Tedious and Overhyped 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 6 people found this review helpful.

First off, let me start of by that ANYTHING with ron howard's involment is ment for average-to below average white people, who fancy themselves as being cultured or deeper than they really are. With that being said, I am not suprised that Arrested Development is a show that only hipster doofuses seem to enjoy.

To be fair, it's not the worst thing I've ever scene (family guy wins that distinction), but it is very boring, very lame and above all else, it's tedious. All the family memebers are so over the top, that they get annoying too quickly. The narration is really nasaly and annoying, the flashbacks occur way too frequently and really don't add to the hilarity--- for any situation.

I know there are many Arrested Development apologists who think that this is greatest thing ever, and if you don't like the show, you simply "don't get it". Oh, I got it okay. What is there not to get? It's a family of douchebags who have no redeeming qualities... BUT they're like totally quirky and they're running gags and stuff and blah, blah, blah. It just sounds like a piss-poor rip off of the royal tennenbaums to me.

Spend your money on 30 Rock, don't let the hipsters win!
...If you feel compelled to watch this show, my response would be "don't". But if you really must, then rent it first.

Abbott & Costello at Their Best 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: From the Secret Files of Harry Pennypacker
Shadow Watcher
Nobody Drowns in Mineral Lake

ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN may be the comedians' most popular movie, but that's not the primary reason to purchase Universal's new fabulous gift set, ABBOTT & COSTELLO: THE COMPLETE UNIVERSAL PICTURES COLLECTION.

All true Abbott and Costello fans, most likely, already have the studio's four previously released A&C collections in their DVD libraries. So, why buy this one?

First, this 15-disc set includes all 28 movies that the comics made for Universal, including IT AIN'T HAY (1943) which, for unknown legal reasons, was not included in any of THE BEST OF ABBOTT & COSTELLO sets.

Adapted from a story by Damon Runyon, IT AIN'T HAY is a fun movie, and contains such A&C routines as "Mudder/Fodder" and "Betting Parlor".

Second, unlike the earlier multi-problem, double-sided/double-layer discs in the BEST OF sets, these discs are single-sided with only 2 movies (rather than 4) per disc. No problems here.

Finally, this set is handsomely packaged with a large box that not only contains the DVDs (including one devoted to Special Features) in seven separate cases, but also a 44-page book that has fascinating background information and trivia about the comedians and each of their movies.

From ONE NIGHT IN THE TROPICS (1940) and BUCK PRIVATES (1941) through THE NAUGHTY NINETIES (1945), which contains the "Who's on First" routine, to ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET THE MUMMY (1955), is there a better gift for the Abbott & Costello fan?

The Andy Griffith Show - The Complete First Season 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

ABSOLUTE CLASSIC!!! There might not be a better show in the history of television than the Andy Griffith Show. The entire cast was phenomenal, the writing outstanding, the directing impeccable. It's simply amazing the perfection the show attained; sure, there were some glitches, there was an occasional lapse in continuity, yet the show is timeless. It captured its time perfectly & we can't help but to look back at it nostalgically wishing things were still this simple & problems so easily solved. Sheriff Andy Taylor seemed to be able to solve almost any problem & yet he was human also, making mistakes & sometimes even being taught a valuable lesson by his own young son, Opie.

The show's cast was one of the most capable ever assembled, in particular the casting of Don Knotts who would win five Emmy Awards in five seasons for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Ron Howard & Frances Bavier were excellent also. Other famous supporting characters included Otis Campbell, the town drunk (portrayed by Hal Smith, appeared in a total of 32 episodes), the only one who appeared in the first season; Gomer Pyle (portrayed by Jim Nabors, appeared in only 23 episodes); & Ernest T. Bass (portrayed by Hal Morris, appeared in only 8 episodes). Hal Morris would also direct several episodes. There were many more characters that had semi-regular roles but these were the most famous & popular. In particular, the character Ernest T. Bass's fame goes way beyond his eight appearances.

The first season of The Andy Griffith Show has 32 episodes, MANY of them are classics of the series, in fact, the first eleven episodes are highlights of the entire series. It's not until "Stranger in Town" that the individual episodes dip below the five star level. The episode "Opie's Charity" is one of the absolute best. There are way too many outstanding episodes to mention, there's not a bad one in the bunch.

There aren't any bonus features which is a shame considering the historical importance of the series. There are four discs in the set each stored in its own slim case. Each case has an episode listing on the disc with a synopsis. Good family entertainment doesn't come any better than this.

#1 In The Ratings, and funnier than the first season too! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

All In The Family's second season was the first to top the US TV ratings, with around 21.1 million households tuned in to CBS on Saturday nights. In this season (1971/72), Norman Lear's second comedy would premiere, NBC's Sanford and Son, which ranked #6.

