At last -- Inspector Morse's first novel comes to video! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Inspector Morse is cerebral, almost an armchair decetcive in the Sherlock Holmes tradition. This video is based on the first Morse novel, but came about halfway through the series' run on ITV. John Thaw is notable in his performance because he almost underplays the role of Morse, and Kevin Whatley as Sergeant Lewis makes a good Watson, trying to understand Morse's thought process, and providing a lens through which us viewers of merely average intellect can comprehend how Morse's mind works. This will never appeal to a general audience, but it's very enjoyable to those at whom it's targeted.

Love and Lust 4 out of 5 stars.

This episode revolves around three women. The first owns a home and is the land lady of the other two. Number one is an office manager, having an affair with one of the married executives with whom she works. Number two is a nurse who is having an affair with a professor at one of Oxford's colleges. The third is a student at Oxford and is being "chatted up" by one of the English Literature instructors. These are three separate stories and at no time intertwine; a fourth girl is picked up, hitchhiking in the rain, on the Woodstock Road, by one of the previous mentioned men. Shortly thereafter she is dead. Given these facts, this is one difficult investigation for Morse. There is none of the frequent surprises or twists to further complicate the investigation; Morse has enough on his hands. Max the pathologist plays his largest part in any of his appearances. A solid four star effort.

An excellent introduction to the Inspector Morse series. 5 out of 5 stars.

An Amazon.com reviewer of July 10th has written a superb review of this episode of the extensive series of Morse mysteries and I won't go over ground that he or she has ably covered. For those viewers who are convinced by his/her review to begin watching the Morse mysteries with The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn, I would like to add that the mystery begins with the opening credits.

We are introduced to the deaf Nicholas Quinn, an examiner at a Board based in Oxford, England. He is standing by himself reading the lips of the various people talking with one another at a wine party. We see the obvious concern on his face that something is desperately wrong, but, like him, we can't hear what many of the guests are saying. He does not need to hear; his facility reading lips is evident. He tells another reviewer that the examinations conducted by the Board are compromised and he walks out of the party in distress.

In the next scene, still while the credits are playing, we watch a fire drill at the Examining Board. We don't see Nicholas Quinn leave the building even though we are told that everyone is accounted for. If you watch this scene a second time carefully, many of the clues to unlock the mystery are contained in this first few minutes of the program.

My guess is that most people who view this mystery like solving complicated puzzles and will enjoy watching each clue that Morse uncovers right to the last scene.

John Thaw, unfortunately now dead, was a superb English actor and he found an ideal character to play in the crusty Chief Inspector Morse. Kevin Whately is almost equally as good as his long suffering sidekick, Sergeant Lewis. Viewers who like this early installment will have a chance to watch Morse and Lewis in action many more times in this outstanding and long running series.

The gruesome murder of a country farmer is a puzzling case, but it’s Inspector Lynley’s new partner, Sergeant Barbara Havers (Sharon Small, About a Boy), who’s proving indecipherable. Despite being mirror opposites, this marriage made at police headquarters must thrive in order to solve a heinous crime. Then, Inspector Lynley and Srgt. Havers, the most celebrated British detective duo in years, return, employing cunning, intuition, and street smarts to unravel some of the most heinous—and suspenseful—crimes. Despite their obvious differences, the sleuths are evolving into a potent team, deciphering four more tantalizing mysteries:Well-Schooled In Murder, Payment in Blood, For The Sake Of Elena, and Missing Joseph. And finally, Nathaniel Parker returns as Inspector Lynley, in the latest series of mysteries, Playing for the Ashes, In the Presence of the Enemy, A Suitable Vengeance, and Deception on His Mind.

Intriguing. Suspenseful. Twisting. Vengeful. 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

In "The Day of the Devil" we find our self-assured bachelor, Inspector Morse, confronted with a serial rapist and murderer who escapes the mental hospital. To make matters worse, this criminal is also a master of disguise, resourceful, and deadly. After abducting an innocent housewife, he begins to make his demands on the police and Inspector Morse.

Morse's sleuthing is consistently frustrated by the murderer who remains one step ahead of him at every turn. But as he and Lewis methodically follow the trail of evidence and build their case, another set of facts and relationships begin to emerge. There are accomplices and help from unexpected sources.

The writers dismiss the issues of devil-worship and the occult as they toy with the theme in this episode. The mysterious quickly gives way to the ridiculous and for an uncharacteristic moment, the plot becomes sloppy and poorly written.

All in all, though, this is an interesting episode in an engaging series.

We also like the episode where Lucy and Ethyl got a job in the chocolate factory, they didnt keep up and stuffed their mouths full of candy , down the clothes, in the hats. There will be no other in this world to entertain like her. We all love Lucy.

I purchased this set for my daughter's 18th birthday and she absolutely loves it. I grew up on this show and it is so wonderful to hear her laughing out loud with lucy and the gangs antics. Just a good old fashion and a classic comedy show to watch over and over. Lucille Ball will be in our hearts forever.

