Let the Adventures Begin... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This 1985 boxed DVD set contains the initial Grenada Television offerings of Jeremy Brett in his uncanny incarnation as the famous private detective. In this collection, David Burke does a sympathetic portrayal of Holmes' collaborator Dr. Watson (replaced in later productions by Edward Hardwicke).

The production values for these one hour episodes are exceptional for television, featuring lots of period-appropriate on-location shooting in London and around England, superb period costumes and music, and a faithful recreation of period customs. The story selections actually come from the Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes and the Return of Sherlock Holmes as well as the Adventures. Among the highlights: the classic closed room murder mystery in "The Adventure of the Speckled Band", the puzzling code of "The Adventure of the Dancing Men", and the mournful outcome of "The Final Problem."

Jeremy Brett is aloof, energetic and intense as Holmes; his sheer velocity seems to carry along the patient and more personable Dr. Watson in his wake. Their partnership is here more faithfully captured in its various nuances than the older Basil Rathbone versions, where Watson was played as a buffoon.

This collection, and the other Grenada Television DVD collections of Sherlock Holmes, are terrific entertainment for fans of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous fictional detective.

One of the best seasons ever 5 out of 5 stars.

I loved "Survivor, The Australian Outback". It had the best cast and most interesting location. The trials and tribulations these people went through was so interesting and heart-wrenching at times. It was nice to watch it after watching so many Survivor seasons set in tropical locations.

Never disappoints 5 out of 5 stars.

Survivor never disappoints me. I have been a fan since day 1, but my younger niece just started watching it. Season 2, The Australian Outback was one of my all time favorites and this way I get to share it with a new fan. And it was a great Christmas gift.

Beware Bootleg Version 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The series speaks for itself, but buyers should be aware that some of the items offered here are bootlegs.

In particular, the one that has been offered by marketplace merchant kingdvdseller is not the official Paramount release of the complete series; it is an import edition, as listed on another Amazon page:

[...]

While buyers may prefer this import version to the original, it is not what is advertised here as the official Paramount edition and has also been reported as being an unofficial Asian region-free bootleg edition:

"The box sets known as the "Asian Edition" or "Chosen Collection" which are region-free are confirmed as being bootlegs." [...]

"Paramount Home Entertainment or CBS studios has never licensed to a 3rd party to replicate/produce/manufacture discs in Asia Pacific." - Joe Ruvalcaba, Paramount Licensing.

This region free Asian or Chosen edition comes in differed packaging with generic disc sleeves and it lacks the bonus disc. The video and audio quality are poor, the discs are cheap Chinese knockoffs (with Chinese characters etched into them and with the individual disc serial numbers melted away). It is questionable that Amazon sells this edition at all, but in any case it should be listed on its own Amazon page above, not here.

To avoid confusion or misrepresentation, buyers should ask market sellers which edition they will receive.

Flawed Blu-ray 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Great Season (which includes the outstanding 'A Very Supernatural Christmas').

One huge complaint with the Blu-ray edition: There is no menu -- other than a pop-up, which can only be accessed after the first episode of each disc is already playing. Very annoying if you're looking to play a specific episode. Unlike the DVDs of Seasons 1 & 2 (which go straight to the main menu, offering a list of the episodes featured on each disc), the Blu-ray discs of Season 3 begin to play the first episode straight off, forcing you to have to hit pause, then bring up the pop-up menu to find the episode you're looking for.

The yellow-eyed demon is vanquished, but at a terrible price. The battle that brought him down released hundreds of demons from Hell into an unsuspecting world. And it cost Sam his life. But a grief-stricken Dean made a deal with the Crossroad Demon – his soul for Sam's resurrection. Now Dean has just one year to live. One year to fight the unholy, the twisted, the ghoulish. One year to say farewell to Sam. And one year for Sam to search desperately for some way to save his brother. Mind-bending adventure awaits as the Winchester brothers continue their astonishing odyssey into the supernatural...and their personal odyssey into destiny.

hard crash for a once great show 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This DVD set isn't worth buying. The only episodes worth watching are the ones with Captain Murphy still on them. Replacing the genius of Captain Murphy is the horrible Tornado Shanks and the rest of the season follows this trend until you'll find yourself saying this is virtually un-watchable. Horrible death for a great series.