Anyways, to the episodes (NOTE - episodes are in airdate order).

1. The Saga Of Cousin Oscar (18/9/71): Archie's Cousin Oscar has come to stay at the Bunker house and is driving Archie mad by hogging the facilities. Archie goes to kick Oscar out.... when he finds out Oscar's dead. 9/10

2. Gloria Poses In The Nude (25/9/71): Mike's artist friend Szabo comes over, who Archie is against for two reasons:
1. He's Hungarian
2. He does nude paintings
Szabo offers Gloria to pose in the nude, which causes quite a stir between Archie and Mike. 8.5/10

3. Archie And The Lock-Up (2/10/71): Mike and Lionel are planning a demonstration at the United Nations. The rally gets out of hand and Gloria, after seeing it on TV makes Archie go down to look for Lionel and Mike. Unfortunately, Archie is mistaken for a protester and is locked up. 9/10

4. Edith Writes A song (9/10/71): The family is at odds on how to spend the money in the family pot: Archie wants a gun, while Edith wants to set her song lyrics to music. Archie buys the gun anyway, even though the decision was for the song. Before Archie can return the gun, two black robbers break in and hold the Bunkers at gunpoint. 9.5/10
Special Note: One of the burglars was played by Demond Wilson, best known for his role as Lamont Sanford on Sanford and Son.

5. Flashback: Mike Meets Archie (16/10/71): It's Mike and Gloria's first wedding anniversary and an argument is brought up over dinner about the time when Mike and Archie first met. Enough said. 9/10

6. The Election Story (30/10/71): It's the local election, and the Democratic candidate happens to be a woman, which Archie is against. However, it's a little bit too late for him to vote... 8/10

7. Edith's Accident (6/11/71): At the grocery store, Edith accidentally crashes her shopping cart into a car, and leaves a not with her name and number. Archie is boggled, and just wants to get out of paying for damages. 9/10

8. The Blockbuster (13/11/71): The Bunker furnace isn't working to well, which makes Archie want to move to California, and Archie is convinced by a "blockbuster" to sell his home, even though Mike warns him. 8/10

9. Mike's Problem (20/11/71): Mike is stressed about his exams, and won't let anyone help him. Eventually Archie tries to help, but this make matters worse. 7.5/10

10. The Insurance Is Cancelled (27/11/71): Archie comes home one day with a tough decision to make: Which worker to fire? The hard-working Hispanic or the lazy White? Archie fires the Hispanic man, which leads to an interesting visit. Oh, on top of this the insurance gets cancelled. 9/10

11. The Man In The Street (4/12/71): Archie comes home in ecstasy because he's going to be on TV! Archie was interviewed by CBS News about Richard Nixon which becomes impossible to watch when the TV breaks down... 9/10

12. Cousin Maude's Visit (11/12/71): Archie, Gloria and Mike all have the flu and Edith is running herself down from looking after everyone. So she decides to call her cousin Maude (Beatrice Arthur) to help out, which infuriates Archie. 9/10

13. Christmas Day at the Bunkers' (18/12/71): Archie's in a slump because he didn't get his Christmas bonus, Mike and Gloria ask him what's wrong but that fails, also the Jeffersons' Christmas wishes fail, especially with Henry dressed up as Santa. 8.5/10

14. The Elevator Story (1/1/72): It's Edith's birthday and the family are at an Italian restaurant to celebrate when Archie just realizes Edith forgot to make a payment to the insurance company, which leads him to run over and drop it off. Unfortunately, Archie is stuck in an elevator with several people he does not like. 10/10

15. Edith's Problem (8/1/72): Archie, Mike and Gloria are shocked by Edith's rapid mood swings, happy one minute, cross the next. Gloria tells Edith she's going through menopause, which worries Edith that Archie doesn't love her anymore. 9.5/10

16. Archie And The FBI (15/1/72): A man shows up at the Bunker house one day and asks Archie about his neighbour Larry Grundy (Graham Jarvis). When Archie gets a phonecall from another neighbour about the investigation, he starts worrying the house is bugged. 9/10

17. Mike's Mysterious Son (22/1/72): Edith answers the door one day to a strange woman who ditches her 4 year old son, who supposedly is Mike's, off at the door. This infuriates Gloria as it appears that Mike may have loved another woman more than her. 8.5/10

18. Archie Sees A Mugging (29/1/72): Archie and Mike go down to the store to buy some things and on the way home, Archie witnesses a mugging. Although he doesn't want to get involved, Archie is eventually forced to by the police. 9/10

