I am so glad there are only 2 seasons (so far) 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I can't get anything done. I have stopped writing. I have stopped editing my new books (both of them). I have sworn off designing Tarot decks, designing magical calendars, and forgot what supermodels I want to date when I am famous. Every night I come home after work and watch this damned TV show! My only hope for future productivity is that I will eventually run out of episodes.

But let me sum up: I don't watch TV. Yeah, yeah, TV paid my bills for several years when I was working with the wonder trio that created Friends, whatever... But I have sworn off of the box for several years now, with only the occasional relapse. But, this show is like crack! Well, having never actually done crack I suppose I am not specifically qualified to give any kind of formal declaration that this show is as euphoric and addictive as that powdery wunderkind of illicit intoxicants. Nonetheless! This show is like crack as I imagine crack would be if you dressed it up in a [...] suit and whored it off to [some random giant multi-national electronics conglomerate] executives in Times Square.

You just can't watch one episode. (Maybe this show is like a potato chip...) Tina Fey is some kind of super-sexy TV genius of our generation and her choice of casting is so spot-on that you literally feel as if you are relaxing in your favorite chair, just off-camera, watching the surreality of network television invade your day. Tina's (I call her that*) particular je ne sais quoi stems from a blend of intelligence, sexual frustration, floppy stance, and Sandra Bullock-esque cuteness that infects the very celluloid (digital just can't capture this level of warmth) the show's magic is captured on with all of the comfort of the sister you wish you had.

The rest of the cast is spectacular as well. My pathetic prattlings will not do justice to the level of humor and camaraderie everyone brings to the set for each episode. This is high alchemy the likes of Seinfeld or I Love Lucy. Without Alec Baldwin or Jack McBrayer (or any of the other hilarious cast members) the show wouldn't flow as seamlessly. The collective on-screen chemistry at play here comes across as both real and (as mentioned before) surreal, like "one of those days" we all face occasionally--but these are the norm here.

It is safe to say that this (and season one) makes an excellent gift for any occasion, and could be enjoyed by anyone with a sense of humor. The subtle innuendo of political views is backlit by the farce of Alec Baldwin's brilliant portrayal of a (platinum, presumably) card carrying member of the upper echelon of uber-right-wing elite media, which should not be confused with the so-called "liberal" media elite, who to the best of my knowledge do not make an appearance in this season.

If you only watch one TV show this year, watch something boring! THIS show will enslave you to the wonders of the 22-minute episodic visual comedy (er... "sit-com"). This show will make you believe in TV again. It will make you laugh so hard you will pee (and get lettuce in your hair, which is embarrassing if that happens in public). You cannot go wrong with this show. One day it will probably be proven to cure cancer. It's just THAT funny.

Thanks for reading.

The Rural Juror... Try Saying That 3 Times Fast 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Liz Lemon (you gotta love that name) is surrounded by chaos, and without her, the world would fall apart without somebody keeping it spinning and/or GE would lose tons of money. 30 Rock is simply a show about crazy, over-inflated egos, and the girl that tries to keep them all together. And while Tina Fey amazingly plays the straight girl (to the confusion, and bemusement of some), the show's humor comes from the out of control egos, from the dumb blond, Jenna, self-proclaimed mental, Tracy Jordan, and the Vice President of East Coast Television and Microwave Oven Programming, Jack Donaghy (NOT Donahy).

Amazingly, the only episode that is a complete mess is "The Pilot," but as the show progresses, and finds its footing after a mere 4 episodes. From there on out, it's brilliant. The show creates compelling and humorous storylines, crafting great characters along the way. The humor is not always prevalent however, especially in Liz Lemon's personal storylines, but the show certainly has its moments, such as the classic fireworks spectacular that you have to see to believe. The show also greatly benefits from pitch-perfect casting. Also surprisingly, the show doesn't misuse, overuse, or abuse its use of guest stars (in this season).

I must admit, it took 3 years for me to get into the show, but once you get into it, it compels you to keep pressing on. I don't really know why, or how they do it. They just do it. And the show deserves all the acclaim it receives, and yes, it deservedly beat The Office for at least this season. I look forward to spending more time with Liz Lemon, the best named character on TV.

PIRATED? 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 14 people found this review helpful.

If DVDs are sticking or stopping. . they are probably pirated . I have gotten ONE DVD "I'll Cry Tomorrow" that was pirated .. resolution should be Super IF not 'pirated and then it would be .. 'not very good' as well .. I was going to buy the set until I read the two reviews .. shame on you Amazon .. PRIRACY is ILLEGAL . people can be find $250k and up to 5 years in prison .. I think you had better WATCH from whom you buy .. if NOT put out by the studio .. AND Boxed sets usually have BONUS material on them .. Ala "Get Smart" put out by Time/Life for the first year . now Warner Home Video is putting out each year per year .. NO bonus material . but if someone copies the 'shows' from . Oh well.. Buyer beware! ..
I first bought the Susan Hayward Movie I wanted in VHS form .. I phoned Amazon and told them to get a tape that is bout 1" long is NOT an authorized/studio VHS .. they refunded the money and I chose a DVD of same movie .. resolution was awful .. I knew . but did NOT call again .. BUT if you are getting sticky .. jerky & bad resolution DVDs . Call them .. ask for refund .. tell them it is pirated and search the web to report the seller .. Now Perhaps these are NOT pirated . but a few were bad .. Just remember .. Buyer beware ! .. Too much of this piracy going on .. residuals NOT being paid to those who deserve them . and IF Amazon is buying in bulk from same person/company .. NOT a STUDIO . then 'that is the person the FBI wants to find . Fine & jail' ..

