Dresden Files did NOT suffer from low ratings 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Contrary to the popular MYTH being perpetuated by the SciFi channel, The Dresden Files, FAR from being a low-ratings failure, was actually one of SciFi's top rated shows that season, ranked third and BETTER and at least TWICE surpassing the ratings for their "flagship" original series Battlestar Galactica.

The show had a little bit of everything to appeal to a broad range of viewers... supernatural elements, detective/mystery, humor, action.... coupled with a superlative cast who's character chemistry was some of the best ever assembled and special effects that neither were overdone or too cheesy. The show was one that the entire family could sit down and enjoy... not many of those shows around these days!

While the show grew in popularity and viewership as the season progressed, for some reason SciFi chose not to renew it. A huge mistake on their part as the continuing popularity of author/creator Jim Butcher's novels and now graphic novel comics, as well as the brisk sales of the DVD is proving that The Dresden Files was a great show that was not given the chance to live up to it's full potential.

I heartily recommend this DVD and also might suggest to the editorial reviewer here at Amazon that they check their facts with the Neilson ratings rather than the biased propaganda distributed by SciFi in regards to the true ratings status of this show.

Editorial Review:

Based on Jim Butcher's best-selling novels, "The Dresden Files" chronicles the cases of no ordinary detective. Harry Dresden (Paul Blackthorne) is a wizard, the only one listed in the Chicago phone book. He's got a handle on the crimes that can't be solved by anyone else. Paranormal? No problem. Dresden deals in all matters of supernatural threats. If you need a little hocus pocus or some other worldly advice, Dresden's your man.

Best TV Series Ever!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Dr. Who is an amazing show and this season features some of its best episodes, with the two part "Family of Blood", and "Blink", which is the best episode in the entire series. The entire season is well written and well performed and its definitely worth buying.

I've got a fever and the only prescription for it is more Doctor Who. 5 out of 5 stars.

Great season and of course one of the episodes made me cry. I believe it was the "Gridlock" episode. I find this season to be the best season there is and I've already watched the fourth season. But very emotional, complex and exciting. I love this show. You go Freema girl!!

Editorial Review:

The third installment of Doctor Who is full of new thrills, new laughs, new heartbreak and some terrifying new monsters. From the moment the Doctor walks into the life of medical student Martha Jones he changes it forever. In Elizabethan London, they meet William Shakespeare at the Globe Theatre while back in present day London, 76-year-old Professor Lazarus recaptures his youth with consequences that threaten Martha's entire family. And, the Doctor's sworn enemies, the Daleks, who have been hiding in 1930's New York, return with a terrifying plan for humanity.

Dance video 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This tape is pretty good but the instructions are quick. Sometimes they aren't videoing what you should be doing at the moment so it takes longer to catch on what is going on with the feet. The challenge part especially--you get no instructions--just follow.

a frustrating work-out DVD and who needs that? 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

There is essentially no instruction in the dance steps - just expected to do it. Too fast-paced for anyone to catch on by watching unless they maybe watch it a few dozen times in slow motion. I will never do it again. There are much much better work-out DVD's available.

More Southfork shenanigans and Ewing Oil skulduggery in the much-loved legendary saga. 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 15 people found this review helpful.

The worldwide mega-hit drama that dominated the 80s returns with the wheelings and dealings of those entertaining and feuding oil-rich Texans in this Season 10 DVD of all the action from Southfork and Ewing Oil. DALLAS returns to its original formula of focusing on the charismatic Ewing family, their in-fighting and J.R.'s scheming. This dramatically vibrant season won the People's Choice Award for Favorite Night Time Dramatic Serial in 1987 and its quality scripts, tightly woven plots and imaginative storylines breathe new life into the show.