19. Archie and Edith Alone (5/2/72): Mike and Gloria have gone to a commune for a week, leaving Archie and Edith to spend some quality time together. The two begin playing cards but when Edith lets Archie win, he feels offended and a big fight begins. 9/10

20. Edith Gets A Mink (12/2/72): Edith's Cousin Amelia sends her a mink as a thank you gift for looking after her in surgery. Archie takes it the wrong way and tells her to give it back, which is when he realizes he can make a $300 profit. 9/10

21. Sammy's Visit (19/2/72): Archie takes up a taxi driver job to earn some extra cash, when one of his passengers is THE Sammy Davis Jr., and Sammy accidentally leaves his suitcases back at the Bunkers, Archie gets really nervous. 10/10

22. Edith, The Judge (26/2/72): Archie comes back from the laundromat one day angry as it seems he overloaded one of the machines, causing it to eat his clothes and cause a flood. The owner of the laundromat tries to make Archie pay for the damages, but he refuses. Edith is called to judge and see who is at fault. 9.5/10

23. Archie Is Jealous (4/3/72): Gloria is reading one of Mike's old love letters, which is when Edith tells Gloria about an innocent weekend she had with another man before meeting Archie. Archie overhears and demand Edith that she keep no secrets from him. 10/10

24. Maude (11/3/72): In the pilot for Norman Lear's third hit comedy (and first All In The Family spin-off), Maude, Archie and Edith travel to upstate New York for the wedding of Maude's daughter, Carol (Marcia Rodd, Adrienne Barbeau would play Carol in the actual Maude series). Carol and Maude are not looking forward to seeing Archie, as Carol's to-be-husband happens to be Jewish. 10/10

Cast:
Archie Bunker: Carroll O'Connor (RIP)
Edith Bunker: Jean Stapleton
Gloria Stivic: Sally Struthers
Mike Stivic: Rob Reiner
Lionel Jefferson: Mike Evans
Louise Jefferson: Isabel Sanford (RIP)

Overall, the second season easily beats the first, and it just gets better.
Highly recommend for those who loved the first season and want more.
Also check out Norman Lear's other shows, like Sanford and Son and Good Times.

Inspired lunacy 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

It's a shame that quality doesn't assure success. Case in point: Arrested Development, certainly among the funniest, most twisted sitcoms of all time. It tells the story of the dysfunctional Bluth clan, particularly Michael Bluth (Jason Bateman), who is trying to hold the family's crumbling real estate development company together despite the criminal indictment of his father (Jeffrey Tambor) and the blissfully oblivious weirdness of his free-spending relatives. This final season was cut short as the show finally succumbed to poor ratings, but it still delivers tons of laughs. The ensemble cast is uniformly brilliant and the writers put the characters in some amazing situations. Rumors continue to circulate that show creator Mitchell Hurvitz and producer Ron Howard may make a feature film. I'm skeptical that it will ever happen, but I'd love to be wrong!

Funny Show 4 out of 5 stars.

AD is just a fantastic show, and the second season is the best of the three seasons. You can watch these again and again, as there are so many great lines, allusions (and illusions...), etc. Top notch writing, acting, and directing - you can't beat it. COME ON!!

Excellent.. Too bad it did not get the ratings. 5 out of 5 stars.

For those who love baseball there is no better history of the greats from the past. It is great to see player on film that in some cases were gone before I was old enough to watch them play. You get a view of the old ball parks and uniforms. A must for baseball fans every where.

A must have for true baseball fans 5 out of 5 stars.

Doesn't matter who your team is, if you grew up on baseball and plan your week during the season around what games are on when, you need to get this DVD set. It will give you a new appreciation for the game.

The footage is great to see. Though I have seen alot of baseball footage, the home movie feel of this collection is special. To see the parks and how they looked "back when" was special.

Great job by those who put this together and a special collection for any baseball fan.

If you're a fan of Ab Fab this is surely the boxset for you. It has all of the episodes plus bloopers plus all the extra movies and interviews.

Really it is fabulous except for one thing- there are no subtitles in the episodes but other than that superb. I love the cover it comes in- it's like a really fancy diary, so cool.

Absolutely Hilarious!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Absolutely Fabulous is absolutely RUBBISH. This item does not deserve any star... I had to click something in order for my review to be valid. The first disc I tried to watch was not interesting at all. I did not like it. If not that by the time I popped the first disc in my dvd player, the return/refund period was already past, I would have returned it. Thus the discs will most probably remain unseen.

