I Took a Chance 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The X-Files movie Fight the Future is the only X-Files movie or TV series that is out of print on DVD. There will be a Blu-Ray Edition coming in December 2008 but for DVD fans who have just been catching up on the series they've been out of luck looking for a new copy. At least not from someone besides a third party vendor on Amazon or an eBay scalper at outrageous prices.

I lucked out finding this Movie three pack which contains Fight the Future along with Chain Reaction and Independence Day. The product description at Amazon lists that all three movies are in full-screen but they are actually all in widescreen (which is better). All three movies are packaged individually inside the box set with their own shrink-wrap including the otherwise out of print The X-Files. A LOT of multi-movie DVD packs either put all of the discs in one set or the individual movies in cheap-o slim-pack cases. The films in this set come in their own regular DVD packages which is what I was looking for.

This is the ONLY way to purchase Fight the Future new without going through a lot of hassle. The price is cheap too considering you also get two other movies.

The X-Files Movie box says the movie is in "Enhanced Widescreen" and it is. The product is exactly as described on the box but it doesn't come with the 8-page booklet which was packed into the original release. I'm fine with that since I was looking all over for a new copy of the movie for months until I found this.

Fun fact: The X-Files movie takes a rather vulgar dig at Independence Day (one of the other packed movies) in the scene where Mulder meets Martin Landau's character for the first time. I find it humorous that this is one of the movies the DVD comes with.

The set where the mythology truly comes to an end 4 out of 5 stars.
42 of 48 people found this review helpful.

I still have my complaints about this odd series of DVD sets from Fox. The basic idea isn't a bad one under the right circumstances: take all of the mythology episodes from THE X-FILES and group them in four inexpensive sets that leave out the stand alone episodes in order to tell "the X-Files story." I'm still not quite sure who the target audience for these sets is. Neophytes will be missing the standalone episodes that are just as typical of the series as the mythology episodes (and that represent many of the finest episodes), and serious fans already have all these episodes. To sum up, here are my complaints:

1. Instead of providing some inexpensive Mythology sets, FOX Entertainment should instead have focused on cutting the exorbitant prices of the complete season sets. They should provide us with sets that list around $59.95, so that places like Amazon can sell them at initial offerings of $38.

2. The sets come with minimal extras, largely recycling the special features from the original boxed DVD sets.

3. While the Mythology sets serve a function by calling attention to the seasons-long story arc, they hurt by eliminating the standalone episodes, which are just as crucial to developing the Mulder-Scully chemistry as the Mythology episodes.

4. In the end, the sets feel like an attempt to milk X-FILE fans who are anxious for new material while waiting and hoping for a new feature length film.

Nonetheless, I can support the idea of these sets for two reasons. First, they do help focus attention on the alien colonization story arc that runs through the various seasons of THE X-FILES. Second, they are very cheap.

Unfortunately, after this third set, things go downhill pretty quickly. I absolutely love THE X-FILES, and even loved Season Eight after Duchovny largely left the show, and much of Season Nine after he was gone entirely (though his memory lingered on). But the fourth set will be dedicated to the Super Soldiers story arc, and that was the one truly awful thing that ever occurred in THE X-FILES. The story arc that ended with the destruction of the cooperative efforts with the aliens striving to colonize earth left the show without much structure in Season Seven, so I can understand the desire to reintroduce structure with a new story arc. Unfortunately, the Super Soldiers simply didn't work, partly because they were a little too powerful (though they did find a kind of kryptonite that worked against them), and partly because the show was running out of gas when they were introduced, and no one seemed to want to try and make them interesting. Once the main arc that dominated the show from the first season until the very beginning of Season Seven came to an end, the show largely drifted from one standalone episode to another. Some familiar characters reappeared from time to time, like the Cigarette Smoking Man, and we got some alien episodes, but for all intents and purposes the main arc came to an end in "Amor Fati" in Season Seven. Everything after that has a tacked on feeling to it.

The importance of THE X-FILES in popularizing very long story arcs simply cannot be overstated. I've argued in several places that one reason that the ceiling for what television is capable of doing has been raised so high has resulted from the successive contributions of TWIN PEAKS, THE X-FILES, and BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, the first by showing that television was capable of telling riveting narratives, the second by exciting us with multi-season story arcs, and the third by keeping the multi-season story arcs, but shifting the main concern from plot to character development. The first three (but not the fourth) of the Mythology sets help make the case for this important contribution THE X-FILES has made to the history of television.

