Loving Lovejoy 5 out of 5 stars.

Ian McShane from the film the Last of Shelia (see my review) and tv series Deadwood plays Lovejoy. An shifty and always down on his luck antique dealer who finds life and mystery going hand and hand.

The original show is from 1986, these three disk DVD set barely dates itself. The mysteries are fun and easy to follow. McShane is a winner with his wink and a smile.

All ten episodes of the first BBC series are here. It is British mystery drama without all the trapping.

Lovejoy is a winner

We've bought the first three years of Lovejoy and are enjoying them as much as we did when they first came on American TV. We hope eventually that all the seasons will be available. If you like British mysteries without violence and with a lot of humor, you'll probably love Lovejoy.

Lovejoy - The Complete Season 1 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a huge fan of Ian McShane and he "is" Lovejoy in this series. The Lovejoy books are my favorite and this series is a cleaned-up version of them. I can recommend them to anyone who enjoys antiques, humor and murder.

A Wonderful blast from the past! 5 out of 5 stars.

Great show from the past. Ian McShane is brilliant as the antiques dealer Lovejoy and his interaction with the cast of characters...Lady Jane, Tinker and Eric makes this show such a joy, no pun intended, to watch. This for sure is one of those DVD sets, where you get addicted to the episodes, meaning you intend to sit back and watch one episode, then you're on the second...third...putting in disc two with episodes 4, 5 6
I just hope they continue releasing the subsequent seasons. I have purchased seasons 1,2 and 3......watched them all, but there is no word yet on season 4's release.

Love Lovejoy 5 out of 5 stars.

We've been a fan of Lovejoy for years and are grateful the series is coming out on video for the USA finally!! Never saw this season before and really enjoyed it.

The adventures of Lovejoy are now available for viewing for the American audience, thanks to this new BBC release.

A sentimental favorite 4 out of 5 stars.

My wife and I discovered "Lovejoy" by an accidental viewing on television and were hooked since. It had a limited run then and I finally took the plunge and bought several seasons. The first few were not televised when I was viewing, so these are all new to me. We enjoy the cast and the shows provide a welcome relief from typical television fare. While based on books, the characters appear to be differently portrayed, with the main character being a little more loveable and less sleazy. Be forewarned: the first season has a little profanity and brief nudity that I was not expecting.
The plots are light hearted and usually entail Lovejoy helping someone in need though we are meant to think that he is a scoundrel. He is perpetually low on cash and always has a scam going.
I truly enjoy this series and am glad that I purchased this set.

Second best series of all of Lovejoy (IMHO) 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I got impatient and purchased this from England, but if the company that's been releasing them in the U.S. holds true to form--as they did with Series 1 & 2--then you'll get few extras, because these are essentially the same as the English discs. But it doesn't matter, as this series, and all Lovejoy, is eminently re-watchable. In this series, the players are all comfortable with each other and the scripts are a bit hit and miss, compared with the second series. But this series is not to be missed because we finally come to near resolution about the question; will Lovejoy and Lady Jane finally get together as lovers? Ah the tension mounts... You just can't go wrong with this finely crafted, five star entertainment.

Love that Lovejoy 5 out of 5 stars.

While Lovejoy may be an aquired taste, I love the rascally fellow. I enjoy the mysteries in the series. I also enjoy learning about antiques, and what is considered a real "find". While I am not an antiques collector myself, I can understand what it would be like to stumble upon a fabulous painting worth millions! We can all dream.

the best of the best Lovejoy! 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This is the fourth set of Lovejoy episodes. They had moved away from the grainy film and into the "warm" polished quality, which served to set the higher tone for Lovejoy. The episodes were deftly written, sharply directed and brilliantly brought to life by the cast. McShane is at his most lovable rogue in the best episodes of the Series!!

The Prague Sun (a movie length 2-part Christmas Episode has Lovejoy doing a St. Nic appearance!)

The Napoleonic Commode - Jane and Lovejoy find a Napoleonic commode, minus the bowl - if they can just "fix" that a bit they will score big

The Ring - Lovejoy needs money to float his new effort. He hits upon buying a series of painting and if he can sell one for a high price then he can sell them all. He calls upon old shady pals to see the price goes up, but it backfires when he pulls Lady Jane into the scam

Second Fiddle - has Tinker, Eric and Lovejoy in period costume (must admit while Tinker and Eric don't fare too well, McShane looks as if he was born for the period!) The episode has Lovejoy playing musical chairs with fiddles - the rare kind!

