The best show of 2005 that never got a chance. 5 out of 5 stars.

NS was the best inheritor of the X-Files legacy to date, but it never got a chance to get off the ground as it was negatively scheduled and canceled not even half way through the first season. Watch the unaired episodes and you will see how the show was just starting to develop the type of mythos and series-arc that made X-Files and Millennium such compelling shows season after season.

Included is the script of an unproduced Darin Morgan episode! Morgan stories are guaranteed award winners. This series was killed way too soon.

Also, this is the only way to hear the extended version of the unpublished theme music by Philip Glass (it plays over the end credits).

Not another X-Files clone 2 out of 5 stars.

Back when "The X-Files" was at the height of its popularity there was a wave of "X-Files" clones, all with the same central message: the truth is out there, but the Government is trying to hide it. "The Night Stalker" is one such series. Unfortunately, it is not one of the better ones. "The Night Stalker" was cancelled after six episodes (ten were made and all are included in this 2-disc set) and rightly so. The scripts are full of holes, the acting is mediocre and none of the main characters are remotely interesting.

The story revolves around Carl Kolchak (Stuart Townsend), a journalist whose wife was murdered by some sort of monster and Kolchak is now out to discover exactly what happened (and in the process, discovers the truth about a lot of other strange events). This is a remake of a 1970's TV series ("The Night Stalker/The Night Strangler" and "Kolchak: The Night Stalker"), which admittedly didn't run for much longer than this series (only 2 tele-movies and 20 episodes), but which is far superior to this show. Buy the original series instead.

Editorial Review:

As legendary as Sherlock Holmes and Watson, the brilliant, curmudgeonly Nero Wolfe and his dapper sidekick Archie Goodwin use their wit, inventiveness, and flair to solve the most perplexing crimes. His imperious "seventh of a ton" lodged firmly behind his desk, Nero Wolfe rarely leaves his Manhattan brownstone, preferring instead to spend a few hours a day attending to his beloved orchid collection or feasting on the sumptuous meals prepared by his Swiss chef. Archie Goodwin is his stalwart legman, a stylish, street-smart sleuth who uncovers the clues--as well as the bodies--that let Wolfe unravel the most confounding mysteries. Sex, lies, blackmail, and murder are just part of the job when our heroes take on a case. Faithfully adapted from the best-selling novels by Rex Stout and available on DVD for the first time, the complete second season of A&E's critically acclaimed series, NERO WOLFE, stars Maury Chaykin (The Sweet Hereafter) and OscarĀ® winner Timothy Hutton (Ordinary People). DVD Features: Bonus Movie: THE GOLDEN SPIDERS; 16:9 Letterbox version of "The Silent Speaker 1&2"; Bonus Behind-the-Scenes Featurette The Making of Nero Wolfe; Interactive Menus; Scene Selection

Great Show, Bad Visuals 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 14 people found this review helpful.

Great show, bad visuals. Sounds is very clear and crisp.

The reason my rating is low is because the visuals look a bit grainy on my Philips 37" HDTV which is 1080i. Perhaps my settings are not set properly, but the show is great. The visuals are kinda painful to watch compared to some movies I have seen, i.e. Reign Over Me, which looks spectacular.

Safe shopping

great series 4 out of 5 stars.

Im addicted to this show, have every season so far, but this is the first blu ray season to have. I have only watched the first episode, and its hard to compare to the normal dvd without having something to compare to, but its a good picture. Im using my PS3 to play it, so I know there are better blu ray players out there.

Only problem with shipping was that one of the discs inside was loose and sliding around. I don't think it damaged it though, hopefully not.

another great season 5 out of 5 stars.

Educational and funny 5 out of 5 stars.

I liked very much the whole season, these nannies mean business! the show is fun, you get to learn how to better deal with children and after I saw the last episode in which the family has 23 kids it was even inspirational that mom is amazing. However, I need to mention that there's also a book about Nanny 911 that is the exact same thing as the show..so if you purchase this DVD's then don't purchase the book because it has the exact same content.

Editorial Review:

Originally broadcast in 1994, the second season of NYPD Blue was disrupted by the departure of star David Caruso (Detective John Kelly) after just four episodes, under apparently less than amicable circumstances. He was ably replaced as Detective Sipowicz's partner by Jimmy Smits as the smoother Detective Bobby Simone, and the series managed not to miss a beat.

More streamlined and downbeat than its predecessor, Hill Street Blues (also created by Steven Bochco), NYPD Blue continued second time around to mix near-the-knuckle detective work to foil New York's scummiest with more character- and relationship-based drama. Although it's regrettable that its ethnic minority characters, such as Lieutenant Fancy, are increasingly marginalized here, the series is more comfortable--and even has fun--with regular characters such as the nervy Detective Medavoy and his on-off paramour Donna Abandando. Andy Sipowicz's simmering, tough-nosed recovering alcoholic is increasingly and amusingly put to the test in a number of situations, including: a murder investigation in a gay bar; being sung to at his own wedding by Nic Turturro's Detective Martinez; and a love scene in the shower in which we experience the dubious pleasure of seeing his bare rear.

