Stop complaining! 20 episodes for $25 is a good deal! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this at Wal-Mart for $24.99 and was very happy with the quality and the amount of episodes. There were 39 episodes that year (this one has 20. If you love the old classic TV western, you'll love this. I'm not joining the bandwagon of griper misers who expect all 39 episodes for $10 or $15. Get real! Back in the old days people would pay $25 for one episode on 8 mm film. Now people are just mean spirited and expect everything for nothing. Yes, go buy a bootleg, but your quality will suffer. If you want a Cadillac, you're going to have to pay. If you think it's too much money, just don't buy it! I think it's a great deal. Why do so many call it a ripoff? Hey, maybe you can paint my house for $200. No? Oh I see..you've got to make a living at what you do too.

Still the Best 5 out of 5 stars.

I finished the first season, so naturally I had to continue. I watched Gunsmoke for its entire 20 season run and now it is even better with these high quality videos. It would have been nice to have the whole second season in one set, but that does not detract from the individual episodes. The commercials brought back old memories when we were not so worried about being PC all the time. I watched 7 episodes in a row and am up for 7 more any time. I hope CBS comes through with the rest of the series. One of my favorite TV shows of all time so I am in hog heaven. These were shown on Saturday night right after "Have Gun Will Travel" when it came on then moved to Monday night for the final years. Great old memories. Time has not diminished these old shows one bit in my estimation.

Editorial Review:

Marshall Matt Dillon is responsible for keeping the law and respectability in Dodge City in this western action-drama. Gunsmoke captured the courage, character and spirit of the Western Frontier.

I don't care what nobody say about Different World, 227, and Living Single, Girlfriends was ONE of the shows of my prime that I totally enjoyed! I enjoy the other shows as well but I'm glad their bringing out the DVDS now because the show was just GREAT!! Even when JILL MARIE left the show It was still great and I hope they do get a respectful ending because this show was NUMBER 1 in Black households for seven(7) years and to come because It's on DVD!!! Before DIFFERENT WORLD 227 & LIVING SINGLE!!

Love, Love, Love Girlfriends 5 out of 5 stars.

My only regret is I have gotten nothing done since the arrival of season 4 in my mailbox. I can't stop watching. The acting and writing on this show are truly brilliant. I just want to know when season 5 will be available?!

Getting smarter 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Smart. Maxwell Smart. The dumbest spy in the world, who fights on behalf of the forces of goodness and niceness, and succeeded in making democracy vs. communism a lot more entertaining. And the second season of spies, lies and kookiness only gets funnier, with Don Adams and Barbara Feldon continuing to save the free world.

Don Adams is Agent 86, Maxwell Smart, a not-so-bright spy with an endless arsenal of strange devices and odd sayings. The bumbling spy at a top-secret government agency called Control, which tirelessly works to keep the free world free. He's accompanied by his capable partner/love interest Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon), and overseen by the long-suffering Chief (Eward Platt) who puts up with Smart's constant mistakes.

The second season starts off rockily, with KAOS reprogramming Hymie to murder the Chief, and soon they step up their attacks against CONTROL: KAOS's new leader Siegfried (Bernie Kopell) kidnaps the Chief, and Max responds by kidnapping KAOS's top assassin... unfortunately sparking off a bunch of revenge kidnappings, until nobody is left at either organization.

As the season goes on, Max encounters new obstacles and plots against the free world -- he fakes his death, impersonates a safecracker, goes to Casablanca, tries to solve serial killings in the tropics, works in a circus, suffers amnesia, and is pursued by an evil big game hunter, a la "The Most Dangerous Game."

And what's more, and 99 have to deal with art thieves, submarines, mummies, beauty pageants, Arab princes, mouthy KAOS parrots, CONTROL being closed down, smiling killers, bronze paint, the Choker, going to jail, and a seductive woman who may be the dismantlement of Hymie.

The important development of "Get Smart's" second season is that Max finally gets a regular nemesis. As Holmes had his Moriarty, so Max has his Siegfried: a heel-cracking German with an exuberant sidekick, and a catchphrase of his own ("Ve don't ____ here!"). Siegfried isn't in every episode, but he crops up often enough to be worth noting.

