Excellent Selection of the Best Comedy Show of the 1950's 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

There were funnier shows in the 1950's, "Abbott and Costello," "I Love Lucy" (from 1952-1955), "Milton Berle," "Honeymooners" and "I Married Joan," but these only lasted, or were funny, for two or three years, "The Jack Benny Show" lasted amazingly from 1950 till 1965. From this collection, a good selection from many of these years, it is clear that the Jack Benny show was consistently funny for all those years.

This is the best collection on the market. Even the ones that are no longer very funny (about 1/4 of the episodes) are fascinating to watch for what they tell us about the times.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the show today is the relationship between Eddie Anderson (Rochester) and Jack Benny. There is a genuine affection between the two performers that made for a silent but clear anti-racist message for the time.

One should be warned that there are a lot of Luck Strike commercials included (about 20). They are incredibly effective and even today can have you wanting to run out and buy a pack for the "great taste."

Hopefully, someone will put out a complete year by year collection some day. Until then, this collection is the best we have.

This is the second season in this interesting British mystery series. Very unconventional but good stories and some really enjoyable characters.

Jonathan Creek-Season Two 5 out of 5 stars.

I've never enjoyed a British series as much as this one with two such unique main characters. I wish they had made more "Jonathan Creek" series!!

The Magic of Johnathan Creek 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Johnathan Creek is a funny mystery series with colorful characters. The twist is that Johnathan,(Alan Davies) who lives in an old windmill and designs tricks for a magician, solves crimes by figuring out how the impossible was possible. He is an intellectual, a logical and patient companion to Caroline Quentins disheveled character , an erstwhile crime writer. She is always late, and wildly disorganized and constantly stuffing her face with anything edible. Sexual tension comes into play in a comedic fashion and is never brought to any fulfillment. Nice for the family.

Such garbage - I LOVE IT! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I first met Alan Davies on the Stephen Fry comedy "QI" - a comedy game show where Alan shows his true colors: a clown and a twit. So when I first watched Jonathan Creek I assumed he'd be the sidekick. Nope. He's the ultra-brilliant detective. This series is full of wit and charm and never takes itself too seriously. The puzzles are utterly implausible, but the charm is in watching Jonathan Creek reluctantly get sucked into solving them more than how he does it. The Englishism "most delightful" is a perfect description for this series!

Smallville without the monsters... 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I like Skeet Ulrich and, seduced by nice box design, I had high hopes for this series. Which weren't exactly dashed, but it didn't really deliver either.

The box is stickered-up (in the UK) with "LOST" comparisons but, frankly, other than it being survivor orientated nothing else is remotely similar. The 'mystery' somehow lacks much interest. I found that I never really cared about who had blown-up the cities and, in fact, it's pretty much revealed halfway in. It lacks the surrealism of Lost, with its weird non-sequiturs and bizarre coincidences and, most importantly, it lacks Lost's fabulously diverse, if frequently irritating, characters. It simply does not have the intensity or charge of that programme.

If I was to compare it to anything I'd say it was more like Smallville, but without the monster of the week and the special powers. It has that same homely small-town feeling, and the romances and in-family bickering are very reminiscent, with Jake's parents being a sort of real-life equivalent of Jonathan & Martha. I found that while a few characters were likeable (the IRS Mimi, Jake himself, Dale, and, best of all, Hawkins) there wasn't really much to compel you through it.

It's relatively 'realistic', for TV, but there were still little aggravations, like everyone burning upwards of 30 candles at any one time in their living rooms and none of them old stubs. Always lovely fresh new candles every time. How many candles would a small town have? With every family burning 30 a night, and an average of three days or so as a maximum burn time for a pillar candle, I reckon they should have run out in the second week. Likewise they were always b*tching about petrol (gas), but no-one ever hesitated to jump into a vehicle and dash off. And don't even start me on the tank, which they had in a barn and didn't pull out to use till the last minute, even although they were under threat of imminent invasion.

These things could have been overlooked if it had offered more intrigue but, bordering on pedestrian as it was, it only served to highlight the series' failure to engage. Good enough, but not great. And life's too short to watch something that isn't great.

Editorial Review:

JERICHO is a drama about what happens when a nuclear mushroom cloud suddenly appears on the horizon, plunging the residents of a small, peaceful Kansas town into chaos, leaving them completely isolated and wondering if they're the only Americans left alive. But in this time of crisis, as sensible people become paranoid, personal agendas take over and well-kept secrets threaten to be revealed, some people will find an inner strength they never knew they had and the most unlikely heroes will emerge.

Great Classic Show! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The first season of the Jeffersons starts out great! I can see why this show lasted for 11 years on television. Excellent Series by Norman Lear and a great spin-off too! The Jeffersons are a classic by themselves and I enjoy each character espically Louise, George, and Florence. I am glad that to on it on DVD.

