Elusive, conclusive evidence 1 out of 5 stars.

The UFO Hunters investigated the flying saucer phenomenon by taking a fresh look at several interesting cases. Taking the time and trouble to gather information on-site and intent on much more than simply recounting intriguing stories, the team subjected physical evidence to experimental analyses. UFO study is especially challenging because it does not lend itself easily to controlled and reproducible experiments that are the heart of science and medicine. Dismissed by mainstream science since the publication of the Condon Report nearly forty years ago, those who believe some UFO events reveal intelligently controlled devices have struggled ever since for attention and acceptance.

The UFO Hunters focused on select, solid cases and employed the tools and techniques of science to uncover and analyze objective evidence. The producers often took care to present (or at least mention) the full spectrum of facts, including those that do not support the extraterrestrial hypothesis. Also included was some of the give and take between science consultant, Dr. Ted Acworth, and team members who were more inclined to be believers. In principle, this should have been the sort of effort that brings an increased measure of respectability to the field.

As a scientist, I found the series to be a consistent failure. However, by far the most fascinating and extraordinary revelations the UFO Hunters program offered had little to do with any facts. These programs, perhaps unintentionally, provided a glimpse into the thoughts and logic of a true UFO believer. In so doing it revealed how difficult it will be to ever reconcile those opinions and feelings with the tenets of data and fact-driven science.

To illustrate some of the issues and insights two episodes are examined.

Abductions - failure to disprove

The true art of selective seeing involves instinctively recognizing when not to look. Summing up at the end of this episode, Bill Birnes critiqued un-named debunkers (none of whom appeared in this episode) he maintains complain that no evidence proving the existence of UFOs is in hand. He goes on to add that not one thing has been found to disprove an extraterrestrial presence is influencing our lives. That statement seems true and some viewers may find it is a comforting final assessment of the investigation outcome. It is unlikely to have survived unchallenged if any debunkers had been in the same room. That failure to disprove rationalization overlooks the inconvenient fact that the results frankly do not support the extraterrestrial entity hypothesis. At its heart, this assertion is a deft dodge diverting attention from a relentless analytic process that, had it not been summarily terminated, could and would have ground on to an obvious and potentially distressing logical conclusion. Face it, the team set out to get hard evidence proving the extraterrestrial entity hypothesis. It certainly would be a remarkable turn of events if the best data they could muster from the strongest cases they had chosen to prove the extraterrestrial hypothesis ended up disproving it. However, the unseemly dismissal of the entire effort as disproving nothing conveniently evaded what the team actually did discover - that despite their best efforts with the most preeminent physical evidence available and a definite propensity to believe, no unequivocal objective support for extraterrestrials was revealed. Clearly, the fate of a scientific hypothesis could hinge on the outcome of one decisive experiment, but much more often it is the collective weight of the evidence considered honestly as a whole that ultimately decides these matters. Cornered by the results and desperate to escape, invoking the failure to disprove argument put the team in the awkward position of ignoring the larger implications of their own investigation.

Alien contact - fact, fallacy and fantasy

In this particularly fascinating episode team leader Bill Birnes unleashed a veritable barrage of unsubstantiated claims and deductions based on unfounded leaps of logic and sheer fantasy. This truly bizarre train of ill-logic leads the team to formulate its own fallacious hypothesis regarding biochemical evidence that corroborates human-alien contact.

Interviewing a person reporting repeated UFO sightings, Bill rapidly deduced that this young man is a human-ET hybrid. For the record, assertions of hybridization are dangerous to their proponents because with the completion of the human genome project and rapid DNA sequencing methods, such outrageous claims can now be tested directly. Those who proffer such tales run the risk of provoking a debunker feeding frenzy with potentially disastrous damage to their credibility. The team seems to have wisely declined to pursue any definitive genetic experiments assessing human-alien hybridization. Instead, Bill offers the utterly fantastic and conveniently unverifiable assertions that secretive G-men operatives are recruiting this person for something and implies he [Bill] has knowledge of a shadowy government program(s) dedicated to such efforts.

