UNIQUE POLICE DRAMA IN THE TROPICS 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Hawaii Five-O is an American television series that starred Jack Lord and James MacArthur as detectives for a fictional Hawaii state police department. The show ran for 12 seasons, from 1968 to 1980, making it the longest running crime show on American television until the police drama Law & Order surpassed it in 2003. The twelfth season was repackaged into syndication under the title McGarrett.

The CBS television network produced the program from September 20, 1968 to April 5, 1980. Currently, the program is broadcast in syndication throughout the world and on-demand streaming media via CBS Interactive.[1] Created by Leonard Freeman, Hawaii Five-O was shot on location in Honolulu, Hawaii, and throughout the island of Oahu -- with occasional filming in other locales like Los Angeles, Singapore and Hong Kong as well as other Hawaiian islands.

Hawaii Five-O centers on a fictional state police force (named in honor of Hawaii's status as the 50th State)[2] led by former Navy officer Steve McGarrett (Jack Lord), who was appointed by the Governor Paul Jameson (Richard Denning). McGarrett was assisted regularly by State Police officers -- a young officer, Danny Williams (played with intensity by Tim O'Kelley in the show's pilot, but replaced in the regular series by James MacArthur), Chin Ho Kelly (Kam Fong) and Kono Kalakaua (Zulu). Later, Honolulu Police Department Officer Duke Lukela (Herman Wedemeyer) joined the team as a regular, as did Ben Kokua (Al Harrington) who replaced Kono. Occasionally, they were assisted by other officers on an "as-needed" basis. During the course of the show, the team was also assisted regularly by: medical examiner Doc Bergman (Al Eben), forensic specialist Che Fong (Harry Endo) and a secretary. The first secretary was May (Maggi Parker), then Jenny (Peggy Ryan) and later Luana (Laura Sode-Matteson).

For twelve seasons, McGarrett and his team hounded international secret agents, criminals, and Mafia syndicates plaguing the Hawaiian Islands. With the aid of District Attorney and later Hawaii's Attorney General John Manicote (Glenn Cannon), McGarrett was successful in sending most of his enemies to prison. One such Mafia syndicate was led by crime family patriarch Honore Vashon (Harold Gould), a character introduced in the fifth season. Blaming McGarrett for the death of his son, Vashon swore vengeance using all of the resources available to him. Most episodes of Hawaii Five-O ended with the arrest of criminals with McGarrett's catch phrase to Williams, "Book 'em, Danno!", with the offense occasionally added after this phrase, such as "-Murder one!". Other criminals and organized crime bosses on the islands were played by actors such as Ricardo Montalban, Gavin MacLeod, and Ross Martin as Tony Alika. For the 12th and final season, series regular James MacArthur had left the show (in 1996, he admitted he had got tired and wanted to do other things), as did Kam Fong after season 10. New characters Jim 'Kimo' Carew (William Smith), Lori Wilson (Sharon Farrell), and Truck (Moe Keale) were introduced in season 12 alongside returning regular Duke Lukela.

The Five-O team consisted of four to five members (small for a real state police unit) and was portrayed as occupying a suite of offices in the Iolani Palace. (The office interiors were a soundstage set.) Curiously, it lacked its own radio network, necessitating frequent requests by McGarrett to the Honolulu Police Department dispatchers to "Patch me through to Danno". McGarrett's tousled yet immovable hairstyle and proclivity for wearing a dark suit and tie on all possible occasions rapidly entered popular culture.

In many episodes (including the pilot), McGarrett was drawn into the world of international espionage and national intelligence. McGarrett's archnemesis was an intelligence officer of the People's Republic of China, Wo Fat. The Communist rogue agent was played by veteran actor Khigh Dheigh.

The show's action and straightforward story-telling left little time for personal stories such as wives and girlfriends, though a two-part story in the first season dealt with the loss of McGarrett's sister's baby. Occasionally, a show would flash back to McGarrett's younger years or to a romantic figure. The viewer is left with the impression that McGarrett, like Dragnet's Joe Friday, is wedded to the police force and to crime-fighting at this point in his life.

Hawaii Five-O survived long enough to see reruns of early episodes enter syndication while new episodes were still being produced. The 12th season was repackaged into syndication under the title McGarrett.
The show was the longest running crime show on American TV until the police drama Law & Order surpassed it in 2003. The popularity of the Hawaii Five-O format spawned various police dramas on all the major television networks since its debut. Another legacy is the popularity of the Hawaii Five-O theme song, composed by Morton Stevens and later covered by surf music band The Ventures and by Radio Birdman, a punk-era band from Sydney. A short cover can be seen at the end of the Massacre Palestina's song, "Madamme X". The song is particularly popular with college and high school marching bands, especially at the University of Hawai'i, where it has become the unofficial fight song. It also made a brief appearance in the animated film Shrek 2, when a trumpeter enthusiastically follows a fanfare with the first few bars of the theme song, and in the Australian film The Dish, about the Apollo XI moon landing, when a teenage Australian band mistakenly played it thinking it was the American national anthem.