I would very much like to return everything.

best travel show on tele 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

If you do a side by side comparison with some of the other shows on the Travel Channel - say Samantha Brown or any of the cruise ship, theme park, beach vacation drivel - the contrast is startling. Bourdain is not a mainstream personality. He is sarcastic, cynical, brilliantly insightful and (mostly) real. His anti-vegetarian tirades do get old, and sometimes he seems to be pandering a little to every exotic culture he comes in contact with, but in general he is honest and genuine. He lets you see the irritation, fatigue and discomfort that comes with travel, instead of editing those parts out. So entertaining on so many levels. Bourdain is one of the masters of travel television, along with Ian Wright and Michael Palin.

Have 'No Reservations' 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

Collection 2 is an inspiring and informative series of episodes that goes beyond the usual formula "food culture" shows. I think it is genuinely transcendent. Bourdain's personality adds much to this adventure. The series' blending of social and culinary culture with Tony Bourdain's characteristic outlook makes this fantastic entertainment worth purchase.

Bourdain's Asian adventures (India -two great episodes - and Korea) were so good it took me several minutes to come back to reality. These segments stayed with me for days. I craved Indian and Korean food for weeks. They mix culture and food culture into the best shows I've seen yet.

A big surprise was the Northwest segment. I clicked it thinking "The Northwest . . . I should just get this out of the way." I was so impressed that I want to move to Portland! This was such a great treat. The segment on Beirut brought tears to my eyes. This series facilitated the realization that food is so much more than the kitchy shows you watch about which olive oil to use or what the "cuisine" of Tuscany is like. It demonstrates how fundamental food is to our lives, our family, and who we are as a culture.

No Reservations Collection 2 is even better than the first season - which was very good. I recommend it enthusiastically. It makes me hungry for travel and food, and touched my heart with every segment!

"Slippery breath inside banjo melted. Runny Smoky." 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

The Aqua Teen Hunger Force is back! Follow the antics of fast food in this hilarious, offbeat, adult cartoon. There's a Shake (Master Shake), French Fries (Frylock), and a wad of hamburger (Meatwad), and they are out to save the world when they aren't floating in their neighbor's aboveground pool. Their neighbor, Carl, is a disgusting, uneducated, sloppy fat, hairy, Jersey-speaking guy who wears a sleeveless tank top, sweats, and flip-flops.

This second season introduces some new monsters while bringing back some old favorites from Season One, like the Mooninites and the Plutonians. Each episode has an introductory scene from Dr. Weird and his assistant Steve, that are hilarious but have nothing to do with the show.

DISC ONE:
1) Mail Order Bride - Carl and Shake order a Chechnyan prostitute to marry, but she locks them out of the house.
2) Super Birthday Snake - Frylock kills Shake, Meatwad, and Carl, and they come back as zombies, but it turns out to be just virtual reality.
3) Universal Remonster - The Plutonians try to steal cable from the ATHF, but instead accidentally send a universal Remonster (a teddy bear made out of TV remotes) through the "Fargate".
4) Super Bowl - Meatwad wins superbowl tickets, and Shake and Carl fight over who is taking with him.
5) Super Hero - Shake steals toxic waste from the storage facility in the river to try and turn himself into Drizzle, a superhero. "$ex with animals? There's no time, man!"
6) Super Squatter - Shake doesn't pay the bills and moves next door with Carl when the utilities are shut off.
7) Super Spore - (My favorite from Season Two!) An alien blob named Travis takes over Shake by punching a tentacle into his brain. He also pees like a sprinkler. He wants a 401K, but doesn't do well in his interview because he's "sprinkling" and talking trash.
8) Super Model - Shake gets plastic surgery in Guatemala, but needs more so he turns to one of Carl's shady friends.

DISC TWO:
1) Super Trivia - Dr. Weird talks into a microphone with his bare hinder. The ATHF plays bar trivia with Wayne The Brain McLaine.
2) Super Sir Loin - Dr. Weird grafts a deer antler to his groin. The diapered spider who appeared in Season One as MC Pee Pants is back as Sir Loin, but now he is a diapered cow with a new scheme.
3) Super Computer - Frylock designs a super computer called the OoGhIJMIQxxXA! (He says it's a Klingon word) But the ball-shaped computer travels to the past and brings back Oog the Caveman.
4) Meat Zone - Meatwad can prophesy by touching people, but its just from eating caulk thinking it was cheese.
5) Cybernetic Ghost Of Christmas Past From The Future - The ghost of Christmas past, a bird-like robot, shows up at Carl's house. Carl's pool becomes filled with elfin blood, so he sells to Danzig the devil worshiper.
-- Extras include deleted scenes, commentaries, and a music video.

Though I think I liked Season One better, Season Two has one of my all-time favorite episodes, Super Spore. Perhaps not quite as inventive as the first season, the humor is still sharp and the fast food is still crazy. If you like Family Guy, Futurama, South Park, or Invader Zim, them you should get a big kick out of ATHF (though they still should lose the annoying theme music). Enjoy!