Linking the medical condition of this young man to UFOs (precisely why and how is never explained), the team interviews another UFO witness. Deciding the sightings of the two witnesses are similar, although their stories of contact are rather different, the team hypothesizes that a blood abnormality already known to exist in one of these men is actually a marker of alien contact and, therefore, must be present in the other. Asserting elevated serum enzyme creatine kinase (CK) levels reveal extraterrestrial entity contact is to put it kindly, a gross misconception masquerading as a hypothesis. The basic facts about the CK enzyme reveal just how tricky it can be to decide what elevated serum levels of it mean. CK is present in several body tissues and is released into the blood due to damage from disease or trauma. Elevated total serum CK levels predictably accompany many medical conditions, including heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, muscle degeneration and injury among others. Alone, because so many things may cause it, recognizing an elevated total serum CK level without other clinical information is of minimal diagnostic value.

Both putative contactees were brought to the same hospital where one received a thorough examination, including stress testing, to assess muscle metabolic abnormalities. The other was apparently subjected only to a simple blood draw, although perhaps he was also provided the same battery of examinations, but to avoid repetition, this wasn't shown. The exams revealed that the person with a known history of elevated serum CK levels continued to exhibit this abnormality. In the opinion of the attending physician, this condition was unusual and referable to muscle issues. Watch the remainder of this episode carefully as the second patient is considered. I believe the doctor informs us that an indicator of inflammation was detected in the second person, but unlike the first patient, that marker is not attributable to muscle pathology. Whether serum CK levels are elevated in the second person is not clear and unable to examine the data, one must wonder about the extent to which these two patients are comparable. Perhaps the doctor meant he saw a completely different generic marker of inflammation (for example, C reactive protein) in the second patient and that statement was incorrectly interpreted and seized on by the team. For those visualizing nefarious G-men and recognizing human-alien hybrids solely on the basis of interviews, that certainly would represent a small leap and could be their single most reasonable conclusion of the episode. Viewers are advised that this unfounded and uncontrolled experiment in no way exemplifies how scientific investigations involving human subjects are conceived and conducted by responsible, professional researchers.

Seeking obscure evidence of extraterrestrial entities, often many years after the fact, the UFO Hunters took on an enormously difficult problem. Given its nature, there is no shame in finding conclusive evidence is elusive. Whether they ever bring forth hard scientific proof of the extraterrestrial hypothesis, they have a file cabinet full of mysterious and provocative cases. It is not solid science, it is sometimes outrageous and frequently flat-out fallacious, but at least believers and skeptics alike will probably find many of the stories are entertaining.

Editorial Review:

Homicide's sixth season begins with a bang. Three-part premiere "Blood Ties" represents the Peabody Award-winning drama at its best. The ambitious story arc introduces a case that will pit the detectives against a prominent Maryland family--and each other. The Wilson family includes Lt. Giardello's friend, Felix (James Earl Jones), his loyal wife (Lynne Thigpen), and his wayward son (Jeffrey Wright). By the time the case is put to rest, everyone involved will have lost more than they've gained. On the plus side, Pembleton (Andre Braugher) has another baby on the way and Bayliss (Kyle Secor) is about to embark on a relationship--with Dr. Cox (Michelle Forbes).

More changes are on the way. Characters introduced in season 5 will become regulars in season 6: Laura Ballard (Callie Thorne), Stuart Gharty (Peter Gerety), and Paul Falsone (Jon Seda). Culture clashes will commence the moment they step into the squad room. But some things never change and Homicide will continue to boast some of the best acting, writing, and directing on network television. Another standout episode, "The Subway," featuring Vincent D'Onofrio, would even become the focus of a PBS special, Anatomy of a Homicide, which is included with this collection.