Not the best season you'll ever see, but still worth the purchase for those long-time Camden fans! 4 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

Well, it has taken a while, but 7th Heaven has finally found a company willing to release all the seasons on DVD, and if you can look past the music changes and occasional scene omissions, this is another good batch of Camden fun to add to your collection around Thanksgiving time. Although the show had passed its peak by the time Season 7 premiered, it still has plenty of nice moments in its favor, and one big advantage to an 11-year series like this is that we really had the opportunity to watch the characters grow up.

The classic 7th Heaven drama begins full-force right away by revisiting Eric's heart problems from Season 4. In lieu of telling his family that he will soon be having double bypass surgery, he slaps on a happy face and takes the whole clan to the bowling alley for some not-so-fun family togetherness, but his behavior is transparent to the one person who knows him best--his wife Annie. It's a beautiful, sad, yet heartwarming episode that highlights the best of their relationship and reminds you of what a good, loving marriage can be in today's world.

As for the kids, 22-year-old Matt is settling into married life, and former bad girl Mary pursues a different path outside of her childhood hometown, but not without making a choice that could be the best or worst of her life. Ever-emotional Lucy is in top form as she meets police officer and future husband Kevin Kinkirk, the man who drags her (and the audience) through months of misery by not proposing to her quickly enough. Teenager Simon starts dating a new girl named Cecilia and encounters a living nightmare in the series finale that might shatter his entire world. Lastly, in addition to starting an innocent relationship with her very first boyfriend, 11-year-old Ruthie is shocked to encounter the one person who is not willing to deal with her typical "Ruthie" behavior (think inappropriate eavesdropping and a generally superficial, I'm-smarter-than-everyone-in-this-family attitude). Hey, if anyone can achieve that with her, I say good for them! Personally, I think 11 was a little too young to be saddling Ruthie with a boyfriend, but the writers were obviously eager to do something about her budding maturity (if you can call it that), and this was a quick, easy way to do it. There's also 3-year-old twins Sam and David, the youngest in the Camden bunch, who don't do much except assist in showing how Eric and Annie spend each day dividing their attention among their five older children and chasing around two toddlers.

Season 7 introduces a slew of new characters that take a lot of the spotlight away from the core Camden family, which didn't sit well with all long-time viewers. Jeremy London steps in as Dr. Chandler Hampton, a guy who wishes to be part of the Church staff, despite clashing immediately with the wary Eric. The infamous Ashlee Simpson begins a recurring role as Simon's girlfriend, George Stults makes his debut as the lead man in Lucy's life, and Rachel Blanchard provides some interesting plot material as Kevin's beautiful blonde partner in the police force (as if we needed something that would make Lucy even crazier than she already is). Some other noteworthy guest appearances come from "Blossom" alum Mayim Bialik and former American figure skating champion Tara Lipinski, so be sure to watch for them, as well.

Overall, I have to say that characters like Chandler and Roxanne took a lot away from the show's original premise, but entering into their seventh year, with all the Camden kids getting older and moving on, I guess they had to do something to keep the story going. There is a special wedding in the middle of the season that is definitely one of the most memorable episodes ever, and as always, you do get a lot of those special little moments that make it worth viewing. Watching Eric shut down emotionally after his surgery and consider stepping down as Reverend will be shocking to anyone who has followed this show, and the impact it has on his wife and children is very honestly portrayed.

You'll want this DVD set for your collection if you've already bought Seasons 1-6, so order it while the price is good, pop a disc into your DVD player, and enjoy! I know I will!

At best this season is completely depressing 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Let's review: First season his wife dies. Third season he is forced to kill a colleage and go into hiding after faking his own death. Forth season his daughter hates him for "coming back to life" and oh yeah, two of his closest friends (who were also main characters) suffer and die. Fifth season he reconnects with the new love in his life and after ALL he has been through Jack finally has a chance at love again along with reconnecting with his daughter... But then he is kidnapped at the very end of the season and tortured for two years by the Chinese. Ok ok, I can overlook all of that but season 6 did NOTHING but beat the crap out of Jack and take EVERYTHING from him. The season ends with him overlooking a cliff ready to take his own pathetic life with the echo of "everything you touch either dies or is eventually killed" running through his head. Season 6 was not only poorly written as writers scraped the barrel and repeated everything they've already done, but they somehow believe it was a good idea to beat the crap out of the main character until the audience had no feeling left in them. At best this season is completely depressing and dragged out.
This review has nothing to do with Amazon.com, and everthing to do with 24.

