Editorial Review:

"A horrible, vile, disgusting sitcom about four students who live in the most revolting house in Britain", The Young Ones became an instant BBC comedy landmark in 1982 by launching an all-out assault on the moribund sitcom, mixing Monty Python-esque madness with post-punk anarchy. There are no real stories, only a succession of often hysterically funny scenes as ingenious gags collide with deliberately corny lines, cartoon-like ultra-violence, pop music breaks, surreal interludes with characters ranging from the Three Bears to the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and gross-out moments based on various bodily functions and substances. Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, Nigel Planer and Christopher Ryan are the four housemates: Rick (Cliff Richard-worshipping radical sociology student), Vyvan (violence-loving punk medical student), Neil (put-upon suicidal hippie) and Mike (self-styled cool guy). Alexei Sayle appears regularly playing various mad Russians. Taking a cue from National Lampoon's Animal House (1978) the show now seems to anticipate the teen gross-out flicks of the late 1990s but to far more amusing effect. In retrospect The Young Ones is cheerfully un-politically correct in a way which may shock more now than 20 years ago; certainly some of the insults and drug-taking would have trouble getting on TV today. The first series was followed by a second equally hilarious series; Mayall and Edmondson played essentially similar characters in Filthy, Rich and Catflap (1987) and Bottom (1991-5).

The most hilarious comedy around 5 out of 5 stars.

If you like the British sense of humour, politiques and its intrigues, as well as a cycical way of looking at British politics, this is the series that you will enjoy.

The Yes Minister series, starring Paul Eddington, Sir Nigel Hawthorne, and Derek Fowlds, is set in the 1980's. The Minister for Administrative Affairs, the Right Honorable Jim Hacker, MP, is an ambitious minister who has real ambitions to make life for his fellow citizens better. Alas, if it weren't for his Permanent Secratary, Sir Humphrey Applegate, who usually has a different point of view on things, a bit like "a terrorist and his hostage" (although neither of them knows who is the terrorist or the hostage). Between the two chairs sits Bernard Wolley, Jim Hacker's Principal Private Secretary.

This series is state of the art comedy. It was created during the early Thatcher years to help beat the excessive power of the civil service that stalles all sorts of innovation for the purpose of "good government".

This series is still broadcasted on the BBC, so you'll be able to enjoy some free samples if you wish. Let me know if you like it :-)

Editorial Review:

The agonies of war torn Africa are deeply etched in the bodies of women. In eastern Congo, vying militias, armies and bandits use rape as a weapon of terror. Recently engaged to a young man from her village, 20 year-old Lumo Sinai couldnt wait to have children and start a family. But when she crossed paths with marauding soldiers who brutally attacked her, she was left with a fistula a condition that has rendered her incontinent and threatens her ability to give birth in the future. Rejected by her fiancé and cast aside by her family, Lumo found her way to the one place that may save her: a hospital for rape survivors set on the border with Rwanda. Buoyed by the love of the hospital staff, and a formidable team of wise women known to all as the Mamas, Lumo and her friends keep the hope of one day resuming their former lives, thanks to an operation that can restore them fully to health. A feisty young woman with a red comb perpetually jutting from her hair, Lumo faces the challenge of recovery with remarkable courage and sass. As she and her friends recover from surgery, they pass the days by gossiping and sharing their dreams of one day finding love. But when it looks like her operation may have failed, Lumos faith is thrown entirely into question. On this uncertain road to recovery, Lumo shows that the solidarity of women can bind the most irreparable of wounds.

lovely Loretta 4 out of 5 stars.

Four classic episodes from Loretta Young's classic anthology series, THE LORETTA YOUNG SHOW (aka "Letter to Loretta" and "The Loretta Young Theatre"). Young takes center-stage in stories that were always well-written and featured great supporting performances from a versatile cast. Perhaps more famous than the show itself was Young's grand entrance at the start of each episode, where she would magically twirl into the camera wearing a gorgeous designer gown (many people would tune in just to see what fabulous creation Loretta would appear in). Classic TV at it's height!

Includes the following episodes:

"Big Jim" - Loretta plays a woman with a shady past who comes back into the life of her now-teenaged son (played by Bobby Driscoll).

"600 Seconds" - Loretta plays a socialite who receives a mysterious telephone call about her husband. Her mind imagines all kinds of drastic scenarios centering on her husband's fidelity.

"Switch Blade" - Loretta plays kindly Sister Ann, whose hospital salary of 25 cents becomes the key to helping a friend in need.

"Cayuse" - Loretta plays a young girl who begs a handsome stranger to find her beloved pony Ginger.
--------------------------------------------
"Switch Blade" is the only episode that features Young's entrance. The other three episodes are taken from syndication prints (under the "Loretta Young Theatre" title), which omit Young's entrance.

Prepare to lose your mind 4 out of 5 stars.

In my opinion, The Young Ones especially are absolutely essential viewing. Especially for Americans, as they tend to labour under the impression that the English are all prim and proper. Can you decide if the gentleman is a driving instructor from Johannesburg, or really a vampire? Little Britain does nothing to preserve what is left of your sanity, with material that is often off-colour and off-the-wall.

Those comfortable around "alternative" British humour will like it. Those who have never encountered it before should realize that the jokes are as much in the context and the timing as they are in the situation or the words. These are NOT sitcoms.

As much as I like both the series, I'm only giving this four stars because they simply don't go together. There are much better pairings. I wouldn't suggest waiting for anyone to fix that, though.
