Editorial Review:

Felicity: Junior Year Collection is an improvement over year 2--perhaps inevitably, as the characters are lurching toward adulthood more rapidly and definitively. For the most part, Felicity (Keri Russell) and the gang still face the same challenges--commitment, academic momentum, conflicts over values, pressure from parents--but the stakes are higher because everyone has outgrown adolescent defenses and revealed more of themselves to lovers and friends. The third season begins with lots of smiles and hopes as Felicity, boyfriend Ben (Scott Speedman), would-be filmmaker Sean (Greg Grunberg), kinky Wiccan Meghan (Amanda Foreman), and the rest return from a summer break to get reacquainted. Felicity, expected to move in with pals Julie (Amy Jo Johnson) and Elena (Tangi Miller), impulsively decides to move into an apartment with Ben instead--without telling Ben. The funky hovel becomes a source of conflict (even more after Ben lets a beautiful neighbor take a bath in his and Felicity's living-room tub) that exacerbates the couple's ambivalence about one another.

But a lot of things do that, including a visit from Felicity's mom (Eve Gordon) that finds the latter lobbying against Ben (who hasn't chosen a career and gets into a couple of fights this season) and for Noel (Scott Foley, whose character seems destined for success and who remains, secretly, in love with Felicity). Meanwhile, Sean and Meghan deal with the former's possible testicular cancer, Elena grapples with her virgin boyfriend's insistence on no pre-marital sex, Julie disappears while depressed over her relationship with her father, and newcomer Molly (Sarah-Jane Potts) tries to break off a relationship with a gun-toting drug addict (Robert Patrick Benedict). Typically, season 3 has frequent, jaw-dropping dramatic highlights, including a shooting that results in a profound experience for nearly everyone, an episode in which Felicity wakes up naked in a fraternity house, and another in which she is the recipient of an awkward pass by Ben's alcoholic father (John Ritter). Life is never dull in this series executive-produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, and the subject of growing up, when treated with as much insight as Felicity offers, is always interesting. Among the special features is a great parody of the series from Mad TV. --Tom Keogh

Editorial Review:

If Felicity was always a collective portrait of young adults perpetually at a crossroads, then Felicity: Senior Year Collection (The Complete Fourth Season) concerns that moment when one realizes the long-deferred future of grown-up responsibilities has finally arrived. In other words, Senior Year is about decisiveness and commitment shaking things up among Felicity's tight-knit group of soon-to-graduate college friends and significant others, all of whom recognize now the urgency to make clearheaded choices that will permanently affect careers, family ties, love lives, and self-respect.

Not that any of Felicity's familiar characters are prepared for that kind of Hamlet-like pressure. Bad judgment, impulsiveness, the flotsam of unresolved relationships, envy, and selfishness are still driving forces behind the mercurial actions of art major Felicity Porter (Keri Russell) and her off-and-on boyfriend Ben Covington (Scott Speedman), former beau Noel Crane (Scott Foley), cynical pal Meghan Rotundi (Amanda Foreman), the latter's well-meaning hustler of a partner, Sean Blumberg (Greg Grunberg), and assorted students and confidantes who comprise Felicity's inner circle. But the stakes are much higher this time. Ben's alcoholic father (John Ritter in a sympathetic, touching performance), in true medical trouble, can no longer be angrily dismissed by the younger man as in previous seasons. A careless fling between Felicity and Noel is no mere bump in the road anymore for the former and her true love, Ben. Nor is Ben's imminent fatherhood (he and the young addict his father is sponsoring become pregnant) the kind of inconvenient wrinkle Felicity invariably forgave in the past. Everyone is playing for keeps now, and the absorbing dramas and tensions in each well-written, constantly surprising episode have an air of finality about them. Things get particularly interesting--arguably controversial--in the last two or three scripts, in which an anomalous time-travel gimmick (of all things) gives viewers an opportunity to see alternative finales for the four-year-old series. It's a go-for-broke idea that asks Felicity's loyal audience to take a leap of faith just to see what happens, and the results are indeed unexpected and rewarding. Special features include a particularly good, behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of the last episode. --Tom Keogh

