This set of DVDs arrived in good time and condition. It is as beautiful as I expected it to be.

A peaceful and pleasant view of the planet 4 out of 5 stars.

Sunrise Earth is unobtrusive, serene, and stunning in its simplicity. No music, no narration, just footage of landscapes under the sunrise. It's perfect to wake up or fall asleep to, and a very calming addition to anyone's DVD library.

Recommended for nature lovers, fans of chill music and soundscapes, and anyone looking to relax.

Sunrise Earth DVD 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This DVD set has three DVD's and nine episodes of Sunrise Earth in various locations in the United States. The picture is excellent considering this is a standard definition DVD. It's probably the best standard definition DVD I have ever seen. The content is very good too.

The reason I give this only four stars is some of the programs have very annoying parts which detract from the enjoyment. For instance, the "Vermont Balloons" episode is a beautiful looking and sounding episode, until you are close-up and hear the blast of the heated air going into the balloon. Also there are two other episode with scenic water views and nature sounds, until a boat rolls by. I think they should have edited out those parts and kept it to just nature.

Nevertheless, I still recommend this product.

Editorial Review:

On every part of the planet, men and women are achieving the impossible. Mountains of earth are drilled, blasted and moved while massive structures are erected to tame and traverse great bodies of water. Join us for a globe-spanning look at some of the most astounding feats of EXTREME ENGINEERING as mankind soars to new heights of imagination and ingenuity in the struggle to meet the challenges of the modern world.

Episodes:

Widening the Panama Canal: Built more than 90 years ago, the canal was an engineering marvel, but to keep up with modern-day shipping demands, the old channel must be widened, presenting a mammoth set of challenges to the engineers and workmen.

Boston's Big Dig: One of the largest and most technically challenging infrastructure projects in American history, Boston's Big Dig encompasses an 8- to 10-lane-wide highway winding 120 feet underground through downtown Boston, a new tunnel beneath the city's harbor and the widest cable-stayed bridge in the world. After decades of planning and construction, this enormous undertaking promises to turn the bustling, congested "Bean Town" into a fast-moving city of tomorrow.

Building Hong Kong's Airport: When the citizens of Hong Kong needed a new international airport, they went 16 miles offshore to two islands that were then leveled and merged into one platform for a giant terminal and runway structure. And then a series of world-class highways, bridges and tunnels were created to connect the new airport to the city.

Tunneling Under the Alps: Deep below the scenic wonders of the Alps, an army of engineers and workers is creating the longest tunnel in the world in a hellish environment of deadly unstable rock and mud. When completed, the trans-alpine tunnel will turn the mountain range from a giant road block to a free- flowing corridor of goods and commerce moving across Europe.

Iceland Tunnels: On the desolate northeastern tip of Iceland, 100 miles south of the Arctic Circle, first-class excavation and construction crews, responsible for some of the greatest tunneling projects around the world, are attempting to burrow 45 miles and hundreds of feet underground in an audacious plan to turn ice into electricity.

Container Ships: Danish ship builders are attempting what was once unimaginable to their Viking forebears: to construct a monster container ship, a vessel, that when completed, will blow the rudders off the worldwide cargo shipping industry.

Oakland Bay Bridge: The new Bay Bridge will replace the most heavily traveled bridge in the United States: the spans linking San Francisco to Oakland and the East Bay. Now several years behind schedule, the pressure is on, but the unanticipated problems of building a $2.8 billion two-mile earthquake-proof road 300 feet in the air are tough to beat.

Venice Flood Gates: The engineers and builders are on a desperate mission...to keep Venice, Italy from becoming the next Atlantis. This enormous undertaking calls for 79 steel floodgates, each bigger than a football field and weighing over 300 tons.

The Essential Dinosaur Pack is more than 8 hours of dinosaur programs by the Discovery Channel. Lots of dinosaur action, groundbreaking discoveries, dinosaur facts, stories and just plain fun. Great for the kiddies and adults and something that makes a great gift for anybody, anytime, anywhere. The shows cover everything from telling us the story of the T. Rex, and the mystery of how he lived his life, to the ideas of bringing dinosaurs back to life via the DNA of birds. Raptors, fossils and birds, this is a wonderful peek into dinosaurs and how we see them.

Meerkat Manor is the ultimate reality show. 5 out of 5 stars.
16 of 17 people found this review helpful.

"Meerkat Manor" is a long running documentary series that takes place in the Kalahari Desert in Africa. Although commonly mistaken as rodents, meerkats are actually members of the Carnivora order, and specifically, they are a species of mongoose, Suricata suricatta. They live in social groups headed by a dominant female.

The long timespan of the series, the close up, intimate camera work, the naming of each individual (not just with a first name, but also a last name, which, as far as I know, is the first time that that has ever been done in an animal documentary), the fact that they stand on their hind legs, and the narrator's anthromorphization of the meerkats, lets us get to know these animals in a way that no other animal documentary ever has.

The camera work, film editing, and musical scoring all suggest that the people who made this series have a strong love of classic movies. The series is epic in scope, with many of the episodes having cliffhanger endings. This show is about life, death, sex, loyalty, romantic betrayal, jealousy, struggles for power, bravery, heroism, wars, battles, fights over territory, and sibling rivalry, all of which are part of human society. These things make "Meerkat Manor" the epitome of animal documentaries. Although a few new series have attempted to copy this series' format, all of those copycats have failed to meet this series' high standards of excellence.

