Jumps the shark 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is the series that jumps the shark. At least twice.

The New Orleans family living in Larry's house. A transparent attempt to add some new regular characters to the format.

A John McEnroe cameo.

The Larry Eye stare "are you sure?" contest has got old too as as the "Prrrretttty Good" shtick.

It's still laugh aloud funny in places but the series has peaked.

How does Larry do it? 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

How does Larry David do it? This is the sixth season of the increasingly remarkable Curb Your Enthusiasm. One would think that by this time, the series would start to show wear and tear, but it doesn't. Larry manages to make it even better this time around.

The first addition here is a family that loses their house in a hurricane, and on the prodding (or nagging) of Cheryl, the Davids adopt the family. It's a black family called the Blacks, which Larry has a lot of fun poking at. At first, the addition seems a bit contrived, but by the season's end, they are fully integrated into the series and fit in perfectly. The shows are as hilarious as anything Larry's done, with special kudos going to The Ida Funkhouser Roadside Memorial (where Larry steals flowers from his friend's mother's memorial), The Therapists (with a wonderful comic turn by Steve Coogan), The N Word (where Jeff Garlin accidentally gets his head shaved because of Larry, and Garlin actually got his head shaven for the show and sports a crewcut for the rest of the series), and the anonymous donor, where Larry gets in Ted Danson's face about being "anonymous". It's also funny to see Larry use the Blacks' bathroom with their "real" toilet paper, as opposed to the scarring, environmentally friendly one. Larry divorced his wife, Laurie, and he complained in an interview how she was pyscho about her environmentalism, and she forced him to use said toilet paper. Larry's rear end is now much more pleasant, as he has divorced Laurie and enjoys the benefits of singledom and soft toilet paper.

Many of the usual suspects appear here, and new ones do too (the above Black family, Michael McKean, Steve Coogan, Tia Carrere). It all seems to work so well for Larry. Brilliant stuff.

Editorial Review:

Deep inside, you know you're him. Curb Your Enthusiasm - it's the HBO hit comedy series starring Larry David as...Larry David! Each half-hour episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm features verité-style footage of David (playing himself) at home, at work and around town, as he gets into predicaments with fictional and real-life personalities.

Each season is better than the one before 4 out of 5 stars.

Season 4 starts off with a couple of exciting episodes, and with the cast change and addition of Amanda Tapping (Sam) it gives the series a fresh start. Lots of adventure in this series.

Best Season of Atlantis yet! 5 out of 5 stars.

Season 4 was an incredible season for storyline. The opening episodes set the tone for the whole season. The first half of Season 4 offer some of the best done episodes of either Stargate series and the mid-season 3 part episode is incredible. The return of a beloved friend with a very emotional scene expands Michael's storyline dramatically. The finale is very unique to any season of Stargate. Well done on all fronts!

Stargate = win 5 out of 5 stars.

I'm a huge fan of Stargate SG-1. When I heard of SG Atlantis, I was a bit skeptical, but over the seasons this show has become one of my favorites. Season 4 is just as good as the rest. Definitely a must buy for any Stargate fan.

Stargate Atlantis Season 4 Great SEASON 5 out of 5 stars.

WOW!! What a Great Season Stargate Atlantis brought us this past year. Amanda Tapping leading the way on Atlantis with Col. Sheppard (Joe Flanigan), with Rodney(David Hewlett), Rachel Luttrell & Jason Momoa. This was an action packed season and season 5 will bring us with a lot more action. Now if only the producer's and writer's only keep Stargate Atlantis going for all us fans. Keep an eye out for Stargate Universe next summer 2009 and any movies for the future. Let's keep Atlantis alive with SG-1.

Out and running! 5 out of 5 stars.

Escaping Fox River was just the beginning. Michael Scofield, Lincoln Burrows and the rest are out and on the run. Season 2 is more nail-biting, non-stop action and introduces Michael's smartest and most dangereous nemises yet - agent Alex Mahone (William Fitchner). A couple of good making-of extras, but would have like to see more actor commentaries.