Editorial Review:

Matt Groening's second season of the 31st century sci-fi sitcom Futurama maintained the high scripting standards of the first and also well brought improved digital animation. Couch potato Fry now seems thoroughly reconciled to his new existence, transported 10 centuries hence to "New New York" and working for Professor Farmsworth's delivery service. He's surrounded by a cast of freaks, including the bitchily cute Amy (with whom he has a romantic brush) and Hermes, the West Indian bureaucrat. Most sympathetic is the one-eyed Leela (voiced by Katey Segal). Like Lisa Simpson, she is brilliant but unappreciated; she finds solace in her pet Nibbler, a tiny creature with a voracious, carnivorous appetite. By contrast, Bender, the robot, is programmed with every human vice, a sort of metal Homer Simpson with a malevolent streak.

In one of the best episodes, Bender is given a "feelings" chip in order to empathize with Leela after he flushes Nibbler down the toilet. Elsewhere, Fry falls in love with a mermaid when the team discover the lost city of Atlanta, Fry and Bender end up going to war after they join the army to get a discount on gum, and John Goodman guest stars as Santa Claus, an eight-foot gun-toting robot. Brimful with blink-and-you'll-miss-them hip jokes (such as the sign for the Taco Bellevue hospital) and political and pop satire, Futurama isn't a stern warning of things to come but rather, as the makers put it, "a brilliant, hilarious reflection of our own materially (ridiculously) overdeveloped but morally underdeveloped society." --David Stubbs

Editorial Review:

With this third season, Frasier scored an impressive hat trick, winning its third successive Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. You don't need too much analysis to get to the bottom of this unprecedented success. The series was a primetime oasis of wit and sophistication, with welcome forays into farce that pricked Frasier's bubble of pomposity. His priceless reactions to the assaults on his dignity are worthy of Jack Benny. Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) can be infuriating, as in "The Focus Group," in which he is obsessed with knowing why a lone focus group participant (guest star Tony Shalhoub) doesn't like him. But he is also endearing in his delusional view of himself as, in the words of one mocking bystander, a "man of the people." Frasier meets his match in new station owner Kate Costas (Oscar-winner Mercedes Ruehl). Their combative relationship turns to lust over the course of the first 10 episodes.

But the season's most pivotal story arc is the separation of Niles (David Hyde Pierce) and Maris. "Moon Dance," which marked Grammer's directorial debut, is a series benchmark, as a crestfallen Niles tangos with his unrequited love, Daphne (Jane Leeves), at a high society ball. Not that the Crane family still doesn't have issues to work out. Frasier cannot abide being beaten at chess by Martin (John Mahoney) in "Chess Pains." Frasier and Niles ill-advisedly go into joint practice in "Shrink Rap," and find themselves on the opposite sides of a sanity hearing in "Crane vs. Crane." Lilith is sorely missed, but in this season's blast-from-the-past episode, Shelley Long returns in "The Show Where Diane Comes Back." It is a joy to see Cheers resurrected, if only in Diane's self-absorbed new play, which Frasier agrees to back. And any episode with Frasier's amoral agent Bebe (Harriet Sansom Harris) is must-see television. Frasier's humor was character-based, rather than topical, giving it a longer shelf life. For those who lament the end of one of television's gold standard series, this boxed set will be excellent therapy. --Donald Liebenson

farscape conclusion 3 out of 5 stars.

This was the conclusion to the series made later on, too long after the series was cancelled. They did a good job of concluding the story, however the majic of the regular season episodes was partly lost and it seemed like too many battles and not enough drama. Too bad the sci-fi channel cut it down in it's prime. Farscape was one of the best shows ever on TV.

Farscape: The Peace Keeper Wars 4 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed the premise behind this movie. I have only one real complaint. At the end it stated to be continued and so far I haven't seen a part two.

A satisfying chapter... 5 out of 5 stars.

...of one of the best sci-fi shows of all time. I won't say "end," but if that's how posterity remembers PK Wars, it could have done much, much worse.

