Editorial Review:

Celebrated as one of America's funniest and most popular entertainers, Ellen DeGeneres stars in the fifth and final season of her Emmy Award®-winning ABC sitcom ELLEN, the history-making show that put her at the center of the comedy map. Universally acclaimed and now officially out of the closet, ELLEN: SEASON 5, finds the beloved 30-something bookstore owner, along with her cadre of loyal friends, goofing it up more than ever. Effortlessly balancing life's obstacles with trademark-inspired buffoonery, each episode boasts a surefire mix of quirky warmth and unbounded hilarity. Aided and abetted as always by Adam (Arye Gross), Spence (Jeremy Piven), Paige (Joely Fisher), Joe (David Anthony Higgins), and Audrey (Clea Lewis), Ellen Morgan (DeGeneres) continues to manage life as Ellen, extricating herself from one absurd situation after the next. Featuring all 22 episodes from its critically acclaimed fifth season, ELLEN: THE COMPLETE SEASON FIVE DVD SET is stuffed with memorable cameos by Sean Penn, Jennifer Aniston, Woody Harrelson, Phil Donahue, Emma Thompson, Anne Heche, Cindy Crawford, Sara McLachlan, Kevin McDonald, David Anthony Higgins, Angie Dickinson, Louis Gossett, Jr., as well as two special tribute episodes and more!

The Other Ellen TV Series 3 out of 5 stars.

This has a nice small-town feel. Has some laughs. Has good supporting cast, especially, Ms.Cloris Leachman who is just excellent.

enjoying it 5 out of 5 stars.

We really loved the older Ellen series so while this show isnt as good, it's definitely worth the cost of the series on DVD. It's nice to see a "new" (to us) series - we didnt see it when it aired. We travel with a portable DVD player and it's nice to have something like this to watch that's in manageable sizes (unlike a movie). I give it a thumbs up - if you're an Ellen fan.

It even has a catchy theme song... 5 out of 5 stars.

What a great DVD this is to have in your collection! "The Ellen Show" is fun, smart, sincere, sweet and often downright hysterical. Back in 2006 I bought this, but somehow didn't open it until recently and boy, am I glad I did...it helped me get through a bad cold...it was the perfect medicine!!

Sometimes all you need to see is that "I know something you don't" twinkle in Ellen's eyes and you just start to laugh. The woman has talent, there's no doubt about that and it can be seen in almost every episode found on two discs.

Some of the best ones include the pilot where Ellen returns to her hometown after her dot com business goes bust and finds a quirky bunch of people, both in her family and her co-workers. These folks have no concept there's a whole world to be found outside the small town of Clark. It's this mindset, of course, that helps fuel the humor of the show.

Other terrific titles on the first disc include: "Walden Pond" (Ellen becomes Clark's high school guidance counselor and bonds with a troubled student)..."Vanity Fair" (contains a cute mix-up involving beauty salons and animal hairstylists...gives new meaning to "best in show")..."Missing the Bus" (I'm a bit biased here since I love Betty White, but still it's a super episode AND with a young Dakota Fanning who steals your heart as a young Ellen in flashback).

A strong supporting cast carries "The Ellen Show" far above the bad treatment it received from its own network (how a tv program like this got cancelled when "Yes, Dear" went on to have four seasons is beyond me!)

The lovable, if terribly misguided set of co-workers are played to comedic charm by the ever-reliable Martin Mull ("Mr Munn"), the surprisingly gifted Kerri Kenney (as "Pam" the awkward, but ultimately kind home ec teacher), the adorable Jim Gaffigan (who is more than suited for the role of teacher-of-all-trades "Rusty") and the much-loved Cloris Leachman (who is just wonderful and endearingly daff as Ellen's mom.)

