Will & Grace - Season Three 5 out of 5 stars.

This is one of a few TV shows I liked enough to get on DVD. Really not much to say about this Set. Only thing is that if you like the idea of gay guys living with straight lady's then this is a fun TV Series. Will Trueman is one of the main characters, gay and a lawyer. There are a few lawyer jokes in the Series. but for me it is a plus since I was screwed by a lawyer. I have made note to some of these jokes.

Thought the DVD was missing episodes 5 out of 5 stars.

I love Will & Grace but when looking at Season 3 I realized that there were so few episodes. However, when I looked at the listing on the box, I realized that I hadn't seen half of the shows listed.

Thanks to the previous reviewer, I was able to navigate the an obscure place on each disc to view all of the episodes that I had missed.

Very poor Menu graphics!

Season One
With its fantastic comedy series Weeds, cable network Showtime finally gave up its also-ran status to HBO and found itself with a controversial, buzz-worthy show that was as hilarious as it was dark, one about a truly desperate housewife. A recent widow with two growing sons, Nancy Botwin (Golden Globe winner Mary-Louise Parker) looks like a typical resident of the affluent Southern California suburb of Agrestic. She keeps a clean, upscale house (with the help of a live-in maid), attends PTA meetings, goes to her kids' soccer games, makes frequent stops at the local coffee franchise.... and sells marijuana in order to make it all possible. Left with no way to support herself after her beloved husband's fatal heart attack, Nancy turns herself into the "suburban baroness of bud," dealing to her neighbors in the area, with the help of her supplier Heylia (Tonye Patano) and point man Conrad (Romany Malco). Nancy's clients run from the local councilman (Kevin Nealon) to the just-barely-legal students at the local community college, but many in Agrestic are still in the dark as to how she keeps her family afloat, including her best friend, the sardonic Celia (Elizabeth Perkins), a wife and mother whose blistering, withering put-downs could make Dorothy Parker cringe in fear. But like many small-business owners, Nancy yearns for more success and cash, and like her workaholic neighbors, finds keeping a balance between work life and home life to be extremely precarious at best.

While Desperate Housewives yearned to be a suburban satire with bite, Weeds was the real deal, skewering upper-middle class mores with a sharp eye, a keen wit, and a mostly forgiving heart. In episode after episode, the show's creative team (led by creator Jenji Kohan) pulled back the layers of Agrestic's superficiality to show what lies beneath the squeaky-clean exteriors and smiling faces; it turns out that hunger, fear, desire, and, yes, desperation aren't that far down. However, Weeds forsakes pulpiness and florid drama for biting yet affectionate humor--its heroine is a woman with sliding morals, but one you'll root for to the very end. The effervescent Parker, the only actress who can mix perkiness with morbidity in just the right amounts, anchored the show with her amazing turn as Nancy, who by the end of the first season had become a kind of soccer-mom version of Michael Corleone, entering a corrupt world with both trepidation and fascination--and totally enamored of the power it brought her. Also perfectly cast, Perkins found the role of a lifetime as the bitterly hilarious Celia, and entering the show in its fourth episode, Justin Kirk (Parker's co-star in Angels in America) proved to be a potent secret weapon as Nancy's brother-in-law Andy, a slacker who wasn't above peddling t-shirts to elementary school kids. As icky as these characters might appear on the surface, Weeds made them all immensely appealing and great company to be around. Don't say we didn't warn you: one hit and you'll be hooked on this show. The DVDs feature six episode commentaries with cast and crew, outtakes, original featurettes, a music video, and most enjoyably, Agrestic Herbal Recipes (for entertainment value only, we assume) and the "Smoke and Mirrors" marijuana mockumentary. --Mark Englehart

