At long last I bought it and am so glad. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have waited many years to purchase this series. The sale discount and free shipping at Amazon prompted lme to finally take the plunge. The production of them is so perfect. David Suchet is Poirot as Agatha Christie wrote him--finally---the period is so beautifully detailed that sometimes I watch them just to enjoy the meticulous detail of the production.
For anyone who has ever read Agatha Christie and loved it-these are a must.
Watching these is like visiting beautiful old friends. Even though I know whodunit, I always enjoy the intricate and subtle process Poirot goes through to arrive at his solutions.

Nobody does it better..Agatha 5 out of 5 stars.

Agatha Christie's Poirot - The Classic Collection
Can't say I've ever read an Agatha Christie novel. Can't say I ever will. You see I'm fearful after indulging myself in the excellence of the British TV Marple and Poirot series that I'll be somehow.... disappointed in the books (apologies to the undoubted genius of Ms Christie).

The Brits of course have developed a marked proficiency transferring to TV the period murder mystery genre; Sherlock Holmes, Cribb, Hannay, Marple and of course Poirot to name a few. The States also deserve some bouquets for Nero Wolfe.

Of course I'm also a sucker for quirky. I'm also partial to Morse and Munk. But ahhhh... Suchet's Poirot. That waddle (did he borrow it from De Vito's Penguin in Batman Returns), that immodest genius, those finicky foibles. This is a multi-dimensional character portrayal demanding repeat viewings just to satiate yourself with the charming individuality of a persona expertly expressed. Few actors have this kind of talent and if you have ever seen David Suchet in other roles you will understand this assessment.

Ah yes you are probably interested in the other elements of the series. Well, the support actors are proficient in their portrayals. Hugh Fraser does the bumbling but affable Dr Watson type Captain Hastings well for light relief. Philip Jackson portrays the competent but unimaginative Chief Inspector Japp well and Pauline Moran is enjoyable as the under-rated, methodical and quite resourseful Miss Moran. The sets are appropriate to the period and the story and scripts are well crafted.

But the difference between this series and the other excellent period murder mysteries available, is Suchet's portrayal of Poirot (no disrespect the leads of the other series who are all excellent). Suchet, in my opinion, is the best and though some critics may be disappointed with the translation of Ms Christie's books to the small screen, I doubt that even Agatha would have been disappointed by Suchet's portrayal of her famed detective.

For the interested, I also should point out another suggestion. Though the hour long episodes are excellent, the movie length versions of the series (I think there are about 13) are superior, despite the absence in many of them of his three companions.

Warning. This series is not for you action junkies waiting for a quick fix. This is not the mental chewing gum entertainment of a soapie. No belly laughs every few moments. Like others of its genre it requires your constant attention and sometimes multiple viewings to work out what has happened and why Poirot comes to the conclusions he does. But that's the fun of the genre....it keeps you guessing, keeps you interested. And you also often end up watching the idiosyncracies of the character interpreted by Suchet.

For me I give this series a 5 plus rating. For Suchet? A 6, only because I believe nobody does it better.

Love Project Runway 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I do love Project Runway and I couldn't wait to get each season on DVD. While I am glad to have each show without commercials, I am disappointed that there is no additional material included. I was hoping for outtakes, extra interviews, or SOMETHING I hadn't seen on Bravo. Complete letdown. I'm not sorry I bought it, I'm sorry I paid so much for it.

FINALLY! Creativity on Reality TV! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I was immediately hooked when I caught some re-runs of this show on Bravo, and decided to buy the DVDs...ALL OF THEM! As an artist and photographer, I was immediately captured by the premise of the creative challenges presented to the budding designers each week. Heidi Klum is the attractive hostess of the show, ably supported by Tim Gunn, the Director of the renowned Parsons New School of Design. 12 hopeful designers start off the competition, and are eliminated one at a time each week after they are evaluated by judges (including designer Michael Kors & Nina Garcia from Elle Magazine) on the runway for their fashion creations. Some of the creative challenges include using things purchased at a grocery store to create a dress, re-designing the uniform of a postal worker (after spending a day in the field wearing the uniform), and working with the models (who also get eliminated one at a time each week) to create the model's ideal wedding gown. Reality TV is usually about the drama and contrived situations; do they exist here? Sure, however, it is refreshing to see that the majority of the show is about design and critiquing the unique creations that the designers whip up...and I do mean whip, as each challenge is done with very little lead time. The last 3 "survivors" get to exhibit an entire line at New York's Fashion week (actress Parker Posey sits in as one of the judges), with the grand prize including a photo spread in Elle Magazine and $100k in funding to create their own design line of clothes.

