Editorial Review:

ABC News investigates the lavish lifestyle of the Saudi royal family and talks to those who say the Saudi princes at play in the Riviera, St. Tropez, Cannes, and Monte Carlo are making a mockery of their faith and have enraged critics who seek to overthrow the kingdom's rulers. ABC also reports on the alleged involvement of some Saudi princes in cocaine smuggling, prostitution rings and suspected efforts to fund terrorists. In the program, ABC News interviews Prince Al Walid Bin Talal and investigated prostitution charges against Prince Abdel Azziz bin Fhad and drug smuggling charges against Prince Nayef bin Fawwaz al Shaalan.

BUYER BEWARE 3 out of 5 stars.

This is not the documentary that aired on PBS but rather interviews with the directors and the citizens of Jasper that took place in conjuction with the original airing of the program on PBS. It is an excellent companion piece to the documentary but is not the actual documentary itself so considered yourself warned.

Editorial Review:

One morning in 1998, America awoke to the story of a staggering hate crime. A man beaten and chained to the back of a pickup truck, dragged three miles until his body was torn to pieces...simply because he was black. The world press came and went, often stereotyping Jasper, Texas as a small town full of redneck haters. Two filmmakers, who had known each other since childhood, wanted to take a closer look. One filmmaker was white, one black. They had talked with each other for years about their belief that the races have trouble talking to one another, and they had an idea. Whitney Dow would film the whites of Jasper. Marco Williams would film the blacks.

A brief, full interview - total running time shorter than stated 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I got what I expected, which was the full interview as broadcast. However, beware that these segments only run about 10 minutes or so; you won't be getting an extended program exclusively on the topic named.

Not a complaint, only an observation.

Not John 1 out of 5 stars.

This was definely not what I was expecting. That is the reason why I sent it back. Not worth the money!!!!

Editorial Review:

John Edwards makes big bucks claiming he "talks to the dead" on his syndicated TV show. His audiences are often convinced he's speaking to someone's dead relative or close friend. Edward says it's not his job to be right all the time; his job is to be a medium and to pass on the information. ABC News assembled a group for Edwards and he did make some connections for them, but he had a lot more misses. In addition, Michael Shermer, founder of the Skeptics Society, was invited to comment on Edward's "cold reading."

Editorial Review:

What is life really like for today's teenagers? More specifically, what are they saying - and doing - about their sex lives? In collaboration with Seventeen Magazine, ABC News holds a sleepover in which 14 girls from around the country volunteer to spend a night together talking about intimate details of their lives - including their first sexual experiences. The open conversation among the young strangers reveals just how harsh and fast the world of teen sex is today. Next ABC News examines the phenomenon of MySpace.com, and how kids chatting to strangers on the Internet can have serious consequences. The site is one of the hottest online sites where kids go to hang out these days. People make their own web page with the goal of connecting to others with similar interests. My Space can be a wholesome place to share pictures and stories, but is it also one-stop shopping for sex and drugs? Lastly, a story of how a first love turns into psychotic love -- when a boyfriend goes over the edge. ABC News looks at how relationships among teens can become as life-threatening as any adult abusive relationship. Meet a young woman who was stabbed in the back with an eight-inch knife by a young man who couldn't bear the fact that she was breaking up with him. But she lives to tell the tale, and wants to warn others that young love isn't always as innocent as it seems.

Get ready for high fives or personal protest. 5 out of 5 stars.

John Stossel should be called the "Dragnet" of journalism, his no nonsense and "just the facts m'am" approach to things makes this dvd worth watching. As you watch this video there will be times you will be tempted to start talking to yourself with comments like "I knew that!", "after all the arguments mom was wrong!", "how can that be, I got cold and then got the flu!". This video will show you statistics and eyewitnesses to explain the everyday myths, lies and straight talk that is part of our daily life.

Critics may try to dispute the facts and Stossel's sources. This video is a good source to students to understand critical thinking. I highly recommend this video for teachers and parents. Very educational and MAKES you do some THINKING about comments and ideas others want you to believe is true.

