Continued Brilliance 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

In its second season, Six Feet Under continues to brilliantly build on what was established in the first season. There were many stand-out episodes, particularly in the earlier portion of the season, and the directions each of the characters were taken is very interesting. Federico, a character I found myself disliking during Season One, was developed quite a bit more. Keith, on the other hand, showed an uglier side of himself that added some great drama into his relationship with David, which is one of the main plot lines of this season.

Come to think of it, each of the character arcs were risky in this season, and most of them paid off. I'm not left with that "I need to know what happens next" as I was with the last season, but what I am is excited to see how these stories will continue. The use of music and the direction continues to be phenomenal and I'm willing to bet that at least nine of these episodes will make you cry, and that all of them will make you laugh. The plots jump around from Nathan/Brenda's relationship, to David/Keith's drama, to Ruth's situation with herself and Nikolai, to Claire's budding interest in the arts, and many more, but you'll never find yourself swamped by 'too many things going on at once.' Each episode is planned well, leaving you feeling sad when the show ends with a white-out and the credits begin to roll.

I usually don't talk much about Special Features when reviewing a DVD unless the extras are really horrible or are outstanding, but I have to comment on Alan Ball's commentary track for "The Last Time." While Ball is, in my opinion, one of the best writer/directors out there, this commentary track is a joke. It consists of him saying "this is a good scene because ___ did a good job" and then just letting the scene play without further comment. The only thing other than the occasional talk of camera work (all of that is in the first five minutes) is him laughing at one of the jokes every now and then. Why even bother putting a commentary track if you aren't going to comment on the work?

But--special features aside--the second season of this brilliant show is absolutely a must-have. I'm not quite sure whether or not it's better or as good than the first season, but fans of the first won't be disappointed.

9/10

How About A 'Best Of' SNL By Year? 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

How about making 'Best Of' Saturday Night Live by year? Not by host, not something with interviews and commentary, just best skits only and by year. Best of 1978, Best Of 1986, Best Of 1994, etc...

Eddie is wonderful!!! 4 out of 5 stars.

I love this DVD... It shows the actual footage of Eddie's characters on SNL... **** The only thing that I did not like about this DVD is that it is only for an hour...

Eddie At His Best ! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is Eddie Murphy before all of the family friendly movies which have seemed to define his career as of late. This is an edgy & extremeley funny Murphy. Here are some highlights: There is the Eddie as Jessie Jackson, clamoring for Jewish votes in a very not so politically correct sketch. There is Eddie as BuckWheat which, while funny, also has a serious undertone concerning the sensationalization of topics in the media. There is Eddie as Velvet Jones, who simply wants to help women get out of their "ho-hum" lives and into meaning employment. There is Eddie as James Brown, and it's simply classic. There is Eddie as Stevie Wonder (and Joe Piscapoe as Frank Sinatra) in another classic skit. I dare you not to laugh! All in all, this is Eddie as a starving artist. During this period of his career, he pushed boundaries, made you think about some serious issues, and most importantly made you laugh!

It just starts getting better 5 out of 5 stars.

As with the 1st 2 season 3 of the simpsons has some great episodes 1 in which has to be the best is Stark Raving Dad in which after being in the wash 1 of homers white t-shirts ends up in the wash with barts red hat and turns pink homer ends going to work in it where burns notices it and gets homer sent to the loony bin where he ends up in a room with a big guy who thinks he's michael jackson the result is 1 of the best jokes ever in which the whole town gather to meet him thinking he is the real deal.

Another great season and must have

Great! My fiance needed the 3rd season for his collection. Hilarious! Great episodes!

