Scripture As Film 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 1 people found this review helpful.

If you've read Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom, then you know the author's got a way with wrenching your emotions. I've never teared up as much as when I'd read that book; the story of a student and his old teacher who was dying of a horribly debilitating disease. But it also had a fairly high schmaltz factor. THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN also has that sappiness running through it, but with a serious religious bent to boot (not surprising considering the title).

The story is that of Eddie (Jon Voight, National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets) and his life as a repairman at an entertainment park. Many things have happened at this unique place. It's where Eddie's father worked day in and day out all of his life. It's where Eddie fell in love with his future wife Marguerite (Dagmar Dominczyk, 24 TV series). It's the place where Eddie would leave in order to fight and become injured in WW II. And it's where Eddie would eventually die while trying to save the life of a child.

The story takes place immediately after Eddie's death, and we get to see five flashbacks via five people that Eddie thought he never knew. The first is Blue Man (Jeff Daniels, The Lookout) who was a sideshow freak at the carnival. Little did Eddie know he'd touched Blue Man in a very special way, but also may have been partially responsible for his death.

The second is Captain (Michael Imperioli, Shark Tale) who was his commanding officer during WW II. Both having been captured and tortured during the war, they also broke themselves free and torched their prison before departing. It was also during this time that Eddie was wounded in the knee, making him unable to walk normally for the rest of his life. But who shot him? And were there any people in those prison huts they burned down?

The third person is Eddie's own Marguerite. Having not seen his wife since her death many years before, Eddie comes to understand just how much he loved her ...but also how much he'd held back due to his own past during the war.

The fourth is someone he'd never met in life but had worked for during most of his time on Earth, Ruby (Ellen Burstyn, The Fountain), for whom the park was named where Eddie worked. The destruction and rebuilding of Ruby's Pier (the name of the entertainment park) is an analogy for the same thing Eddie must do in order to salvage himself from the destructive behavior toward his abusive father.

The fifth and final person is someone, again, Eddie had never met but who's life he touched in a very significant way. Telling you who and how this happened would be a huge spoiler, so I'll just say that, in true scripture fashion, Eddie is able to "wash away" his sins and become someone worthy of heavenly entry.

The biggest challenge for some viewers will be trying to separate the acting/scenes with the religious themes being rammed down their throats. But if you're able to separate them, you might enjoy it on some levels. Although morally it's a tale of one man's eventual redemption in the afterlife, it also has some pretty good acting and interesting sets for a made-for-TV Hallmark presentation.

A message to those who are "true believers": please try not to thump your bibles too loudly.

Great movie... 5 out of 5 stars.

In a day we some of us take racial equality more for granted, this wonderfully created movie shows how not too long ago, bigotry was quite the norm. Based on a true store of Dr. Blalock's first open heart surgery, this movie will bring appreciation and inspiration to all ages.

Editorial Review:

(Drama) Something the Lord Made tells the emotional true story of two men who defied the rules of their time to launch a medical revolution, set against the backdrop of the Jim Crow south. Working in 1940s Baltimore on an unprecedented technique for performing heart surgery on "blue babies," Dr. Alfred Blalock (Alan Rickman) and lab technician Vivien Thomas (Mos Def) form an impressive team. As Blalock and Thomas invent a new field of medicine, saving thousands of lives in the process, social pressures threaten to undermine their collaboration and tear their friendship apart.

My right to vote - never gave it much thought. I now have a new appreciation for the privilege; and recommend this film to anyone not familiar with this piece of our history. You'll be enlightened.

Iron Jawed Angels 4 out of 5 stars.

Good movie - accurately portrayed - except for one scene that seemed to be added to make this movie a little more risque. Other than that 30 seconds to one minute scene (that seemed a little out of context) this was a great movie.

Educational value 5 out of 5 stars.

Love's Unending Legacy 5 out of 5 stars.

I absolutely love this whole series. Janette Oke is the best. It's been quite a long time since an inspiring series like this has come along. I really like Michael Landon, Jr.'s style. He makes you believe you are back in the time of horse and wagon. I think we need more of this type of movie today. Get back to basics. The story from start to finish keeps you drawn in. You're always wondering what will happen next. I would recommend this movie and the entire series to anyone who likes a good old fashion love story. I will watch it again and again. The charactors fit very well into the story.

A Dark tale Superbly produced 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As a fan of British period films - I expected this Anne Bronte film to be whimsical like many BBC productions - but was pleasantly surprised at the haunting darkness of the story.

The lead female, played by Tara Fitzgerald, is almost repulsive in her abrasive and aloof character at first... but then as you discover her story, you are heartened by her strength and courage.
Rupert Graves is convincingly detestable in his role as the lover, turned abusive and monstrous husband. He plays the role to the tee, and adds (in the disturbing flashback scenes) an almost creepy edge to the film. The fact that these flashbacks involve a child that Fitzgerald is protecting, makes them all the more unnerving.

