Editorial Review:

Combining uncompromising historical accuracy with compelling mysteries, this acclaimed PBS series continues with three feature-length episodes. Michael Kitchen (Out of Africa) stars as DCS Christopher Foyle, investigating wartime crimes in an English coastal town. With the end of World War II slowly but inevitably approaching, Foyle and his fellow citizens learn the price of victory and face a peace that will transform their lives in unexpected ways.

Also starring Anthony Howell and Honeysuckle Weeks, and featuring Nicholas Day, Malcolm Sinclair, Nicholas Woodeson, Duncan Bell, Julian Ovenden, Mark Bazeley, Julian Wadham, and Phyllida Law.

THE MYSTERIES:

  • PLAN OF ATTACK—With the Hastings police force suffering attrition and low morale, Foyle comes out of retirement to probe the mysterious death of a cartographer from the Air Ministry office.
  • BROKEN SOULS—The murder of an ambitious young doctor at the local psychiatric clinic produces no shortage of suspects among the staff and patients, many of whom still experience the war’s horrors.
  • ALL CLEAR—With final victory expected any day, Hastings looks ahead to a radically different post-war life. But the end comes too soon for two men—one a murder victim, the other an apparent suicide.

DVD SEPCIAL FEATURES INCLUDE making-of documentary, cast member reflections, notes on a real-life Foyle, and cast filmographies.

Love this series and how well done it is. My high school kids really learn about that period during the war and what daily life was like. Good morals and that is getting harder to find in shows these days. Well done

Excellent 5 out of 5 stars.

I agree with the other reviewers, this is a must see.
I just want to add 2 comments to already has been written
Michael Kitchen is outstanding in the series House of Cards trilogy volume 2.
In regard to Set 1 only ,I do not understand the excitement about Honeysuckle Weeks [Sam]. I have not seen the other volumes but in set one, I find her adequete but not outstanding.

One of my most favorite series 5 out of 5 stars.

I watched every episode of Foyle's War when it was on PBS' Mystery series. The episodes are extremely well-written, and the acting is excellent. Michael Kitchen, the series' eponymous character, has a taut, low-key style. Yet, he exerts himself as a forceful lead actor. Foyle is a chief inspector of a relatively small, but strategically important, English sea coast town during WWII. So, there's murder and wartime intrigue in each Foyle's War episode. I bought the 1st season as a Christmas present present for my brother. He saw but one episode and loved it.

A Visually Beautiful, Clever, Well-Acted, and Faithful Adaptation 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS is an impressive movie. Well-acted, beautifully shot and lit, and with a sharp tongued script and stunning sets, it is a masterpiece, much like the genius book by Agatha Christie is considered today.

The story follows detective Hercule Poirot (a heavily accented Albert Finney) as he has to solve the murder of Mr. Ratchett (Richard Widmark) on the infamous Orient Express. Among the suspects are: loquacious Mrs. Hubbard (Lauren Bacall), Bible-toting Swede Greta Ohlsson (Ingrid Bergman), Colonel Arbuthnot (Sean Connery), his lover Miss Debenham (Vanessa Redgrave), and conductor Pierre Michel (Jean-Pierre Michel). Along for the ride are a Dr. Constantine and Poirot's old friend Bianchi (Marin Balsam). Each of the 12 passengers has secrets and lies, but the big question is: whodunit?

The best thing about the film is the look. The train itself is created wonderfully and realistically, and the sets of the cars are simply gorgeous. And if this film didn't win an Oscar for cinematography, it very well should have. This film is shot in, back then, an unconventional manner including now common swing-shots, rotating cameras, and several flashback scenes that look unique every time, due to different lighting and angles. The lighting, likewise, is inspired, and while I don't usually pay attention to things like that when I see a move, this time I couldn't help but noticing. In addition, the score by Richard Rodney Bennett is lush and memorable.

The actors do a great job. Finney can be hard to understand, but Lauren Bacall is my favorite as the chatter-mouthed, annoying American Hubbard. Ingrid Bergman won an Oscar for her role, and though she is good, she obviously didn't deserve it, as she's only in 2 or 3 scenes and is hardly Oscar-worthy in them. I also enjoyed Redgrave as Debenham, Cassel as the French conductor, and Widmark in his brief role as the murdered Mr. Ratchett who is, like all else, more than he seems.