The biggest story arc will last the entire season. The squad may have thought that the shooting of Luther Mahoney marked the end of his reign, but they were wrong. Luther had followers, like his steely sister, Georgia Rae (Hazelle Goodman), and her loose-cannon son, Junior (Mekhi Phifer). Kellerman (Reed Diamond) will continue to be dogged by rumors that the shoot wasn't "clean," and the other detectives will start to abandon him, even former flame Cox and ex-partner Lewis (Clark Johnson). The sixth season of Homicide would turn out to be the last for Forbes, Diamond, and Emmy Award-winner Braugher. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Editorial Review:

Homicide's seventh season was surely its riskiest. Could they go on without Andre Braugher--should they even try? Fortunately, the answer is yes. As good as Braugher was, Homicide wasn't a star vehicle and the ensemble remained strong. Of course, there were a few cast changes, but that was nothing unusual. In season premiere "Famiglia," two new characters are introduced: Det. Renée Sheppard (Michael Michele, Ali) and Sgt. Giardello's FBI agent son, Mike (Giancarlo Esposito, Do the Right Thing), visiting from Arizona. In the follow-up "Brotherly Love," Mike decides to stay and becomes special liaison to the Baltimore PD. In addition, Austin Pendleton (Oz) would appear frequently as Chief ME George Griscom.

As ever, a variety of charismatic performers dropped by during 1998-1999. They include Aerosmith's Joe Perry, Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU), Jena Malone (Donnie Darko), Wallace Shawn (My Dinner With André), and Reed Diamond (Judging Amy), reprising his role as Mike Kellerman. In addition, a crossover with Law & Order ("Sideshow") brought Benjamin Bratt, Jerry Orbach, and Sam Waterston into the fold. Notable seventh season directors include Lisa Cholodenko (High Art), Miguel Arteta (Chuck and Buck), Joe Berlinger (Paradise Lost), and Kathryn Bigelow (Near Dark).

The general consensus is that Homicide's seventh season was its weakest. Even at its worst, however, it was still the smartest crime drama on network television. Although year seven would turn out to be the last, the show didn't really end until broadcast of Homicide: The Movie the following year. In it, the surviving cast members reunite to solve the attempted assassination of mayoral candidate Giardello. The TV movie also ties up loose ends from series finale "Forgive Us Our Trespasses" (like whether Kyle Secor's Tim Bayliss killed a murder suspect). Unfortunately, it isn't included with this 22-episode set. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

This Stinks! 1 out of 5 stars.

If you own a TV Guardian that mutes the bad words, forget it working with Seasons 1 and 2 of Highway To Heaven. The Guardian needs Closed Captioning to work. Some episodes don't hevs swearing but that is not the norm. I gave 1 star because of No CC and edited Episodes and Swearing.
And too expensive not to have Closed Captioning.
What a pity.

Highway to Heaven-Season 2 4 out of 5 stars.

I enjoyed this Season also, have the number one season, and enjoyed both. The product is good sound, good picture, no problem at all. Would recommend it to anyone who is looking for good family entertainment.

Editorial Review:

Forget Steve Reeves and all those Italian strongmen who played stiff, humorless versions of the mythic demigod in 1960s Saturday matinee fodder. Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (a cluster of 1990s television films followed by a syndicated series) re-imagines and re-introduces Hercules--son of Olympian chief Zeus and an earthbound, mortal mother--as a laidback but focused hero of ordinary folks with extraordinary problems. Played with casual grace and ironic wit by Kevin Sorbo, the new Hercules wanders through an equally entertaining, revisionist view of ancient Greece as, well, charming and accessible--not exactly Homeric. There are gods and monsters aplenty, but if this was the cradle of civilization, well....