Battlestar Galactica season 3 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Battlestar Galactica - Season Three Season three starts on New Caprica with bonus web episodes, Resistance, to whet the appetite for the first full ep of season three. All in all this pack is full of extras, more than you find on any other TV shows DVD pack. It's a full season pass, both with the actors and producers but the rest of the Galactica team, who make this one of the best shows in television history, and I aint just talking sci-fi here. The high points as always is Olmos, Sackoffe and McDonnell, who are always on their game, and of course my faves Grace Park and Tahmoh Penikett, have to admit they throw a couple of my faves actors out the air lock no more Jammer,Dominic Zamprogna. The low point is Jamie (I am a trained actor) Bamber whose stories as well as acting detract from another wise perfect season and cast. The third season the producers Eick and Moore give us an almost uncompromised television drama experience, that treats the viewer like they have a brain other than pandering to the expected happy endings and clean finishes they challenge the viewer (case in point the final five or four, this discovery is like the end of the miniseries when Boomer was revelled as a cylon...season three give you that same felling NOOOOOOOOOOO!). So season three is, Other than the miscast Apollo, still shines as Tv's Finest

Editorial Review:

The adventure of one of television's finest dramas continues with the complete third season of the Peabody Award-winning Battlestar Galactica. The Colonies' survivors have found their hopes of eluding their Cylon pursuers dashed by an invasion and occupation of their new home. As the fate of all human life hangs in the balance, friends become enemies, enemies become unexpected allies, and decisions are made that will haunt some people for the rest of their lives. Relive all 20 episodes of the season that challenges everything you thought you knew about the Battlestar Galactica universe. Presented in Dolby 5.1 surround sound, the 6-disc set features over 15 hours of extensive special features, including the DVD exclusive version of the episode "Unfinished Business" containing 25 additional minutes of never-before-seen footage. You won't want to miss a minute of the series considered "one of the best dramas on TV" (Time Magazine).

Family Towers! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

My husband and I both love British humor. This was my husband pick for us. At first, it really irritated ME. When I was watching, I was telling "that is enough!!!!!!". Thanks to my husband, I kept watching, after a while I found myself enjoying as much as my husband did. :). By the way, Fawlty Towers is the name of the little typical small hotel in England. The owners, husband and wife, are trying to do their best for their clients :))

The Funniest Show Ever 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Fawlty Towers is simply he best comedy ever written. I bought this collection for a friend in the Hotel/Resturant business, who never did see this show. I highly recommend for anyone, but it is a must see if you are in the Hotel/Resturant business.

A great ensamble show 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This review is prompted by a recent two-star review complaining that Fawlty Towers is "simply" a farce, is not thought-provoking, and is merely a solo vehicle for John Cleese as opposed to, per that reviewer, Monty Python movies.

To each his own, I guess.

This is far from a solo Cleese show. Each of the regulars is a unique, fully realized character. It is the interplay between these characters (with each other and with Cleese) that makes the show. Compare it to some other comedy shows that have a "star" comedian as a lead. For example, Mork and Mindy. That is an example of a "solo" effort and is quite the opposite of Fawlty Towers. You don't see any of the characters in FT standing around laughing at some Cleese antic and looking like they forgot their lines or missed their cue. In FT all the actors stay in character and are generally essential to the scene they are in.

It is agreed that this is not the place if you are looking for something "genuinely thought-provoking" (as that other reviewer wished for). But then again, neither are any of the Monty Python movies (despite that other reviewer's belief). So yes, FT is a farce, but farce is an honorable art form. Just ask William Shakespeare and Geoffrey Chaucer, for starters.

Fawlty Towers is one of the funniest, most tightly-scripted shows ever on TV. Some of the episodes are right up there with _The Comedy of Errors_ and _The Miller's Tale_. And I think the target audience for all of these was about the same.