The movie is great. It could have benefitted from a faster pace, but that's about all I have against it. It's memorable and intriguing even today, more than 30 years after it was made.

A whole bunch of fun. A Miss Marple with lots of fight in her, who loves a little beer. You can't beat Margaret Rutherford as a feisty Miss Marple who will try anything to solve a mystery.

Delightful Rutherford! 5 out of 5 stars.

These are my favorite Miss Marple films even though Margaret Rutherford's character is nothing like the "real" Miss Marple. Three of the films are loosely based on Agatha Christie novels, however.

Margaret Rutherford is delightful. She is the reason I enjoy this series so much. My friends and I rented these films in the 1970s - before VCRs. I later recorded the movies from TV. This summer I was happy to find the DVDs for a very reasonable price on Amazon - only $27.49 at the time with free shipping.

The satirical cover illustrations alone are worth the price!

This has to be one of my favorite movies of all times. My brother and I were youngsters and luckily we were allowed to stay up late when the movie came on. We were mezmerized throughout. The ending blew us away, and we've talked about it for years. They just don't make movies like that anymore. I recommend it whole-heartedly!!!!

Tyrone Power, Marlene Dietrich and Charles Laughton star in this brilliantly made courtroom drama (The Film Daily) that left audiences reeling from its surprise twists and shocking climax. Directed by Billy Wilder, scripted by Wilder and Harry Kurnitz and based on Agatha Christie's hit London play, this splendid, six-time Oscar-nominated* classic crackles with emotional electricity (The New York Times) and continues to keep movie lovers riveted until the final, mesmerizing frame. When a wealthy widow is found murdered, her married suitor, Leonard Vole (Power), is accused of the crime. Vole's only hope for acquittal is the testimony of his wife (Dietrich) but his airtightalibi shatters when she reveals some shocking secrets of her own! *1957: Best Picture, Actor (Laughton), Supporting Actress (Elsa Lanchester), Director, Sound, Film Editing

THE HOLLOW: A weekend retreat where all the guests appear to despise one another finds Poirot hard at work doing what he does best.
FIVE LITTLE PIGS: Poirot agrees to help a young woman prove her mother's innocence, 14 years after being sent to the gallows.

AFTER THE FUNERAL: Following the murder of a wealthy patriarch, Poirot is called upon to begin an investigation. The case takes a wild twist however, when his prime suspect turns up dead.
CARDS ON THE TABLE: When a woman is found dead at a card game, four investigators--including Poirot himself set out to discover which guest is the killer.

History meets mystery in this award-winning PBS series, with four all-new feature-length episodes set at the height of World War II. Michael Kitchen (Out of Africa) returns as the laconic Christopher Foyle, detective chief superintendent in the English town of Hastings. War has torn the social fabric of this once-quiet coastal community, and Foyle’s investigations explore the violence and opportunism that the conflict has fostered on the home front.

Also starring Anthony Howell and Honeysuckle Weeks, and featuring Kenneth Colley, Dermot Crowley, Liz Fraser, Philip Jackson, Michael Jayston, Corey Johnson, Jonah Lotan, and Roy Marsden.

    THE MYSTERIES:

  • INVASION—As the first American GIs arrive to build an airbase near Hastings, the murder of a barmaid further strains already-tense relations between the locals and the Yanks.
  • BAD BLOOD—A top-secret experiment in biological warfare goes horribly wrong, complicating a murder investigation and threatening the life of Foyle’s faithful driver, Sam.
  • BLEAK MIDWINTER—The death of a young munitions worker and the murder of Paul Milner’s wife seem linked, and Foyle strives to clear his sergeant from suspicion.
  • CASUALTIES OF WAR—While investigating gambling and sabotage, Foyle takes in his troubled goddaughter and her severely traumatized son, who refuses to speak.

DVD SPECIAL FEATURES INCLUDE making-of documentary, production notes, the historical truth behind each episode, and cast filmographies.