This eight-disc volume includes five movie-length adventures, thirteen one-hour episodes, and numerous bonus features. Narratively, the unfolding story finds Herc doing good deeds wherever he's needed, though his backstory is more interesting, including a dubious relationship with his all-powerful dad (a sweet performance by Anthony Quinn)and a tendency to feel the wrath of Zeus's wife, Hera, simply because Hercules is the philandering old man's illegitimate offspring. The movie cycle ends with Herc in a state of domestic bliss; the subsequent, regular series darkens him considerably but then thrusts him repeatedly into adventures with redemptive possibilities.

Nifty special effects make one believe once again in centaurs, many-headed serpents, a Minotaur, a Cyclops, and several other fantastic species not included in standard references to Greek myths. The regular or recurring cast include Michael Hurst as Hercules's vain, comic-foil buddy, Iolaus; Tawny Kitaen as the hero's wife; and Lucy Lawless in a pre-Xena role (in Hercules and the Amazon Women) and then as the Warrior Princess herself for multiple episodes. All together, this is a show that turned out to be smarter and funnier than anyone might have expected in the mid-'90s, and which holds up very well today. --Tom Keogh

Still lovin' it 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

What a firecracker this season of the Baltimore-based police drama is! Starring Richard Belzer, Andre Braugher, Reed Diamond, Clark Johnson, Yaphet Kotto, Melissa Leo, Max Perlich and Kyle Secor, it opens with a hostage situation at a Baltimore middle school and ends 22 episodes later with the investigation into a major character's murder and news of some major changes in the department in the coming year. In between, there's all manner of mayhem including a prison riot, an upsurge in drug-related murders, arson, a carjacking, a murder in a boarding school, an armed suspect who holes up in the headquarters of an African-American community group and the suspicious death of an Nigerian man who was transporting 72 heroin-filled condoms for a notorious druglord.

As always, the scenes are gritty and realistic; like its cousin, HBO's "The Wire", the show was shot on location in Baltimore. The cracking dialogue is authentic too: often it has nothing at all to do with moving the actual story forward, as is often the case in real life. There's tense action and innocent people sometimes die. But as always, for me, the most interesting aspect of this series - apart from the crime detection - is the interpersonal relationships between the various characters, especially between Detectives Pembleton and Bayliss (played by Braugher and Secor respectively).

All the familiar faces are back: Pembleton's return to duty raises a number of challenges, for him, his colleagues and even for his wife. Still recovering from the stroke he suffered last season, I think it's a huge credit to Braugher's acting skills that he's able to evoke sympathy for a character that has hitherto been so exasperating, if not just plain irritating. (But of course, that doesn't last). He attends marriage counselling with her later on in the season, which makes for very interesting viewing and Kellerman faces Federal corruption charges.

Directors this season include Ted Demme, Kevin Hooks, Kyle Secor and Clark Johnson. Guest stars include regulars like Zeljko Ivanek as Assistant State's Attorney Ed Danvers, Ami Brabson (Braugher's wife in real life) as Pembleton's wife Mary, Clayton LeBouef as the he-looks-way-too-young-to-be-a Captain Barnfarther and the achingly beautiful Granville Adams as beat officer Jeff Westby.

Introduced this season are Toni Lewis as narcotics detective Terri Stivers and raven-haired Michelle Forbes as the new Chief Medical Examiner, Dr Julianna Cox. Other big names to look out for include Edie Falco, Rosanna Arquette, Tate Donovan, Charles S. Dutton, Glenn Fitzgerald, Melvin Van Peebles, Mekhi Phifer, LaTanya Richardson, Eric Stoltz, Dean Winters, Elijah Wood and the show's executive producer, Barry Levinson (appearing as himself).

This season also sees the opening gambits of the Luther Mahoney saga with the smooth, cool & totally ruthless druglord excellently played by Erik Todd Dellums. That storyline is worth the price of the boxset all on its own and it runs into the following season.