Has it's moments. 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you are a fan like me, you'll want it to complete the collection and because it has Harry Goz's Last episodes. It definately has its moments and "Stormy Waters: Pundit" is a fun extra. It may be unfortunately the least good season of the show but don't write the rest of the show off because season 4 is awesome!

The beginning of the end 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After the death of Harry Goz, this show really suffered. Captain Murphy was EASILY the funniest aspect of this show. Shanks can't hold a candle to Murph. And the supporting cast was just there to be victimized by Murphy. This show should have been canceled after Harry Goz died.

Oh, what a difference a year makes. The crew of the classic 1972 series Sealab 2020 has been replaced with a gang of misfits unfit for public service. Their mission: to investigate underwater colonization. They are doing a very bad job.

SIMPLE THE BEST! 5 out of 5 stars.

I AM A HUGE STARGATE FAN. I WAS SO SORRY WHEN IT ENDED BUT NOW I CAN LOOK AT THE SHOW ANYTIME I WANT AND I AM GOING TO GET EVERY SEASON.

A Great Science Fiction Series 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Definitely, one of he best science fiction series I have ever known of. The cast is great, not to mention the special effects and the plots. I strongly recommend Stargate as a must-have series.

Sad that I missed it the first time around... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I hate to admit it, but I missed SG-1 when it originally aired on TV, whether on Showtime or Sci-fi Channel. Due to recent back surgery, I decided to buy season 1 from iTunes, and immediately fell in love with it. Once I finished that season, I could not see spending $40 on a low quality digital version of season 2 when I could buy it brand new on DVD here for $25. And I have decided to go back and purchase season 1 from here, as well as seasons 3 through 10, to have it in higher quality.

If you have not seen this series, it is good, solid story-telling. No, it will not win any Earth-moving awards, but it will keep you going while telling a good sci-fi story set in the modern day with current technology.

I cannot recommend this series and these DVDs highly enough.

Editorial Review:

Fans disappointed by the demise of the Stargate SG-1 television series after ten fruitful seasons will delight in The Ark of Truth, the first full-length movie to follow in the show’s wake. In fact, some will be more than pleased--they’ll be relieved. For not only does the 102-minute film offer an opportunity to enjoy the same likable characters, reliable effects work, superior writing, and other elements that made the series so appealing, but after season upon season in which viewers were left wondering how everything turned out, The Ark finally brings at least one cliffhanger to a conclusion: the storyline involving the villains known as the Ori, who dominated SG-1’s final two years. Our heroes (including Ben Browder as fearless leader Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell, Amanda Tapping as the intrepid Lt. Col. Samantha Carter, Christopher Judge as the implacable alien Teal’c, Michael Shanks as the ever-resourceful Dr. Daniel Jackson, and Claudia Black as the irreverent Vala) have long known that the Ori are perhaps the most irresistible force they’ve ever encountered, in part because they are "ascended" beings who don’t exist in recognizable physical form (their spaceships do, and they're huge). But now the team faces an even greater threat: the Ori have set their sights on good ol’ Planet Earth. That’s where the Ark comes in; if the good guys can just get their hands on it, they hope this ancient artifact will effectively put the big, bad Ori, their minions, and their entire religion (known as "Origin") out of business. Of course, it ain’t easy. Both collectively and individually, the team will be severely tested, their task complicated not only by the Ori but by an arrogant, clueless government official whose meddling results in the return of the metallic, insect-like Replicators. There’s little doubt about how it will all turn out--after all, there’s at least one more movie already in the pipeline--but it’s all about the ride, and despite a few flaws (as was sometimes the case with the series, the script leans a bit too hard on exposition and techno babble), this one is lots of fun. Bonus features include commentary by writer-director Robert Cooper and others, a lengthy "making of," and a helpful "prelude" to bring the uninitiated up to speed. --Sam Graham

Editorial Review:

It now seems clear that season 5 of Stargate SG-1 will be remembered as the one in which something went awry with Daniel Jackson. Lots of behind-the-scenes rumors fueled the idea of cast tension, but whatever the problem, his sudden departure from the show was obviously through a quickly contrived scenario. In retrospect, there must have been a problem for some while before the weird penultimate episode ("Meridian"). Michael Shanks looks frequently bored in his rare moments of individual screen time as he infiltrates a Goa'uld meeting and even when making friends with a creature everyone else wants dead. In fact, there's only one point when everyone really seems to be having fun, and that's in the spoof 100th episode "Wormhole X-treme!"

