryan, one of the only unromanticized views of the Normandy invasion
  • Genocide: this film is one of the most widely shown introductions to the Holocaust
  • Japan 1941-45: although The World at War is decidedly focused more on the European theater, this is an important look into wartime Japan and its expansion--early 20th-century history that lead to Japan's role in World War II is superficial
  • The bomb: another widely shown documentary of the Manhattan Project, the Enola Gay, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki

The World at War will remain the definitive visual history of World War II, analogous to Gibbon's Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. No serious historian should be missing The World at War in a collection, and no student should leave school without having seen at least some of its salient episodes. Rarely is film so essential. --Erik J. Macki

Excellent version, and had no problem with subtitles or color 5 out of 5 stars.

This is by far the best version of "Pride and Prejudice". I believe I have seen every one of them and none compares. Laurence Olivier was great of course as Darcy, but Colin Firth has completely captured the character. I doubt that any one will ever be able to portray Darcy better.
I am extremely satified that I purchased the 10th Anniversary Collector's Edition even though I all ready had the original DVD of the same produecton. It is definitely well worth the price. I strongly recommend it to every one. The DVDs come in a beautifully designed case, and I thoroughly enjoyed the accompanying behind-the-scenes disc. Even though Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle were busy making other movies and could not be on it, the remaining cast members were very entertaining. The accompanying book, "The Making of Pride and Prejudice" gave wonderful insights to the production. It is extremely well written and full of delightful pictures. If you are a fan, even if you have never seen Pride and Prejudice--do not pass up this one.
I do not understand the complaints submitted in several of the other reviews about the color of the film or it's not having subtitles. My 50" television was set at the factory suggested controls, and the color in the DVD was superb! The "woods" were so green and lush it made you feel as if you were actually there with Elizabeth. As far as the subtitles are concerned, I simply hit the "mute" button on my television remote control, and the subtitles were there.

Editorial Review:

This cable-television biography about the life of Illinois senator Barack Obama was made before he began campaigning to be the Democratic party's candidate for the 2008 presidential race. Still, the program suggests Obama has one or another kind of profound, Anerican destiny as a mixed-race activist who never comfortably fit into one or another group, and had to look deep into his own roots to understand his identity. The son of a white American mother and black Kenyan father, Obama was abandoned by the latter when he returned to his native country to work for its improvement. Raised by his mother--whom Obama credits with teaching him many of his values--and his grandmother, Obama lived in Hawaii as a child but moved to Indonesia for a few years when his mom remarried. There, Obama saw cyclical poverty and the underlying factors that perpetuate it before returning to Hawaii. Interviews with childhood friends and his sister describe Obama's restlessness before attending Harvard law school and propelling himself into a life of public service and community activism. Often accused of lacking enough political experience to qualify him for the White House, Obama comes across in this show as a visionary and experienced consensus-builder who can reach across opposing points of view. --Tom Keogh (Rereleased in a 2008 Election Update edition)

Fascinating, but not the greatest source of information 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

The History Channel has once again made a pretty good documentary and view of our 43 presidential administrations. It kept me glued to the t.v. the entire time and really gave lots of information about the president's personal lives that a lot of people wouldn't originally know. However, I was sort of expecting it to focus more along the lines of a detailed background of their policies and accomplishments of their administrations, not their personal life.
The History Channel's "The Presidents" is a very interesting film, but if you are planning on using this in a classroom, I wouldn't bother because it doesn't focus on the most important information and the high points of their lives. If you are just interested in other aspects of our president's lives, the I would definitely recommend this for you to watch. It will be worth your time.

Barack Obama has had a very fascinating life. This documentary was very informative and really gave you good perspective of where he came from and how it formed who he is today. This is a very limited updated version to include the Presidential race. I cannot wait until a true Presidential race and Election biography comes out!

NOT Anamorphic 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 9 people found this review helpful.

First of all, let me start out by saying that this is an excellent collection of documentaries about the universe. However, for those of us with widescreen televisions, we should be aware that this collection, much like season one, is NOT optimized for our widescreen televisions. It is presented in 'Letterbox' format, meaning that on widescreen televisions it will be presented with large black bars on all sides, with the feature occupying a window in the middle of the screen. For those with 4:3 televisions, it will appear as all widescreen features do, but for 16:9 screens it is a major disappointment.

Great series! 5 out of 5 stars.

I ordered this series with the thought 'what more can they do?' I seen it all in season one, it cannot top that. Was I wrong!
It was even better.

To realize that the universe is about 13.7 billion years old, and so vast, that it's totally beyond our comprehension and still expanding. A truly unimaginable thought, that.
There are so many amazing episodes, one of which shows the largest objects in space. They are seriously big, like the so-called "cosmic web" of galaxies, which is a hundred million billion times bigger than Earth. Then there's the fascinating Lunar transient phenomena, the pulsar planets, the hot Jupiters, the weather in space, dark matter, dark energy, and much more. Really mind-boggling stuff, this!
For instance it's estimated that the impact of the asteroid that landed on the Yucatan Peninsula about 65 million years ago, wiping out the dinosaurs, this was equal to that of dropping a Hiroshima-sized atomic bomb every second for 140 years!

And another mind-boggling thought, where did we really come from... (hmmn..., still, I'd like to go to heaven eventually:)

This series had me riveted to my screen. The computer-generated imagery and other effects is so realistic. It makes one feel as if one is truly there experiencing this phenomenal aspects. And it's explained so simply that anyone can understand it.
My favourite episodes are:
Alien Planets, Dark Matter, Astrobiology
Space Travel,Unexplained Mysteries &
Colonizing Space.

A truly awesome series! Enjoyed every bit of it.

Stink Bomb 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This series is what I like to refer to as a 'Dime Bag' documentary. In true History Chanel format, this series foregos intellectual content beyond adolescent levels, opting instead to work in as much sensationalism as possible. For example, a chapter entitled "The Most Violent Places in the Universe", threatens repeatedly that Black Holes are "Out There.. Prowling the darkness". The series is packed with this kind of crap, and it seems the History Chanel would have you believe that something out there in the dark, scary, violent, universe holds some aganizing death with your name on it; Be it torn to shreds from 'Prowling' black holes, Crushed by a meteor, or violently engulfed by the sun, etc. Seemingly, many topics touch on the violent nature of your demise should you venture too close, be in the wrong place at the wrong time, or be wearing a lose neck-tie.. whatever. If you want to sink your teeth into something with some meat on it, I recommend "Steven Hawkings Universe", where the only sensationalism is in the amazing facts and details presented on topics such as the infinite density of primortial matter comprising the 'singularity' from which the universe and all elements of matter were created. The great deal of thought provoking subject matter had me walking around in a daze for days. As for the History Chanels Universe..Everything in it, you should have learned in elementary school. Buy it for your kids maybe.

Don't Blame A&E 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a brief correction to Vlad48's review, "Wiped Clean by A&E" -- Just to set the record straight, A&E (the releasing agent for this set) is not responsible for bowdlerizing the contents. The programs here are taken from the US distribution versions, not the original BBC masters. These are the versions shown on PBS back in the 1970s, and in America ever since.

I wish A&E had used the original masters, or that the BBC would release its own set, especially with extended commentary etc., as other reviewers wish for. Censorship of any kind sucks, especially with material this classic. I rate it 4, not 5, stars for this reason. All things being equal, however, it's Monty, so what's to cry about for the price? 16 dvds for under $60 is a bargain--it comes out to around ten laughs for every penny spent. Snap 'em up!
