IF YOU ARE A FAN YOU KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. IF NOT THE STORY LINES ARE LIKE NOTHING YOU HAVE SEEN BEFORE. NOT FOR CHILDREN. SOFT PORN.
SOME SCENES I CANT' WATCH. But I love the stories.

Editorial Review:

Beauty, the saying goes, is only skin deep. The beauty of Nip/Tuck is that it goes deeper, laying bear the complexities and fragile natures often found in patients seeking cosmetic surgery. Dylan Walsh and Julian McMahon portray hotshot Miami South Beach plastic surgeons who are themselves in full-blown midlife crises as they confront career, family and romance problems. The series' cutting-edge stories range from funny to suspenseful to uncommonly powerful. The surgeries are graphically bold. The sexuality is rampant. Presented here in 13 first-season episodes on 5 discs and featuring compelling extras, the highly praised Nip/Tuck is a prescription for entertainment unlike anything you've ever seen.

Editorial Review:

NUMB3RS is a drama about an FBI agent who recruits his mathematical-genius brother to help the Bureau solve a wide range of challenging crimes in Los Angeles. The two brothers take on the most confounding criminal cases from a very distinctive perspective. Inspired by actual events, the series depicts how the confluence of police work and mathematics provides unexpected revelations and answers to the most perplexing criminal questions. A dedicated FBI agent, Don Eppes (Rob Morrow), couldn't be more different from his younger brother, Charlie Eppes (David Krumholtz), a brilliant mathematician who, since he was little, yearned to impress his big brother. Don is joined on his team by fellow agents Megan Reeves (Diane Farr), a behavioral specialist who brings psychological insight to their investigations; David Sinclair (Alimi Ballard), who utilizes his incredible perspective and the survival skills he learned growing up in the Bronx; and new agent Colby Granger (Dylan Bruno) who just completed an extensive tour of duty in the U.S. Military. After some initial reluctance, Don's team welcomes Charlie's innovative methods to crime-solving. Their father, Alan (Judd Hirsch), is happy to see his sons working together even though he doesn't understand the intricacies of what Charlie does for a living. It is his co-workers at CalSci who further refine Charlie's approach and help him stay focused. Physicist friend Dr. Larry Fleinhardt (Peter MacNicol) constantly challenges Charlie to employ a broader point of view to his work with the FBI, and Amita Ramanjuan (Navi Rawat), Charlie's former grad student, frequently helps him see cases in a new light Despite their disparate approaches to life, Don and Charlie are able to combine their areas of expertise and solve some killer cases.

UPDATE: Night Court Season 2 WILL be available Feb. 3!! Make plans to pre-order on Amazon.

OK .. it's time for the 40+ disgruntled Night Court posters on Amazon to rejoice! Apparently, Warner Bros acknowledged Night Court, Season 2 will be available in 2009. Please refer to the following for confirmation

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Night-Court-DVDs-Planned/10532

Caveat: There is NO official announcement from WB, thus the deal is not sealed; caution is advised. However, I've found "tvshowsondvd" to be a very reliable source, and feel optimistic you'll be able to pre-order Season 2 on Amazon within a few months. Hang in there gang ... Judge Harry and Dan Dan Fielding will be back in session soon ... hope there are some great extras with this release, and I hope the Season 3 release follows within one year, not 3+ years as before!!

Release date is February 3, 2009 5 out of 5 stars.

Still Not The Original Series. No Original Music = Dealbreaker 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Those who watched and loved NX on TV know how integral the music was to the story. Each episode came with music as unique and endearing as the writing. These DVDs are but a mere shadow of the original production.

When I heard about this re-release box set of the entire series, I got excited . . . until I learned nothing had changed with the audio.

I can't imagine the royalty situation would be so difficult to fix, but at this late date I doubt anyone will ever release the true originals in DVD format. For me, these DVDs might as well have been overdubbed in Chinese.

Characters, storylines still great but missing original music 5 out of 5 stars.