The second disc is not to be missed either. "Ellen's First Christmas" offers us the delightful Mary Tyler Moore (just as much an influence on Ellen DeGeneres as Lucille Ball, I imagine)..."Just the Duck" captures the dilemmas singles face living in a small town and serves up some very bright moments of humor when Ellen attempts to dine alone at a fancy restaurant and finds plenty of patronizing pity on her plate..."Shallow Gal" speaks to all of us who weren't quite right with in the "in" crowd back in high school and secretly want a second chance (guest star Maureen McCormick couldn't have been better cast...I mean, it's "Marcia" we're talking about)..."Where the Sun Doesn't Shine" gives us a strong Cloris Leachman performance and proof that she has never lost her timing or her shine when it comes to delivering a great line.

My only disappointment here is that there are no extras (can you imagine the interviews they could have done?) and that there isn't more to love. "The Ellen Show" is a reminder that we need to save the sitcom before it dies for good.

Made for the MTV crowd 2 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

I suspect the five-star reviews of this DVD were written by spammers working for the company that sells it.

These compendium DVDs are routinely made by stupid jackasses who figure our attention span is only 10 seconds (the MTVers) so there's no point in showing an entire performance. What we get here is Carol Burnett talking about Ed Sullivan and occasionally throwing out little snippets of the acts. We get only a few seconds of the comedians and novelty acts, though they sometimes provide a whole song, other times a fraction of the song. This format is so annoying I didn't much like the DVD.

Partial Performances 1 out of 5 stars.

Why would you entitle a production "Unforgettable Performances" and then forget to include a single performance in its entirety?

The really really big sheww 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Watching Ed Sullivan on Sunday night was an American tradition. He came out with his squinchy little body and his upraised hands and told us all that it was going to be a 'really big really big sheww' . 'Let's hear it for Curtis Le May from SAC. He 's going to bomb the Commies into Smithereens' Down there in the front row say a big hello to one of the great champeens of all time. Let's hear it for Jack Dempsey'
Ed would begin that way introducing the celebrities and warming us for Toppo Gigio the Little Italian Mouse or for , a young man from Memphis , Tennessee ( Ed could hardly hide the distaste as he pronounced the words ) Elvis Presley. "
The video contains records of some of the highlight performances, and also an interview with Ed and his wife Sylvia.
Highlights are wonderful, but my sense is that putting together a package in which the complete shows as they came on at the time would give a dimension no excerpts can.

Share the excitement of Elvis Presley's earth shattering introduction to the nation in these three unforgettable episodes from The Ed Sullivan Show, now on DVD for the first time ever, and experience for yourself why Elvis became the legendary King of Rock and Roll! Appearing on the show Sept. 9, 1956, Elvis sent shock waves through a repressed nation with his soulful singing, wild hip gyrations and raw energy, attracting a record-breaking TV audience of more than 60 million people. Presley returned on Oct. 28, 1956, continuing to provoke ecstatic screams with hits such as "Don't Be Cruel," "Love Me Tender" and "Hound Dog." In fact, these exhilarating performances were so explosive that Elvis was filmed above the waist during his final Sullivan show appearance on January 6, 1957.

Rockin' Special Features:

A rare home movie capturing a very early Elvis performance, shot on August 7, 1955, at Magnolia Gardens near Houston, Texas Elvis and Ed remembered. Elvis is on his way! Ed Sullivan Show clips. Special Elvis moments including an appearance by comedian John Byner Home movies of Elvis and Priscilla, Elvis and his friends cutting up on a film set and some of the first shots of daughter Lisa Marie

I enjoyed it but not as good as the first two 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Chris has grown up with the show he must be going through puberty, his voice sounds very different now. I loved the first 2 seasons but I must say season 3 is little slow pace and not as fun as the first two.

They have developed a several characters in the show (babershop boys, homeless guy, etc) but I personally dont find them funny at all. I think the dad & mum are great though, brilliant actors!

25-30 day wait 1 out of 5 stars.

