Intimate and beautiful performance 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

It's a little short but as wonderful as every single performance she's ever made. The special thing about it is that it's like an unplugged. It's the concert and no extra stuff. If you are a fan, you must have it!

Insight Into Sarah 5 out of 5 stars.

Watching this DVD is like watching Sarah McLachlan perform in your living room. She is an excellent performer with a beautiful voice and presence. Liking her songs and then listening to the stories behind the songs gave me so much more appreciation for her.

Editorial Review:

More than just the mind behind Lilith Fair, Sarah McLachlan is the lush voice from some of the most beautiful and haunting melodies in recent memory. The Canadian songstress broke out in 1993 wit her third album, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy, inspired by her experience working on a documentary about poverty and child prostitution. Then came Mirrorball, which gave rise to enchanting songs like "Building a Mystery" and "I Will Remember You." And we"ve got them right here in rock's most intimate setting, so sit back, relax, and get ready to go one-on-one with the artists you love " and the songs you only thought you knew. Includes Good Enough, Building a Mystery, Ice Cream, Sweet Surrender, Hold On, Elsewhere, Possession, Witness, Angel

Bell can not act. 1 out of 5 stars.

She is eye candy. She can not act nor even say one live of smart dialoge. This show was only for young geeks to drool over and I am glad it got cancelled.

Awesome show cut too short 5 out of 5 stars.

If I didn't already have these DVDs, I would purchase them today. Veronica Mars was an excellent show with great writing. Their one liners were great. The mysteries were always interesting and the characters were fantastic. You will truly empathize with many of these people. Veronica's like Nancy Drew with a lot more spunk. You will love this series!

The greatest most poorly advertised show 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

When it was airing, Veronica Mars was always advertised as a teen drama. It stars a "teen" (Kristen Bell looks reasonably young, but she is seven years older then her character) and there is drama, but it is a dramedy. I like to compare it to the two shows in which it competed with in its time slot; House, and Gilmore Girls. Veronica has the wit and cynicism of House, but is a girl like the Gilmore Girls. She is a strong female character, but is strong in a very feminine way which is refreshing. Overall, this show was brilliant.

EXCELLENT SERIES! GLAD TO HAVE THIS ON DVD! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

With so few newer shows out there that I enjoy, it's nice to be able to go back in time when TV shows were...well.......really good! This is a fine example of TV in it's prime. Well written stories, great acting and FX, drive these Sci-Fi adventures. I have read that there are some glitches with some of the disc. I have had no problems....yet! I will add information if I do find any problems. Until then..... prepare to dive!

In glorious black and white 5 out of 5 stars.

Combine Sea Hunt, James Bond, and Star Trek and you might get something like this show. In 1964, the brave new worlds weren't out there in space, but deep beneath the sea. David Hedison is fantastic as Captain Crane, and if the science is now and then a bit sketchy, the Navy part rings true. Absolutely tuned to the pulse of the viewing audience, Irwin Allen ushered in non-stop adventure. Great dialogue also made this a not to be missed hour. Even if you don't think the show was a five, the set is. Three cases hold three double sided discs in a slip case. If the price seems low, it's because each season is broken into two sets. The menu for these dangerous waters is easily navigable. "Fox knows TV DVDs" claims their PR, and it's true. Instead of beseiging the viewer with ads and trailers, they merely include tasteful printed leaflets showcasing their line-up.

The extras include the "never-before seen pilot episode", but that's really the first episode, "Eleven Days to Zero", only it's in color (the rest of the episodes in season one are in black and white). Besides the sixteen episodes in this Season One Volume One set, there's a promotional reel, stills, and a "home movie" from Irwin Allen. It's interesting to compare the color pilot with the 1961 color feature film of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, which had an entirely different cast including Walter Pidgeon and Barbara Eden. That stunningly beautiful SF film is also now widely available. The show is also notable for its underwater scenes, and a chance to see AMF/ Voit diving gear circa mid' 'sixties. Over its four year run the series also spun off numerous games and toys. Journey back to '64 with the crew of the Seaview.