Most shows go through a run-around, skin-of-their-teeth period awaiting renewal, and it certainly seems to have affected storylines this year. For example, a next generation of younger SG teams is introduced. Replacements? The most unfortunate aspect of things, however, was that not a single episode managed to stand alone on its own merits. Every single story was dependent on a part of the greater interwoven warring-species threads. Some of the one-off tales were terrific in and of themselves, but it was as if the writers fell into the trap of having to refer to as much backstory as possible, perhaps to ensure loose ends could be easily wrapped up? Ultimately none of this mattered since the show went on for quite a while. --Paul Tonks

Voyager DVD sale 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I recently purchased this DVD from amazon.com and I was very satisfied with the product when I received this in the mail a few weeks ago. I really enjoyed the episodes, plus the special features. And I thought that it was a really good, reasonable price for a Voyager DVD set..they usually run about $[...] or more. But it was well worth the $[...] I spent! :)

A solid fifth season of star-spanning adventure 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Overall, season five of "Star Trek: Voyager" offers a very good batch of episodes. Even the few shows that are a little clunky at least have some interesting ideas being explored. But mostly you get intense, engaging episodes with top-notch special effects. Quick shout-outs go to the creepy "Night", the very amusing "Bride of Chaotica!", and the gritty Borg two-parter, "Dark Frontier".

And there's a great season closer, "Equinox, Part One", where the stranded Voyager crew meets up with another lost Starfleet vessel, one whose captain and crew are willing to cross quite a few lines to find a way to get back home, lines Captain Janeway and her crew would never cross, or at least haven't yet. This look at what Voyager and her crew members could have themselves become- or might yet become?- is quite compelling, and results in a darn fine episode (though you'll have to buy season six to see how it ends). And it's only one of many fine episodes.

The DVD set of the fifth season of "Star Trek: Voyager" includes the usual generous special features, and quality picture and sound. And Paramount finally dropped the price of this and other "Trek" boxed sets down into the "reasonably priced" realm. Get 'em while they're still there!

Editorial Review:

STAR TREK VOYAGER: THE COMPLETE FIFTH SEASON features the adventures of the Voyager crew led by Capt. Janeway (Mulgrew). Throughout the season, the Voyager crew plunges into a vast, empty, star-less expanse, makes a surprising discovery in a most unexpected place, has a chance encounter with the remains of a destroyed Borg vessel that results in an unusual effect on Seven of Nine, and suddenly discovers a wormhole that apparently leads to Earth.

Voyager Second Time Around 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Star Trek was entering it's 30'th anniversary when Star Trek Voyager began it's sophmore season so there was a great deal of hoopla surrounding this season. In terms of the show the feeling was different.Unlike in the first season where the crew of Voyager were dealing with all their new challanges, this season found them truly facing the unknown from another "cartaker" trying to manipulate Kes in "Cold Fire" to Janeway meeting up with her hero Amelia Earheart in 'The 37's'. This also marks the first appearance of Q in this series,on this occasion moderating a fellow Q's wish to commit suicide in the excellent and topical 'Death Wish'. The doctor also found love and Chakotay discovered an ancient riddle of his people in 'Tattoo';many of the episodes in this season had a slightly surreal and mystical bent as everything of familiarity to the Voyager crew started to be questioned. Even in 'Alliances" Janeway cites the Delta Quadrant as a region of space without many rules. This season also works out some kinks in the shows construction;the Kazon were a rather uninteresting and poorly written adversary and came off as little more then a poor man's Klingon. So a series of story arcs come into play during this season in which they made their exit;a trader on the Voyager crew betrays unformation to the equally tretchurous Seska until being foiled by Neelix. Then Seska lies to Chakotay about having his baby (it's actually the Kazon Cullah's) and,in the cliffhanger the Kazon story is concluded after a failed attempt by Seska to commandere the ship. Over time this is probably the Voyager season I've seen the most because of all the type surrounding the anniversary year, also because I think many Star Trek fans were looking for any signs of sophmore slump. Well there really wasn't;just some weaker moments where the kinks of the series were being ironed out. And for sure great things were by now truly on the horizon for this series.