It only gets better. 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this season along with season 4 while at a store with my then fiance and spent the next few weeks watching them while she went off to work. Season 3 has some of my favorite episodes, Like Father, Like Clown, wherein Krusty tells the story of his estrangement from his Rabbi father and Bart and Lisa set out to bring the two of them back together again. Other notables include When Flanders Failed, wherein Flanders opens a store for lefthanded individuals only to have it fail due to Homer's spiteful wish, and Bart the Murderer, which introduces us to Fat Tony and his gang. This season also includes the second Treehouse of Horror, one of my favorites actually. This one features the Monkey's Paw, Bart possessing supernatural powers and the Frankenstein sketch where Mr. Burns uses Homer's brain in a new, robotic worker which he believes will solve the problem of the incompetant employee. It also, interestingly enough, introduces one of my favorite Simpsons traditions (at least in Halloween shows), that in which a character is fatally injured but describes his injuries in detail before he finally does die. "Every bone...shattered...Organs...leaking vital fluids...Slight headache...Loss of appetite...Smithers...I'm going to die."
But this season features a great many other excellent episodes. Of particular interest to me are Flaming Moe's, which featured a guest appearance by Aerosmith, Radio Bart, Rancho Relaxo and Homer at the Bat. Oh, and of course let's not forget I Married Marge. Saturdays of Thunder and Lisa's Pony aren't my favorite episodes but they're still good. Then of course Mr. Lisa goes to Washington and Homer Defined are classics well worth watching. Of those two I'd have to say the former is my favorite. "Bart! Get out of the Spirit of St. Louis!"
One of my favorite features of this box set is the commentary, which is not only provided by the show runners, writers and the ever present Matt Groening this time around, but also by the voice cast for the Simpsons themselves, Nancy Cartwright, Julie Cavner, Yeardley Smith and of course Dan Castellaneta. It's actually quite funny, since not only do they discuss their memories of working on many of the episodes (they're featured in all but a few of them), but sometimes they do it in some of their character voices. It's quite funny to hear Dan switch from his normal voice into Krusty or Homer's right in the middle of a sentence, which he does on occasion. Only Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer are absent from the commentary here, but Hank shows up in one episode of Season 4..
Another neat feature as I may have mentioned in a prior Simpsons review, is the fact that you can listen to the episodes on muitple languages. Before they were only available in French but now you can listen to them in Spanish as well. It's quite funny to hear the Spanishh or French version of Homer's classic D'oh! This is in no way intended to be a slight on Spanish or French people. I've just always had a fascination for hearing movies I grew up with in other languages, particularly if I can't speak the language in question.
But getting on with the review here, this season also features an episode that, if memory serves, won Marsha Wallace an award for outstanding voiceover performance for Mrs. Krabappel. I refer, of course, to Bart the Lover, where Bart takes his revenge on Mrs. Krabappel for a long stint of detentions by responding to her personal add by posing as a sexy man named Woodrow, only to feel gilty later when Woodrow stands her up. The subplot of Homer trying to swear off swearing is also quite funny. So if you haven't already done so and you're collecting Simpsons DVD's, you should definitely pick this one up. It reminds us all of what the show once was.

Another money extraction from the lemmings 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I've seen some of the new CGI effects, and some are very nice. Others, flat and artificial. In that sense, they aren't any more "real" than the original grainy footage done with mattes and models.

But even if the new effects were state of the art, they are married to an old series where the sets are obviously plywood and cheap paint. The heavy makeup is not subtle either. Some of the medical instruments are literally oddly-shaped salt shakers. The rocks on the planet surfaces are a plastic or styrofoam-type material. This show was not meant for high definition. It was meant for standard definition analog television transmission. If you like seeing all the flaws, fine. That's not my bag, and maybe not yours either.

For me, the remastering is an exercise in futility. The show was what it was -- episodic S-F done quickly on a relatively modest budget. I loved the show, and spent a lot of my own time and effort trying to get the show revived back in the 1970s. All of you who enjoyed The Next Generation, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, and the motion pictures can thank me and those like me -- who convinced Paramount that there was a real market for the continuing franchise.

