Solid Police Procedural Series 4 out of 5 stars.

The Streets of San Francisco is part of the legacy of Quinn Martin, who was one of television's alltime most successful producers, responsible for some of television's most popular action/adventure series. Martin was the producer for such popular series as The Untouchables, The FBI, Cannon, and Barnaby Jones.

The Streets of San Francisco followed the pattern of most of Martin's shows. There were divided into three acts and an epilogue, and the guest stars were introduced at the beginning of each episode. The show feature veteran, Oscar-winning actor Karl Malden (who during this time starred in a series of popular commercials for American Express credit cards) and Michael Douglas, son of Hollywood legend Kirk Douglas.

Malden played veteran SF homicide cop Mike Stone, who was newly paired with rookie detective Steven Keller, played by Douglas. Following the Naked City model of police dramas, Stone showed the green Keller the ropes of policing the city while Keller used his criminology decree and understanding of modern technology to balance the equation. Darleen Carr has an occasional role as Stone daughter and Keller's eventual love interest.

This was a solid, enjoyable series and the teaming of Malden and Douglas was an excellent one. This show is one that is still entertaining almost forty years later.

Some things never get old. 5 out of 5 stars.

The Streets of San Francisco is a true walk down memory lane, with none of the boring projector slides and dusty photos in a shoe box. Each episode in this volume is packed with thick plots, great acting, and a bit of humor. The chemistry between Mr.Malden and Mr. Douglas is secret ingredient that really what makes this whole series groove. That and the endless array of guest stars. In what other series could you see Tiny Tim, Tom Bosley, and Patty Duke?

If you are hungry for a good, old cop drama served up with a smear of nostalgia, this will not let you down.

great remastering job 5 out of 5 stars.

Ecellent remastering job on this series! If it wasn't for the classic cars and leisure suits, I would have thought it was shot in 2008!

Love the streets 5 out of 5 stars.

One reviewer stated that if it weren't for the cars and clothes you wouldn't know that this was filmed 35 years ago. How true, For my money this is one of the best series ever filmed. Kudos to Karl Malden one of the greatest actors ever. He totally owns this role and is unshakeable even after taking alot of verbal and physical abuse on the seies. What is interesting is that Maldens character can so easily connect with the city's working class characters. The city is populated with Runyonesque characters and great storylines. I heard that they were making another version of this show. I am not interested in seeing a bunch of rich yuppies and their problems. This show will forever be a classic

great series, but not all of season one! 5 out of 5 stars.

Agreeing with nearly every reviewer here about the quality of the show and the greediness of Paramount to not have the whole first season on these discs for the price you'd normally pay for a complete season, I have to add alittle about the show's appeal to someone who wasn't aloive at the time of its airing. I grew up in the 80s, but the residual culture of the 70s was quite strong in my neighborhood and childhood television experience. Watching this show brings me right back to all that was well with the world of my youth with its fros, leisure suits, big cars, loud colors and cymbol tinking sound tracks when the cops sneek around at night. And i love how you can see the mics under the casts' shirts and the camera in the windows' reflections. Or how the dead can be seen breathing or blinking. So refreshing compared to the over-hyped and over-gross details of death, murder and sex that are soooooo pervasive today. And the camera work is great. No jumping aorund like Law and Order to give you a headache! Oh how I wish the 70s and early 80s were still here. Every age has it's own sense of innocence when thought back upon, and this show captures that for me. Sounds wierd, but maybe you understand too.

The plots of SoSF are pretty good, the pace relaxing and the acting/guest appearances are superb. Buy this set (used?) or get it like I did at the library. Good times indeed! Enjoy!

Just a Terrific TV Police Show! 5 out of 5 stars.

As a City of San Francisco aficionado, I was delighted to see the release of "Streets of San Francisco" and the DVD did not disappoint me.
Karl Malden and Michael Douglas are terrific actors, the guest stars in the episodes are all believable and solid, there are some great visual shots of The City (not as many as in season two), and the writing and plotting are as good (if not better) than any series produced now, about 35 years later.
Fans of the police TV series genre will (and should) snap this up, sit back and enjoy.

Outstanding police procedural drama - great cast and locations 5 out of 5 stars.

Streets of San Francisco was superior to most Quinn Martin detective shows, in part because of the great chemistry between its lead characters but also because a detective and sidekick always works better dramatically: the team of Holmes and Watson always worked better than solo detectives Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple, for example. But far more mysterious than any of the Quinn Martin plot lines is why these outstanding TV shows have taken so long to be released on video. In 1998 a handful of episodes were released only on VHS, even when that format had clearly been displaced by DVD. And presumably the manufacturing cost of DVD is a fraction of VHS duplication, so this further adds to the mystery. Even so, those VHS tapes were a vast improvement over the fuzzy, grainy, cut-for-more-commercial-time versions on TV rerun channels. But this DVD set is better still. The colors are bright and the titles are razor sharp. It probably didn't look this good on first-run network TV. The cover art says "some episodes may be edited from their original network versions," but I can see scenes that have been missing from reruns for many decades. There are no DVD extras but there are English/Spanish Subtitles and a Spanish audio track. With only 4 discs, (on the Volume 1-2 set) and a list price of $80, the collection is grossly overpriced when more contemporary shows cost a half or a third that price, and almost always include some value-added content. But if you're a SSF fan, it may well be worth the premium price.

Editorial Review:

While it never achieved the success of such better-known shows as KOJAK or STARSKY & HUTCH the Quinn Martin-produced THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO remains one of the highlights of the 1970s television crime-drama boom. The action-packed series also made a star of the then up-and-coming actor Michael Douglas who along with Karl Malden anchored the cast as a father-and-son-like duo of crime-fighting San Francisco police detectives 20-year veteran Mike Stone (Malden) and his eager rookie partner Steve Keller (Douglas). Filmed on location in the city by the bay the series distinguished itself with great acting intricate storylines inventive opening credits and an indelible theme song. This collection presents the series' debut season in its entirety.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/SERIES & SEQUELS Rating: NR UPC: 097361310947 Manufacturer No: 131094