New female introductions, such as the strong but sympathetic Detective Lesniak, also helped to shake up the series with a much-needed estrogen boost. There's also fun to be had in spotting a number of guest appearances by up-and-coming actors destined to make it in their own right such as Richard Schiff and Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) and Debra Messing (Will & Grace).

The DVD set contains a number of extras, primarily a one-hour documentary in which the cast and crew discuss the series episode by episode, the self-congratulatory mood broken only by some subtle digs at departing star David Caruso (apparently, he walked straight off the set following his final take into a waiting limo without any farewells). There's also a small piece paying tribute to the music of theme-writer Mike Post and an item covering the relationship between Sipowicz and Assistant DA Sylvia Costas, in whose marriage this series culminates. --David Stubbs

Editorial Review:

The colorful cast of characters from Cicely, Alaska, returns for a new set of adventures in Northern Exposure: The Complete Second Season. While much of the first season was devoted to establishing the plot, each of the seven episodes in season 2 helps us to know the offbeat ensemble of Cicely residents a little better. Dr. Joel Fleischman (Rob Morrow), the New York urbanite stationed in small-town Alaska to pay off his medical-school tuition, still complains constantly about his assignment, but it's clear the town's growing on him when he passes up an opportunity to return home (if only temporarily). We learn from town patriarch Maurice (Barry Corbin) that retired astronauts have groupies, and when a beautiful woman steals the voice of DJ "Chris in the Morning" (John Corbett), it's no huge surprise when the long-deceased spirit of "One Who Waits" provides Chris with an ancient Indian cure.

But it's the chemistry between Joel and Maggie (Janine Turner) that really makes the series sizzle. The season is book-ended by a pair of breakups that leave first Joel, and then Maggie single, clearing the way for the romance to come in later seasons. The season includes "Spring Break," one of the best-loved episodes from the series. With the impending arrival of spring, libidos run amok, a wave of petty crime hits the town, and the men in town blow off steam au naturale in the annual "Running of the Bulls."

Season 2's packaging and extras are virtually identical to those from season 1. The two-disc set comes sheathed in a collectible mini zippered nylon "parka," and each episode includes deleted scenes and bloopers. There are no retrospectives or interviews with cast and crew, and no printed materials accompany the discs. --Shane Burnett

Editorial Review:

Within the first few minutes of the pilot episode, it's clear what made NYPD Blue stand out from the rest of the cop show pack, as the characters express themselves in startlingly colorful language. This, combined with glimpses of nudity, earned NYPD Blue the reputation as R-rated television--but just about every episode demonstrates the propulsive storytelling and superb ensemble acting that put substance behind the flash. The show revolves around two detectives: Tough, moralistic, but passionate John Kelly (David Caruso) and hair-trigger Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz), who wrestles with booze and racist tendencies. Caruso rose to prominence as the star, but his intensity bleeds too easily into preening self-righteousness; it's Franz, with a much more complex role, who really drives the show.

NYPD Blue's writers skillfully navigate both single-episode criminal cases (ranging from tense procedural sequences like Kelly slowly drawing a confession out of a man who killed a cab driver, to lighter cases like a stolen Oscar statuette) and storylines that stretch dizzily across the entire season. These sustained plots are the real meat of the show: Kelly's hardline ethics are humanized by watching him clumsily come to a professional relationship with his ex-wife Laura (Sherry Stringfield) and work through an affair with Officer Janice Licalsi (Amy Brenneman), who is herself entangled with mobsters; while Sipowicz's near-death in the pilot has repercussions that crop up throughout the series, threatening his sobriety and his developing relationship with a lawyer (Sharon Lawrence)--and then there's his tense relationship with African American Lt. Fancy (James McDaniel), which affords some trenchant looks at racism inside and outside the department. The writing, directing, and acting only gets more subtle and complex as the show goes on, making this set a must for any fan. --Bret Fetzer

Useful Information 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

When I ordered this DVD, I had no clear idea of who was profiled since there was no list on the description page. Here is a list of episodes for season 1.

On Disc 1:
Kasey Kahne
Kyle Busch (there is also brief mention of his brother Kurt, but the main focus is Kyle)
Erin Crocker
Carl Edwards
Steven Wallace (with brief mention of his dad, Rusty)
Greg Biffle
Martin Truex Jr. (with brief mention of Dale Earnhardt Jr.)

On Disc 2:
Brian Vickers
Casey Mears
Richard Childress Racing (primary focus is Clint Bowyer, but Kevin Harvick is also mentioned)
Jamie McMurray
David Stremme/Reed Sorenson (Chip Ganasi Racing rookies)
Joe Gibbs diversity program (specifically Marc Davis, Chris Bristol & Aric Almirola)

Brandon Dean is mentioned in the product description purely because he is the "rookie driver" in the show opening. He is not an actual NASCAR driver.

Hope this is helpful. I know it is information I would have wanted when I was considering buying this DVD.

Does anyone know if there is a second season in the works?