Larry Hagman puts on his famous Texan Stetson for another great performance as that lovable villain J.R. Ewing who this season engineers one of his biggest and sneakiest schemes in a plot to blow up rival Arabian oil fields and stirs up a hornets' nest of trouble. The Emmy-winning and legendary Barbara Bel Geddes, who is honored at the American Theatre Hall of Fame for her outstanding contributions to American theatre, displays her great talent as an actress when Wes Parmalee's shock Jock revelation causes Miss Ellie to battle with her family and her conscience. Linda Gray wonderfully portrays a fun and conniving Sue Ellen who sets up sultry Mandy (former Miss USA Deborah Shelton) as her company's sexy lingerie model in a revenge scheme against J.R. Patrick Duffy and Victoria Principal are reunited for their winning portrayal of the 80s supercouple Bobby and Pam who finally remarry after being apart for so long. In an episode written by cast member Susan Howard Chrane (Donna Krebbs), J.R.'s venom level rises against Cliff which sets another sneaky J.R. scheme in motion.

This is a fun and funny season with many humorous lines including some between J.R. and Sue Ellen! Ken Kercheval splendidly plays Cliff Barnes in a light-hearted style throughout this season which makes Cliff more interesting and amusing. Texas-born movie veteran Steve Forrest gives a convincing performance as Wes Parmalee in a storyline involving mystery, scandal and intrigue. Victoria Principal and Ken Kercheval both display their good acting skills in some strong and entertaining scenes together. Former model Sheree J. Wilson is good as the show's new scheming and money-hungry bitch April Stevens. This season's final episode - with the spectacular end-of-season cliffhanger of Pam's explosive exit - is Victoria Principal's, Susan Howard's and Deborah Shelton's last appearances on the show. The legend that is Larry Hagman won the Soap Opera Digest Awards for Outstanding Prime Time Lead Actor and for Outstanding Prime Time Villain during this season. This is a tightly-written and taut season and it also has many comic moments and some shocking ones too.

This tenth season is produced by DALLAS veteran David Paulsen (Writer, Director & Story Editor of DVD Seasons 6, 7 & 8) and is well-plotted and well-executed and it also smashed its competition of the new hit MIAMI VICE in the Nielsen's ratings every week for the whole 1986-87 season which demonstrated the success and strength of this Season 10.

Next on DALLAS in the Season 11 DVD packed with devious intrigue has a nastier and meaner J.R. Ewing who is up to his evil schemes and sinister plotting to exact his ultimate revenge on Weststar. There are 4 seasons left to be released on DVD of the world's most-famous soap opera.

Deadwood Season One 5 out of 5 stars.

I got this series for my husbands birthday. He had watched a few shows on HBO and was interested in seeing more. It is a very well done series - great acting, costumes, directing etc. It was interesting to see how the town of Deadwood started. If you can get past the profanity and the violence especially against women it is well worth the purchase.

From the begining 5 out of 5 stars.

I was hooked from the very first episode. I literally couldn't get enough. Literally. Good extras but a few more would have been perfect. This show, without extras, would still be a wonderful buy. Fun commentaries. I got this at a great price and have no plans to let anyone borrow these DVDs. I'd be worried sick. I love Deadwood!

As Always, Ellen performs as hoped for..., the show had the drama and humor we all hoped for... 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 20 people found this review helpful.

I was obliged to keep the fact that I'd seen the movie already to myself, a friend of mine, an actress (a friend) in the movie (I won't say who she was) showed it to me... needless to say it was previous to her narration of this segment of this interesting story (and I felt the story added to the progression of the story that was so much cut short by the buyout of Showtime by HBO). This show, Dead Like Me, developed by the same successful and amazing writer and producer/director as that of "Pushing Daisies", hit it right on, yet when Showtime got bought out by HBO, his amazing ability to understand gender on both sides went overlooked, and the amazing enjoyability of the show went likewise, overlooked!!!... needless to say, there is quite a roller-coaster of drama and comedy that got sold out and terminated by the A-typical masses of insanity, rather than the actual real folks of reality. You can't ask for more if you have any moral, emotional, and intellectual intuition... if you have all mentioned? buy/rent/watch this show... I guarantee you will laugh, cry, and enjoy this show. -Matt

A change of course 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Doctor Who altered its course with The War Machines. Rather than travelling to a distant planet to meet strange-looking aliens, or to Earth's past to encounter a significant historical figure, War Machines is set in comtemporary London, the swinging mid-60s, and it shows! For the very first time in the series' young history, the Doctor and his companion(s) face a modern-day threat, the first time, that is, when they are large enough to interact with the rest of the characters, unlike Planet of The Giants.

