Fantastic - but not the entire season and NO extras 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Anthony Bourdain is a real cook's cook and his wit really shines through in his TV series- No Reservations. The series is outstanding and there is nothing detracts from his show.

This first collection/season on DVD is fantastic but the thing that really "bites" (pun intended) is that the Uzbekistan episode is missing. Hence this is a "collection" of No Reservation instead of a "season". Was something so objectionable to that episode that it cannot be included in that set?! Everyone buys DVDs for extras and you would expect, well- extras. In this case, there are no extras. I would hope there would be out-takes, deleted scenes, additional commentary or behind the scenes but that is not the case. One feature that would be VERY nice would be the uncensored audio track in addition to the censored "bleeped" audio track that you could select as an alternative. Who wouldn't want to hear what Tony was REALLY thinking? :)

If you really like the series and don't already have a DVD-R, Tivo or digital copy, this is the best alternative. The production is first rate on this DVD series and the case design is outstanding. It's too funny that the Discovery Channel store doesn't carry this series at all. I can see a grey market for the missing DVD episodes from each of the seasons forming already...

Drunk, stoned, nastier than yesterday 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 18 people found this review helpful.

In past times, when I'm clearly outnumbered, I would just keep silent about my objections and opinions. I had a heart attack last year and now I am changing that. So, here goes about Absolutely Fabulous, my first viewing of the popular show that I heard so much about - even noted in this current edition of Oprah as a not-to-be-missed DVD series.

I found myself not laughing at all. Amazed, yes. Sad, yes. Puzzled, yes - especially that the audience was screaming with laughter and - eventually - actually applauding at all the abusive comments that were hurled - with no regard for anyone but the sender.

I'm sure this makes me sound like a bleeding heart and maybe I am, but this show is just not my idea of what makes funny, well, funny.

What am I missing here? I love to laugh as much as anyone. I have close girlfriends. I don't have a daughter (and if I did, I would be proud to have one like Saffy) but I do have three sons who are all kind, caring young men. I had a mother who was as immature and irresponsible as Eddie, so maybe I am one of the viewers who just kept waiting for things to "go somewhere" and they never did. People stayed stoned, drunk and abusive and stuck. Would someone please tell me what makes this funny? Are the Brits all that uptight that when they cut loose from that, it makes for uproarious humor? Is that it? It that what's funny to all those who obviously loved the show?

The writing was sharp and clever, in a "good retort" kind of way - if that's your thing. The production values were first rate. The acting was another story altogether. Nobody who doesn't have palsy or Parkinson's Disease walks like Eddie or moves her head and mouth constantly like Katherine Hepburn did in her later years. Her flailing, frantic arm movements were waaaay over the top and made it impossible to take her in - on any level. She was plain annoying. Patsy was Patsy and stayed interminably one-note in every episode. I'm a member of an international women's playwriting group and am a produced playwright. Basic in any script is that you have to show more than one side to a character if you are playing to any kind of intelligent audience. People change people. Events change people. Life changes people. Where was any evidence of this? The first show left me askance with my mouth open in disbelief, along with everyone else, but then I expected more to follow than a repetition of the formula: bored, drinks, drugs, shop, wake up bored and nastier than yesterday.

Absolutely Fabulous just didn't cut it for me. In fact, I returned it to the Library instead of making myself sit through the series - something I would have done in the past. Just for the record, and my opinion only, I think this show may be cathartic for those of us who never wanted to leave the old days behind, or for those who are still angry at the establishment or those who just plain have a pretty sick sense of humor.

Just wanted to make my vote count, along with all the rest, and am learning, late in life, that I don't have to like everything or shut up.

I love Alias, in this season, every chapter is very interesting, and you always end up wanting to watch the next one, rather than wait one week to see the next one.

This is the only show I want to watch, the whole five seasons of it.

A must buy!!

Well Put Together 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Season 3 of "The Andy Griffith Show" is perhaps the best constructed season of a continually well put together series. Additionally, Paramount did Andy, Barney, Aunt Bee, Opie, and the rest right by this very professional box set.

It seems like most of the time when one buys a DVD set the frills are gone; some do not even have a list of the programs included (except in the DVD itself). This not only has a list of titles, but a description of each episode. Furthermore, instead of easily broken compartments, the DVDs each rest in three individual cases (there are five DVDs for 32 episodes).

Season 3 has some of the most memorabilia "Andy Griffith" episodes, here is a brief rundown of eight favorites...

Mr. McBeevee-Opie tells tales of an extraordinary friend, but is he fact or fiction?

Man in a Hurry-This episodes features a man who is stunned by the slow-paced life of Mayberry; this installment has an almost-"Twilight Zone" feel to it.

Class Reunion-Andy and Barney organize a High School Reunion and Andy reaffirms the decisions he's made.

Opie and the Spoiled Kid-Opie pushes Andy's parental limits after a spoiled kid preaches entitlement to him.

Andy Discovers America-Andy makes history lessons fun after Opie's teacher blames the man for his son's lack of interest in the subject

Aunt Bee's Medicine Man-A charming salesman cheers a depressed Bee, but how?