DVD extras include audio commentary by writers James Yoshimara and Eric Overmeyer on ep. 9, film-within-a-film "The Documentary"; "Inside Homicide", an interview with David Simon and James Yoshimura; cast and crew biographies and scene selection. My only gripes with this boxset are the lack of subtitles and the absence of details regarding the music that was used in the series. They provided them on the boxset for season four so I'm a bit mystified as to why they couldn't let us have them here too.

With "The Wire" now gone, "NYPD Blue" a distant memory and the enduring "Law & Order" beginning to show its age after 18 years, it would seem that the era of gritty urban police dramas is slowly but surely coming to an end. We only have "The Shield" left.

Thank heavens for DVD boxsets.

One other thing: Considering the fact that this season was made and originally aired in 1996/97, it still looks incredibly fresh and contemporary today. Proof, if ever any were needed, that good art never gets old.

A huge improvement in quality over the previous two seasons 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

The first two seasons of HERCULES were pretty much just a decent kid's show. Narratively the only thing of consequence was the emergence of Xena as a character prior to her spin off. The core problem with HERCULES was that the show contained no significant conflict. While Hercules had suffered mightily at the hand of Hera, losing his family, he is a remarkably decent, nice guy. Kevin Sorbo managed to make this Hercules likable, but he was unable, given the writing on the show, to make him complex or especially interesting. To be fair, XENA had the same problem until they introduced the "Dark Xena" background stories, which made the Xena of the present infinitely more interesting. But HERCULES never made an equivalent transition and as a result never became particularly compelling.

Nonetheless, beginning about halfway through Season Three HERCULES became far more interesting. Much of this resulted from an influx of characters and storylines from XENA. The Ares who had been introduced on XENA shifted over to HERCULES (Kevin Smith had already been on XENA as Ares, but on HERCULES he was already familiar as Hercules' brother Iphicles). Xena and Gabrielle even made it over for an episode while Joxer even made one of his few appearances on the senior show. Aphrodite made a couple of nice appearances as Amanda Tyddings pulled double duty on both shows, but the best XENA crossover was the first of several excellent appearances by Hudson Leick as Callisto. This would begin a formula that would greatly intensify in the final three seasons of HERCULES, as the two shows would often share recurring characters, in particular Autolycus, Ares, Aphrodite, and Callisto, as well as several lesser characters.

While HERCULES never achieved the excellence of many of XENA's best moments, neither did it succumb to its abuses. If one loves ancient history then XENA is at times embarrassing and frequently profoundly annoying. HERCULES delves into history far less frequently, though it takes, perhaps, even more liberties with mythology. And while I find the frequent fight scenes on HERCULES far less absurd than the Hong Kong inspired fighting on XENA, it was also less imaginative, partly due to Kevin Sorbo doing much of his own stunt work, while on XENA Lucy Lawless was able to hand over to the wondrous Zoë Bell the more extreme stunts.

The biggest disappointment about Season Three was, in a way, the final episode, "Atlantis." The always appealing Claudia Black appeared as Cassandra and at the end of the episode the final shot of the season shows Hercules with his arm around her from behind, suggesting definite romantic potential. Unfortunately, despite Cassandra's suggestion that they were going to be seeing a lot of one another and Hercules' agreement, Black would appear in only one more episode.

All in all, a reasonably pleasant show, but certainly not one of the milestones of television.

Great show, but WRONG set 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I almost ordered this collection, but then noticed another set (also through Amazon, linked below) that had a bonus disk. Disk 35 includes the three "Law & Order" crossover episodes, and "Homicide: The Movie", which ties up many loose ends.

Without the bonus disk, this collection isn't truly complete, and thus rated only 4 stars. The Homicide 35-disk megaset is worth the extra bucks, and an extra star.

(PS: A special thanks to Mr. Bey (Riverside, CT United States), whose review of this set tipped me off about the missing crossover episodes and led me to search out the megaset I now own and enjoy)

EDIT: I purcahsed the Megaset in July 2007 for $112.42. Now the price has jumped to $340 +. It's a good show, but I doubt that I would have paid anything over $200.00.