Season Two
The first season of Weeds ended with a shocker: Nancy (Mary-Louise Parker) found a dreamy new boyfriend, but he turned out to be a DEA agent (Martin Donovan). Luckily, she manages to find some pretty creative ways to "deal" with it. Despite that new obstacle, she decides it’s also time to "grow" the business to higher levels, and all these risky moves lead up to another fabulous season finale cliff-hanger. Elsewhere in suburban utopia, comic relieving brother-in-law Andy (Justin Kirk) tries to dodge his army commitments by joining Rabbi school, while the hilarious Doug (Kevin Nealon) battles it out with Celia (Elizabeth Perkins) to maintain power over the Agrestic City Council. Plot aside, Season 2 of Weeds took this potentially great show to the next level. No matter how hard they tried in the first season, the show’s makers had a heck of a time trying to shake the impression that they were mimicking the edginess of HBO’s original programming. (Some might have gone as far as to say they were trying a little too hard.) This time around, the characters and the story have grown into their own skins, and they offer something much more authentic and convincing. The second season also starts a great new tradition: Malvina Reynolds ‘s "Little Boxes" is still the opening theme song, but it is performed by a different artist for each episode (from Elvis Costello to The Shins). Just one more thing to keep us "addicted." --Jordan Thompson

Growing up and branching out 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Season 3 finds John-Boy a freshman at Boatwright University, realizing his longtime dream of attending college and becoming a writer. Of course, it isn't easy -- unable to afford the cost of living there, he must commute the 28 miles each day. That's the least of John-Boy's problems, however, as he struggles to fit in amongst rich classmates who never thought twice about whether college would be in their future.

Back on the mountain, the other Waltons are also growing up and branching out into the larger world. Mary Ellen, who has just begun pinning her hair up each day, attends her first college dance with one of John-Boy's friends. Jim-Bob, sick of being ignored by the elders, learns that running away from home isn't the answer, either. Having nursed a lifelong interest in art, Olivia finally musters the courage to sign up for a free adult education course...necessitating that she learn to drive!

Character development isn't limited to the Waltons, either -- store owner Ike, single for so long, finally meets a woman with whom he immediately falls in love.

Despite this being its third season, the warm supportiveness, tinged with humor, of the Walton clan remains as strong as ever in this DVD set.

Editorial Review:

Through another hard year of the Depression, Season 3 entails the Walton family's discovery that the true richness in life comes from the joy they bring each other, while fans also relive John-Boy's first year at college.

Wonderful Wonderfalls 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I just recently discovered "Pushing Daisies" which, of course, lead to the discovery of "Wonderfalls." I just finished watching the DVD set, and I am just heartsick that the show is not only gone, but it's been gone for a while. SIgh. On the positive side, that last show was a good one - you could even pretend that it tied up a few loose strings. You could also pretend it was a mini-series with a happy ending. Does that work? Sort of, but not really. Oh, well, I'll look forward to the "Pushing Daisies/Wonderfalls" crossover in a few weeks. And maybe I can find an orange Mold-o-rama lion somewhere.

Editorial Review:

"From the producer of Angel and Firefly comes Wonderfalls with 9 never aired episodes. Although a recent graduate of Brown University, Jaye Tyler decides to ignore her degree, live in a trailer and work at a tourist gift shop in Niagara Falls called Wonderfalls—-much to the despair of her well-to-do family. But Jaye’s aimless life takes a startling turn after a lion figurine begins talking to her. Her family calls it an "episode," but Jaye knows better.

Fearing for her sanity, Jaye nevertheless starts doing exactly what an increasing number of inanimate objects tell her to do and is amazed when her outrageous actions begin changing people’s lives in unexpected ways. "

The Walton's 2nd Season DVD was overall very good, with the exception of a few episodes that the color was lighter and more pale and was not as good as the 3rd Season which I purchased out of a store.

Wonderful series - enjoy it as much now with my own kids as I did when it was first aired. Especially interesting to listen to my kid's reactions to the things the Waltons had to give up or do without. A good series to watch again during our own troubling economic times.

Simply the most uplifting TV series ever 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was a fan of the Waltons twenty-five years ago, but now that I'm older (and maybe wiser) I see what the series really has to offer - a precious look into a life style now almost forgotten. The show gives us a look into a simple, loving way of life we can all choose to create even in this complex 21st Century, if, of course, we see the value of it. My grandsons will be watching the series with me in the years ahead and we'll be talking about the depth and beauty of the relationships so genuinely portrayed there. I can hardly wait. In the mean time, my wife and I treat ourselves to an episode every few days.