Barney's First Car-Barney is duped by a seemingly sweet-old-lady in this hilarious episode.

The Rivals-Opie develops a puppy-love crush on Barney's girlfriend and the Deputy is NOT amused.

Great writing 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I had forgotten how enjoyable this series was. There are some great little things that will keep your interest and make you want to watch it again. The little details like Gomes pulling lit cigars out of his pockets. You do not notice all of them the first time you are watching it. The writing is very good and the acting, while it can be corny, is good also. It is well worth the money.

I loved this! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful set. The old programs are the best and some of these things will not be around forever. So if the original Addams Family series was somthing you enjoyed years ago, I completly recomend that you get this.

Steady Downfall, Good Interest. 3 out of 5 stars.

There seems to be nothing more terrifying to Sydney Bristow than waking up two years after she closed her eyes to find her world upside down: her squeeze married to another, a mysterious scar on her lower stomach, and two years of her life as material as a fairytale. As the season two closer, Bristow (played by Jennifer Garner) has woken up in a Hong Kong backdrop without any incilination of what has happened with her life.
The first episode holds the typical first episode feel: what has happened, and how can we fix it. Sydney finds herself strangely alone in a world she once found solace in. But as the script takes a turn for the worse, after a single day of going back to the CIA, she delivers a powerhouse monologue to her past love, Vaughn. I'm not sure if Michael Vartan is still the actor he once was in previous seasons, or maybe personal effects of his real-life relationship with Garner have surfaced onto the silver screen.
As the season progresses, and Syndey finds herself deeply entangled in the web of what has happened with her life, after waking up "like it was just one night", she finds herself fighting foes just as desperate as she to recover her memory, dealing with the day-to-day of working with Vaughn and his NSC wife, Lauren (well played by Melissa George), and finding how the terrorist organization of the season is getting so close to her life and her work.
Episodes that keep the ALIAS promise and remind one of the past two amazing seasons: Episodes 2-7, which draw their power from the state both Sydney and the viewer is in, mass confusion; Episode 9, a beautifully shot episode full of twists, turns, amazing sets and effects as Sydney goes throw an attempt to regain her memory by hypnosis; and Episode 22, the finale that holds more excitement than most, answering questions and asking new ones.
As ALIAS progresses, the seasons get less memorable with hard scripts and forced emotions, but this season a lot of emotional sympathy

Editorial Review:

The mystery and excitement reach unimaginable heights in ALIAS' spectacular third season. Special Agent Sydney Bristow awakens to an all-new world of intrigue from the very first moment of episode one, and her life is turned upside down as the action accelerates through the season's final frame. All 22 episodes plus must-see special features are included in this 6 disc set.

Where is Season 7? 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This is beyond ridiculous at this point. Millions of fans have anxiously awaited the release of these DVDs. What is the hold up?! Is Sony not planning on releasing the rest of the series?! Why release 6 seasons and stop there? Is Sony prepared to refund customers who paid good money for half of a series? I know that I did not start collecting these DVDs just to be left with an incomplete set. There isn't even any talk about a future release date, no news at all. What IS the problem? I think this is a digrace and I'm pretty much done with Sony. Customer satisfaction is obviously not a priority.

Editorial Review:

All in the Family centers on a working class family man whose conservative views of the world clash with nearly everyone he meets. The cast of supporting characters includes Archie’s long-suffering but loving wife Edith (Jean Stapleton); daughter Gloria (Sally Struthers), and liberal son-in-law Mike "Meathead" Stivic (Rob Reiner). In the sixth season, Mike and Gloria finally move into their own home and discover Gloria is pregnant. After the baby is born, Archie has the baby baptized without their permission. While driving a cab, Archie rescues a woman who turns out to be a transvestite, and Edith starts volunteering at an old age home. Guest stars this season include Billy Crystal, Doris Roberts (TV’s "Everybody Loves Raymond"), Robert Guillaume (TV’s "Benson"), Bernadette Peters and Betty Garrett, who won a Golden Globe® for her role.

For anyone who loves all in the family, As always it's funny and Archie is always there with a quick wit comment. I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of the show.

Editorial Review:

By the fourth season, Norman Lear's landmark series ALL IN THE FAMILY was on its way to becoming an American institution. It consistently ranked number one in the ratings while at the same time breaking all of prime time TV's taboos. Archie Bunker's (Carroll O'Conner) shocking politically incorrect diatribes, marriage problems for Mike (Rob Reiner) and Gloria (Sally Struthers), a breast cancer scare for Edith (Jean Stapleton) all broke with sitcom conventions. In the fourth season, Archie was hilariously faced with two worthy new opponents: neighbor Irene Lorenzo (betty Garrett), a staunch believer in women's rights, and loud-mouthed George Jefferson (Sherman Hemsley), soon to star in the spin-off hit series "The Jeffersons." Rob Reiner won an Emmy® Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and the show was nominated for four other Emmy® Awards for the fourth season.