But I've bought the first DVD sets of The Original Series, and I think they are a better representation of the show. Feel free to buy what you like, but newer is not necessarily better. Higher definition is not necessarily better. Why is it better to see all the pores on Captain Kirk's nose? To me, that's a distraction. The script's the thing. The acting is the thing. The anachronistic sets and costumes and grainy shots of spacecraft models... well, you're going to have to suspend your disbelief. Shakespeare had the worst special effects and sets imaginable back in his Globe Theater days. Imagination beats CGI any day of the week. Ultimately, the CGI does not look "real" either. And it clashes with the style of the live-action footage.

I fear that many purchases of these remastered editions will be knee-jerk responses by fans enticed by something new and different, without regard to whether it is truly an improvement. If you think the new mastering and effects significantly adds to the joy of this classic series, then that is certainly a valid reason to buy. I only want to caution people that they may have the same tepid reaction I have.

One of the most surprising little pleasures on television, and even more beautiful on Blue-Ray 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Supernatural is, frankly, one of the more surprising pleasures available on television at this time. When I first heard about it, it was billed as Route 66 meets the X-files. Two guys, on the road together, fighting monsters and investigating paranormal mysteries. A buddy show. Maybe a little horror thrown in.

Well, this show has turned out to be so much more than that. This show is a family show at its core, but I don't mean one that you can watch with your whole family--this is only for teenagers and older. The scary monsters that we were promised from the first? Yes, they are here, and they are at times scream out loud scary. I don't really love horror films, but I enjoy a good scare now and again, and this really fits the bill for me. But about the "Family" show tag I used--the two guys are brothers, and their relationship makes the show. The two are intensely protective of each other, often to their own detriment. Other members of the family are also involved, and there is an extended family of people with whom they work. Monster of the week stories pepper the series, but the show shines best when the backstory, the mythology arc is explored. The mythology is as deep as the X-files ever was, but less confusing and more goal directed. It feels like Eric Kripke (the Executive Producer) has a firm grip on where the overall story is going. Where Heroes (a show which I really do enjoy) often meanders, wandering off in confusing ways, Supernatural keeps serious focus on plot, plot, plot.

The blu-ray production of season three is a real joy to watch. Blacks are deep but well distinguished one from another, and the picture is very crisp. Sound is good. The special features on this one range from the silly to the funny to the very informative, much like on previous editions.

If you've heard about this show, and wondered if you should give it a chance, yes you should. Start with season 1--it is well worth your time. But season three completely blows previous seasons out of the water with its intense narrative, and performances from the lead actors that are harrowing. The final scene of the final episode of season 3...well, chills up and down my spine is an understatement.

Next Gen Really Hits Its Stride See it in HD 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

There are several compelling reasons to purchase this set:

This is by far the best of several great NG seasons; writing is crisp, the dialog is visceral, the tempo is great, and the shows are generally as good or better than you will find in earlier or later years.

The characters' development is proceeding on all fronts, human, Klingon, and crew-wise. The production, writing, and directing is nearing its peak.

But, as important as any of these are, don't forget ILM (div of LucasFilms) did the special effects. This is as high a quality of special effect as you will ever see in television. It is guaranteed with all the computer and CGI junk as there is now, you will not see better sci-fi action than this. MANY OF YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN THE ORIGINAL Next Gen SHOWS IN HI DEF. YOU MUST!! It is leaps and bounds better than other versions.

Many of us trekkers are just now getting the high quality 1080i or 1080p high def televisions. You will not believe how much better the quality of Next Gen is until you see it on one of these hi def sets. Get one with HDMI and upcoding, and it will up-convert your standard def show like Next Gen DVD TO HDMI and 1080i or p. It is unbelievable!! As good as the VHS tapes were, as good as you can record Trek off TV nowdays, the factory stuff with the Dolby Surround encoding cannot be beat. Many movies do not have the quality of these Trek shows. Some of these shows had as much as 3 Million in special effects budgets- for 1987 that was a ton of money. Some blockbuster films did not have much more budget than a single trek show!