Extras on the DVD include "Wear Are They Now" featurettes for the final 5 designers; deleted scenes (which are best watching AFTER you watch the episodes, as they show further behind-the-scenes antics of the 12 contestants); a design photo gallery for all 12 designers.

An excellent set for up-and-coming designers as well as models. This show is a class act that rarely gets bogged down in the emotional drama (although there are a few choice scenes!).

No Sophomore Slump Here! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Prime Suspect 2 is just as well made and compelling as its predecessor. This story was especially interesting because of the race relations angle that was a focus of much of the program. Helen Mirren's Jane is not always a likable character but she seems very very real and the series really showcases what a fine actress Mirren is.

Big Fan 5 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed the 2nd episode. It has all the original cast, and shows the transition of Det. Tennyson. Its a rehash for me, I saw all on PBS. Its great to see quality in this dumbed down world.

VERY COMPELLING SERIES 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought my wife both Part 1 and Part 2 of the Prime Suspect series for Christmas. I had watched them at the time they were originally broadcast. Yet I was surprised at the excellance shown throughout each episode. As usual, the main character is a very complicated person. But this series adds an interesting element by introducing a Black officer into an all White unit, where he is definitly unwelcome. The parallel challanges to the main character and her new officer are very well done.
There is an interesting "did he do it or didn't he do it" element that has a novel twist at the end. I bet you can guess what I'm going to buy my wife for her birthday in March.

If not the best, close to it. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This one will not lift you up. It's not a feel-good movie, but it IS a feel-real one. Of the whole series, it is the only one with decent extras - well, a decent extra. The father's part is a bit over-written, and I could nit-pick a few other things, but I was glued to this, unwilling to endure my usual sporadic watching of movies until the end. It's treatment of alcoholism nicely balances the hopes, progress and setbacks that accompanies treatment programs, from what I've gleaned from others. Finally, the acting is superb. Mirren made this her part and her character.

Prime Suspect #7 5 out of 5 stars.

Sorry to see Helen leave the series behind her! Her acting abilities would have carried he far beyond #7, but all good things must come to an end. The series is worth watching over and over again, something I would not normally do. Wonderful acting and directing.

not my style 1 out of 5 stars.

I loved the Midsomer Murders series (also British), so I thought I might like this. However, the setting is in the inner city slum areas and the star actress is an alcoholic, so the film was extremely depressing. Unless this wouldn't bother you, give it a pass.

Dealing in stereotypes 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

In several of the entries in the "Prime Suspect" series Helen Mirren, as Detective Chief Inspector (later Superintendant) Jane Tennison and the writing have richly deserved all the accolades that have been heaped upon them over nearly twenty years, but that unfortunately is not the case here. This is the only entry besides the first that was written by the series creator Lynda LaPlante, but the writing is extremely weak. This time, Tennison is trying to uncover the truth about a gay pedophilic ring that involves murder, molestation, and child pornography, and all the gay characters Tennison interviews are either delicate victims or monstrous predators (or both). Everything seems lurid and sensationalistic. The director, David Drury, made the ghastly choice to have a boy's choir pipe in incessantly every time Tennison's detectives come across one of the young street hustlers, as if we might forget that innocence has been corrupted. We are also treated to such cliches as fluttery drag queens and menacing AIDS-infected children who inflict deadly bites on the detectives; and it's no good excusing all this by chalking it up to the attitudes of the times, because by 1994 LaPlante truly should have known better. The stereotyping of gay characters is so excessive that in the first episode I knew that there'd have to be at least one suicide attempt among the gay characters: there are no less than three of these, and since two of them seem wildly telegraphed ahead of time in Tennison's immediate proximity she seems like a terrible detective. And she doesn't seem much better as a boss, either, this time around. Usually Tennison must contend with both superiors and subordinates constantly undermining her authority because of her gender, but though her superiors are genuinely out to get her again, here Tennison's underlings seem to be doing the best they can, even though they're constantly being barked at by her for everything imaginable. If you hadn't seen the previous entrants in the series, you'd just think she were just an unpleasant crank.