Peacekeeper Wars, in short, does a superb job both tying up all dangling plot threads from the Farscape series and leaving openings for wherever the franchise goes next. The special effects, considering that it's a miniseries, are spectacular. The writing is even better--PK Wars loses nothing in the transition from show to miniseries. The characters are their same, bizzarre selves, except on a bit larger scale. The caliber of performance, from everyone involved, is excellent--but that was only to be expected.

That said, PK Wars is NOT a good selection if you're looking to discover Farscape. You will likely leave your experience extremely confused, irritated, and perhaps a bit ill from the overall weirdness of it all. Farscape, unlike Star Trek or many other shows, cannot be picked up at any time--it is very much an arc show, and each episode, although not necessarily a "sequel" to the one before it, very much builds on the character relationships developed previously. The dynamic between all of the members of the spectacular Farscape cast cannot be immediately understood; it's usually too complex and bizzarre for that. PK Wars is very much the conclusion to one ongoing story, (that is, the arc of the original Farscape series) and can no more be watched first than "Return of the King" can be read before the other Lord of the Rings books. That's just...ooh, a terrible thought.

So, the best possible soltion: Watch the rest of the series first! (This is assuming the reader is new to the show. If you are already a Farscape fan: trust me, PK Wars is completely worth it. Every bit as witty and fast as the best parts of the show, and extremely poingnant. Absolutely well done!) Farscape is primarily a show based on relationships and interactions; the plots are fantastic and gripping, but would mean very little without the chemisty and/or tension between the characters. Given the proper time and order to develop, these dynamics will reward the watcher with one of the most complex and thoroughly enjoyable emotional tangles ever to grace your television. (or laptop, or iPod, these days...) But ONLY then. Give the book a chance before you read the epilogue; the ending is only as good as the middle makes it.

And this particular middle makes for one of the best--and most fun!--sci-fi chapters ever written, acted, or viewed. You won't regret your patience.

Editorial Review:

Frasier's fourth season was mostly about relationships. Niles (David Hyde Pierce), now separated from Maris, is back on the market like his bachelor brother, Frasier (Kelsey Grammer). That's great when the pair goes to a cabin with a pair of fetching women (Megan Mullaly, later of Will and Grace, and Lisa Darr), but Niles is never able to completely dispel his attachment to his suffocating wife... or to Daphne (Jane Leeves). His obsession with the latter gets an immediate burst in the season's first episode, in which he has to masquerade as Daphne's husband, then later comes to a head when she appears at his apartment door asking to stay the night. The boys have the usual disputes with their father (John Mahoney), including their disdain for the former cop's new girlfriend, Sherry (Marsha Mason), the boisterous, banjo-twangin', "gotcha"-playing bartender who would remain a regular cast member through the end of the series. Ex-wife Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) makes her annual appearance, this time when she and Frasier try to get Frederick into an exclusive prep school. And the title character? As much as Frasier teases his producer Roz (Peri Gilpin) about her dating habits, he himself is lonely, leading him to a memorable airport encounter with guest star Linda Hamilton and a season finale that proves a kind of a harbinger to the series' final episode. This season made Frasier a perfect four-for-four at the Emmys, winning its fourth consecutive award for Outstanding Comedy Series. Unlike previous seasons, this DVD set has no bonus features. --David Horiuchi

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air - The 1992-1993 season (Season #3) 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am 11 Years Old, and I Love the "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air", In The 1992-1993 year, more comedy rolls in with Will (Will Smith) returns from Philadelphia with a new look, accepting gifts from a plain nerdy school girl, Special Guest Star, Sherman Hemsley (TV's "Amen" and "The Jeffersons"), stars as Judge Carl Robertson, running against Uncle Phil (James Avery), for Supreme Court Judge in the first four episodes, but returning his bigoted, and strong-willed role as George Jefferson in 1995, Hilary (Karyn Parsons) finds kisses and a job reporting weather, with her new co-anchor, Trevor (Brian Stokes Mitchell, TV's "Roots"), Ashley (Tatyana Ali) dresses outreageously to impress a boy (Larenz Tate, "Why Do Fools Fall In Love", "Ray", "Menace to Society"), Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro "TV's Silver Spoons") becomes a father to his ex-girlfriend, (Lark Voorhies "Saved by The Bell"), Geoffrey (Joseph Marcell) wins the jackpot, leaving the Banks' family, but soon realizes, that Carlton and Will tricked him into winning the lottery, More Special Guest Stars, Vanessa Williams ("The Jacksons: An American Dream", "Johnson Family Vacation", "Light It Up"), Kim Fields (TV's "Living Single" and "Facts of Life"), D.L. Hughley (TV's "The Hughleys").