While the location, theme song, and esemble cast made "Hawaii Five-O" one of the longest running police dramas in television history, the show is also noted for it's liberal use of exterior locations as "sets" throughout the entire 12 seasons, breaking the tradition of filming indoors as with the case for a typical TV series. A typical episode, on average, would have at least two-thirds of all footage shot outdoors.

The term "Five-O" was adopted by American youth culture as a street slang term for the police.

The television show Magnum P.I. was created after Hawaii Five-O ended its run in order to make further use of the production equipment left there. The first few episodes made direct references to Five-O, suggesting that it takes place in the same "universe" as the earlier show.

Criticism of the show pointed out that the vast majority of characters were Caucasian, while only 40% of the population of the state identify themselves as non-Hispanic Caucasian. However, many local people were used to play parts in the show. The first run and syndication was seen by an estimated 400,000,000 people around the world.Jack Lord was the only actor to appear in all episodes of Five-O and was the only original cast member remaining when its last episode aired in May 1980. He and Herman Wedemeyer were the only actors to appear in the first episode (excluding the pilot) and the last episode of the series.
MacArthur has said on talk show appearances that he calculates the Five-O team would have accounted for all major crime and criminals on the islands several times over.
The show continues to be seen in Hawaii since it left the air, thus making it the longest-running show to continue airing in the state after it ceased production. It is currently seen on Honolulu independent outlet KWHE.
At least 3 episodes were centered around Danno. One episode took us to his apartment, and a second one probed into his love life a bit. He was engaged to a woman whose death was the plot line of the episode. A third episode in 1976 has Danny dating an actress, Anne Waring (Meg Foster), who becomes a target of criminals.
In a 1st season episode, a two-parter "Once Upon A Time", we learn that McGarrett has a sister and a brother-in-law. The story line has McGarrett going to California to visit his sister and brother-in-law after learning that their infant son has cancer. A doctor is treating the baby with unethical methods to cure him, but the baby dies anyway. McGarrett seeks out the truth about the doctor and her unethical methods on patients.
Chin Ho Kelly had 8 kids, as we learned in a second season Five-O episode, Cry Lie. This seems to have been a family trait, as his many relatives were apparently involved in all facets of life in Hawaii, from laborers in the sugar cane fields to Honolulu policemen, bartenders, tour bus drivers, etc. -- and Kelly knew them all by name. This is actually authentic, as descendants of the early Chinese cane field laborers diversified throughout Hawaiian society, while maintaining family ties.
In the TV-movie pilot, McGarrett drove a Mercury 2-door hardtop, apparently a 1967 Marquis (1967 was the first year for the Marquis, and it was only available as a 2-door hardtop). This car had a black body, black vinyl roof, and a red interior. In the series, McGarrett's trademark vehicle, often seen squealing tires throughout Honolulu, was a triple-black 1968 Mercury Park Lane Brougham 4-door hardtop. In a recurring continuity error, footage of the 2-door hardtop appeared in many episodes of the series. Around the 1973/74 season, his Park Lane was replaced by a 1973 Mercury Marquis Brougham 4-door, used until the end of the series. In a new recurring continuity error, footage of the 1968 Mercury appears in many episodes after the Mercury Marquis Brougham replaced it. After the show, Jack Lord gave the 1974 Mercury car he drove on the show to his stunt man, Jack Nordlum.
The phone numbers that were dialed from various Honolulu-area phone booths throughout the run of the series were actual household numbers, which caused some "invasion of privacy" concerns for residents, even after the series ended; hence in the middle of the series run, the Honolulu phone prefix "(808) 555-xxxx" was to be used on every episode from then on.
James MacArthur was the son of stage and film legend Helen Hayes; Hayes guest starred on a 1975 episode of Hawaii Five-0, "Retire to Sunny Hawaii", playing Danny Williams' aunt.[8]
After their short-lived NBC series The Quest in 1976, Kurt Russell and Tim Matheson appeared together in the 1977 "Deadly Doubles" episode of Hawaii Five-O.[Jack Lord was the only actor to appear in all episodes of Five-O and was the only original cast member remaining when its last episode aired in May 1980. Editorial Review:

Filmed entirely on location in Hawaii, the show followed Jack Lord as he played Steve McGarrett, head of an elite state police unit investigating "organized crime, murder, assassination attempts, foreign agents, felonies of every type." James MacArthur played his second-in-command Danny ("Danno") Williams, with local actors Kam Fong, Zulu, Al Harrington, and Herman Wedemeyer, among others, playing members of the Five-O team.