Mirren, normally an unimpeachable actress, seems to have been done no favors by Drury who allows her to engage in all kinds of distracting bits of "business," like chomping away at her nicotine gum like a house afire to show her distraction and anxiety. David Thewlis, who is also equally talented, also gives a performance that is all tics as the nasty street hustler who is Tennison's prime suspect in the murder of an underage rent boy, and purses his lips over and over again when being interviewed by Tennison and her staff. It's impossible to believe that either he or Ciaran Hinds (here, flat and dull) could deliver any of the menace or charisma needed to keep so many young victims in line. The other actors fare much better, particularly James Frain as a sweet-sad molestation victim and Peter Capaldi as a nervous drag queen. They, and the machinery of the plot, are really all that keeps this production afloat.

Editorial Review:

Detective chief inspector jane tennison moves to a new district and is put in charge of a vice investigation instead of homicide. But soon a homicide case impinges on her new job when a very young male prostitute is murdered in the apartment of vera reynolds a female impersonator. Great stuff. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I give this five stars because of the excellence of the original production. The phrase "lovingly crafted" certainly applies to the Suchet version of Poirot. The supporting cast is outstanding. The only negatives regarding the DVD version are the lack of extras and the sometimes muddled captioning, obviously written by someone not familiar with British terminology from the thirties. For example, the actor may say "five shillings, thrupence," while the captioning will read "five shillings, crumpance," a crude guess indicating not much effort in getting it right.

Superb Poirot 4 out of 5 stars.

Most people seem to agree that David Suchet
is fabulous as Hercule Poirot. He is indeed.
Including the humorous side to this detective.
You will see some of the humor as well as the more
serious side of Poirot. I only wish that some of the
producers had decided to expand on Christie. Namely,
Cat Among the Pigeons and The Third Girl. Christie wrote a lot
of books and there are many fine actors to choose from.
I enjoyed all of these mysteries.

Perfect Poirot,- perpetually personifying perspicacity. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

David Suchet is the quintessential Poirot. It will be a long, long time before anyone will again be able to play the role convincingly, after the superlative portrayal of the splendid Belgium Detective dreamed up by Agatha Christie.

To see Suchet as Poirot, is to believe the character has come alive before your very eyes. None could give the Christie stories more credence, than David Suchet - a consummate actor.

ADORE POIROT 5 out of 5 stars.

I get the biggest kick out of David Suchet's talent and how he has successfully created this whole personality of Poriot. I have been lucky enough to see him perform on the London stage several times & he amazes me. As a result, I just had to have all of the DVD's of this series & I have traveled to some of the locations which are romantized.....escape into the life our grandparents lived & then add a little murder mystery-what more can you ask for!!! ha

Disappointing. 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My particular criticsm of this product is a little different from the other reviews I have read. I dont have any problem with topics, politics, and complaints covered in the episodes, nor am I bothered by the language or nudity. What bothered me is the lack of content. Unlike previous seasons of B.S. this one is quite short (at only 10 episodes), and each episode is only about 25 minutes long. For the topics covered, 25 minutes is barely enough time to introduce the topic, let alone discuss it thoroughly and talk to supporters and detracters. Despite this, many episodes also feature a great deal of filler. Such as the Fat Guy Olympics in an episode about the diet industry, and a blind date sequence in an episode about alternative energy. Gone is the in-depth analysis of supporter`s positions and criticisms of why they are wrong. Instead you get a position, a statement that its wrong, maybe an expert`s input, some filler, and the episodes over just as it is starting to get interesting. Related to the lack of content, there are also two episodes that have summarys on the packaging and on the discs that list things covered in the episode THAT ARE NOT EVEN IN THE EPISODE. In addition, there arent even any extras in the set, none. All this makes me wonder if the episodes got shortened for the DVD release, or if they intended to add additional content but ran out of time. Overall I gave this title 3 stars, but the 1st disc really only deserves 2. I cant really recommend this DVD, even to fans of the show, which is sad because the episodes about the ADA, and Anger Management are pretty good. Rent it, watch it all in one night (quite easy to do), and hope that next season is better.

The viewer really feels like they know the team and clients. DEK has the ability to tell the story with a realistic pen and what better back drop than Boston?
I love this show! I wish they would release more seasons on DVD. Looking forward to the new season of Boston Legal which The Practice created.
