Christmas Shoes is one of the most moving stories of a modern Christmas. I am so moved by it that I bought the movie to watch every year. This year our church choir did a production of the play. I went to see another production of the same play, watched the movie with some friends, read the book, and read the other two books in the series about the little boy in the first book. That is how much the story means to me. It really helps us remember how we should put the people in our lives ahead of things, and jobs.

Mediocre At Best 2 out of 5 stars.

This is a weak film geared toward adolescents.

It is a musical with bad music. Not a good combination. It is boring, has very forgetful actors, and is just generally bad.

If you want to kill a couple of hours, there are many better ways to do it.

not the same as i think 1 out of 5 stars.

I am sorry to hear it's a cut version 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I really think this is one of best Jane Austen adaptations ever. I was sorry to hear that it is cut from the original. Unfortunately, none of them ever compares to the books because the books are, of course, masterpieces depicting the truest truths of human behavior. I highly recommend listening to unabridged audio versions that give them life but don't take away from the beautiful language.

Wonderful casting 5 out of 5 stars.

The actors chosen were able to tell Austen's story so well while fully embodying all the subtext inherent in the story. It was delightful to see the story unfold rather than being forced, the acting realistic yet still somewhat ethereal. We fell in love with the actors as much as the characters fell in love with each other.

Excellent Acting Not Enough to Save this Movie 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

There were so many positive ratings for this movie and we don't understand how that could be the case????

PLOT OF MOVIE - This movie is about a man named Robert (James Garner) who is married to a woman with Alzheimer's. He is visiting her in a rest home when he is snowed in and a woman Katherine (Julie Andrews) a widower offers him a ride home in her vehicle. Robert is very disagreeable and rude.

Robert was an arrogant, grumpy man, a chauvinist who complains incessantly. Katherine is an independent, intelligent, and successful woman doctor. Where is the common ground? Why do they go from hating each other to love? The script did not address this.

PLUSES - Both leading actors are believable in the roles they act. We have enjoyed James Garner and Julie Andrews in many acting roles; unfortunately, this is not the case here. Despite their excellent acting it was not enough to save this movie.

MINUSES - Script, plot and character development. They could have had something special here, but, they missed the mark completely. They could have explored the difficulties of loosing a spouse to Alzheimer's or the difficulties of life as a widower. There are a lot of emotions that could have been explored to give this movie purpose and depth, but, were not utilized. James Garner's character in the movie NOTEBOOK is much better.
The character of Robert was so rude and disagreeable and then him falling in love with Katherine with his wife suffering from Alzheimer's and in the rest home for only a short time (his daughters discuss that their mom has gotten "bad" for the past FOUR months) makes his character non endearing.

CONCLUSION - We would pass on this movie. If you are looking for a good HOLIDAY ROMANCE MOVIE than I would recommend looking at:
A HOLIDAY FOR LOVE with Melissa Gilbert and Tim Matheson or
THE CHRISTMAS CARD with John Newton, Alice Evans and Edward Asner or
A SEASON FOR MIRACLES(Hallmark) with Carla Gugino, David Conrad, Patty Duke, Lynn Redgrave, Laura Dern and Kathy Baker or
CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT with Barbara Stanwyck and Dennis Morgan.

If you are looking for a good movie about RELATIONSHIPS set at the HOLIDAY TIME than consider:
ONE TRUE THING(get the Kleenex) with Meryl Streep, Renee Zellweger, William Hurt or
ABOUT A BOY with Hugh Grant, Rachel Weisz or
THE ULTIMATE GIFT with JAMES GARNER, Brian Dennehy, Abigail Breslin, Drew Fuller, & Bill Cobbs.

Christmas blessings??? 3 out of 5 stars.

My 11 yr. old son and I watched this movie to get into the spirit of Christmas. Well, we ended up needing a box of tissues! It is a nice story, but it is sad. Many people unfortunately, do experience such holidays, but there is some good that comes out of heartache...

Not a great movie!!!! 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This movie was totally unrealistic. The whole show takes place within a short period yet four people fall in love, a little boy wins the hearts of two people, and a liver transplant gets diagnosed, an operation takes place and a recovery all just a few weeks before Christmas. It is not realistic at all. The writers didn't even show time passing to make it more believable. Also the man goes home because he decides he doesn't want to be a doctor anymore. Well it seemed like he lived a long ways away (at least in another town). Yet when someone is sick he takes them to his hospital where he worked even though it is a life and death situation. Also the little boy goes to the hospital to see his teacher and how does he get there? The whole movie is like that: very unrealistic.

Not The Everyman's Emma 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I think, to a certain degree, comparison with Douglas McGrath's 1996 movie featuring Gwyneth Paltrow is inevitable. However, I must alert my reader to the fact that - when I praise this alternate version from Diarmuid Lawrence - I do so with the original novel in mind. This mini-series has not a movie's glamour, nor does Kate Beckinsale match Paltrow in beauty. However, with regards to Jane Austen's beloved work, this is undoubtedly the more faithful adaptation. Beckinsale's portrayal is less flighty and silly then Paltrow's... she carries the character's grace perfectly in every scene. The superb Samantha Morton, despite her slimness, is a perfect Harriet Smith; it is hard to make so stupid a girl endearing, but Morton does it with such apparent ease even her must enthusiastic fans must believe what they see. Lucy Robinson (better known by most as Mrs. Hurst from Simon Langton's 1995 "Pride and Prejudice") is so wonderfully obnoxious she almost undoes Mrs. Elton, who should be unbearable, but is instead wonderfully entertaining in both vanity and snobbery. Olivia Williams (The Jane Austen of Jeremy Lovering's "Miss Austen Regrets") is truly beautiful... more beautiful perhaps then the title character. What is more, she sings like a nightingale! Together with Raymond Coulthard as Frank Churchill (who is almost too charming to garner dislike as he should), the two make an astonishingly handsome couple. Mark Strong is not a very polished Mr. Knightley, but he plays the part admirably, with feeling, and with forethought which is apparent in his actions as well as his expressions. Even Prunella Scales, who must compete with Sophie Thompson for the title of "Best Miss Bates" withstands all independent criticism. Despite being somewhat rough, the production values grow better upon review... those subtleties in the use of music, camera-shot etc will become more evident and thereby easier to appreciate. Truly rewarding, for those who will properly attend to it.