If you wish to make a purchase form this seller(Royal Video) please flee... It took them over 20 days to ship my product. Remember they get their money before you receive your product. It was very misleading when told your order will be shipped two to three days later (and not).. If you are willing to wait 25 to 30 days for your order then go ahead and order from them (Royal Video)....(Purchased on 09/23/2008 received on 10/21/08) Only after I contacted AMAZON did I receive my product. I emailed them on two different occasions to check on my order and I didn't even get a kiss my toe response back. I wish I hadn't ordered form them at all. Unpleasant experience / wait.......

Surprisingly Wonderful 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Clip shows tend to bore me, but this one is creatively edited from years of Christmas Specials. These mostly color vignettes are a delight for those who remember the performers as well as younger folks who may not have been around.

True variety abounds with song, including a German children's choir that sings in English more perfect than one hears from many American choirs, and delightful comedy bits. This collection is a charmer.

The brief 47 minutes flys along with not a dull moment. Included is a clip from Bing Crosby's original movie rendition of "White Christmas" disolved into a live performance. Rich Little gives a classic remembrance of George Burns, Jack Benny and Ed Sullivan himself. (Sullivan, who visually projected as very tall, was in fact not tall and we briefly see that as he stands alongside Little.)

Connie Frances, who knew how to take the time to "sell" a song, is featured in a show Sullivan took to Cuba to entertain our troops. Ventriloquists, Sheri Lews and Senor Wences are there as well as a couple of classic Muppet performances and Alvin and the Chipmonks. Lots of notstalgia and chock full of legends: Count Basie, Mahalia Jackson, Johnny Mathis, The Supremes. Each vignette is brief but satisfying with a perfect flow from one piece to another.

A genuine time capsule, delighful and uplifting. Nicely done. I'm so impressed, I'm ordering multiple copies to give as stocking stuffers next year.

Editorial Review:

This one hour special features some of the biggest classic holiday song performers to date including Bing Crosby, Johnny Mathis and Connie Francis. UH OH!!!!! Edited Versions????? 3 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I just purchased season 2 of "Everybody Hates Chris", and immediately upon returning home from the store, noticed these dreaded words on the back of the box.."SOME EPISODES MAY BE EDITED FROM THEIR ORIGINAL NETWORK VERSIONS." Not having seen these episodes during their network run, I have no way of knowing what, if any, scenes have been edited? And before I dare open the set, i'm hoping someone who did see them on TV before the DVD release can give a proper review and list any and all changes that were made? If there have been scenes edited out, i'd like to ask CBS DVD one question? WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY?????????????? It's bad enough that old time favorites like Happy Days and WKRP In Cincinnati, etc, are being released to DVD in severely edited versions because of corporate laziness and the greedy practices of the music industry? (hmmmm too bad we can't sue them the way they're suing us these days lol) But why in the world would there be a problem showing the complete, unedited versions on DVD of shows that were in their original network run only a year ago? Surely the silly copyright problems preventing older shows from being released uncut have been settled for the newer shows? Or should we just accept the fact that the loyal fans of these great shows will forever be screwed by corporations that will never give a damn about anything but our money?

Editorial Review:

Inspired by his childhood experiences, comedian Chris Rock narrates the hilarious, touching story of a teenager growing up as the eldest of children in Brooklyn, New York during the early 1980s. Uprooted to a new neighborhood and bused into a predominantly white middle school two hours away by his strict, hard-working parents, Chris struggles to find his place while keeping his siblings in line at home and surmounting the challenges of junior high. This responsible, resilient adolescent brings a distinct, funny spin to his everyday trials and traumas in this single-camera comedy.

My son wanted this for Christmas, so I bought it and found out afterword that he already had seasons 1 & 2. I kept the first 2 seasons, and have thoroughly enjoyed seasons 1 & 2, and await his return from college so that I can watch season 3.

Very nice set! 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this set as a gift for my boyfriend and he loves it! The set is very nice and includes not only the episodes, but also the previews and recaps. Additionally, the set has episodes you can watch with director commentaries. For a huge Entourage fan, this was a big bonus.

Great gift 5 out of 5 stars.
