Basis for US-Produced Cold Case and CSI's 5 out of 5 stars.

If you want a look at how Cold Case Files and CSI came to be,
then obtain the BBC-produced Waking the Dead (Seasons 1 and 2). Absolutely tremendous writing, superb casting and acting, and believable characters that you can relate to. Whereas the US-produced Cold Case, CSI, etc., present us with "cookie cutter" gender leads, the British-produced Waking the Dead is not concerned with the looks as much as the believability of the characters. We were so impressed with these stories and their presentation that we purchased Seasons 3, 4, 5 directly from Amazon.UK, because those seasons are not yet produced for our playback region. We even purchased an "all region" DVD player to watch these. If you want to experience made-for-tv drama the way it should be done, do not deny yourself this experience.

Refresing change of pace from American Forensic/Crime programming 4 out of 5 stars.

I discovered Waking the Dead on local PBS programming. The stories are compelling and the character development is excellent. The ensemble cast and slower pace allow a more cerebral experience. Certainly a refreshing change from the more "action" driven US programming.

More to come 5 out of 5 stars.

Just so you will know. This series is still being produced on the BBC. the Seventh series just aired starting April 2008. At this time, BBCAmerica has no plans to air the seasons 5-7. They will be bringing the next series in Wired in the Blood in 2009.
So--Go yell at the BBC to air Waking the Dead--you will really want them to do so--(spoiler alert)due to the fact that there is resolution to Boyd's missing son.

British Cold Case 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Season two of the British version of Cold Case with less music and more realistic detective work. The forensic specialists actually have to wear unattractive suits when investigating their cases. No cleavage shots and high heels here.

The character development is minimal, yet the characters are so rich and engaging because of the way they interact. Boyd is a unique detective, gruff and confident yet somehow likeable and not coming off as arrogant.

The only negative is the lack of extras. A documentary of the production and the actors would be very welcome. You only get the episodes and nothing else, but what enthralling episodes they are.

British crime drama doesn't get better than this! 5 out of 5 stars.

Waking the Dead is a fantastic series. Trevor Eve is incredible as the conflicted Peter Boyd. While there have been cast changes in the last season or two, the series remains as strong as ever. Fortunately, the original cast is still intact through the first four seasons. I hope Amazon will offer more seasons of this phenomenal show.
