Soars Then Falters, Still It's Great 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

We finished watching season two of 30 Rock feeling that the writers strike had put a damper on the quality of the final five episodes (pretty much all of disc two), and as Tina Fey explains, those episodes are missing out on the improvised dialogue that ordinarily spikes up every episode. Seems the actors didn't want to add even the slightest little thing, in solidarity with the striking scripters. So the last five episodes are a bit stiff and awkward, and on top of that the season arc had to be hastily erected and concluded in a much shorter number of episodes than it had been launched to last. Oh well, it's fine, but I'm just saying, the quality suffers a little because you're used to the Rolls Royce of shows, then suddenly it's just a tricked-out hummer. Shame because, in every other way, the season has seemed on the brink of topping season one with ease. The actors all seem much more comfortable with their roles, and Alec Baldwin is now in his own grand world of genius, in which he can say or do the craziest things and they all make sense. Tina herself as Liz Lemon must have rebelled against the way her stylists had gradually made her more and more chic during the finals episodes of season one, so she had become indistinguishable from the leading ladies of ordinary shows. Remember when that happened to Roseanne and all of a sudden Roseanne looked like Bruce Weber was photographing her for Vogue? When Liz was dating Lloyd it was the same sort of thing.

Now all that's changed and she is the hapless mess we adore, and she sticks with it, though watching her on season three's opener last night (when she is trying to adopt a baby from gruff, sadistic Megan Mullally) she had put herself all together and I was thinking, uh-oh, she's all glamorous again, but by the end of the episode things had fallen apart.

I don't know, but I'm sort of tired of Kenneth and would rather see more of Jonathan, but Jonathan himself is becoming much more like Lloyd--the other Lloyd, the one on Entourage. It's like writers in general think there's only two ways for male PA's to be, and neither of them are pretty. We didn't like it in the movies when Meryl Streep was so outrageously nasty to her assistants in The Devil Wears Prada, but on TV, and when it's a man who's doing it, it's all so super comical, but it sets my remaining teeth on edge.

Best Series - Best Deal 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

They weren't the best on continuity - they left plenty of loose ends after they left Earth, but face it - this was one of the best sitcoms ever on tv. They had the best cast and they best angle. I haven't had this many laugh out louds in years. I know Lithgow is the 'star' but everyone is in this series -- watching Tommy grow up is a trip in itself. Sally and her ever changing relationship with Don and the best of the crew, for me, is Harry. Living in a literal world and flat out slap stick comedy. It's very strange to see him in the bonuses, however, and see him with his eyes OPEN.

It's just simple, a little dirty and a different perspective of earth and the inhabitants with an talented cast. The most incredible actor is Jane Curtain start to finish; at times you just can't fathom how this woman can go from point A to D to JKLMOP then Y, Z in 4.2 seconds flat and she makes it look so easy. That's comedic timing and a woman with absolutely NO SHAME.

It's well worth the bucks and much better than ANYTHING currently on tv.

Editorial Review:

A group of aliens have come to Earth to learn about its population, customs, etc. To avoid detection, they have taken on human form which gives them human emotions, physical needs etc. WITHOUT the understanding of what they mean or the inhibitions normally present in humans. Their leader takes the position of a college professor, their military expert as his sister, their intelligence expert, supposedly oldest of group takes form of his teenage son. The uninhibited reactions turn everyday events into unusual situations.

They can't have 2 black men as supporting actors. 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I must say that the idea of releasing just a few episodes of 24 so that people who missed the shows and didn't record them is a great $$$ idea.

Once again suspention of disbelief is the key to enjoying this series. I like how Jack is tortured for two years and in two hours is all right. My uncle was in Hanoi Hilton for six months, and I honestly don't know if he has fully recovered. It certainly took him longer than a couple of hours. I certainly wouldn't give a man like that a gun and put him on a high security job. Oops, I lapsed into rational thought.

Aside from that, the rest of the eipsodes are great. It is going to be hard for me to like Jack now or think that he is a 'hero' for killing Curtis. I have to agree that the Yasser Arafat wannabe deserved a bullet from the man who's men he killed. I guess there's not enough room on the show for two black men. The new President better watch his back and make sure that CTU only hires white guys.