Editorial Review:

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea was the brainchild of Writer/Producer/Director Irwin Allen... the "Master of Disaster."It ran on ABC 1964-1968 and was for its four years of some of the best and most exciting science fiction on TV at the time. The classic adventures aboard the "SSRN Seaview" will captivate you today, as much as they did in the 60s.

'S'more than just the "monster-of-the-week" 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Irwin Allen's sci-fi classic has received its share of both praise and condemnation. While the show showcased impressive 60's special effects, along with the stellar performances of stars Richard Basehart ("Admiral Nelson") and David Hedison (Captain Crane), it was often criticized for its over-the-top monsters and occasionally absurd situations.

However, when viewed as a reflection of its time, the show carefully blended all its elements into an entertaining and adventurous hour. The thirteen episodes on this compilation feature some of the series' strongest episodes, along with a couple that fall flat. But, even those that aren't up to par are still fascinating enough to hold the viewer's interest and can be overlooked for their scientific and/or logical "liberties."

The episodes appear in their correct airing order, and, with that arrangement, viewers can take a nostalgic trip back in time to days of less "politically correct" and more innocent times.

This reviewer feels that the show's third season should have started with "The Day the World Ended," a taut and thrilling episode featuring former child actor Skip Homeier as a U.S. Senator that's not all he's cracked up to be. Unfortunately, the season began with "Monster from the Inferno," a not-so-bad installment about an alien entity (voiced by "Lost in Space's" Dick Trufeld) that attempts to take over the Seaview with the aide of scientist Arthur Hill.

"Death Watch" is basically a three-man piece showcasing the two principal characters, along with Chief Sharkey (Terry Becker).

"The Thing from Inner Space," though not that good, does give significant screen time to cast member Paul Trinka as "Crewman Patterson." Perennial fan favorite Del Monroe ("Kowalski") continues to play a significant role on the show and gets highlighted on "Deadly Waters," with Don Gordon featured as his brother.

Richard Bull continues in his role as the unnamed but much-needed "Doc."

Even radio operator "Sparks" (Arch Whiting) has more than five lines in a given installment.

Upon back-to-back viewing, one discovers that crewman "Ron" (Ron Stein) was an early version of "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's" Morn; that is, a character that is voiceless but appears frequently in the background.

"Ron" even gets addressed in one installment!

"The Lost Bomb" is a throwback to the first season in that it deals with an undersea conflict with an enemy submarine intent on capturing a submerged bomb.

Basehart gets to assay two roles in the entertaining "The Haunted Submarine" while "The Terrible Toys" features veteran Paul Fix as a sailor with a malevolent cargo.

The infamous and often-lambasted "The Plant Man" starts strong but loses steam when the plant mutates into plant "men" walking the corridors of the Seaview.

But it is still better than the remaining two.

Henry Jones, who would later appear as "Mr. Pem" in two installments, guests on the lackluster "Night of Terror" while Charles Aidman bears his fangs in "Werewolf," two of the weakest in the show's entire four-year run.

Rounding out the set are interviews with David Hedison, still galleries, and a FULL issue of the now-defunct Gold Key comic version of the show.

Memories abound as baby boomers and future fans can take another "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea."

Editorial Review:

Join the crew of the Seaview aboard their super high-tech submarine, where no mission is too dangerous and no threat is too deadly, be it enemy agents, mad scientists, deadly sea creatures, or impending nuclear disaster.

Editorial Review:

