Roberta 4 out of 5 stars.

My son has mental illness and the National Alliance of Mental Illness
recommended this 16 minute segment from a 20/20 television show as a good way to try and understand how the mind of a mentally ill person perceives things.
A group of scientists at Yale University developed a visual reality device that one puts on their head to see and hear as if you have schizophrenia. It is an intense video showing a very extreme case of delusional processing. There are schizophrenic persons explaining their form of this illness.
This CD is informative and worth viewing. It, in itself, is not enough of an education if one is seeking answers about this terrible disease. It does, however, add a greater clarity to what it does to a person.

Editorial Review:

It's all in their minds: visions, voices, taunting, never ending, driving them crazy or worse. It's hard to imagine, but now, an amazing device lets you feel their pain. The technology lets you go inside the mind of a schizophrenic. See what they see. Hear what they hear. Using the technique of virtual reality, Janssen Pharmaceuticals has developed a device to stimulate the visual and auditory hallucinations of a schizophrenic patient. Dr. Timothy Johnson explores the world of people struggling with the voices within. This "20/20" show contains the following additional stories: Victim's Comp Windsheilds

Excellent show about OCD 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great segment of a show about OCD. It is current and provides a good idea of how people with this disorder and those who care about them are affected by OCD.

Editorial Review:

Whenever Lois Pile hits the road, she also thinks she's hitting people on the road. She truly believes this. Lois is constantly looking around, checking the mirrors, anticipating a catastrophe that never happens. Lois' real problem is not her driving. Instead, Lois suffers from an illness, a form of obsessive compulsive disorder 'harming obsession,' and in her case, Lois is afraid she's going to run someone over. ABC News speaks to several OCD sufferers who have a chemical imbalance that manifests in intrusive thought patterns.

I use the movie in my classroom of 10th graders and we do a major writing project after we watch it. THis edition shows the real teacher and the real kids when they were doing the action and it even inspires my kids more. Great information too.

The private worlds of autism 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Primetime's documentary of 3 boys with aspergers syndrom is a great overview of the struggles both the persons with aspergers and their families deal with on a daily basis. Each boy has an obsession with something: one with trains, one with washers and dryers, and one with game shows. If only others could understand the importance of these things, too!
The show realistically portrays how the boys and their parents have had to adjust to the challenges that come with aspergers, particularly the difficulties in social situations, and what they are doing to ensure that they do not lose touch with the real world. This video increases anyone's understanding of the world of aspergers.
Thank you for this!

Editorial Review:

ABC News reports on Aspergers Syndrome, a debilitating, life-long, neurological disorder with similarities to autism. Children with Aspergers have intense obsessions, great difficulty carrying on normal conversations or feeling emotions. Their obsession is a symptom of the unique disorder. They're highly intelligent but their brains are wired differently. They can't read faces if someone's sad or angry, so that leaves them alone, isolated. ABC News spends time with kids struggling to understand the language of life.

ABC News correspondent Bob Brown profiles the remarkable Bill Porter of Portland, Oregon. Born with cerebral palsy, Porter nonetheless became a door-to-door salesman in Portland, struggling up to 10 miles a day on foot while selling household products for the Watkins Company. Friendly and persistent, in time Porter became the top grossing Watkins salesman in the United States. His story was told in the 2002 TNT cable movie Door To Door, with actor William H. Macy as Porter and Kyra Sedgwick as Porter's friend and assistant, Shelly Brady.

Editorial Review:

It was a day that no one who lived through it will ever forget. A young and vibrant president shot dead on the streets of a major American city --- the fourth presidential assassination in the country's history. The assassination of President John F. Kennedy was also the first time that U.S. television networks went to 24-hour coverage of a news story. ABC News takes you back to November 22, 1963. Many televisions on the east coast were tuned in to "Father Knows Best" when the first special news bulletin broke in with a report that the President had been shot. Watch as the information that is familiar to us now was reported for the first time - the first eyewitness reports and the first time we learn the shots were fired from the Texas School Book Depository. You also see police display the rifle Lee Harvey Oswald used and the first interview with Abraham Zapruder, the bystander who shot the now famous video of the motorcade and assassination, but whose significance was not fully appreciated at the time.

Get ready for high fives or personal protest. 5 out of 5 stars.

John Stossel should be called the "Dragnet" of journalism, his no nonsense and "just the facts m'am" approach to things makes this dvd worth watching. As you watch this video there will be times you will be tempted to start talking to yourself with comments like "I knew that!", "after all the arguments mom was wrong!", "how can that be, I got cold and then got the flu!". This video will show you statistics and eyewitnesses to explain the everyday myths, lies and straight talk that is part of our daily life.

Critics may try to dispute the facts and Stossel's sources. This video is a good source to students to understand critical thinking. I highly recommend this video for teachers and parents. Very educational and MAKES you do some THINKING about comments and ideas others want you to believe is true.

Stossel did an ABC special years ago called Junk Science, too bad I don't see that dvd available. That video shows you how science can be manipulated to convince people they are right.

Editorial Review:

In part 1, John Stossel takes a look at several popular beliefs: Getting cold will give you a cold; money can buy happiness; chemicals are killing us; we're drowning in garbage. None of it is true. For example, scientists say that people get sick in winter, not because they're cold, but because they spend more time indoors spreading viruses back and forth. Research shows that more money makes people significantly happier only if their family income is below $30,000; after $50,000 money makes no difference. These and more myths are answered when John Stossel puts conventional wisdom to the test in "Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidity." In part 2, John Stossel takes a look at several popular beliefs: Is it true that strange things happen when the moon is full? Are SUVs safer to drive than cars? Should you avoid swimming after eating? John Stossel puts conventional wisdom to the test in "Myths, Lies and Downright Stupidity." Correspondent: John Stossel

A Complete Waste of Time 1 out of 5 stars.

If you want to see Matthew Shepard's murderers make things up as they go along to a completely shameless Elizabeth Vargas, then watch this episode of 20/20. If, on the other hand, you have a brain and don't appreciate the drudging up of an awful crime for ratings--with no really new information--then ignore this tripe.

Love Matthew,Hate The Show! 5 out of 5 stars.

Okay I Didnt See The Show But The Only Reason Is Cause Judy Matthews Mother Had Said AFTER She Saw The Show They Took All The Things She HAd Said Out Of Conteches So It Looked Like She Had Been Agreeing With Everything The Interviewer And Aaron & Russell Were Saying WHICH WAS NOT TRUE!!!

Editorial Review:

In 2004, Matthew Shepard's killing changed the dialogue on gay life. His murder has been widely described as a hate crime, and gay activists cite it when demanding hate crime legislation. Shepard, a gay college student was severely beaten and tied to a fence by two men on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. Shepard died a few days later. He became a symbol for the gay community when the murder was deemed as an anti-gay hate crime. But was the murder of Matthew Shepard a "gay bashing," or were there other factors in play that night? Exclusive prison interviews with convicted killers Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson on the events leading up to that fateful night.