Ghost Hunter Season 3 part 2 5 out of 5 stars.

This was so far the best season all together but part 2 was better than part 1. It seems to me that TAPS is getting more money in and can now pay for more equipment and go alot more places. The only issue I could have in the future is if TAPS decides to go "Hollywood" meaning they are only going to do investigations for money, that worries me because this has always been an authentic series. This is ironic because they said they dont charge people for their investigations. Regardless, this is a great series and is so far alot more believable than any other ghost hunting team you will find. This is a must see, I own every season and the single investigations. Enjoy.

Editorial Review:

Grant, Jason, and the TAPS crew continue their record-breaking third season with a slew of spine-tingling investigations! From a seemingly haunted church to a World War II battleship, there is never shortage of supposed paranormal activity for the Ghost Hunters to seek to explain. Join the team as they investigate the mansion of a murdered Rhode Island governor and a haunted city hall. Then, go west, to an insane asylum in Seattle, a former Spanish fortress in San Francisco, and to Los Angeles for a tale of two Charlies – Manson and Chaplin that is! First, it’s up to the site of the Sharon Tate murder and then to Charlie Chaplin Studios which has been the source of many an interesting story of ghostly happenings both on and off screen! Plus a plethora of additional investigations and bonus footage never before seen on TV!

What a Pleasure 5 out of 5 stars.

What a pleasure it was -- and is -- to watch this show. this one's a real keeper -- with episodes you'll watch over and over. Definitely worth the money. Good casting, great storylines, martial arts that got better year by year, but mostly the fact that the show was about, um, immortal themes: honor, sacrifice, friendship, love, courage. Part adventure, part martial arts movie, part romance, part historical epic -- the series really captured and stimulated my imagination. The movies were darker, althogh the series had its moments, but the series had much more humor, often surrounding the Roger Daltry-played character Fitz. When Duncan mentors a new immortal, Ritchie, the series gains an entirely new dimension -- father/son. brotherly love, love/competition, etc. There are only a couple of series I like this much -- Babylon 5 and Highlander. I hope you try this one.

Great Series, Not Just For the Sci-Fi Fan - Recommended 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The "Highlander Series" is simply fantastic and well worth the money for the set. The series follows the life of an immortal, Duncan MacLeod of the clan MacLeod (kinsman to Lambert's character in the original Highlander).

There is a strong "Good vs Evil", "Right vs Wrong" theme that runs through the entire series. Having the characters behave in a realist and consistent manner episode to episode really added to the believability and enjoyability of the series. When a character deviated it was usually for a good reason and added to the plot.

The show feels only slightly dated, but the strong plot lines and great action more than compensate. Like any series, it certainly has a few "slower" episodes but, by and large, every episode is enjoyable if for no other reason than the well costumed "flashbacks" and inevitable "big fight".

Adrian Paul was a perfect fit for the part of Duncan, being a decent actor, "very good looking" (according to my teenage daughter), being in great physical shape, and pulling off very challenging fight scenes.

Highly recommended!

Blu-Ray Remains the Best Way to Watch Heroes (Truly Underrated!) 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Season Two, regardless of the writer's strike, remains high quality entertainment. Like many others, I was hesitant going in. What with all the excessive negative feedback. Not that this Season wasn't without its fair share of flaws, but most of which was rather minor compared to it's newfound strengths.

For those coming hot off the heels of Season One, hoping for more of the same but with tons of new characters, you're met halfway. Several of the new characters are surprisingly well developed and have gone on to become some of my favorite characters: Alejandro, Elle, Maya, and Monica. However, due to the considerably shortened length, many of the returning characters feel far too alien. Not enough screen time perhaps? For this very reason, many of the present struggles can be hard to relate to. More often than not, you feel as if Nathan and pals could've used that extra time. Maybe introduce a few more conflicts, and then you would have some excellent character development. No matter. Due to the writer's strike, none of which was possible. Still, going in, it was nice knowing many of these problems. Helped to appreciate more of the talents at work behind these scenes.