Editorial Review:

Inspired by a hotel John Cleese once stayed in when he was filming "Monty Python." This complete set of Fawlty Towers episodes includes special new commentary by John Cleese. Please see individual volumes for episode descriptions.

NCIS Season 5--Beneath The Surface... 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

There has been a pattern in the writing of NCIS that has always been fascinating. Ever since "Bete Noire" in Season 1, this series has always used it's season finale to essentially set up the next season's finale. "Bete Noire" introduced Ari Haswari. In the finale to Season 1, Jethro Gibbs shot Ari to cover Haswari's double agent status--though Gibbs would have preferred to kill Ari. Because Ari wasn't killed at the end of Season 1, he was able to murder Kate Todd at the end of Season 2. Because Ari shot Kate at the end of Season 2--and more importantly, WHY he chose to murder her--we were able to get the backstory of Gibbs revealed, the tragedy surrounding his first wife and daughter, which culminated with Jethro leaving the MTAC at the end of Season 3. Because of Gibbs' "retirement", NCIS Director Jenny Shepard was able to initiate her off-the-books operation against Rene Benoit, using Tony DiNozzo to romance La Grenouille's daughter Jeanne.
So as we get into Season 5, we have the culmination of Shepard's attempt to avenge her father's death by killing Benoit, though she crosses both the CIA and the FBI in the attempt. "Bury Your Dead"--especially its final scene--sets the tone for the season. Though the show has its usual action, interplay between its characters, and bawdiness that has made the show such a wonderful view, there also seems a certain weight to the season. The regular viewer knows the story with The Frog isn't over, moreover there has to be a deeper reason why Shepard seemed willing to pursue Benoit without government sanction. It is the playing out of this season that, again while the season has its usual fun, seems to give the season a somewhat sad tone.
Still, the performances are at their usual high standards. Mark Harmon's Gibbs is his usual self, though we are once again shown more of Jethro's past and his genuine heart. While Michael Weatherly's Tony DiNozzo is his usual obnoxious self, the aftermath of the La Grenouille affair leaves our boy shaken, both because of his feelings for Jeanne and being used by Shepard. Tony's conscience comes in the form of Ziva David; who, while enjoying her usual verbal sparring with DiNozzo, also makes Tony own up to his feelings about what happened and what it may have done to Jeanne. Cote De Pablo's Ziva, with her hair straightened and deemphasizing her widow's peak, becomes a more Americanized woman (and the shots of Cote bending over ain't too bad, either). We didn't have an episode that featured Sean Murray's Tim McGee a season after The Probie's year with his nom de plume (Thom E. Gemcity), but Pauley Perrette's wonderful Abby Sciutto gets her usual fun, especially in "Dog Tags". David McCallum's Ducky Mallard is most representative of the tone of the season, because he becomes privy to the secret that Jenny hides through the season.
This leads to Lauren Holly, and the end of the Jenny Shepard storyline. Shepard seems calmer this season, especially after the disappearance of The Frog (Even propositioning Gibbs in "Lost And Found"), but we figure something had to have been motivating Jenny attempting something that would compromise the agency. That something plays out through the season, and is revealed in "Judgement Day", the two-part season finale, which of course sets the table for Season 6.
The high points of this season are "Ex-File", in which a part of Jethro's past becomes a part of an investigation (Plus, we get a visit from Susana Thompson's Hollis Mann--this episode is capped by a wonderfully sad sequence at the end), "Internal Affairs" (The body of La Grenouille resurfaces, and we meet Rocky Carroll's Leon Vance--Carroll draws greatly from Daniel Benzali's character in "The Agency" from earlier this decade), "About Face" (Where Brian Dietzen's Jimmy Palmer is featured, and reveals a slight obsession with footwear), "Judgement Day" (Which brings Gibbs and Shepard's long-ago Paris operation--the one where they also became lovers--to a full circle, as well as Jethro coming to a sad conclusion about the murder of The Frog), and the simply magnificent "Requiem", in which Gibbs, while aiding the now-grown best friend of his late daughter, is finally able to put to rest the loss of Shannon and Kelly.
Performances of note are Joe Spano--we don't see as much of Tobias Fornell as we usually do during a season. Susana Thompson, whose character retired from the Army when she realized Jethro hadn't recovered from losing his wife and daughter (Why do I suspect that Holly will appear again--in Hawaii, living on the grounds of a novelist, and driving a Ferrari?). Susan Kelichi Watson's Nikki Jardine, the NCIS Intelligence Analyst who happens to be a germophobe (Leading to many moments where the team exploits Jardine's phobia for their humor), and Muse Watson returning as Mike Franks in the season finale, with his usual cowboy demeanor. But Cameron Goodman's performance in "Requiem"--as Maddie Tyler, Kelly Gibbs' best friend as a child--gives the episode the impetus that sets Jethro toward finally making his peace with losing Shannon and Kelly.
NCIS has always been a fun show, with an ability to wrench at the heart in unexpected moments. This is a season that has an underlying tone of sadness and impending tragedy, and it gives the season some unusual depth.