The 3rd Season Jumped the shark, when Janet Hubert-Whitten, who portrays mother and wife, Vivian Banks, left due to a salary dispute with cast members, and pregnancy to her child, after the episode "The Way We Were", that marked Janet Hubert-Whitten's final appearance on the show, in the last couple of episodes to come in the third season, her character was explained by written out, until the new cast member replaces her as the New Vivian Banks (Daphne Maxwell Reid, TV's "Snoops", "Frank's Place", "CBS' Summertime Playhouse") in The Fourth Season until the last episode in 1996. I Still Loved the show, and i will hope that i will get the 3rd Season, Sometime to come!

Ready for Season Five! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I love Fresh Prince of Bel Air and have all of the first four seasons which are great! I had forgotten some of the hilarious episodes! I just wish and hope season five would come out soon! We're anxiously awaiting the release!

The beginning of the end of "The Fresh Prince" 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

"The Fresh Prince" was a great show during its first three seasons. The fourth season was good, and still pretty funny, but true Fresh Prince fans know that this was when the show started its swan song. First of all, the real Aunt Viv was gone, replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reid. The Vivian Banks character was useless from that point to the end of the series. Next was the addition of the new child, Nicky, which only brought the morale of the series down even more. Like "Fresh Prince" really needed another kid. The Nicky character was useless as well. Will and Carlton are pretty much the same, Ashley (she can sing!) finally shows some depth, and Uncle Phil shines, becoming, in a sense, the true heart and soul of the show. The fourth season really offers very few classic Fresh Prince episodes, but there is still some good entertainment here, and a few memorable moments: Carlton experiencing heartbreak from his first lover, Uncle Phil taking Will and Carlton to court, Will attempt to book Boyz II Men to perform at Nicky's christening, one of Uncle Phil's old flames honing in on Will, and the return of Will's father, who talks a big game but ends up leaving Will in heartbreak, leading to one of the most heartfelt scenes in the show's history (Will's teary testimony to Uncle Phil still gives me chills). So, this season is not without its moments, but the best days of "The Fresh Prince" are clearly behind it.

And by the way, the final two seasons of this show need to be released. It has been over a year since this DVD set was released and nothing new has come from "The Fresh Prince". It is stupid that this show has been put on ice while worse shows have seen full-series runs. Give the people what they want.

I absolutely and positively love this show, so there is no other rating to give it than a 5 star. I recommend you start from the very beginning so you are very familiar with the characters. Dr. Frasier Crane never disappoints.

Futuraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaama 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The 3rd installment/volume of Futurama is as good or better than all the rest. I won't go into each and every episode - quite a few have already done so (better than I ever could). What I will offer is an opinion on the series itself. It's essentially the Seinfeld of animated series. Most, if not all, episodes have infinite longevity. From Fry's endless obsession with Leela to Bender's constant black humor. Zoidberg's self-deprecating humor matched with Farnsworth's constant 2nd place finishes. Amy's pseudo-naivete paired against Kiff's subtle bumblings. Santa-Bot's paradoxical ravings infecting the drunken, whimsical elves (like something out of a Tim Burton "nightmare"). Hermes' steady, Jamaican, taskmaster personality controlling each situation with effectiveness. This series has infinite influences to numerous to fully capture - so I'll stop trying. Futurama has a devoted fan-following for countless reasons. Just watch it - you'll be hooked.