If you'd rather hear Bruce Springsteen talk than sing or play, then this edition of VH-1 Storytellers is for you. That's not just faint praise. While it's obviously his music that has made his marathon concerts legendary, Springsteen is also a gifted raconteur; "storyteller" applies to no one if not to him. That's the case here, as he is effortlessly funny and wise, humble and self-deprecating, yet still the ineffably iconic Boss. Drawing from the full breadth of his immense catalogue, from early faves like "Blinded by the Light" (referring to Manfred Mann's hit version, he muses about how the British group managed to turn "deuce" into "douche") and "Thunder Road" to several tunes from his 2005 album Devils & Dust, Springsteen dissects his songs line by line, explaining how the music fuels, informs, and complements the lyrics. The insights are often fascinating, as is the reminder that he has always had the knack for taking any subject, be it personal or political, and expressing it in the simple poetry of the common man. Nevertheless, it's worth noting that he performs just eight songs, including two on piano, and that the actual music occupies less than forty minutes of this more than two hour show (counting the Q & A session with the fans). So if it's Bruce's music that you want, check out one of his several excellent concerts or video collections. Heck, the man himself seems to recognize that talking about his songs is somehow superfluous when, after going into great detail about the meaning of and motivation behind the Devils & Dust title song, he says, "How much of this was I thinking about when I wrote the song? None of it. How much of it was I feeling? All of it." --Sam Graham

One of Irwin Allens Best 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

What's really amazing about this old favorite is how the stars David Hedison and the great Richard Basehart could keep a straight face while they delivered their lines from the often absurd scripts. It's good to enjoy it once again. The episodes are presented, for the most part exactly as they were first shown, and the video transfer is first rate.

Ready for another voyage to the bottom of the sea part 2 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This season was filmed in colour and was very very good and with the introduction of the colour it gave it more deph and made things look more scary and they even did a better job in hiding the strings on objects that need string to float. The only problem I have with these and Land Of the Giants are the double sided business and putting four on one side and two on the second side. The problem is that you could accidently either scratch or smudge on the disc and it could be ruined. So please Fox just pit them on single sided discs

So again if you like Irwin Allen then get it

Some of the best episodes in the history of the series 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Season two of "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" saw the beginning of the "monster of the week" storytelling that would mar much of the show's last two seasons. Though installments like "The Sky's on Fire" and "The Shape of Doom" have plots similar to the theatrical film and a first season show, respectively, there is enough originality in the remaining ten to satisfy fan and non-fan alike.

"Terror on Dinosaur Island," replete with footage taken from creator Irwin Allen's feature film "The Lost World," benefits from guest star Paul Carr's performance as a crewman obsessed with seeking revenge against Captain Crane who Carr feels is responsible for the death of a fellow sailor. Michael Ansara and John Wayne's son Patrick are both featured in the tense cat-and-mouse episode "Killers of the Deep" while perennial heavy Nehemiah Persoff gets to chew the scenery as an escaped convict in "Deadly Creature Below!" Robert Loggia plays a scientist determined to retrieve a submerged youth serum at all costs in "Graveyard of Fear" and Albert Salmi, who would appear in Allen's "Lost in Space" the same year in a similar role, dons a pirate's garb in the enjoyable "Dead Man's Doubloons."

"Voyage" borrows from Agatha Christie in the "Ten Little Indians"-like "The Death Ship." Interesting camerawork and impressive special effects are the highlights of "The Monster's Web" and "The Menfish."

"The Mechanical Man" features James Darren as an evil android intent on world domination. Darren would later star in Allen's short-lived series "The Time Tunnel." This particular episode is one of the few with a "special guest star" in the form of veteran Arthur O'Connell. There is also an eye-popping view of the Seaview as it is hooked to an underwater laboratory.

The major highlights of the disc are "The Phantom Strikes" and its sequel "The Phantom Strikes Again." Both episodes allow stars Richard Basehart and David Hedison the opportunity to stretch their acting mettle. Alfred Ryder is outstanding as a malevolent spirit determined to possess Captain Crane's body. Even featured player Del Monroe ("Kowalski") has a "moment" in "The Phantom Strikes."

As in the other compilations, the special features are at a minimum but the superb sound and color make up for the weaknesses in the "extras" department.

3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Like my friend Kenneth said there is much in this compilation that is a rehash of episodes and seasons past that can be condemned. However, there are still some highlights that can be savored.

Of course, the principal actors, all eight of 'em (Richard Basehart, David Hedison, Terry Becker, Del Monroe, Paul Trinka, Richard Bull, Arch Whiting, and Robert Dowdell, , get their share of screen time. But, careful eyes will notice the "unnamed crewmen" - the blond guy, the brown-haired guy, the short Latino, and, yes, the black guy - bouncing around in several installments, with no lines but their appearance is noticeable. They can "rock and roll" with the best of them as the Seaview experiences another explosion or attack from a deadly creature.

