Great TV Historical Drama and Fine Documentaries! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I am not sure what people are whining about...nostalgia for the way it was on TV? The issuing of a remastered set, in chronological order, sans Old Indy bookends is a great way to get into the whole sweep of this gigantic Indiana Jones prequel. In point of fact, the continuity of the series is much improved over the TV originals now and the overall editing, is excellent, as is the quality of the picture.

The historical documentaries, based on the famous characters Indy meets in his adventures as well as overall historical documentaries are of such high quality that the History Channel has licensed the bulk of them to run on it's programming. If you tried to buy this material separately, it would run the price of the entire series minus the dramatic episodes! Yes, the list pricing is a bit steep, but you can find discounted copies here on Amazon and also at DeepDiscount as well as used copies here on Amazon.

A tour de force! Bravo! 5 out of 5 stars.

In a nutshell, these dvds are a treasure.

I have watched all three volumes with my third-grader son, and we both enjoyed every episode tremendously. This is the most enjoyable movie series I've ever watched. Some adventures are on the campy side, some very historical, some filled with eye-candy females, some non-stop action, all with the common denominator of either exotic foreign locales or lovely recreations of main-street America, and all undergirded by very inventive storylines.

Editorial Review:

The premise behind this revisionist Western from executive producer Jonas McCord (Earth: Final Conflict, Ask the Dust) was novel enough: veteran character actor Anthony Zerbe ran a Pony Express station, and counted among his diverse group of riders such future legends of the Old West as Wild Bill Hickok (Josh Brolin) and Buffalo Bill Cody (Stephen Baldwin; Christopher Pettiet would join them in the series' third and final season as a youthful Jesse James). Ostensibly, the Riders' job was to deliver the U.S. mail, but somehow, adventure kept intervening, and the Riders rallied valiantly to defend escaped slaves ("Black Ulysses"), give testimony in the case of a stagecoach massacre ("Speak No Evil"), and even deal with their own growing fame ("Ten-Cent Hero," which addresses the pulp mythologizing of Hickok). Of course, there was always time for a little romance as well, especially between Hickok and comely housemother Emma Shannon (Melissa Leo, who departed the show after this season for more modern pastures on Homicide: Life in the Street). A host of notable guest stars supported the uniformly fine cast, including Cynthia Nixon ("Gathering Clouds") and Chris Penn ("Matched Pair"). The lack of any extras is something of a disappointment. --Paul Gaita

I'm too old 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 24 people found this review helpful.

I bought this for my 19 year old. He didn't get past the first 10 minutes and said he was bored. I watched for 1 1/2 hours and realized that this was not that funny to me any more. Sorry Young Ones I sure did appreciate you in the 80's. I remember sneaking up late to the TV just so I could catch your episodes, but alas you are no more. Times have changed and lives move on. There MUST still be some fans out there. This is good comedy and written very good. I still advise everyone to buy it and give it a go.

Briliant British Comedy! 5 out of 5 stars.

Rik Mayall is a genius! He is undoubtedly "Bigger than Hitler, Better than Christ!"
I've been watching this Britcom since the 80s and even tho I've seen every episode at least 20 times, I still laugh out loud and continue to catch jokes I may have missed before.
You gotta watch Bottom, too! Simply Brilliant!

Better than before 5 out of 5 stars.

When The Young Ones were on MTV I was in my early teen. Now when I watch them I see and hear things I did not understand at the time. It is even better than before. It's a must have for everyone who ever watched The Young Ones growing up. The comedy is better and the music is just great!