As Professor Brett states, WOTAN is ten years ahead of its time. Well, maybe not ten. Perhaps only five years, which would put it smack down in the beginning of the Pertwee Years, right next to a simlar story, Mind of Evil, about a machine taking over people's minds. If anything, The War Machines foreshadows the Third Doctor's era. Hartnell dabbles with electronic gadgets, works with the military (not UNIT yet, but very UNIT-like), and endures incompetent politicians to prevent a menace from taking over the world. Sound familiar? The Pertwee Years four years early. In fact, if you re-hash this script and use it toward another popular 60s TV program, The Avengers, it would feel right at home. I anticipated John Steed and Emma Peel to show up on my TV screen at any minute.

Incidentally, the notion expressed that Doctor Who finally has taken its intended form with The War Machines is about as bogus the Doctor's background being changed during the McCoy years to be something more than a timelord. The intended course in any series is how it originates, not how it becomes. The originators of any series always deserve the "intended course" label. This is not to say that the new direction of the show is bad, but let's not claim that this is where Sidney Newman & Verity Lambert envisioned Doctor Who going.

Basically, The War Machines steers Doctor Who in a new direction, a very subtle foreboding of the early 70s, worth every one of the four stars I gave it. However this story could have been a five-star beauty. How you ask? Where have you gone Ian & Barbara. The Doctor may as well have been companion-less. Dodo barely features at all, disappearing somewhere in episode two, never to be seen again. We are given the revelation at the end that she has decided to stay in London, and bids the Doctor goodbye by relaying a message through the new companions, Ben & Polly. As the Doctor says, that's gratitude for you, not even showing the decency to see the Doctor off personally after being given the experience of her life. Dodo should have gotten a more substantial exit. As for the aforementioned new companions, Ben & Polly fit in with the swinging 60s era, and Polly is pleasing to the eye, however they are no Ian & Barbara. In retrospect, War Machines could have been the perfect swan song for Ian & Barbara. I can just see them telling the Doctor that "we have decided to remain here" at the end of this story, fate having steered the Tardis back in their own time finally. An opportunity sadly lost...

Hit and Miss 3 out of 5 stars.

First let me say that I have been with Johnny and crew from the very beginning. I count myself as a fan. I sat fascinated during the early episodes, marveling both at the storytelling and cool special effects. By Season 3, the series was slowly losing its way. The acting was spotty, but mostly it was the uneven writing that stood out. Seasons 4 and 5 continued the slide down.

I have mixed reviews of the sixth and final season. During this final installment, the new writers decided to just scrap the main Stilson story line and go off on one-show adventures. Each hour introduces some new dilemma that Johnny must confront. Unfortunately, all of the other cast except Sarah are essentially removed from the show after episode 1 (I don't want to spoil things, so I'll leave it at that). The loss of the supporting cast is unfortunate, because it was the character interaction (Bruce-Johnny, Rev. Purdy-Stillson, etc.) that gave the show depth.

There are some decent episodes (Big Top, Switch, Outcome, and Denouement) and some poor ones (Heritage, Ego, Re-entry, Interred). One thing I noticed was that anytime the new sheriff is on screen, the show suffers. I don't know if it is her acting or the terrible lines she was forced to mutter, but it is painful to watch. Also, Sarah's hot and cold behavior towards Johnny and God forbid Stillson is completely out of character. It makes her come off as a needy widow in search of a husband and father for her kids - I'm sorry to have to even say that, but it plays out that way. If anyone would have told me that she would kiss Stillson, I would have probably not even bothered with the season at all.