Editorial Review:

It's 1936: Hitler and Mussolini threaten the world, King Edward gives up the English throne for love, Gangbusters is on the radio, a movie crew hires John-Boy as a scriptwriter, Mary Ellen applies to nursing school, Jim-Bob discovers a shocking fact about his birth and a fire drives the Waltons from their home. Events large and small, far off and near touch the lives of all 11 Waltons, from Grandpa down to little Elizabeth. They bring tests, tears and triumphs...and bring the closely knit Waltons even closer together.

The Waltons Sixth Season is More Family-Centered Drama 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Back in the seventies when I watched the Waltons on TV (CBS, Thursday nights at 7 PM), I thought that when John-Boy left the show, the series would "die", or at least diminish, as the series is told from John-Boy's point of view. Boy, was I ever wrong! Season 6 is chock-full of dramatic episodes that are every bit as good as the five seasons that preceeded it.

Jason is now the oldest brother in the Walton family, and he accounts himself well in the many episodes in which he plays a major role. "The Recluse" is an excellent episode where Jason draws out a reclusive woman from her self-imposed isolation. "The Warrior" follows this episode and is another great hour of entertainment. The Walton family is challenged by two Native American Indians who claim the Walton barn lies over sacred Indial burial grounds. The Indians try to burn down the barn. The Waltons resolve their dispute in an honorable fashion. "The Volunteer" is actually the first part of a two-part episode involving the relationship between G.W. and Erin. Erin rejects G.W.'s proposal of marriage, and joins the army. In a later episode, G.W. dies in a training accident and Erin has to deal with her guilt over rejecting G.W. Erin and GW both show they can act in these two episodes. I always thought the acting of G.W. was sort of "wooden", but he pulls off these two episodes with a maturity not seen in previous seasons.

Mary Ellen and Curt give the Waltons their first grandchild, a son in a two-part episode in mid-season. "The Milestone" gives Momma Walton a chance to show how very well she can act. She goes through her change of life in this episode. It is tastefully done as usual. "The Anniversary" shows the 25th wedding anniversary of John and Olivia Walton; it is a very special edition and shows the deep love they have for each other. Meanwhile, cracks appear in the marriage of Mary Ellen and Curt, as Curt is apart in the Army.

The season ends with a terrific combination of episodes. The first is "The Ordeal", another two-parter where Elizabeth is injured and Jim-Bob and Ben have to deal with their own guilt over her accident. This one is a real tear-jerker, especially at the end where Elizabeth takes her first halting steps after her accident. John-Boy returns in yet another two-part episode involving a disaster at a reopenned coal mine. The next to the last episode is another classic John-Boy episode, where he proposes marriage to his long-term girlfriend Daisy, but is in for a sudden revelation about her past. Finally, the season ends with the return of Grandma Esther Walton. (Actress Ellen Corby had suffered a stroke in real life, and had been away from the show since early in Season Five). This is another tear-jerker, and shows the courage of Ellen Corby in returning to the series, as she never fully recovered her voice as a result of the stroke. I have to applaud the producers of the Waltons for bringing back Grandma Walton despite her obvious disability. Many shows would have written her off, but not the Waltons. They deal with real-life drama and situations, and their love for each other and committment to family is what makes this show so endearing to all who love the series. I am sure every family today watching the Waltons wishes that their own family could have the love for each other that binds the Waltons together.

If you don't have this season, purchase it. It is well worth the investment. The entire family can enjoy the episodes. There is nothing like The Waltons on tv today, much to our great loss.

Jim "Konedog" Koening

Editorial Review:

It's a big year for welcomes on Walton's Mountain. Welcome back to John- Boy, visiting from New York, and to Grandma, finally home from the hospital. And welcome to the family for Mary Ellen and Curt's baby boy John Curtis. But all that joy is set against the tragedy of events in the outside world. As the fall of 1939 turns into the spring of 1940, war rages in Europe...and the Waltons are soon caught in its chilling grasp. Curt is called up for duty. Soldiers train on Walton property. The first local enlistee dies. British children flee the Blitz for the safety of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Depression is ending...but even tougher times lie ahead.