Editorial Review:

"Anything could happen!" declares Rik Mayall, co-writer and co-star of British TV show The Young Ones--and he's right. Though this manic comedy series centered around the petty bickering of four layabouts living in a communal house in London--paranoid, hyperactive new waver Rick (Mayall), dense punk rocker Vyvyan (Adrian "Ade" Edmondson), lugubrious hippied Neil (Nigel Planer), and would-be sharp guy Mike (Christopher Ryan)--at any moment the show could switch to kibbitzing rats or romantic vegetables, or Buddy Holly could be discovered hanging from a parachute in the attic. Bands (as varied as Madness and Motorhead) suddenly appear in their living room and pound out a pop hit. It all seems a bit spastic at first, but the frenzy grows infectious, becoming funnier the more you watch it (in sharp contrast to most sitcoms). The Young Ones aspires to have the elastic energy and surreality of a living cartoon and comes pretty close to the mark. Guest stars include Emma Thompson, Terry Jones of Monty Python, and Jennifer Saunders of Absolutely Fabulous. This compilation also includes a few documentary features and a couple of episodes from other sitcoms starring Mayall, Edmondson, and Planer (Filthy Rich & Catflap and Bottom). --Bret Fetzer

Editorial Review:

Yes, Minister
The elegant sitcom-cum-farce-cum-sophisticated political satire Yes, Minister sets off Paul Eddington's Jim Hacker, Minister for Administrative Affairs, against Nigel Hawthorne's discreetly obstructive civil servant Sir Humphrey. The pilot episode, "Open Government," is curious in that it contains opening and closing credits different from and distinctly inferior to the rest of the series. You also sense that Mrs. Hacker was originally intended to have a larger role, with comedy focusing on the clash between political and domestic commitments, until the writers wisely decided to focus on the stand-off between Jim and Sir Humphrey, with Derek Fowlds's mousy private secretary Bernard making occasional interjections. While Sir Humphrey is at times a little too sinister for sitcom consumption, all the series' classic features quickly show up: Hacker's occasional Churchillian bombast, followed by panicky double-takes when flummoxed, and Sir Humphrey's unflappable verbosity as he brings the dead weight of civil service bureaucracy to bear against Hacker's naively optimistic schemes for open government and slashing red tape in episodes like "The Economy Drive." It's ironic that when Yes, Minister was first screened in the '80s, it was during the rampages of early Thatcherism in which government had never been less like the ineffectual politicking satirized here.
Yes, Prime Minister
Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn's superb sitcom Yes, Prime Minister entered 10 Downing Street with Jim Hacker now Prime Minister of Britain, following a campaign to "Save the British Sausage." Whether tackling defense ("The Grand Design"), local government ("Power to the People"), or the National Education Service, all of Jim Hacker's bold plans for reform generally come to nothing, thanks to the machinations of Nigel Hawthorne's complacent Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey (Jeeves to Hacker's Wooster) who opposes any action of any sort on the part of the PM altogether. This is usually achieved by discreet horse-trading. In "One of Us," for instance, Hacker relents from implementing defense cuts when he is presented with the embarrassingly large bill he ran up in a vote-catching mission to rescue a stray dog on an army firing range. Only in "The Tangled Web," the final episode of series 2, does the PM at last turn the tables on Sir Humphrey. Paul Eddington is a joy as Hacker, whether in mock-Churchillian mode or visibly cowering whenever he is congratulated on a "courageous" idea. Jay and Lynn's script, meanwhile, is a dazzlingly Byzantine exercise in wordplay, wittily reflecting the verbiage-to-substance ratio of politics. Ironically, Yes, Prime Minister is an accurate depiction of practically all political eras except its own, the 1980s, when Thatcher successfully carried out a radical program regardless of harrumphing senior civil servants. --David Stubbs

Comedy, thats clearly the product of Genius and further stregthened by a cast that could not be more perfect.

The politics in this applies just the same from New Delhi to Washington and Westminster in between, if you don't already have it, its time you got it, at any price its a bargain.

Yes Prime Minister 5 out of 5 stars.

This, along wit "Yes Minister" have long been my favorite British Comedy series. The play on words is phenomenal and the acting without equal. I was born and raised in the British Isles so find it especially satisfying to see such great work. What makes this series even funnier is the fact that it can, in many cases, be related to what goes on in the world today.

how funny 5 out of 5 stars.