Basically, the second season polishes up the kooky spy antics of the first, with more slapstick antics, delightfully weird problems (Max as head of the CONTROL workers' union?), and movie homages ("Goldfinger," "The Most Dangerous Game," "Casablanca"). Not to mention those wonderfully improbable gadgets ("Why hide a tape recorder in a camera and a camera in a tape recorder? Why not just take pictures with the camera, and record with the recorder?" "Because my mind doesn't work that way, that's why!").

Don Adams is the heart of the series, with his quirky face, nasal voice, odd body language and confident catchphrases ("And loving it!"). Max is not your usual inept spy -- he's confident that he's suave and competant, and somehow this carries him through to the end. Barbara Feldon plays a wonderful straight woman to Max's goofiness, while Edward Platt is just wonderful as the long-suffering Chief.

As for the new characters: Kopell is hysterical as "Zigfried," an excitable Germanic KAOS agent who is constantly thwarted by Max, which tends to upset him. David Ketchum is introduced as the aptly named Agent 13, an unlucky guy who is always hiding in tiny unpleasant spaces (garbage cans, freezers).

"Get Smart" didn't get smarter in its second season, but it definitely got better, especially with the introduction of Siegfried. Definitely a must see, for fans of spies and madcap comedy.

I really enjoyed watching this for what I missed. Seeing actors I didn't realized were there before they had grown, seeing the whole thing with new eyes. I had remembered this show with fondness and still love the song track. Even now, after I've grown, it is still entertaining and fun to watch.

hilarious, blah. 5 out of 5 stars.

One of the great one season wonders in tv history this show is as good the fifth time you watch the episodes as the first. The extras left me a little disappointed but the show is just so original and funny it doesn't matter. I got it for 12 bucks with free shipping so the price really cant get any better either.

hassle free 5 out of 5 stars.

HILARIOUS!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is hilarious! I still don't understand why it only ran for one season. I hear rumors of a come back... I sure hope so!

Wonderfully well-produced 5 out of 5 stars.

Plenty's been said here about the excellent show here, but the DVD producers aren't getting enough credit. Greg the Bunny narrates his own DVD menus with a series of monologues that perfectly fit the mood of the series. Plenty of extras/deleted scenes. Plenty of director commentaries, including a commentary on the lengthy deleted scenes. The only downside is that the producers, writers, etc are all a touch more boring than some.

Editorial Review:

Uncut, uncensored and unrelenting, Greg the Bunny stars Seth Green and Eugene Levy and is rude, crude, and stuffed with attitude. TV wasn’t ready for him. Are you? The complete series on DVD includes two never aired episodes and much more. Puppets are people too!

If you watched Gunsmoke 5 out of 5 stars.

If you watched Gunsmoke as a kid, you need to watch it again as an adult. Miss Kitty takes on a whole different role. Matt is more handsome than ever. And you know at least a dozen Festus's in real life.

Gunsmoke 50th Anniversary Collection 4 out of 5 stars.

While I understand people wanting season sets and all (and now they're getting them), the company was probably releasing collections like this to "test the waters" to make sure there was enough interest to warrant season sets. Apparently, there was. One of the great things about this set is it lets you track the evolution of the show, and could be a good guide to which season sets you might be interested in. For me, the later, hour-long episodes are better (I thought the opposite would be true). I had never seen any of the black and whites before...they are good, but the really early ones (half-hour) don't have much appeal to me. In the hour-long shows, even the black and white ones, they wrap up the ending with Matt and the person he saved or was gunning for, have a "moment" which really helps the show. Until the final black and white season, that great, familiar theme music also is not there...well, maybe a plodding version of it. That may seem like a nuance, but I think it's important. This set only includes a couple of episodes with Burt Reynolds as Quint Asper. I would like to have at least one more, he was very good in the role. But overall, this is a nice collection. It is overpriced (nearly $2 per episode) for an old show, but a fun splurge. If coupled with the Director's Collection, that probably fills in some holes too. I'm thinking about buying that too, although I'll probably skip the First Season set. This is one of those shows they should have started releasing season sets in the middle then work their way out in both directions, since the middle of the series seems to hold the most interest. ADDITIONAL INFO: With the switch to color episodes in this set (the "syndicated" or "TV Land" episodes), it appears that most of them are taken from videotape copies rather than going back to the original film elements. I didn't notice it on my old TV, but since I switched to HD, it's very apparent. While the black and whites are really clear, the color episodes are comparatively fuzzy, and at least one has garbled sound (the William Shatner episode). There are also abrupt fade-ins and fade-outs on at least one, which the original films wouldn't have had (but TV Land does). Still nice to have, but HD reveals a lot of problems that shouldn't be present.