NE is arguably the best tv series ever created so even with the music tampering I have to give it five stars. Every character is multifaceted and distinctive. Even the guest stars were carefully chosen to fit in with Cicely's quirky inhabitants (my favorites are Adam and Eve and Officer Semanski). The original music was a perfect fit as well and its a shame its been replaced. Universal is out of touch with customers on this one and I'd gladly pay the extra bucks to have everything intact. The excellent moosechick.com site dedicated to all things NE offers more insight into the music situation. For those who don't mind the substitutions this set is fine -you still have the great story lines and characters. Thankfully, for the rest of us there are some fully original episodes still available on VHS tape.

Northern Exposure - The Complete First and Second Seasons 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Northern Exposure - The Complete First and Second Seasons The shows are as remembered and I like the packaging, but the DVDs have some problems. Several of them are mislabeled, either on the box, on the DVD or on the actual picture. Once I figured that out by looking at my own list of episodes, it was no problem but I found it to be a quality problem. I now own the entire series and these problems were fixed in the later episodes.

Love this series! 5 out of 5 stars.

When a young doctor from New York has his tuition to medical school paid for by the state of Alaska he's thrilled, but that's before he flies out to honor his end of the contract. He must practice for four years in what he thinks is going to be the larger city of Anchorage, but is shipped instead to the small, bizarre and rustic town of Cicely, Alaska. He's less than thrilled with the town, or its bizzare citizens, but there's no way out of his contract. A humorous look at a 'fish out of water' story who must learn to adapt to his surroundings...quickly!

Not as Good as It Will Get 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

When you look back to a series you remember fondly from a few years ago, you remember mostly the last seasons. In the case of Newhart (and also of Barney Miller), the first season is not as good as the subsequent seasons. This is primarily because of the first season cast. Jennifer Holmes, as Leslie Vanderkellen, student/maid, is pretty & charming & sweet. And also forgettable. When Julia Duffy, as her sassy, conceited cousin Stephanie Vanderkellen, joins the cast, she brings a sparkle and a spice to the show that Jennifer just couldn't achieve.

Steven Kampmann is attractive but the character of Kirk is not well written. He does grow on me as the season progresses, and I will probably miss him when he leaves at the end of season 2, but he's not Peter Scolari.

And of course there's very little of Larry, his brother Daryl, and his other brother Daryl in season 1--only 2 appearances. As I watched these shows, I kept wondering where they were.

The writing has always been good, and the performances by Bob Newhart, Mary Frann, and Tom Poston were right on target. But season 1 is a work in progress. From then on, it just gets better. Please, please release the subsequent seasons.

Review from down under 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Just buy the complete series. It's like watching exquisite performances, you cannot watch more than an episode without feeling satisfied, and not being short changed. They also follow the original Stout stories almost exactly.
This was first shown in Australia on our national broadcaster in the earlier part of this decade. It is clear that the production values, including music scores and attention to details exceed those of the BBC in the same sort of period stuff (like the Poirot series with Suchet). The DVDs are excellent in terms of technical qaulity and play on universal players here.
If you have the money, just buy it.

Editorial Review:

Like Sherlock Holmes and Watson before them, the brilliant but curmudgeonly Nero Wolfe and his streetwise sidekick Archie Goodwin are crime's greatest nemeses. With Nero preferring to solve crimes at home amid his orchid collection, it is Archie who does the legwork about town to allow Wolfe to unravel the most confounding crimes. Together the duo cracks cases of murder, deception, blackmail, and more, resulting in an unforgettable confection of mystery, suspense, and style.

Faithfully adapted from the best-selling stories by Rex Stout, THE COMPLETE NERO WOLFE MEGASET stars Maury Chaykin (The Sweet Hereafter) and Oscar(r) winner Timothy Hutton (Ordinary People) and features all 20 episodes of the critically acclaimed A&E series, including the feature-length series pilot, The Golden Spiders.