Take me back! 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

P.G. Wodehouse's much-loved stories about Bertie Wooster and his brilliantly clever valet, Jeeves, were brought faithfully to life in Jeeves and Wooster, starring Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry as master and servant. The scripts of this perfectly cast production retain all the sparkling wit of Wodehouse's prose, and it's hard to see how any future adaptation of his work could surpass this wonderfully funny series.

This boxed set contains the entire first season of Jeeves and Wooster. In "Jeeves Takes Charge," young man-about-town Bertie Wooster employs a new valet called Jeeves, and not a moment too soon. Thanks to his Aunt Agatha, Bertie faces the terrible prospect of marriage to the statuesque Honoria Glossop, and only Jeeves can save the day. "Tuppy and the Terrier" finds Bertie in trouble again when he loses Aunt Agatha's dog. Further aunt-related complications arise when Bertie's chum Tuppy falls for our hero's cousin Angela. Aunt Dahlia is not amused. An uncle in love with a waitress, a trip to the country, a speedy choirboy, and a secret betting syndicate all lead to trouble in "The Purity of the Turf." Jeeves, of course, is the only one who can put things right.

Jeeves and Wooster really hits its stride in the final episodes of the first series, "The Hunger Strike" and "Brinkley Manor." When Bertie visits Aunt Dahlia, he is called upon to solve the romantic problems of his friends Tuppy Glossop (in love with cousin Angela) and the delightful Gussy Fink-Nottle (in love with Madeleine Basset, a young lady who believes the stars to be God's daisy chain.) Unwisely, Bertie decides to cook up his own plan and before long disaster strikes. Aunt Dahlia's superb chef Anatole gives his notice, and Bertram is to blame. Thank goodness for Jeeves. --Simon Leake

After Patientently Waiting For Four Years, It's Finally Here! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

First of all, I'd like to thank the studio for releasing this excellent sitcom. I say it's better late than never even though I had given up hope that the rest of the seasons would be released. The first two seasons were released back in 2004 which pleased all us die hard 'Just Shoot Me' fans, but then no more releases came out and then the next release was cancelled for some unknown reason and we've been eagerly anticipating this moment ever since, even though it really didn't seem like it would happen.

Now onto the actual season, this is one of the funniest shows in the history of TV, and this offering showcases that perfectly. It stars Enrico Colantoni as Elliot DiMauro, Blush magazine's photographer extraordinaire and classic playboy. George Segal stars as Blush magazine's affable, obstinate and somewhat clueless owner and boss, Jack Gallo. Laura San Giacomo is great as Jack's daughter Maya, who works as an editor for the magazine. Then there's Dennish Finch portrayed by the actor/comedian David Spade of SNL fame, everybody's loveable troublemaker and smart alec who's always scheming to land dates or play a prank on his co-workers. Last but not least we have Nina Van Horn as the effervescent, vapid, superficial yet kind fashion editor played by Wendie Malick of 'Baywatch' fame. Together this ensemble cast provides uproarious moments of laughter on a consistent basis. This season has one of the best episodes out of the entire series, which is episode 10 entitled 'How the Finch Stole Christmas'. It's perfect for the holidays so it's too bad that this is not being released until February, but at least it will be there for next year's Christmas. The third season has the following episodes:

Season 3, Episode 1: What the Teddy Bear Saw: Great episode. Finch commits a serious faux pas by sleeping with Jack's nanny, and Maya joins a cult after being neglected by Elliot.

Season 3, Episode 2: Steamed: Jack Gallo decides to take over the office upstairs in order to turn it into a day-care center.

Season 3, Episode 3: The Mask: Finch tricks Maya into wearing a ridiculous costume to the office Halloween party.

Season 3, Episode 4: Funny Girl: Maya teaches Elliot and Finch a lesson when they tell her that women don't know how to pull off a good practical joke.

Season 3, Episode 5: Two Girls for Every Boy: In order to fulfill one of his fantasies, Finch concocts an elaborate plan to set up a date between Maya and another woman who has the hots for Maya.

Season 3, Episode 6: The Withholder: Elliot plots to help out Finch whose girlfriend hasn't been very kind to him.

Season 3, Episode 7: Puppetmaster: Maya's new boyfriend is the seemingly kind host of a children's TV show, but as she watches his show she realizes that he may not be quite as wonderful as she initially thought.

Season 3, Episode 8: The List: Jack is disappointed that he's not featured in a prominent magazine listing that's soon to be published, which beckons him to harass Maya to make sure he's included. Meanwhile, Finch is pestering his idol Mark Hamill of Star Wars fame.

Season 3, Episode 9: How Nina Got Her Groove Back: Nina develops a growing rivalry with a competing fashion expert after their catfight hits the newspapers.

Season 3, Episode 10: How the Finch Stole Christmas: Finch turns into the Christmas grinch and decides to ruin Christmas around the office after he finds out that his co-workers' presents to him were less than stellar.