The Colour of Mary - Lady Jane shines in the episode when she gives her speech of how Mary Queen of Scots was executed. Lovejoy needs to find Mary's old pool table

The Judgement of Solomon - has a shifty major trying to shift stole items from the Jews during WWII, but our rogue is there to save the day for everyone

The Galloping Major - in a series of events, Lovejoy find an ancient cannon, which soon has everyone going around and around to prove it's a rare Cromwellian cannon

God Helps Those - Jane tricks Lovejoy into decorating a pub for a friend, also a friend of Tinkers. When Lovejoy and Jane get scammed, it's up to Lovejoy to help those in need

They Call Me Midas - an old friend lure Lovejoy, Jane, Tinker and Eric into role-playing for the weekend to sell a fake to an arrogant art collector

Irish Stew - Jane, Tinker, Eric and Lovejoy go on the knock up in Ireland and get caught in the mystery surrounding a dying actress and the missing ancient book

Dainty Dishes - Lovejoy and crew go to Brighton Beach to help Jane's distant relation. They go on a scavenger hunt for dishes to complete a special set, while misdirecting Charlie with chairs

Taking the Pledge - an old friend James Kinkardine looks up Lovejoy trying to get back an item he pawned, yet keep it away from the grasping ex-wife, while Jane is getting romanced and scammed

Lovejoy Loses it - a super episode where Lovejoy alienates Eric, Tinker and Jane as he goes on telly as divvy star. When he goofs on an estate evaluation, he has to pull himself around or face losing the people he cares about.

These are some of the best episodes. When I watch them I keep going "oh this is my fav!" - for each one of them!! They are just that good.

McShane is not gash! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This is an amazing DVD loaded with all the first season of
Lovejoy.
1) The Firefly Cage
2) The Axeman Cometh
3) The Sting
4) Friends, Romans and Enemies
5) The Judas Pair
6) To Sleep No More
7) The Real Thing
8) The March of Time
9)Death and Venice - Parts 1 & 2.

Included is an interview with McShane (part 1) where he talks about Lovejoy. Gash's grungy divey was tamed by McShane and made him a wee bit more acceptable to telly viewers, but he retained the essence and often used many of Gash's story lines.

The whole cast is great, the series is created with loving care and BBC gives a great package at a super price. Not to be missed by McShane fans or fans of the series.

500 minutes of pure delight!

Beware Region 0 claims from Resellers 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I purchased Season 1 from an Amazon reseller for around 90 dollars US, based upon claims that a Region 0 DVD will "play on any DVD player." WRONG! It is in the PAL format and if your DVD player is not a a multi-region one this DVD will not work. Fortunately I was able to purchase a compatible DVD player here in the states for a resonable price. Since this was a Christmas present that I purchased 90 plus days ago, I could not leave feedback. I highly recommend that this particular seller change his or her claims...pronto.

Thrice is nice! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is where Lovejoy really began to 'gel'. The characters were becoming more established and their ability to play off the other cast members really . These saw Witzend starting to take over production with BBC. They chanced from the poor quality film to a glossier warm look, more polish and professional. They came up with some really great episode. It starts off with Lovejoy Falling in love with Lady Jane's friend (the ever charming Johanna Lumley) and ends up with our loved rogues and lady in the Highlands.
in this series:

Friends in High Places
Out to Lunch
No Strings
Angel Trousers
Benin Bronze
Eric of Arabia
Scotch of the Rocks
Loveknots
Smoke Your Nose
Kids
Members Only
Highland Fling (Parts 1 & 2)

McShane just is perfect as the exceptionally charming sweet-faced individual, with a shady characters, warm heart and a gleam for sussing out the hidden gem in grannie's attic. Great writing and directing sees these one great series.

Double-Dip of a Divey! 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This is the second series of Lovejoy episodes. While the first still retained a heavy flavour of Gash's books, in series 2, McShane began to flesh out the dotty character and make it his own. I think these episodes are some of the best of the whole series. These were just so GOOD!

1) Just Desserts
2) Italian Venus
3) Bin Diving
4) Montezuma Revenge
5) Who Dares Sings
6) One Born Every Minute
7) National Wealth
8) Sugar and Spice
9)Raise the Hispanic
10) Lily's Pearls
11) Riding in Rollers
12) The Black Virgin of Vladimir (double episode)

You also get the second part of the interview with McShane talking about his character.

It just does not get any better than this. Again, super BBC transfers and a nifty price.

Lovejoy finally on dvd? 5 out of 5 stars.

I picked this up from Canada, Series two on 3 discs. This was a great British mystery show that aired on A & E in the early 90's then just completely disappeared. I never understood that. The only way to enjoy this show was to buy the 4 episode VHS set for a rather high price. Now, the shows can be enjoyed on dvd with the great English countryside as a backdrop for Lovejoy, Tinker, and Eric to do what they do best. The episodes are:

Just Desserts
The Italian Venus
Bin Diving
Montezuma's Revenge
Who Dares Sings
One Born Every Minute
National Wealth
Sugar and Spice
Raise The Hispanic
Lily's Pearls
Riding in Rollers
The Black Virgin of Vladimir

This also includes part 2 of an exclusive interview with Ian McShane. If you enjoyed this show when it aired over a decade ago, you must pick this up, great stuff. Over 600 minutes!