Enjoy the DVD's, my daughter is.

A Greek Tragedy 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

A childless couple, who host television shows, profess to have the ideal marriage which has now lasted fifteen years. The husband, who also has filmed documentaries, has been off to Greece recently to do one on ancient Greek war ships. On this particular trip, his wife did not accompany him. Upon his return, a Greek chef is murdered - later in the episode a young Greek woman, the chef's sister, is also murdered using the same M.O. A gentleman building a theme park in Britain, which will include full replicas of the Greek navel ships, and a Greek restaurant mogul are suspects. Along with the murders we find blackmail and kidnapping. You must bear down when viewing this entry as it is somewhat involved. Morse must do the same, but of course he ultimately unearths the culprit. This is quite a good four star effort.

A wonderful DVD set of a great show 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This 2 DVD set contains seven selected episodes of what I consider to be one of the best TV dramas of all time. Disc One contains the two part episode, "Split Second To An Epitaph". According to the paper inserted inside the DVD holder, both parts originally aired on the same night, September 26, 1968. The clever way the wheelchair bound detective (played by Raymond Burr) foils his kidnappers in the October 24, 1968 episode, "Desperate Encounter", on Disc Two, makes a great payoff for the viewer. For those who can't afford the entire second season, this set is well worth the purchase and well worth the time watching.

Why is there a season 2, AND a Season 2 vol 1? 4 out of 5 stars.

Are there different episodes depending on the DVD? Since I already bought Season 2, is there a reason why I need to buy this one too?

A complicated mystery for amateur sleuths to solve. 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

Deceived by Flight is one of author Colin Dexter's favorite televised Morse mysteries. Having seen at least twenty or so of these fine programs, I agree with his judgement.

The performances are uniformly excellent; not just Morse, played reliably and well by the fine actor, John Thaw, but also the supporting cast, particularly Kevin Whately as his able assistant, Sergeant Lewis, and Sharon Maughan as Kate Donn, television hostess and wife of slain barrister Anthony Donn. The plot is complicated and the clues are difficult for even Morse to decipher. Apparently Anthony Donn has committed suicide on the eve of his participation in a cricket match at Oxford. Morse doubts that his old friend deliberately killed himself and begins questioning suspects. As we soon find out, much more is at stake in this mystery than the death of an aging cricket player.

Cricket is part of the fun of this mystery. Much time is spent discussing the sport (Morse would prefer to listen to his music) and we also get to see it played. Sergeant Lewis goes undercover as a porter and expert batsman. At the matches another murder takes place and now Morse must try to determine if there are connections between the two deaths.

I think most viewers who watch the Morse series of films like to put their detective caps on and follow the clues carefully to see if they can arrive at the answers before Morse. Deceived by Flight will keep even the best armchair detectives struggling with clues until the satisfying conclusion of this fine program.

Morse at his best, part two 5 out of 5 stars.
23 of 26 people found this review helpful.

The Inspector Morse series is one of the greatest in detective drama. While Colin Dexter's books are marvels of intricate (and occasionally bizarre) plot twists, the movies focus more on the characters involved...and in this movie (and "Who Killed Harry Field") especially so. The mystery is good, but the kinship between Morse and chief suspect Michael Steppings is best thing about this particular episode. It's one of those great films where the bad guys and good guys seem to have reversed roles, and the whole mystery hinges on one small slip...#2 on the list of the five greatest Morses!

revenge and retribution 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the finest Morse episodes for a number of reasons. One characteristic of this entry is that the viewer is exposed to a number of false leads and to elements of evidence which either point to criminality or to innocence-- only to find that the seemingly obvious conclusions yielded by the evidence have been premature and inaccurate. The plot basically involves the possibility that a wealthy man, whose daughter suffered irreversible brain damage during a minor operation, has decided to take vengeance on the medical personnel involved in the surgery. When the surgeon who performed the operation is found dead in his own garage, the grief stricken father (Michael Steppings) becomes a prime suspect in the murder case. As the investigation unfolds, we learn that there are two or three other people, including the surgeon's wife and son, who had a possible motive to murder the good doctor. In the final analysis, the viewer is exposed to a premeditated and carefully constructed plot to inveigle the police and to destroy the lives and/or reputations of those involved in the botched surgical procedure. Naturally, he who would seek to take vengeance on others must be prepared for the possibility that he, himself, will suffer some form of retribution. The end is predictable-- with the architect of the diabolical revenge scheme experiencing "justice" rendered by one of his intended victims. As played by Brian Cox, the character of Michael Steppings is someone we are forced to sympathize with, even if we cannot condone the measures he takes to punish the medical malefactors. In this episode, even Morse displays a level of emotional involvement which is unusual. Two murders are solved in this episode, with one solution aided by a small detail (a scene in a painting) which does not escape the shrewd analysis of Inspector Morse. All things considered, this really is one of the best entries in the Morse series and is characterized by outstanding performances in the lead roles.
