best travel show on tele 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 6 people found this review helpful.

If you do a side by side comparison with some of the other shows on the Travel Channel - say Samantha Brown or any of the cruise ship, theme park, beach vacation drivel - the contrast is startling. Bourdain is not a mainstream personality. He is sarcastic, cynical, brilliantly insightful and (mostly) real. His anti-vegetarian tirades do get old, and sometimes he seems to be pandering a little to every exotic culture he comes in contact with, but in general he is honest and genuine. He lets you see the irritation, fatigue and discomfort that comes with travel, instead of editing those parts out. So entertaining on so many levels. Bourdain is one of the masters of travel television, along with Ian Wright and Michael Palin.

Have 'No Reservations' 4 out of 5 stars.

Collection 2 is an inspiring and informative series of episodes that goes beyond the usual formula "food culture" shows. I think it is genuinely transcendent. Bourdain's personality adds much to this adventure. The series' blending of social and culinary culture with Tony Bourdain's characteristic outlook makes this fantastic entertainment worth purchase.

Bourdain's Asian adventures (India -two great episodes - and Korea) were so good it took me several minutes to come back to reality. These segments stayed with me for days. I craved Indian and Korean food for weeks. They mix culture and food culture into the best shows I've seen yet.

A big surprise was the Northwest segment. I clicked it thinking "The Northwest . . . I should just get this out of the way." I was so impressed that I want to move to Portland! This was such a great treat. The segment on Beirut brought tears to my eyes. This series facilitated the realization that food is so much more than the kitchy shows you watch about which olive oil to use or what the "cuisine" of Tuscany is like. It demonstrates how fundamental food is to our lives, our family, and who we are as a culture.

No Reservations Collection 2 is even better than the first season - which was very good. I recommend it enthusiastically. It makes me hungry for travel and food, and touched my heart with every segment!

Fantastic - but not the entire season and NO extras 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Anthony Bourdain is a real cook's cook and his wit really shines through in his TV series- No Reservations. The series is outstanding and there is nothing detracts from his show.

This first collection/season on DVD is fantastic but the thing that really "bites" (pun intended) is that the Uzbekistan episode is missing. Hence this is a "collection" of No Reservation instead of a "season". Was something so objectionable to that episode that it cannot be included in that set?! Everyone buys DVDs for extras and you would expect, well- extras. In this case, there are no extras. I would hope there would be out-takes, deleted scenes, additional commentary or behind the scenes but that is not the case. One feature that would be VERY nice would be the uncensored audio track in addition to the censored "bleeped" audio track that you could select as an alternative. Who wouldn't want to hear what Tony was REALLY thinking? :)

If you really like the series and don't already have a DVD-R, Tivo or digital copy, this is the best alternative. The production is first rate on this DVD series and the case design is outstanding. It's too funny that the Discovery Channel store doesn't carry this series at all. I can see a grey market for the missing DVD episodes from each of the seasons forming already...

The lady in this DVD makes you laugh. This is great for traveling to Bavaria and the surrounding areas.

The MOST Beautiful Travel Destination in Europe! 4 out of 5 stars.

I've traveled several times to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. It was fun to watch the DVD and be able to say "I've been there!" and "Oh wow! Remember that?" My main criticism: some of the featured hotels were way more expensive than necessary. When I travel to Europe I like to stay in 'Gasthofs', smaller family-owned inns that offer quaint rooms, usually with private baths. Breakfast is always included and usually features soft or hard-boiled eggs, various breads and 'broetchen' (the crunchy rolls), a variety of cheeses and jams, and sometimes sliced meats.

Overall, a great dvd.

Can't praise it enough 5 out of 5 stars.

I love this series. Samantha Brown is the perfect travelling companion. Her energy, excitement, and joy never fail. The shows hit a perfect balance between tourist info and intimate charm. I know Paris very well, and I agree with her observations about Paris, which makes me trust her when she is traveling in other parts of the world that I do not know (like Italy). Highlights on this DVD include: the two Paris eps (of course), an achingly beautiful fairy-tale village and hotel featured in the Cote d'Azur episode, and the Florence ep. I also should note that Samantha Brown travels in style. This is not Europe on a shoestring. Personnally, I love living vicariously through her. The beautiful hotels make this show all the more fun.
I recommend it to all who love to travel and dream and laugh.

Travel with Samantha 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great travel video. Samantha has a wonderful way of connecting with her audience and she makes it fun. Sometimes I wish she would show more of the visit. It's like a virtual trip when you can't get there in person.

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM: Samantha visits the royal chocolate supplier, enjoys the city's legendary waffles and is surprised to find the city's equivalent of a hotdog cart - an escargot stand! That's the kind of adventure that's easy to stomach.

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC: Behind the Iron Curtain until 1990, Prague has emerged as a top tourist destination. The city's breathtaking architecture, art, music and unique style are unlike anything you'll see anywhere else in the world.

AMSTERDAM, HOLLAND: Known for its laid-back attitude, Amsterdam is the perfect place to just hang out and soak up the atmosphere and history. Samantha hops on a bike to explore the tree-lined canals and colorful neighborhoods and checks into a houseboat for a different kind of hotel experience.

BARCELONA, SPAIN: Samantha experiences Barcelona's renowned nightlife as well as the surreal architecture of Antoni Gaudi. Stroll the picturesque medieval lanes, and explore the sidewalk markets and festive street celebrations.

MADRID, SPAIN: Sample the sensual city of Madrid with a visit to the famed Prado Museum, a stay in a hotel with a flair for the dramatic and a meal of unexpected local favorites - paella and hot chocolate.

SEVILLE, SPAIN: Bypass the frantic pace of a typical European vacation with a visit to Seville where locals think the world is moving way too fast. Moorish castles, Gothic cathedrals, Spanish wines and tapas await those ready to enjoy life to the fullest.

LISBON, PORTUGAL: This longtime city of adventure continues to be one of Europe's most exciting places. Samantha visits a coffeehouse to experience "fado," a music inspired by such emotion that no other nation has duplicated it, and stays in a luxury hotel that was formerly a royal palace.

What a great selection! 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this collection to use in teaching my communication courses at the graduate level.

I show segments from the 2057s in my Human Communication on the Internet course. Some students find some of the ideas disturbing, but all students find the information thought-provoking. The presentations of the 2057s are a little cheezy, but the content is great. The 2057s DVDs are a great way to help students picture the possible future of the Internet and computer use.

The giant panda special is one of the best ever made. Now follow me on this, if my veterinarian-daughter helps with the artificial insemination, then she's at least a little bit the father, and I'm the grandmother. (grin) They filmed this baby's life from planning through the first year, and it is the best documentary done on the topic of the giant panda. Plus, he's the cutest grandbaby ever!

I use Mythbusters as discussion prompts for teaching experimental research. By showing segments by these guys--and doing some of the experiments in class. We have a fun way to discuss the scientific method, variables, and other principles from the research. The students love the Myth Busters, and it makes an excellent prompt for discussing research and experimentation.