Stossel did an ABC special years ago called Junk Science, too bad I don't see that dvd available. That video shows you how science can be manipulated to convince people they are right.

Editorial Review:

In part 1, John Stossel takes a look at several popular beliefs: Getting cold will give you a cold; money can buy happiness; chemicals are killing us; we're drowning in garbage. None of it is true. For example, scientists say that people get sick in winter, not because they're cold, but because they spend more time indoors spreading viruses back and forth. Research shows that more money makes people significantly happier only if their family income is below $30,000; after $50,000 money makes no difference. These and more myths are answered when John Stossel puts conventional wisdom to the test in "Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidity." In part 2, John Stossel takes a look at several popular beliefs: Is it true that strange things happen when the moon is full? Are SUVs safer to drive than cars? Should you avoid swimming after eating? John Stossel puts conventional wisdom to the test in "Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidity." Correspondent: John Stossel

In the Heart of Darkness: The Curse of Wealth (part 5)

A question of Identity 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Not at all what I expected. I am a teacher in Miami Dade Public Schools and I used this as a teaching instrument to my high school students. This video did not peak their interest, but it did lead them to question the terms of race, culture, and it's larger sociological constructs. Others wanted to do a DNA test and learn who they are. A nice follow-up and discussion piece would be Alex Haley's "Roots".

Editorial Review:

How do you define race? Is it the color of your skin, the type of hair, or the way you live your life? Is your race defined by society or by scientists or by how you see yourself? ABC News follows one man's experience grappling with the fundamental question of identity. Wayne Nelson is a man who has lived the black experience and has written about the black experience. He has raised his son and daughter to be proud of their black heritage, a heritage he has been proud of himself. So he was intrigued after a seeing a story about a company that offered Ancestry by DNA, a test to find out just how much of him was African. The results were not what he expected at all and it made him readdress the age old question: "Who am I?" The question of race in America is the one that still defines us in a way that no other question does. Correspondent: Jim Wooten

Editorial Review:

The peace of an ordinary Wednesday morning was suddenly shattered by a massive explosion that destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah federal building, which had a childcare center on the second floor. It took most of the day to fully assess the damage. The final death toll was 168 with more than 500 injured. The fact that this day, April 19, 1995, was exactly two years after the tragedy at the Branch Davidian compound in Waco Texas, was apparent almost immediately, and many speculated that the two attacks were related. Although later reports shifted the focus to other possibilities, investigators quickly traced the explosion to a rented truck, and the truck to a suspect named Timothy McVeigh. McVeigh was ultimately tried, convicted...and then executed by lethal injection.

Interesting. 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This DVD is forty five minutes of the breaking news, a Nightline story, and an interview from Good Morning America the day of and the morning after the Columbine Shootings. While it is interesting to see the "classic" newscast, there is little information in the DVD to correct the initial mistakes in the reporting. Therefore, other than providing the blurbs of the newscasts, which are mostly inaccurate as far as what happened, the only thing you are really provided with is the first emotional blow of the shootings. I found it to be good, but I was frustrated that they never took the time to correct the story to the most simple measure, nor do they even take the time to list those who were killed. However they do take the time to talk about the shooters, and talk some about criminal profiling and that was a good way to close.

Solid Overview 3 out of 5 stars.

This is a solid overview chronicling the events during the Columbine shootings. I bought it to do a project at school with and it will give a good understanding of when things occurred. There could have been more done involving the kids who were victims and the shooters as well, but overall it is a good video.

Editorial Review:

Rape is common in the United States. But while there is no doubt that the woman is the rapist's first victim, she is not the only victim. Her man--a husband, a boyfriend, is often a victim too. There is guilt, a need to lash out, frustration at not being able to make everything right again. ABC News looks at couples trying to survive, trying to find what psychologists call a 'new normal.' The old normal, the life before the rape, is gone. The new normal will include the scars of the assault, it will include the fear and the distrust, the revulsion, the anger. But life can't be just those things, for that would be no life at all.