Avoid this episode 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This was a very upsetting episode because it changes the main characters into complete creeps. The actors do not act consistent with their characters that have been built up over the preceding three seasons. In Razor they are now shown to be completely amoral and criminal!
In particular Adama, who is a man that has garnered respect for his fair mindedness over the previous seasons, is now defending the murder of citizens. And we seem to be expected to be sympathetic to the woman who is involved in the murders of 20-30 innocent men women and children, because she is haunted by what she'd done. I'd have been more impressed if she and the other culprits were put up against the wall and shot. Also, the producers/directors have no concept of what makes a good commander. If in real life a commander turned a blind eye to his officers and troops shooting innocent citizens, he'd lose all respect and control of his troops (particularly as many of them have family and lovers amongst the people). Plus in real life, the rest of the fleet would have rebelled as a result of these murders as they'd be fearing they were next and could not trust the military to act rationally and protect them. They'd form their own partisan group and fight for freedom and justice. Instead, the rest of the fleet took no action against these atrocities. What rubbish! Also, why is the military continuing on if not to make a home world for the people, not just for the military. And how does shooting the people assist that goal.
The portraying of the criminal and evil behaviour of these characters as being acceptable is quite disgusting.
The show claims to be an adult show, but to me it's a show that primarily targets 14 year olds, beause many of them are still defining their own morality, and then adds disturbing scenarios and images in an attempt to appear adult.
It's a very disappointing episode. If you haven't yet purchased it, my advice is to pass this episode by and focus on the rest of the preceding three seasons. But if season four continues this amoral attitude, then it will be very disappointing.

Love It! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I purchased the VHS version several years ago and watched it last night for the first time in a long time. I remember having seen the movie when it was originally broadcast on NBC back in the late 90s.

For anyone who is a fan of Motown, the Temptations, music from the 50s-60s era - this is a must see! The movie begins in 1957 and chronicles the history not only of the Temptations but includes a lot of Motown history as well. The music is out of this world!

Because I'd seen the show when it was originally aired on TV, I realized that some key scenes had been excluded from the VHS; this was very disappointing. Note that the special was broadcast on two nights at 2 hours each and the VHS is only 2-1/2 hours long, you can figure that quite a bit had been cut. The pacing seems too quick on the VHS and you get the feeling that you missed something. Case in point: There is a scene that had been cut from the VHS that shows Paul Williams in the early years refusing a beer and drinking milk instead. But in the VHS version, the viewer is unaware of Paul's uncharacteristic descent into alcholism until later when his problem is obvious and one of the band members comments that Paul used to refuse to drink. When Otis informs the band (then called the Elgins) that they needed to come up with a new name before Mr. Gordy would allow them to audition, the boys banter names back and forth along the sidewalk in front of Hitsville U.S.A. Their struggle to think of a name was the scene that was cut and I no longer remember which one of the group came up with the Temptations. Anyway, that's just a small sampling of deleted scenes. There were many others.

I was pleasantly surprised to read in another viewer's review that the DVD contains the full version. It is well worth purchasing the film again just to have the full version, so I'm clicking this gem into my cart.

In closing, I think it should be mentioned that the movie was based upon a book by Otis Williams and that the story is told from his perspective. Although I loved their music, I was totally unaware of what went on behind-the-scenes. Sometimes fame exacts a terrible price from those who are unable to handle it.

Emotionally charged 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

No, it's not quite like the book. Is any movie as great as the book? I, too, enjoyed the earlier film version of this. The lighting and scenery are more beautiful than this one. However, I really enjoyed this version. The ordinary way it was presented made it feel more real, like I was there instead of watching a movie. I'm not an Austen expert, but having read the book I thought it captured the spirit of it. Captain Wentworth was SMOKIN', plus I identified with Anne immediately. It ended wonderfully despite the marathon Anne ran, and the kiss was worth the hour spent. The acting is good, the story is great, it's a good time to be had by all. If you are a purist go spend the time reading the novel, but if you want a relaxing hour of well written characters and a heart-wrenching story you've come to the right place.

entertaining if not a stickler 4 out of 5 stars.

As a huge Jane Austin collector/fan I would like to put in my 3 cents worth. Ive read them all and have the dvd's 2 of some (p&P) and if there is anything I can say is.,..never judge a dvd by the book, you will not enjoy it if you do.
very seldom will you find a screen play that is true to the book.It is not the same medium and cannot always be presented the same and then there is time constraints.I loved this particlar version and yes it could have been more like the former one (I did not care for the male lead)which was more true to the book. however it worked. I love Anthony Head as the arrogant and snobbish father, as a avid reader of period romace novels he rang true to what ive always pictured the upperclass of that period.
And how could you not like Penry Jones..he had what I call.. The Look..
(colin Firth has it) all in all as a whole I enjoyed it and have it in my Jane Austin collection.
As I said enjoy them all, dont compare them against each other but think of them as individuals, each a different perspective of different people.