Overall, I think this final season is an improvement over the last one. But it ends with things basically where they all started - nothing resolved - the world's headed back towards armageddon, Stillson is still at the helm, and we the viewers are not quite sure what is going to happen next. Everyone looks a bit haggard, but I suppose the actors must feel that way after the ups and down the writers have put them through. I enjoyed the Dead Zone, but in truth I had hoped for something more from the final season.

Written by Arthur Bradley, author of "Process of Elimination," - an erotic thriller that pits a martial artist against a world-class sniper out to shape the Presidential election.

It was a great season of a great show. Totally worth buying if you like a well written show, with a lot of mystery; love; comedy, drama and action. The cast is amazing and work very well together. It was a pleasant suprise to see that the acting was very good. This show is not how it appears or comes off. The comedy springs from the fact that it is written similar to a soap opera at times. Lastly, a lot of curve balls are thrown try and solve the mystery, its one fun show.

"Conformity is the only Freedom" says the Frog-man. 3 out of 5 stars.

First let me qualify that I loved the Peter Davison years (1981-84). The potentially disastrous transition from Tom Baker's longest running a 4th incarnation to Davison's Fifth. From the Doctor Who writer Terence Dudley who brought us such 80's plot train wrecks as the Black Orchid and the original Xmas special K9 & Co., we now welcome "Four to Doomsday" to DVD. Dudley's writing is the least of this episode's problems, as it happens this was the first story arc that the "new" Doctor would film, although it would follow the excellent season premiere of Castrovalva, it was truly the story Davison would explore how he was intending to portray the character. For this reason, "Four to Doomsday" is weaker, but for the very same reason it is worth owning to watch this awkward transition period. For his charter season, Davison's Doctor is very much like William Hartnell's 1st Doctor, not to mention the entourage of companions that both Doctor's were afflicted. The show's design and effects are quite neat, like the Doctor's spacewalk, the retro-pseudo-science helmets and the Monopitcon camera-critters.

The plot, if you can follow it between the Rave/World Music dance-offs, is something about a frogman Monarch, who has visited Earth 4 times, collecting people to make android replicas to distract him on his millennia-road trips. The Urbankans' leader, Monarch, is aided by his ministers Persuasion and Enlightenment. They are engaged in a overly-complex plan to loot raw materials needed to enable him to travel back in time confirming his belief in his own status as "creator of the universe." He intends to poison humanity, allowing him to use his androids as replacements on Earth. The Doctor ultimately uses this poison against the Monarch himself. Ultimately, the baddies plan never becomes clear, in spite of all the exposition.

The episode endings are weaker than the usual fare, the first part wraps with the appearance of android embodiments of companion Tegan's highly proficient "new wave" Earthling renderings, surprising, but hardly the point to wrap the show until next week! Counter to "Who" cliffhanger tradition, the Doctor actually doesn't any immediate threat until little over an hour in (crazy long by Who standards), and then it gets very BOND as the villain invites them to dine. But as if the apologize for this weakness, the closing moments of the story have Nyssa collapsing upon returning to the TARDIS, a cliffhanger leading to Nyssa being largely absent from the next story arc KINDA.

"Four to Doomsday" Drinking game...drink each time .....

...the Doctor loses his Companions, Sonic ScrewDriver...his way.

...the dialogue unleashes some amazing double entendres ...like Adric's gem, "He (The Doctor) knows I'm no good with my hands!" and several from the Urbankans, like "How can Earthlings have penetrated us?" or "Nyssa, relieve him" and "Is this one of your dropping times, Doctor?"

..the dialogue turns to heavy self-referencing exposition like Adric's non-stop rambling about the Timelords, TARDIS and anything else the Urbankans "Wanted to Know, but Were Afraid to Ask."

...the cameras cut back to a musical number.

...the action breaks for some Greco-Roman wrestling.