Since I have to wait until the rest of the DVD's are out to watch the other episodes, my hope is that Kim will return to the show only to be killed. I would have given this 5 stars if it had happened in the first 4 hours!

They are going to split up THIS series into two volumes?!?! I may be done buying television show DVD sets. Greedy a-holes....

Great show! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a brilliant show- they can spoonfeed me a few episodes every couple months and I'll be happy! Hollywood, please pay your writers for their internet work- you know you'll make money on it eventually. You're forgetting that the writers are the reason you will make that profit at all!

Kinda lame 3 out of 5 stars.

This show was okay funny, not my cuppa. The comedy Nip and Tuck is more what I prefer. So-so.

Good anime 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Since I am a big fan of the original Jing, I had to own this one as well. If you have seen the first and liked it, this is a must have. It tells of Jings beginnings and how he teamed up with Kir. It is, however, nothing like the original series. Good, but not what I expected.

Editorial Review:

Jing is the infamous King of Bandits. There is nothing he can’t get his hands on once he sets his mind to it, except this time he may be in for more then he bargained for! In this feature length anime, Jing must steal the famous Dream Orbs from the most dangerous and notorious prison complex in the world.

As if You'll Be Able to Stop Here 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

In a recent effort to get casual fans interested in their TV products on DVD, Fox has released two episode starter sets of several of their shows. Reasonably priced, they tempt the viewer to buy the first season and even provide a coupon for the purchase price of the sampler off the price of the complete first season if offered. The casual fan has little to loose.

Here, Fox is offering the first two episodes of season 1 of 24, the most addicting thrill ride on TV today. Just as the Bauer family is about to call it a night, Jack gets a phone call that sends him into work. CTU has a credible threat on Presidential candidate Senator David Palmer. Meanwhile, daughter Kim sneaks out for a night with friends and Teri goes off after her. And Senator Palmer is facing a potential blackmail crisis of his own.

This show did take a few episodes of fully suck me in, but the trouble with this set is it most likely will. If you are a marginal fan of the show, having two episodes just isn't going to cut it. You'll need to have the complete first season to have all of what happens next. And, of course, you'll enjoy every minute of it.

This is brilliant marketing on Fox's part. You'll be buying the complete set before you can say cliffhanger. That coupon is going to come in very handy.

Editorial Review:

Such a simple idea--yet so fiendishly complex in the execution. 24, as surely everyone knows by now, is a thriller that takes places over 24 hours, midnight to midnight, in 24 one-hour episodes (well, 45-minute episodes if you subtract the commercials). Everything takes place in real time, which means no flashbacks, no flash-forwards, no handy time-dissolves. Every strand of the plot has to be dovetailed and interlocked so things happen just when they should, in the right amount of time. Not that easy. Creator Robert Cochran and his team of writers and directors have done an impressive job of putting the jigsaw together and keeping the tension ratcheted up high, as federal agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) runs around L.A. trying to stall an assassination attempt on an African American presidential candidate and rescue his wife and daughter from the clutches of the Balkan bad guys.

In the second season, Jack is no longer on the government payroll; unfortunately for him, this small fact doesn't seem to matter to the president and the NSA, who call him back in to the CTU and give him 24 hours to infiltrate a terrorist organization that is planning to detonate a dirty bomb in the city of angels. Fans of the original won't be disappointed, as there are more than enough shock moments in the first few hours to hint at the climactic build-up to come, while newcomers can quickly get involved in the lives of Jack and his family.

In the third season--three years after the events of "Day Two"--a vengeful terrorist threatens to release a lethal virus that could wipe out much of the country's population. Jack attempts to broker a deal for the virus involving a drug kingpin, setting the 24-hour clock ticking in a tight, action-packed plot involving a potential traitor in CTU's midst. The intricately woven subplots that are 24's greatest strength are masterfully developed here, and character arcs are equally strong. It's 24's superior casting that overcomes the series' occasional lapses in credibility, and season 3's twists make marathon viewing a nerve-wracking delight. As always, Sutherland anchors the series in the role he was born to play.