In COLONIZATION Mulder's search for the truth suddenly seems near its end when he and Scully meet Cassandra Spender. A multiple abductee, Cassandra believes that aliens came to Earth on a mission that has somehow gone terribly wrong. Her theory is confirmed when Krycek reveals that three abduction sites were beacons for alien colonization and the death and destruction at those sites were caused by a small alien rebel force. Determined to prevent the colonization of Earth, this force is also eliminating all proof that an alien presence was ever on the planet. Unfortunately for Mulder, his quest for the truth has made him part of the proof which must be eliminated.

Editorial Review:

In the first season of The X-Files, creator Chris Carter was uncertain of the series' future, so each of the episodes is a self-contained suspense story; they do not delve deep into the ongoing X-Files mythology or turn to self-parody and humor as do episodes in later seasons. Yet, these episodes display the elements for which the show would become famous: the cinematic production values and top-notch special effects, the stark lighting of the Vancouver sets, the atmospheric halo of Mark Snow's score, and the clever plots dealing with subjects ranging from the occult, religion, and monsters to urban legends, conspiracy theories, and science fiction. Most importantly, season 1 introduces FBI agents Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Fox "Spooky" Mulder (David Duchovny), two of the most attractive government officials around. Scully is the serious-minded medical scientist assigned to join Mulder on the X-Files, a division of the FBI dealing with the paranormal. Mulder is the intuitive thinker with a dry wit, a passionate believer in the existence of paranormal phenomena and one of the few characters on television smart enough to figure out who the bad guy is before the audience does. Their muddled relationship, a deep friendship laced with sexual tension, provides the human heart in a world where the bizarre and horrible lurk in everyday society.

The materials on the bonus disc provide some interesting trivia and background, but it is the 24 episodes themselves that make this seven-disc boxed set a true find. Those unfamiliar with The X-Files often view all the fuss with the same skepticism with which Scully first regards her new partner's ideas. But just as she comes to realize the uncanny accuracy of Mulder's outlandish theories, newcomers to The X-Files who sample a few episodes in this boxed set will likely find themselves riveted to their television late into the night. And undoubtedly, the shadows and creaking noises in the house that evening will seem more menacing than usual. --Eugene Wei

inevitable repackaging of the brilliant television series 4 out of 5 stars.
14 of 16 people found this review helpful.

This repackaging of THE X FILES (1993-2002) according to the mythology arc has, no doubt, long been expected by most diehard fans of the now legendary television series. Having received the 4 volumes as a Christmas gift, this grateful recipient has not had time to peruse all 60 episodes + extras; however, a few observations do come to mind.

RE: THE X FILE MYTHOLOGY, VOL 1-4 ("Abduction"; "Black Oil"; "Colonization"; "Super Soldiers"):

Recommendations, divided into 4 categories of prospective buyers, are as follows:

1) FANATICS/COLLECTORS:

True fanatics or obsessive collectors will, irrespective of whether they own all 9 complete seasons, want to add these 4 volumes to their shelves. That there exists only a small amount of new material ( in terms of extras: audio commentary + documentary ) is really irrelevant to those who fall into this category. 5 STARS in terms of its appeal for this group of people.

2) "REGULAR" FANS:

"X-Philes" who exist on a lesser ( if saner ) plane of dedication may want to consider whether, possessing some ( if not, perhaps, all ) of the complete DVD sets, these repackaged sets actually add to their enjoyment. It seems indisputable that THE X FILES will never be understood on an aesthetic level by solely watching the myth arc episodes; therefore, it begs the question of why one would purchase the "complete" myth arc when it's possible to go the way the series did when it originally aired- i.e., by alternating between mythology and stand alone episodes. 2 STARS in terms of its appeal for this group of people.

3) CONFUSED BUT INTERESTED VIEWERS:

People with some familiarity with the show but who never quite watched with enough regularity ( or intensity ) to follow the intricacies of the mythology arc, may well consider purchasing these volumes. Presumably, those who fall ( more or less ) into this category will not have purchased the complete DVD seasons ( or at least not *all* of them ). It may well be financially (1/5 cost of 9 complete seasons) and aesthetically satisfying to purchase these 4 repackaged volumes and supplement ( by renting or borrowing ) selected stand alone ( "monster of the week" ) episodes. 4 STARS in terms of its appeal for this group of people.

4) NOVICES

For those who truly haven't watched THE X FILES, or at most, a few episodes, it seems a toss-up as to whether these sets are the right way to go. It is this reviewers suggestion that those in this category rent some episodes; specifically, the first 4 episodes of SEASON ONE in order to establish whether they find the show appealing. If they're hooked, and have the willingness to invest money through purchasing DVD's outright, it might be better to start purchasing all nine complete seasons over time ( most definitely *in order* ). The other option for beginners would be to purchase the 4 repackaged myth arc volumes ( again, paying attention to proper order ) and renting select stand alone episodes ( there are numerous books and websites which can guide one to the very best episodes ). 3 STARS in terms of its appeal for this group of people.

