First watched this from the British Council in India

Very true to Wodehouse's books!

Production values a little old-ish and the serial comes across as a little slapstick at times, but is entertaining provided you have read his books.

At times the repetitive cast can become dull since there are no new characters to expect but all in all I liked this serial very much.

Wodehouse Playhouse - The complete collection 4 out of 5 stars.

Anyone who likes brit comedy will like these. Short - 30 minute segments. and if you know Jeeves [Stephen Fry] & Wooster [Hugh Laurie], the names of the players will repeat themselves time and time again. My husband and I have enjoyed these, since the television programming is very poor these days.

Absolutely smashing 5 out of 5 stars.

I say, Old Egg or Crumpet, what ho. You know, jolly good and all that, if I must say so. Whatever minor quibbles might be shared elsewhere in this thread by naysayers, gangsters, procrastinators and all those other sorts of rubbish, there's just nothing like these short plays starring Alderton and Collins.
Being a frequent and avid reader of Wodehouse myself, I've long imagined the sort of atmosphere, manner, setting, tone of voice, and costume that these now friends of mine might have had. I must say that this series gets it spot on!
Read the books and stories, certainly. But then watch the series. You won't feel a bit that they've done a disservice to Wodehouse's genius. They are deadly funny.

An Absolute Pipterina! 5 out of 5 stars.

I say old thing, I didn't even know about this series until I happened upon it here on Amazon. Once I read all the other great reviews I had to have it. Now that I've seen it, I have to review it because it's a jolly good classic. I must say, 6/7 of the episodes are "the tree upon which the fruit of my love hangs." (however, the Minna Nordstrom episode fails to qualify) Before receiving this series, I had already collected all the Jeeves and Wooster DVD sets. I hadn't expected this one to be quite as good, but I actually find that I watch it even more often. As a matter of fact, I probably watch this one the most of all the DVD's I own! John Alderton and Pauline Collins are excellent actors and play the different characters swimmingly. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves British comedy. There are also 2 other seasons out on DVD that I'm looking forward to getting. (hint, hint) If they're anywhere near as good as this season, I know I will love them. Toodle-pip!

The Code of the Mulliners 5 out of 5 stars.

I have not reviewed the DVD; however, I watched the Code of the Mulliners so many times on PBS in the 70s that I had the dialog pretty well memorized. Cecil Mulliner's mother was going mad. Since we all know that madness is hereditary, Cecil had to get disengaged from the girl he loved but breaking an engagement is against the Code of the Mulliners. However, there were some quite brilliant chaps at the Drones Club to advise him. The solution was to employ a melodrama queen past her prime(Collins) to break things up. At a Savoy luncheon with his mother and fiance, Collins confronted him: "You swine!"...He: "Waiter some wine"... Collins: "You have treated me shabbily"...He: " Waiter! Chablis". To everyone's utter surprise, all turns out right for everyone in the end. Do not miss it.

very, very, very , very, very, very, dry English humor 5 out of 5 stars.

These programs are unique. Unless you like reading Punch magazine you may not like them. Even if you liked Jeeves and Wooster you may not like these. They are very subtle satires of aspects of English culture that many people do not understand.

On another note, the two main acting people play the main parts in all of the programs. This may or may not have been the best casting decision.

Finally, this presentation has the very insulting feature of canned laughter injected here and there. I would like the BBC and ITC to send the people who are responsible for this into being desert hermit monks

Without Pauline Collins pass on Wodehouse Playhouse 2 out of 5 stars.
12 of 15 people found this review helpful.

I would not have bought this DVD if I had known that it was the sans Collins version. First I am a great fan of Wodehouse done well. The PBS Jeeves and Wooster was beautifully done. Playhouse 1 and 2 was in the main beautifully done. Just 2 or 3 weak stories. The Wodehouse series, when played by regular actors, has in essence, some rather dumb scenes and stupid stories. It is the talent of Collins and Alderton that brings a new dimension and makes it so enjoyable. Collins sense of the ridiculous, is superb and quite unique. She has some of the most terrible lines and somehow makes them unforgettable. She:"Pah!", He:"Did you say 'Pah'?", She: "Yes I said Pah. Pah! Pah! Pah!" What can any other actress do with lines like that. Alderton is excellent but Wodehouse is possible without Alderton. Without Collins these stories are not worth much.

Every Bit As Good As I & II 5 out of 5 stars.

Sure, I love Pauline Collins too, but don't let the switch put you off this DVD set. The stories are every bit as funny as the first two volumes and in some respects better for having chosen some of the better P.G. Wodehouse stories. John Alderton is still worth the price of admission all by himself, but if you'll take my advice and come into the thing with an open mind, you might like the new girl very well as well.