Editorial Review:

In the irreverent tradition of My Favorite Martian and Mork and Mindy, Bonnie and Terry Turner (That `70s Show) created 3rd Rock From the Sun. Launched in 1996 as a midseason replacement, the alien comedy ran for six seasons, garnering 31 Emmy nominations and eight wins, including three for John Lithgow and two for Kristen Johnston.

In the pilot ("Brains and Eggs"), four extra-terrestrials suddenly materialize in the college town of Rutherford, Ohio. Disguised as humans, they dub themselves the Solomons. They are Dick (Lithgow), Sally (Johnston), Tommy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), and Harry (French Stewart). On the surface, Dick is a physics professor and Tommy is his hormonally challenged 14-year-old son. In reality, Dick is the high commander, Tommy (who's actually the oldest) is the senior information officer, Sally (who's actually a man) is the lieutenant, and squinty-eyed Harry is the transmitter/receiver. The humans in their lives include Dick's colleague--and object of his affections--Mary (Jane Curtin, Kate and Allie), secretary Nina (Simbi Khali), and landlady Mrs. Dubcek (Elmarie Wendel). The first season also introduces Officer Don (Wayne Knight, Seinfeld), who will appear more often in future seasons.

There were 20 episodes in the first year. In each, the Solomons learn something new about the human condition. In the debut, it's feelings. Dick finds them silly, until he realizes how essential they are--you can't be fully human without them. Then there's sportsmanship ("Green-Eyed Dick"), mortality ("Body & Soul & Dick"), and so on. Guest stars include Harry's dream girl, Martha Stewart ("Post-Nasal Dick"), The Gilmore Girls' Lauren Graham ("Dick's First Birthday"), and Newsradio's Phil Hartman ("Lonely Dick"). After the show's demise, the cast would move on to other ventures, most notably Broadway hit Dirty Rotten Scoundrels for the versatile Lithgow and independent drama Mysterious Skin for the grown-up Gordon-Levitt. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Buyer Beware! 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I bought this set solely based on the "Life Has Been Good To Me" number because I wanted to see it in 3D. (I had previously seen the clip on the internet.) I was quite disappointed to find that this glorious number had been cut at the beginning and end. So the people who have complained that these are the syndicated (cut) versions know what they are talking about. I feel like the product was misrepresented and I am considering returning it. The cuts in the shows make many of the transitions very choppy. I wish I had read all the Amazon reviews before purchasing this.

Funny Show! 5 out of 5 stars.

I thoroughly enjoy this show! I had forgotten how funny John Lithgow and Jane Curtin were! The rest of the cast is great too!

3rd Rock From the Sun is 1st rate fun! 5 out of 5 stars.

A little over-the-top at times perhaps but excellent entertainment just the same. Who'd've thought that John Lithgow, a gifted dramatic actor, was also a comedic genius? The rest of the cast was great too. Terrific sitcom.

Laughter is the best medicine...! 5 out of 5 stars.

Season 2 is one of Third Rock from the Sun's very best seasons! The comedy, cast and complete craziness merely continues! I purchased the entire set (6 seasons). You won't regret it.

Season three is a bit of a letdown. 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Because of jobs and children I rarely got to watch prime-time TV in the 1990s. So I missed a whole decade of TV and am only catching up now. Seasons one and two of Third Rock was a blind buy for me, and I was blown away by it. Being a fan of British comedy, I enjoyed the refreshingly non-American off the wall comedy. Lithgow is brilliant. Season two ended with a bang and a larger budget than usual. So I was looking forward to Season three. I'm only a third of the way through, and I am disappointed.
First, what was the point of doing the big-budgeted, one hour season ending of year two if they were going to resolve the whole story in less than two minutes at the opening of season three? That made no sense.
Second, I was able to swallow my EXTREME dislike of Rosanne and watch the two part season opener. Again, what was the point? Why break up the romance of Dick and Mary in such an uncomfortable (and implausible) way? I can only imagine the writers were going down the 'Cheers' path (romances breaking up and resolving multiple times) which has been done ad nauseam over and over again in American sitcoms.
'Scardy Dick' was one of the worst episodes yet. Dick has gone from child-like to whiney.
I can only hope the rest of the season improves, and I am looking forward to the John Cleese two-parter.
I give it three stars ONLY because of the brilliance of John Lithgow and the other cast members who are able to overcome substandard stories.

A science-fiction-themed sitcom 3RD ROCK FROM THE SUN looked at the absurdity of human behavior and society from the perspective of a literal outsider. Four alien beings have been transported to Earth in order to more closely study mankind. Landing in the town of Rutherford Ohio each member of the quartet takes on a human appearance forming the "Solomon" family: leader Dick (John Lithgow) sophomoric Harry (French Stewart) man-trapped-in-a-woman's-body Sally (Kristen Johnston) and eldest member (in the form of a teenage boy) Tommy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt). As they set out to examine the habits of the humans around them the team experiences the human emotions of love and loss and encounters many comic misunderstandings from their too-literal readings of human words and actions.