NOTE: The X FILES MOVIE ( "Fight the Future" ) is *not* included in this repackaging release. After viewing the first 3 episodes of Vol 3: "Colonization" (Patient X, The Red and the Black, The End), it is extremely advisable, for the sake of continuity and understanding, to buy ( or at least, watch ) the film *before* continuing with the remaining (Vol 3) episodes.

RE: THE X FILES MYTHOLOGY, VOL 4: "Super Soldiers":

The 14 episodes selected for inclusion in Vol 4, spanning Seasons 8 & 9, are representative of a unique period (David Duchovny's partial participation and consequent introduction of new characters). An unprecedented percentage (nearly half) of the episodes from Season 8 were devoted to the mythology arc; as a result, of all the volumes in the repackaging scheme, Volume 4 has the most claim to an artistic "raison d'etre". With composer Mark Snow's haunting "Scully theme" functioning as idée fixe, the mythology arc conveys a dramatic intensity ("Per Manum"/"This is Not Happening"/"DeadAlive"/"Three Words"/"Vienen" ) reminiscent of the THE X FILES dark Season 4. "Essence"/"Existence" reveals much of the series' philosophical (indeed, theological) underpinnings, scripts fashioned in such a way as to provide a satisfactory conclusion to both the 8th season and the series as a whole, should it have ended in 2001. As it turned out, many of its themes would be carried over into what would in actuality become the final year. The symbiotic partnership between Chris Carter & Frank Spotnitz continued with their co-writing of episodes airing in Season 9. The ambitious "Nothing Important Happened Today (I/II)" fuses the familiar "alien hybrid" concept with the newer element of "Supersoldiers". The Orwellian atmosphere of "Trust No1" is a compellingly well-framed continuation of the myth arc as well as a dark commentary on certain governmental strictures enacted in the wake of 9/11. An extraordinary degree of Christian symbolism pervades "Provenance" & "Providence" while "William" is taut, dramatic episode creatively directed (& co-written) by Duchovny- the clever double twist ending has dramatic ramifications that extend backward and forward in time (Gillian Anderson putting forth a customarily moving performance). The series finale ("The Truth") penned by Carter exudes a special glow, starting out ("in media res") with Mulder's return, lagging a bit during the court-room trial scenes and ending with a fireworks flourish which pulls out all the stops. The final scene of THE X FILES is a quiet coda; a truly beautiful moment between Mulder and Scully as they share their mutual belief that, in spite of all appearances, hope is not lost and that "the light shines in the darkness".

Editorial Review:

The Mythology is Chris Carter's visionary story arc of "The X-Files" comprised of 60 episodes from all nine seasons of the show. Now you can follow every government conspiracy, alien abduction, and hidden truth right from the beginning…

Great 3 Episodes but you Save Money by Buying the First Season 1 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I love these three epsidoes which introduced Xena and they are essentail if you are a Hercules or Xena fan. If you want to buy them though I would suggest buying the complete first season of Hercules. You get five full tv movies, these three episodes, and ten more episodes for fifteen dollars. You save eight dollars and you get so much more.

good episodes, overpriced 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

These 3 episodes of Hercules the Legendary journeys are available here for one price, but are also available as part of Hercules Season One for a lower price, (plus you get the rest of the season) and you can see the episodes in context. Also Herc season 1 contains 5 tv movies, 3 of which are really quite good. (the 1st is a bit weak and the 5th is a re-hash of the other four) Movie 1 has Lucy Lawless in a non-xena bit part, and Movie 2 has Renee O'Connor in a featured role. So if you get that set you'll get everything you get here, plus a lot more stuff, and it is A LOT CHEAPER.

Good Season, No Missing Episodes 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My review is simple. I just received my copy of this season and "Anasazi" the episode that many claim is missing, is included on Disc 6 and plays without difficulty. For any non-fans out there, I will put in my two cents and say that The X-Files is a good show and as most of the reviews below state, this is a pretty good season. If you're looking for great science-fiction, here it is, just make sure to start with the first season (as if that wasn't obvious anyway).

Missing Episode 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I've read here that only Amazon.com sold or still sells the season with the last episode missing, I just want to let people know that I bought this season at Best Buy a couple months ago and the season finale is missing. I was very frustrated. I am going to take it back next week and exchange it. I am going to have them put the new 6th disc in a dvd player to make sure it contains the final episode. Great season, though!