Go Team Venture!! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Absolutely LOVE this cartoon. Besides Project Runway (yeah, I know, but everyone has to have a vice) this is the only show I actually watch regularly. And even thought I see every episode on TV (usually multiple times) it's one of those DVDs, like one of my favorite movies, that I have around for that rainy day when nothing else will fill the spot. I absolutely love this cartoon!!

Editorial Review:

Once a child prodigy, Dr. Venture now fails as both a scientist and father. Luckily, his twins, Hank and Dean are too stupid to care. And they've got their vicious, macho bodyguard, Brock, looking out for them. Together they'll get in all sorts of situations involving wild alligators, street ruffians, and booby traps. Brock really likes the booby traps.

Awesome and Beautiful 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I first saw Blue Planet on the Discovery channel... years ago and I absolutely fell in love with it. It is one of the most beautifully filmed documentaries and I think only Planet Earth (ironically) surpasses it in that beauty. I have also always loved David Attenborough, who has a way of really bringing the majesty of whatever you are watching into your home. This series is educational and beautiful to the point of tears. This is a must for any DVD library and I would highly recommend Planet Earth as well.

Beautiful but preachy 2 out of 5 stars.
4 of 19 people found this review helpful.

The potential of this beautifully filmed show is seriously tarnished by the preachy 'humans suck' message. I get enough of this in my daily life. I'd rather not have it fed to me in every single movie, TV show, etc... that I watch. I watch these things to get away from reality for a few minutes...

Blue Planet..Awesome and uplifting 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I hesitated for a long time before making this purchase...now I know I should have bought this instead of something else. I can ignore the 'facts' about the age of the corals etc...this documentary is truly inspiring, uplifting and eye-opening. Sea creatures I never thought possible, amusing mating styles, and much more...and the narrator is excellent. Relaxing end of day edutainment for me...I'll be watching these over and over again. Thanks BBC.

Pretty Lame 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A read a review that called Get Smart "Staggeringly Bad". Now, although I won't go that far, it was pretty bad, and not very funny at all. I watched it thinking that I might enjoy it if i tried to seperate it from the TV series, but it was still bad. The movie gave only passing reference to the players and comic genius of the original series. It seemed as though they were just trying to get those catch phrases and support characters out of the way so they could continue with whatever it was they were trying to do here.
I would suggest browsing around Amazon and buying the original series on DVD if you want some real humor. The original series is even relevant today with its use of humor. That's the true sign of real comedy.

Well Made...But Couldn't Make Up Its Mind 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Steve Carrell was an excellent choice to play Maxwell Smart, the production is first rate, and the rest of the cast is very good...but I kept wanting more spoof and less spying. There were too many moments when the story played its intrigue story straight at the expense of the comedy (that and Mike Meyers' limited sex and fart jokes killed the Austin Powers films).

Still, some good moments, every well made (it looks good enough to actually be a glossy spy film!), I just wish it had more humor in it. Either way, it's entertaining.