I found the film to be engrossing - You cringe to watch the deplorable abuses and yet yearn to discover how things happened and where they will end. You view from several vantage points, the misconceptions of relationships - and how differently people define "the benefits of marriage."

Excellently acted, not outdone by scenery and costuming, but wonderfully produced from start to finish. Although definitely a darker film, this is a British period peice worth watching!

Editorial Review:

Rupert Graves, Toby Stephens and Tara Fitzgerald star in this Peabody Award and BAFTA winning BBC Adaptation of the Anne Brontë novel. Powerful, haunting and disturbing, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is as powerful a story as those of Brontë’s more famous sisters. In a remote village on the Yorkshire moors, a beautiful widow and her son move into the near-derelict Wildfell Hall. Befriended by a handsome young farmer, she remains mysteriously silent about her past and why she is afraid – until she becomes the focus of malicious village gossip.

No more soft soap please 2 out of 5 stars.

I will say honestly and up front, I have little love lost for the Church. It has lied, obfuscated and just plain obstructed justice for decades of child abuse, enslavement in the Magdalene Launderies occurring to the late 20th Century. While, including the character portrayed herein, there were many good men/women who helped, it does not cover the stain of the crimes committed by the Church. Also, it doesn't cover the crimes continuing to be committed.
This movie is one of several that have been made showing the good side of the Vatican and its' represetatives. It is based on historical data. But what we must remember and not forget is the other reality of that Era. Instead of actively speaking out against Hitler and his Minions, the Catholic Church chose to be silent. When was being sought for Hitler's final solution, it should have been preemptively given to Allied Intelligence with the seal of the Pope as its' authenticity. None of this occurred. In fact, a great many escapes from the Allies sweep for Nazis involved in the final solution was done with Vatica papers.
Yes, this is a moving story. But let us deal in reality, the Church operated a series of launderies where young womnen worked without hope of leaving in Ireland. Many of them buried in unmarked graves. In Newfoundland, one order of monks ran a child brothel for molestors quaintly called an orphanage. To put icing on the cake, the monks were paid money by the Canadian goverment to do this fine project. The police were caught looking the other way for the need of many for an occasional transgression.
The Church has never openly dealt with any priestly misconduct unless it was finally pulled out of them by lawsuits, press, and in rare casie criminal prosecution. The Church, in fact, have helped several offenders in the US avoid prosecution or make the prosecution deal with them. They helped one offender in Dallas avoid being put in the Jail as all other similar offenders. This man was able to stay on church property before and during the prosecution.

Selleck plays the role of Jesse Stone, a former Los Angeles homicide detective who left California and his ex-wife to become the police chief in a small New England town. Among his many character flaws are his struggles with a drinking problem and lingering feelings for his ex-wife.

Jesse Stone: Night Passage is a prequel to 2005’s Stone Cold. Co-starring Stephanie March (TV’s "Law & Order: SVU") and Stephen Baldwin (The Usual Suspects), the telefilm depicts Jesse Stone’s (Selleck) first days as Paradise, Massachusetts’ Chief of Police. He must immediately find the killer of his predecessor, plus investigate a domestic violence situation involving the city’s resident hothead (Baldwin), whose ties to a local bank manager expose a money-laundering scheme.

I love the cast and each episode is sidesplitting funny. Keeps me coming back for more. Thanks for the selection and prices..........

Editorial Review:

FRASIER - THE COMPLETE FOURTH SEASON is a half-hour comedy series set in Seattle, which chronicles the lives of an eloquently pompous radio show host, Dr. Frasier Crane, (Grammer), his competitive, high-brow brother Niles (Hyde Pierce), their crotchety father Martin (Mahoney) and Martin's semi-psychic, live-in home-care provider, Daphne (Leeves). The show made history by becoming the first series, comedy or drama, to achieve a record five consecutive Emmy wins for Outstanding Comedy Series.

THE REAL MEANING OF THE WORD FRIENDSHIP 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

It is a TV movie from the 70's. The time TV used to produce marvelous films without "state of the art" computerized effects. It tells the simple and marvelous story of a real friendship between two American football players. One helps each other on the most difficult times of their lives. Even if you are young and think the film is old and outdated, give it a try. Real friendship is ageless and a precious thing to be cherished. James Caan and Billy Dee Williams are outstanding in the beginning of their careers.

Classic movie to make you cry your eyes out 5 out of 5 stars.

My dad told me about this movie a year or so ago and mentioned that he hadn't seen it in a long while. I looked in a few stores and couldn't find it anywhere but here. This movie is so touching, I could see tears welling in my father's eyes from the beginning and he is now the sensitive type of man. One of the best t.v. movies of all time, and has a large amount of special features, especially for a movie made before dvd's came around. Overall, great movie, and my dad loved the gift :)