What a terrible ending! 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have been and still am a loyal fan of Xena and Gabrielle. Let me remind those who liked the ending of something. Real Life is full of saddness, misery, loss and tragedy. We watch TV and movies to escape reality. Xena was a tragic figure in the beginning of her life. She killed for little or no reason. But she saw that she was wrong. She changed her ways and fought for justice. There is no way to bring those killed back to life. But Xena repented and devoted her life to fight for good. She risked her life many times in order to save the lives of countless others. (Let those without sin throw the first stone) We need a heroine like Xena. We want to see that those in the "white hats" win and the bad guys in the "black hats" lose. I know that reality does not work out that way many times. But Xena was different. She is special. I think it is most digusting, very tragic and pathetic that Xena had to die. And if dying wasn't enough, beheading her made my stomach turn. I own the entire series. But I will never, ever watch the last episode again.
I gave this two stars because Xena's tragic and unnecessary death puts a blemish on the whole series.

Out With The Old, In With The New 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Starting with the sweeping landscape shot of Los Angeles, the show's new home after filming five seasons in Vancouver, Canada, The Sixth Season of the X-Files epitomized the concept of change in nearly every aspect. Coming on the heels of "Fight The Future: The X-Files Movie", which did not provide the kind of closure that was expected, the writers/producers knew that serious changes to the show needed to be made, as the mythology plotlines were beginning to bog down due to overly-complex storylines. This need for change even spilled into the stand-alone episodes, developing the Mulder-Scully romance more than at any other time up to this point.

In regards to the mythology episodes, the season starts with the aptly-titled "The Beginning", in which the "new mythology" plotline is begun, centering on the notion that perhaps mankind is itself extraterrestrial in origin. After a two-part episode ("Two Fathers" and "One Son") that wraps up the original Syndicate mythology by explaining the ultimate fate of the alien-human hybrid program, the finale ("Biogenesis") again returns to the "humans as aliens" plot, where Agent Scully makes the greatest scientific discovery in human history on the African coast.

Also during this season, the stand-alone episodes were of excellent quality (in my opinion, the best the show ever produced). Focusing on the Mulder-Scully relationship, as well as adding larger doses of humor to each episode, the stand-alones that really shine are "How The Ghosts Stole Christmas" (a merry romp through a haunted house), "Triangle" (a fantastic nod to the Wizard of Oz), "The Unnatural" (Mulder's love of the National Pastime is explored), and "Field Trip" (one of the best episodes, concept-wise, of the entire show). Also, "Dreamland 1 & 2" is a unique episodes that showcases the humor, fantastical plots, and relationships of the show all at once!

To conclude, I have always considered the Sixth Season of the X-Files to be my favorite single season of the nine. Viewers are given resolution to the main mythology, taken down a new mythological path, treated to some of the best single-hour plots of the show's history, and rewarded by the flowering of a subtle Mulder-Scully romantic relationship.

Heartbreaking, cowardly, traitorous, and completely myopic.... 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Season 9 of The X-Files is nothing short of heartbreaking, cowardly, traitorous, and completely myopic in my opinion, and I'm quite sure in the opinions of many others who were loyal fans of this series for 9 long years. In an attempt to make an extra buck, Chris Carter and his corporate goonba accomplices sacrificed content and continuity for series longevity, and in the end succeeded in tarnishing a one-of-a-kind program.

I would love to know what kind of rationale was in play when those in charge decided to kill off some of the most important characters, thereby severing story lines, plots, and important character interdependencies that had been cultivated from the beginning. The Lone Gunmen, C.G.B. Spender (Cigarette Smoking Man), Krycek, and The Syndicate (to name a few) formed an impossible-to-replace group of characters, and I lost all respect for the show when these characters were eliminated and nothing of substance was created to take their place.

Carter should have called it quits when Duchovny left, but no. What we have instead are two additional seasons that are total monstrosities and an insult to viewers who placed emotional stock in this show and its characters. Carter obviously had zero loyalty to the program's fans, otherwise he would never have made such a callous decision to ruin this show's legacy by tampering so radically with the storyline. What was left after the deed was done? Absolutely nothing.

The series finale was perhaps the biggest disappointment in programming history. From the very first episode, the series revolved around an extraterrestrial storyline, and what did we get at the end and in return for all of our years of loyal viewing? We get Mulder and Scully sitting in a hotel room, reminiscing about old times, not knowing where to go or what to do next. And to top it all off, Carter always promised he would never entangle Mulder and Scully in any type of sexual intrigue, and what did he do during the last two seasons? You guessed it.

It's been a long time since this series went off the air, but the greed and selfishness surrounding the production of the last two seasons, and in particular the last season, still resonates because this series did mean alot to so many people, myself included. Chris Carter is set for life, but he has lost my respect. He and his retinue's opportunism makes me sick....