Now, the strengths. As mentioned earlier, the new characters are a breath of fresh air. Each trial shows something new; something special. That something is what really shines through, reminding you of just why you started watching Heroes in the first place. Probably the best aspect Season 2 has going for it. Granted, these stories still have a few problems here and there, but, for the most part, they are pulled off exceptionally well. There is a downside, however. If you find you are unable to relate with even but one character, the first several episodes will become laborious. In the case this happens, hold out. Try to find something worth liking, because the payoff that comes next is infinitely more rewarding. Seriously, you will hate yourself forever if you miss the return of "The Company Man."

Recall for a second, about halfway through the first season of Heroes the special effects extravaganza known as "The Company Man" struck a chord with audiences everywhere, changing the face of dramas forever. Well, I never thought I would be able to say this, but it seems lightning has struck twice. Cautionary Tales comes out of left field; full of raw, emotional, power that has quickly become one of my favorite episodes ever. Even better than Company Man. This is the episode I will remember Season 2 for for years to come. The Bennet family strikes again! Hopefully Season 3 can achieve much of the same success found here in this episode, but with the way the Petrelli war seems to be playing out this may be the last time the Bennets will be able to answer the call. This is one episode you cannot afford to miss!

After so much amazing you must be tired out, right? I know it's hard to imagine anything better than Cautionary Tales, but stick around. The final two episodes will wrap up the season remarkably well, answering several questions teased at since the very beginning. Some might even wonder why they didn't bother to mix parts of the ending in with the beginning. Could've helped remove some of the alienating aspects of the opening. While I agree with part of that statement, some parts are better left as is. For example, a lot of Nathan's character development this season was based around not knowing what had occurred to his brother. This made for some relatively deep psychological undertones that helped make him the standout this season. Of course, there were other parts. Like Matt Parkman raising Molly. Those made for some truly emotional scenes.

Despite Season 2's shortcomings, I have become increasingly fond of how much they were able to accomplish in just eleven episodes. A very well rounded eleven episodes I might add. Regardless, some attention must be given to some of its downfalls. First off, Hiro, Kensei, and Yaeko's storyline dragged on for far too long. The arc should have only taken two or three episodes at most. Not enough went on to warrant its appearance in the first seven episodes. On top of that, the romance was hardly convincing. Next, Adam Monroe should have been introduced much earlier, along with Peter's escape sequence. In turn, exposing Elle a bit earlier to the audience. All of this would have went a long way into making the season feel more dynamic.

A few other concerns include Elle's nature, did not seem quite as sadistic as they were trying to make her out to be, and Nikki. Granted, they were able to establish a bit of a connection later in the season, but I just felt not enough was covered to make us believe they were as important as their screen time suggested. Loose cannons if you will. Then again, the implications they leave have proven to be far more interesting.

Finally, there is but one last concern that need be raised: the lack of metaphors. Truly disheartening. Where's the cockroach? Where's the Nikki versus Jessica (Candice)? I miss them. I remember seeing Mr. Cockroach once. Can't remember past that. Will have to see again. Maybe I missed them.

In the end, I was pleasantly surprised by this season. Couldn't be happier, given the circumstances. The Blu-Ray itself is astonishing. Nice use of grain; accents the drama unfolding on screen. Rich colors decorate the world, capturing all the vibrant details from every corner of the Earth. I cannot say enough good things about the Picture Quality, let alone the Audio. Owning this season on Blu-Ray makes it that much better. Of course, you should start with the beginning, if you haven't already. Don't worry, you'll be caught up in no time. It only took me four weeks: including both seasons. Yes, I do have a job and am attending classes. Don't ask me how I did it. Just prepare to sign your life away. Once you see Heroes, you won't be able to think about anything else.

This is one of my most cherished Blu-Rays, along with Season 1. It doesn't get better than this. Both seasons come highly recommended.

Best season of all... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I love Hogans Heroes, and this season is my favorite. If you haven't bought a HH season yet, buy this first. Why? Because it is the best season of all and has the best episode of the series "Art for Hogan's Sake."

It is hard to imagine HH without all of the main characters, that is why the final season without Kinchlow is the least favorite of mine. HH#2 is the most original and most humorous of all. (But all of the others are VERY enjoyable as well.) You will be able watch these over and over again. They are all family friendly...unless you don't want your kids watching Hogan kiss a girl in every episode.

Editorial Review:

HOGAN’S HEROES: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON focuses on a group of American soldiers, led by Colonel Hogan (Crane), who are confined in a Nazi prisoner of war camp called Stalag 13 during World War II. While trapped in Stalag 13, the inmates conduct an espionage and sabotage campaign right under the noses of their warders. Because the Germans, led by the bumbling Colonel Wilhelm Klink (Emmy Award®-winning actor Klemperer), are often gullible, the real strength of Hogan’s men are the elaborate ruses and sometimes dangerous lengths they will go to complete their mission.