I had forgotten how on the money and hilarious this series was, I now own both sets and can't over-reccomend this to any viewer

It tickles 5 out of 5 stars.

Three men sitting around and discussing politics. Sounds hilarious. The fact that it is hilarious is testament to a unique collection of talent, from the principal actors to the writers Jay and Lynn. I recommend a novice viewer start with Yes, Minister, but it is not absolutely necessary.

One of the brightest stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood, the lovely Loretta Young appeared in over 100 films during her movie career. Smart, Intelligent and Wildly Funny 5 out of 5 stars.

One of the greatest sitcoms of all time with profoundly funny, intelligent, satiric scripts and great acting by the three principal characters. I love Paul Eddington, one of the funniest actors I have ever seen.

Frank Scoblete: author Golden Touch Dice Control Revolution!

The best ever in British Politics 5 out of 5 stars.

Magnificent creation by Anothy Jay and Jonathan Lynn. I own both copies of Yes Minister and Yes, Prime Minister. As funny as it is, it shows the underlying humour in British politics.

One of the five best sitcoms in history 5 out of 5 stars.

A classic, the pinnicle of the craft. Pegs the droll meter. Part of the attraction for me is the knowing applause of the British audience. But one need not be British to appreciate the tortuous logic of governmental bureaucracy and the patently political machinations of elected officials. There's virtually no sex and only one catchphrase; it succeeds on sheer wit alone.

Stupendously good 5 out of 5 stars.

This is up there with the best TV comedy of all time. Fawlty Towers, Dads Army, Seinfeld, Black Adder, MASH and The Office - it merits comparison with all of these, its that good.

Paul Eddington is brilliant as Jim Hacker, the Minister of the title. A decent man who is destined to become Prime Minister, but who is greatly hindered by his Permanent Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby. Appleby, as played by Sir Nigel Hawthorne IS one of the greatest TV comedy characters ever created. A man with only one interest; protecting the Civil Service and its staff. He also ensures that if anything is done by the Minister it is done exactly as the Civil Service wish it to be done, regardless of cost and damage to the Government.

Apart from the casts brilliance and the marvellous scripts, the reason this show is so successful is that it is very close to the truth, as was admitted by the writers many years after the series finished. The writers met and got inside information on the running of British Government departments. So whilst there is some dramatic licence the essence of each episode probably has some basis in truth.

Derek Fowlds plays the lesser role of Bernard Woolley, a slightly innocent Private Secretary, but given some wonderful lines by writers Jay and Lynn. Bernards petty observations contrast wonderfully with the Machiavellian plotting going on between Hacker and Sir Humphrey.

I never tire of watching this, it really is endlessly funny.

Two absolutely wonderful movies 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

For a long time I thought Luis Buñuel was an arty, removed kind of director. Thanks to DVDs like the ones in this edition it slowly dawns on me that he was extremely prolific and was also adept at tackling different genres. Gran Casino is a kind of a melodrama with humor and songs - it reminded me of Hollywood movies of the 1930s. A lot of the action takes place in the night club cum casino. There is a very long take of a singer who descends the stage, making her way through the audience along the periphery of the room and back to the stage, all the time singing, while the camera performs a 360 degree turn - it's very neat. The main character is a singer from Argentina, she performs a few of the best known tangos accompanied by a moody but competent pianist. There even is a tiny surrealist element: one dance number is performed with the dancers clutching tiny electrical torches which are absolutely out of place and do not seem to belong to the period the movie is set in. With those torches they pick out members of the audience.
The Young Ones is a very beautifully filmed drama in English concerning the coming of age of a girl in a very removed place. The girl reminded me a little of the movie Nell. An African American who has to run from an enraged mob seems to be the first real contact with the outside world. He is a clarinetist, music is an important item of this movie. The way nature is depicted reminded me of movies by Jean Renoir, it's almost like a painting.
I spent a marvellous time with these two movies.