Plastic surgeons Sean McNamara and Christian Troy have vowed to make whole the victims of the elusive, mysterious serial slasher called the Carver. But mending the rifts in their own families and careers will require much more than their famed technical skills. Dylan Walsh and Julian McMahon return for a sensational Season 3 filled with eroticism, suspense and medical challenges ranging from a daring facial transplant to a 650-pound woman whose skin has fused with her sofa. There's a new doctor on staff, too: Dr. Quentin Costa, a tango expert and perhaps an expert at dissecting the practice for his own ends. Plus: Julia launches a new career, troubled Matt falls in with skinheads and the Carver turns out to be.... Sorry, our lips are sealed. Watch and find out.

Sad, a Crash Landing 2 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Never having watched the show when it originally aired I became entirely addicted to the DVD sets, and have blissfully devoured them all. For my money Northern Exposure is the second greatest TV series in the history of the medium, second only to The Fugitive.

I avoided watching the final season due to the dreadful comments of many Amazon reviewers but I finally gave in... and I'm sorry I did.

There are many specific problems and one that's more ethereal.

First, replacing Dr. Fleischman with another doctor whose attitudes, inability to adjust and general whininess exactly mirror his predecessor was a foolish move. It's hard to imagine the creative team who gave birth to this brilliant show making this decision - it reeks of one mandated by clueless studio executives.

Second, Paul Provenza as the new doctor and whoever as his wife, under the blanket of a dead script, create characters who could put a speed freak to sleep. Dull as dishwater and at times immensely aggravating.

Third, the entire cast seems to have had the wind taken out of their sails. Many are walking through their roles. Marilyn's usual stoney simplicity which for five seasons was cleverly rendered and at time hilarious in the final season now becomes shockingly boring. Too often season six has what the others never did - BAD acting.

Fourth, the reliance on fantasy, dreams, illusions, etc. is wildly overworked. The season opener's recasting of the characters in New York is clever and it entertains. But let's drop it there, please. Watching Provenza at one point turn into a werewolf while his wife serves him dinner is beyond painful. It's not clever. It's stupid.

The harder to pin down problem is that the magic is gone. The indescribable mix of sharp writing and quirky charm that makes Northern Exposure so unique is entirely absent. One always had the feeling that the characters loved each other. There's no love in these scripts.

If you feel like I do that there was always some fairy dust sprinkled on the streets of Cicely... you'll find that every bit of that dust has blown away...

Editorial Review:

Recipient of 39 Emmy nominations and winner of the Emmy and Golden Globe Awards for Outstanding Drama Series, Northern Exposure comes to an offbeat and inspirational conclusion. For this final season, newcomer Dr. Phil Capra (Paul Provenza) joins Dr. Joel Fleischman (Emmy nominee Rob Morrow), Maggie (Emmy nominee Janine Turner), Chris (Emmy nominee John Corbett) and the rest of the quirky citizens of Cicely, Alaska. Digitally restored for optimum picture quality, this must-own five-disc set includes all 23 beloved episodes and over 30 minutes of never-before-seen deleted scenes. See the finale of this groundbreaking, heartwarming adventure that's as stunning as the Northern Lights themselves!

Very, very funny! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was searching for a new show and "The new adventures of old Christine" was on sale on Amazon.com. I don't live in the US and I have never heard about it however, I decided to buy it. The pilot episode is not so good but the second one is very funny. I kept watching it and I discovered that it is a very, very funny show. My favorite episodes are number 12 "Some of my Best Friends are Portuguese" and 13 "A Fair to Remember", they are hilarious. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and all the cast are doing a great job!

Editorial Review:

Now, there's a kick in the self-confidence: Single working mom Christine Campbell has just learned that her ex is dating a much-younger woman with the same first name. To avoid any confusion, everyone calls one woman New Christine and the other Old Christine. You can guess which is which. Julia Louis-Dreyfus' hilarious and insightful performance in the title role won fans and earned her the 2006 Emmy as Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Christine struggles to hold it together as she adjusts to her new nickname, confronts the meanie moms at her son's private school, jumps back in the dating pool with a post-bikini bodÄand gets laughs every misstep of the way. You go, -old" girl!