So, add this new compelling element, top quality video, to the OTHER strengths of Season Three Next Gen and you have an all time winner. No collectors set of videos would be complete without Year 3, the Third Season, of Star Trek Next Gen. It is excellence personified. The stereo is near perfect, audio mixing is the best I ever heard (check out the subwoofer content in engineering scenes), surround is first class, the directing, writing, acting, and direction, cannot be beat for TV, and the special effects are as good as you will ever see. You can bet there will never be another Trek Next Gen. But if you have a high def television, you are in for a treat, as this is historic. The Pinnacle of television.

This is the complete package for Sci Fi and Trek fans. You get the action, the effects, the cerebral, philosophical nature of Trek, and video that cannot be beat, 19 hours of it, for 62$. Mighty hard to beat. Gene, the Great Bird of the Galaxy, would be proud. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to some really classic trek and sci fi and at least get season three. If you are a trek fan, this one season is the least you can try out. Science Fiction simply does not get any better than this. Star Trek The Next Generation - The Complete Third Season

A Review as it should be, on the series, not the PRICE. 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

First off I want to say that a review of a product is not supposed to be about the cost. A buyer can make that decision on their own, what they choose to spend. A review is supposed to be about the PRODUCT: in this case, Season 1 of Six Feet Under. Is it worth watching? YES Is it an entertaining show? YES Are the storylines and characters engaging and interesting? YES Is it worth the hours spent watching it? YES

Over the last few years I started renting TV shows on DVD and watching the series consequtively, I found that I enjoy it more this way. I can watch one or two episodes a night- many nights in a row if I want. It is helpful in getting sort of hooked on a show, and also keeping the momentum of the storylines going, and also my memory of events (vs. watching it over a period of say 5 years). So, if you're looking at Six Feet Under as a series like this to buy/watch- I highly recommend it. Buy it, rent it, borrow it from a friend, watch re-runs, whatever you want. But do NOT miss this show! I might just bite the bullet and say perhaps this is my favorite TV show of ALL time.

Ok, as for Season 1...it's a bit slow going for me at first. I think my hubby and I were on disc two and we sort of looked at each other and said, do we want to keep watching this? The characters just weren't clicking for us. And the funny dream and daydream sequences were annoying. But, I said, let's finish the season out and then see what we think. I am SO glad that we did! By then, we were hooked. Each night we looked forward to an episode or two of Six Feet Under. Sometimes I ran out to the video store at 10pm to get a new one because we just couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next.

So ya...the stories get better, the characters get a bit more defined and fun, and eventually there are less weird dream sequences. So if you are looking for a TV show that will keep you up at night watching, this is it! Stick it out, give it a try and I bet you won't be disappointed.

Season 4 in yet another great season of the simpsons it also has 1 of the best halloween episodes in Treehouse Of Horror III there are some greats stories the 1 with the killer krusty doll has to be the best in which homer gets bart a krusty doll from a gypsie and it ends up trying to kill him in another 1 bart revives some zombies and they go on killing spree around springfield in which you see 1 of the best jokes ever where they go up to homer and knock on his head looking for brains but it turns out he has no brain

Love it 5 out of 5 stars.

I absolutely love this season, I bought season 1-4 because in my opinion those are the only ones worth having. It is my belief that after season 5 the series went down.

Episodes GREAT, DVD format NOT SO GREAT 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Do not get me wrong, I am a HUGE Simpsons fan! I have seasons 1 through 9 and I still laugh at the jokes. This season has one of the best lisa episodes in the whole series, "I Love Lisa." It also has such classics as the season opening, "Kamp Krusty" and the season finale, "Krusty gets Kancelled." With so many more episodes I can not complain on any level about the storytelling or the acting or the animation.

The only problem I have with the dvd is the menu format for the DVD. It certainly seems that the season 4 dvds are the black sheep of all the seasons. The menu set up is not very simpsonesque. This is the only criticism that I have for the dvd. Otherwise, Enjoy the season! oh also, with buying this simpsons dvd, as with any others, listen to the commentaries. It has some great insight for the show's running.