Season 3, Episode 11: Slow Donnie: One of the best episodes. Maya suspects that Elliot's younger brother isn't really mentally challenged.

Season 3, Episode 12: A Spy in the House of Me: Maya's ex-boyfriend comes into town to sweep her off her feet, but Jack is less than impressed and tries to break up their relationship.

Season 3, Episode 13: Lies & Dolls: Nina tarnishes her relationship with a politician after gloating about her supposed culinary skills. Finch finds out that Elliot has a doll made after the TV show 'The Six Million Dollar Man'.

Season 3, Episode 14: Nina Sees Red: Part 1: Finch is distraught after he learns that Nina is dating his recently divorced father.

Season 3, Episode 15: Nina Sees Red: Part 2: Finch's dad and Nina decide to get married, despite Dennis' objections.

Season 3, Episode 16: Hostess to Murder: Maya hosts a murder-mystery party similar to the board game 'Clue', unfortunately her neighbor meets his untimely demise while confronting Maya at this party and problems ensue.

Season 3, Episode 17: Toy Story: Finch decides to be a prankster by switching Elliot's birthday presents given to him by Maya and a male co-worker, which leads to hilarious confusion.

Season 3, Episode 18: Miss Pretty: Elliot disrespects an important client of Asian descent and the new advice columnist creates quite the shock to the Blush staff.

Season 3, Episode 19: Maya's Nude Photos: Maya's photography teacher asks her to take some nude shots of herself, which leads to Elliot convincing Maya that her teacher only wants her nude pictures for his own personal gain.

Season 3, Episode 20: And the Femmy Goes To...: The annual fashion awards show causes the staff to become upset with Jack who is only interested in beating the magazine's rival.

Season 3, Episode 21: Softball: The staff plays softball against rival company softball teams and they discover that Maya is their best player.

Season 3, Episode 22: Shaking Private Trainer: Jack hires a personal trainer to get into shape, but finds that he can't deal with the constant pressure to diet and exercise so he finds a way to end his training prematurely.

Season 3, Episode 23: Nina's Choice: Nina has to choose between an escaped convict who's her ex and the fed who's chasing the criminal.

Season 3, Episode 24: The Odd Couple: Part 1: Finch falls in love with a super-model played by Rebecca Romijin-Stamos.

Season 3, Episode 25: The Odd Couple: Part 2: Finch gets engaged to the supermodel while Maya grows suspicious of the relationship. The super-model's ex causes problems for Finch.

I highly recommend this show to newcomers as well, especially if you enjoy zany, goofy and at times serious sitcoms, then this show will not disappoint. For all of us longtime fans, we can look forward to enjoying those moments of levity that spanned the entire run of this series. There's no other show quite like it, hence I've been sorely missing it since it went off the air, so I am overjoyed that at least one more season is making its debut on DVD.

Not for Children 1 out of 5 stars.

I would rate this as a PG13 to R -for TV viewing, based on the heavy inferences in the dialog. I purchased this after viewing the Brisco County Jr. series that Bruce Campbell was in. I looked forward to his action filled - Family rated - style from Brisco. I couldn't have been more disappointed. The inferences are about what you'd hear on teen-age "B" movies.

Campbell kicks Emperial Butt 5 out of 5 stars.

This series is so much fun I have watched it about 3 times through back to back. It is really a shame it didn't make it a few more seasons. It is one of those lost treasures that just didn't find its audience until it was too late. Campbell is at top form in this charming and fun adventure series.

A fun slap stick/ tongue in cheek series. Well done, with the subtle innuendos and that classic Bruce Campbell swagger.
It is just sad that didn't continue the series but at least we got this.

In 1801, the revolution had been won, and uncle Sam's favorite son... 5 out of 5 stars.

Although the locale for the series is odd, the stories and characters are funny and memorable. Bruce Campbell is entertaining as always. He has excellent chemistry with his costar who is a great pairing with his character. There is practically no historical accuracy in the series, which lends to its humor. If you enjoyed Campbell in Hercules and Xena, you'd probably like this series also.

Keep them coming! 5 out of 5 stars.

There are very few shows that I actually want to fork out the cash to watch reruns of. JAG is one of them!!! :D There is nothing I feel I can't be comfortable with any member of my family seeing. This show gives a good idea of military life with out feeling like you are getting the "propaganda shuffle" every time you watch an episode. There are just enough shots of truly clever humor to balance out what can often be very serious, scary, and often tragic, situations. I hope they just keep the seasons coming which (so far) it looks like they are doing!JAG (Judge Advocate General) - The Sixth SeasonJAG (Judge Advocate General) - The Fifth Season

Luckily the dollar is low for "us" Europeans and this dvd was also interestingly priced for "us" europeans so we could buy it without the xtra import tax :-).

Despite any special features, this stays a landmark in comedy. Not yet avaible in Europe I bought it in the States.

Lots of laughs and great acting.

A must have if your from the Archy Bunker generation.