There is an extensive use of stock footage but there are some installments that provide some new glimpses of the Seaview, the Flying Sub, and the control room.

As far as the individual episodes are concerned, I found something praiseworthy to be said about several of them:

"The Brand of the Beast," a sequel to "Werewolf" is much more entertaining and better acted than its forerunner. "Werewolf," in my books was just bad.

"The Creature" features veteran ham Lyle Bettger as the protagonist, a scientist linked to a malevolent plant growth.

"Death from the Past" has two fun Nazi's from World War II trying to take over the world for the Third Reich. Don't bother to understand how they hadn't aged in thirty-five years. The ep is just loads of fun with guest stars John Van Dreelan and Jan Merlin as the swastika-wearing officers.

Though the effect is rather cheesy, "The Heat Monster" sports some wicked lines, delivered with relish by Jim Mills, who would pop up several times as the voice behind the "monster." Alfred Ryder is the guest star and he puts in another memorable characterization.

"The Fossil Men" has rocklike humanoids attempting to take over the world (GASP!!!) and even though their existence is implausible, the premise is engaging.

"No Escape from Death" tries to muster up some of the drama of the more serious first season, incorporating a lot of sepia-tinted footage from that season into the storyline. 'Not a bad show and it provided a interesting "explanation" on how the three crewmen were rescued from the belly of a giant jellyfish.

"The Mummy" recycles a lot of Bernard Herrmann's score from the Gary Cooper/Susan Hayward film "Garden of Evil." It's the use of Bernie's music that enhances a rather routine installment.

Finally, it is Robert Drasnin's inventive score, along with the marvelous Michael Dunn as "The Clown", which makes "The Wax Men" one of the best in the entire four-season run of the show.

As the reader can probably tell, I really liked this half of season three much more than the first half. Stories may have been rehashed but there was a little creativity in them.

I just wish there were some commentary from surviving cast members or some other extras, the bonuses that we DVD buyers have come to suspect.

But, considering that this may be the last set for some time, I suppose we should be grateful for having seasons one through three.

A fantastic voyage awaits the viewer of this 1960's series! My only complaint? This is NOT the "Complete Series." Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea went for 4 seasons and 110 episodes. This collection only completes through season 3. Hopefully the remaineder will be on Amazon soon!

This was by far the favorite TV series I remember from when I was a kid. I have not (re)viewed many episodes yet, but I can say I am surprised of the quality of the product. Subject is mostly not childish at all, and though sometimes really "hard core" cold war (those were the times, weren't they), some other times the treatment of subjects like nuclear catastrophe and military idiocy are suprising. Other "cloak and dagger" episodes are, of course idiotic. But image quality is good, acting also, props etc. good.

More than nostalgy!

Natalie's albums are masterpieces. You can really get into her music by listening to them. BUT, to get the FULL experience, you MUST see her perform live!!

I have seen her in concert a dozen or so times, and she has made me laugh, cry, and wisked me away to a place of pure peace and contentment with the beauty of her voice, and the emotion she conveys. When she sings live, her stage presence is POWERFUL. She mesmorizes me. This DVD is another opportunity to see the BEST----Mrs. Natalie Merchant. Don't miss it. You get to hear her tell the story behind each song. Her performance of "Verdi Cries" is particularly beautiful.

No one can sing like her, and no one can move me the way she does.

Editorial Review:

Natalie Merchant got her start at age 17 as the lead singer of the folk-pop outfit 10,000 Maniacs. Her silken voice and outspoken social awareness wooed music fans and cemented her status as one of the day's most astute and captivating artists. Though 10,000 Maniacs achieved a level of critical success as a major-label act in the mid-80's, Merchant decided to go it alone in 1994. Since then her popularity has bloomed in the wake of Tigerlily, Ophelia, Motherland, Live in Concert: Natalie Merchant and The House Carpenter's Daughter. Featured here are the hits in an intimate, one-of-a-kind setting.