To anyone who did not see this in the 60's -- this was good family entertainment of the type we rarely see anymore. If you have seen it, get it to show it to your family and friends. It is an evening, day, or a weekend of fun a good laughs.

Best Television Comedy Series 5 out of 5 stars.

Our family has decided that this series is by far the best television comedy EVER! Yes, the subject is controversial, but our appreciation for the comedic acting talent and writing just increases with each episode. Really! The stage presence of the main actors is so good! We would have loved to see any of them on the live theater stage! This season's episodes are a big edgier than the earlier seasons. The characters have been developed, and yet as WW II grew darker, so must the attitude of Hogan and his men. But the hilarity of the zany capers they pull off is still in fine form. We endorse this comedy series to any family for fun television "togetherness". In fact, our son says this is his favorite season of all of them.

While the enemy is often gullible, easily fooled or downright incompetent – the real strength of Hogan’s men are the elaborate ruses and sometimes dangerous lengths they will go to complete their mission.

I purchased this for my husband last year after he mentioned he used to watch it when he was young. I think I watched the whole series before he got the chance. I absolutely loved the story line and the characters. Too bad television has had to change so much.

Editorial Review:

Robert Brown, pop music superstar Bobby Sherman and David Soul (TV's Starsky and Hutch) star in the classic television series HERE COME THE BRIDES, a delightful comedy that combines romance and adventure in the rugged landscape of the mid-nineteenth century Pacific Northwest.

The Bolt brothers own a mountain and logging camp in Seattle, and as the area's only employer, the brothers borrow money and head east to bring back a shipload of lovely ladies to boost morale. But if any of the women leave Seattle within a year, the Bolts lose their mountain to the man that lent them the money.

Also starring legendary actress Joan Blondell (Grease, The Public Enemy), the complete first season of HERE COME THE BRIDES is presented for the first time ever - and is only available - on DVD.

The best show of its era 5 out of 5 stars.

There was a time in the 1980s when the best hour of television was on Thursdays at 10:00 when Hill Street Blues came on. At the time, I was a dedicated fan, and though I'd caught the show occasionally in syndication, it'd been years since I'd really seen the show. Rewatching the first season of this show reminded me that even two decades later, this remains a quality show.

Prior to Hill Street Blues, cop shows tended to focus almost entirely on the mystery of the week. Characters rarely changed from week to week, so you could watch the episodes in almost any order. The personal lives of the characters was completely secondary, often just enough to give them a bit of dimension. Hill Street Blues changed that.

Unlike most cop shows, Hill Street Blues really was an ensemble show, taking place in the Hill Street Precinct of an unnamed but generally run-down city. The central character is Captain Frank Furillo, who is as much a bureaucrat as a cop; while generally a good guy, he knows when rules need to be bent or broken, but there are certain lines he won't cross. There are street cops, most notably Officers Hill and Renko who bicker like a married couple and detectives like LaRue and Washington, the former being an alcoholic who is always on the brink of self-destruction. A favorite of many is Mick Belker, a grungy diminutive detective whose bite is as bad as his bark, yet he always has time to talk to his mother.

Some cop characters start off as stereotypes, but eventually develop some depth. Howard Hunter starts off as the semi-fascist leader of the EAT (essentially a SWAT team) and Henry Goldblume is Hunter's bleeding-heart liberal contrast. Goldblume evolves in this season, but Hunter will take several seasons to really seem human.

It is amazing that in this era when story arcs can often takes many episodes if not entire seasons, that there was concern when certain Hill Street Blues stories took three or four episodes to resolve; could the audience handle it? Apparently so. In fact, though some parts of this show are dated (the first season is 28 years old, after all), overall Hill Street Blues holds up well. With both humor and gravity, this is an excellent show. If you enjoy today's crime dramas (CSI, Numbers, Cold Case, etc.), check out the show that really kicked off the modern version of the genre.

Editorial Review:

"LET’S BE CAREFUL OUT THERE." So ends each roll call session at the Hill Street station house. As the cops and detectives head out to the streets, Captain Frank Furillo begins the delicate balancing act of providing enough protection for the law-abiding citizens without inciting the neighborhood gangs and local criminal elements who are openly hostile towards any police presence. Yet as dangerous as his inner city precinct can be, Furillo's biggest battles often involve protecting his own cops from the Public Defender's office, self-serving bureaucrats, and even each other.