Marshall Matt Dillon is responsible for bringing law and respectability to the Dodge City in this western action-drama. The show still holds the record for being the longest running primetime drama series in television history.

Best middle class show ever!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Best Buy already has this dvd out...exclusively. This has to be one of the realest middle class family show ever. This is real family working class situations. The actors just fit in with the characters. The best character has to be "Uncle Eddie". I think all middle class american families have a "Uncle Eddie" somewhere...I know I do. Why the network decided to cut the show beats me. You can relate with this show. Its not your fake bogus shows that nobody lives that way. Even though The Finnerty Family is Irish,it feels like any family can be like The Finnerty.

Not the best ending for the show. 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I hate having to give this one a mediochre rating. Grounded For Life (alongside Seinfeld) still stands as my favorite (non Star Trek) TV show of all time. Unfortunetly, by the time season 5 came around, the shows creators had been called off to write for other shows and did not write this season. I must admit that it shows and the series suffered for it. And what ever happened to Henry? It was like he was wiped out of existance and out of everyones memory in this season. I think they said his name once in the last episode, and that was all for the whole season. I figured he'd at least come back in with Walt (who was also pretty much non-existant in the season) in the end of the final episode, but he was no where to be found. I was disapointed in the DVD. It seems like the production company just threw it all together to get it out of their hair and onto the shelves as quickly as possible. The first four seasons had a lot more care put into the DVD production. I'm not trying to diss the show, as mentioned before I love this show. I'm just saying that the DVD production was second rate and the writing lost some of its flair. But for the sake of completing your Grounded For Life collection, I would still recomend picking this up.

Edited, again, and it's not just the music 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

The history of these DVD sets since season one has had the episodes literally butchered when it came to the music in the show. Even a small snipit of Sargent Carter singing "The Night Was Meant For Love" in one episode, or a full version of Gomer singing "This Train is a Going Home Train", the cheapsakes that are producing these DVD sets of Gomer Pyle make even Season 4 a disappointment. However, in watching these episodes I'm finding that it's not just music that's cut; there is also dialog in scenes that's been hacked out. Because of the electronic graphic and CG era that we live in, I look forward to shows being released on DVD because there are no "bugs" in the corners of the screens, no animated graphics promoting upcoming shows, or any other distractions. The shows for the most part are the way they should be seen, uncut and commercial free. This is not the case with the Gomer Pyle DVD's including season 4. Dialog, music and other scenes cut because the production companies don't want to pay the royalties for the music included in the original releases. Why dialog is cut, I'm not sure. I was such a fan of this show, and really wanted a complete collection of the episodes, but I'm very disappointed in the results that have come about on my store shelves. If we continue to purchase these edited sets, the production companies will continue to put out these cheap imitations of the real show. I've written a letter to CBS with a formal complaint, but I know it will fall on deaf ears. But if more enthusiasts like us continue, maybe we'll make a difference. If you're an avid fan of Gomer, then this is the best we can get for now. I only wish they were complete episodes.

Editorial Review:

Gomer Pyle, a naive country boy, leaves his home in Mayberry, NC to join the U.S. Marine corps. His perpetual wide-eyed innocence frequently gets on the nerves of his tough, loudmouthed sergeant. A successful spin-off from THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW.