As the warning at the beginning of every episode states, this show is about the real life and death events of the members of the "Whiskers" meerkat family and other meerkat families. Season 3 contained the real life deaths of a number of very important characters in this series. Since this is not a fictional show, these deaths impacted many viewers far more than they were accustomed to being affected by the deaths of fictional character on "regular" TV series, and several newspapers had articles about this.

Some parents of young children even stopped letting their children watch the show. While it's not my place to tell parents how to raise their children, and I admit that I don't even have any children of my own, I did have pets when I was a child. And from my own personal experiences, watching the real life deaths of my own pets, while sad, helped to make me a more sensitive and thoughtful person. So I think parents might be making a mistake when they stop letting their children watch this show. I think children could come out as better people for having seen season 3 in its entirely.

I should point out that meerkats cannot and should not be kept as pets. Although watching this show might tempt some parents to try to obtain meerkats for their children (the up close camera work makes them look big, but the truth is that adult meerkats actually only weigh about a pound and a half) you should never, ever keep one as a pet. As a child, I had green anoles, gerbils, guppies, and box turtles as pets, and I heartily and enthusiastically recommend those as pets. Do not get your child a meerkat, no matter how much he or she might beg!

Here are the 13 episodes from season 3, without any major spoiler information. The episode titles here are those for the region 1 (U.S. and Canada) DVD release of the show. Other countries may use different episode titles, a different narrator, and different names for some of the meerkats, in some of the episodes. The narrator here for the U.S. version is Sean Astin. Actually, when the show aired in Canada, the narrator was Bill Nighy, so Canadians who buy this DVD set may end up surprised that it has a different narrator than they are accustomed to. Here are the episodes:

On Dangerous Ground - The Whiskers meet their new neighbors and enemies, the Zappa. The Zappa's dominant male is named Frank. Frank Zappa. Heh heh. (For younger viewers who might now know, Frank Zappa was a popular music singer.)

The Mission - Mitch tries to reunite the Whiskers family, after several members had become separated and lost from the main group. There's a powerful scene transition at the end of this episode, which is a wonderful example of why I believe the people who made this series have a love of classic movies. First, they show the Whiskers family, who have just been victorious in their battle against the Zappas. The Whiskers are all happy and safe, the music is joyous, and the sky is brightly lit. Things are going very well, and everyone is optimistic about the future. Then it transitions to the Zappa family, who have just lost that same battle. The sky is dark. The music is sinister and ominous. The Zappa are very upset. They want revenge. This scene transition is as good as those of any fictional drama that I have ever seen. The makers of the show didn't have to do this, because all the necessary factual information had already been presented in earlier scenes. These two extra scenes, and the transition between them, is one of those extra touches that makes this show so great. Instead of doing the bare minimum that was necessary, the makers of the show went well above and beyond the call of duty, in order to achieve excellence.

Sister Act - Part of me wants to hate Kinkajou for what she does in this episode. But another part of me knows that, as horrible as it may seem, it is a normal part of meerkat behavior.

The Death Of Romance - It seems that the most powerful events in these episodes tend to happen at the end of the episode. This one is tragic. The title of the episode pretty much gives away the "what." I won't spoil it for you by giving away the "who."

Tale of Len and Squiggy - This episode is about Flowers' two new pups.

Sibling Rivalry - This is the first time that any meerkat in the process of stealing the position of dominance has ever been filmed. Actually, there are two different such overthrows within this episode.

Heavy the Crown - We learn why Flower is the true leader of the Whiskers. She is the only one capable of keeping the gang (groups of meerkats really are called gangs) together.

Journey's End - This is the pivotal episode of the series. Nothing will ever be the same after this episode. Grown men have been known to cry after watching this one. Sean Astin's eulogy is as moving as any that I have heard heard.

A New Day - No matter how horrible the events in your life are, you still have to wake up the next day and face the world. This is the beginning of a whole new way of life for the Whiskers.

Farewell My Lovely - Zaphod rules! This is one of the most fun episodes of the series. There's a wonderful camera shot of Zaphod standing on his hind legs, with the camera rotating around him, and the narrator says (these are not necessarily his exact words, as my memory is not perfect) "Although it should be very rough for Zaphod, he's having the time of his life." There's more to that scene and narration, but that's enough to let you know the scene that I am talking about. The camera work and narration in this scene are absolutely brilliant. Then at the end of the episode, after Zaphod had experienced some major disappointments, the camera shows Zaphod standing up on a hill, overlooking the vast expanse of the Kalahari, and the narrator says (again, these are not necessarily his exact words) "But Zaphod is made of stronger stuff than those who have come before him." Again, there's more to that scene and narration, but that's enough to let you know the scene that I am talking about. They didn't have to do either of these scenes. But they did. These are more examples of those extra touches that make this series so exciting to watch. Both of these complete scenes, and their complete narrations (which have far more words than what I have quoted here) are examples of why I absolutely love this show so much.

Three Degrees of Separation - No matter how much I might hate what Kinkajou did earlier in this season, I can't help but feel very sad for her in this episode. Some of the camera shots of her show what true suffering really is. This is quite a tragic episode. Some people have criticized the show for including these scenes, but I think these scenes, so up close and personal, are exactly what make this series so great.

The Graduate - There's really no letting up on how tough life in the Kalahari is. This episode is another very sad one, and as usual, the saddest part happens at the end of the episode.

A Family at War - Toward the end up this episode, the narrator says (and this time my memory is 100% accurate) "Maybe it's Maybelline." That's a reference to an advertising slogan for a leading cosmetics company. No, it's not a paid placement - the writers did it to see if anyone was paying attention, not for financial reward. It's just a really funny and clever pop culture reference, and I think it's brilliant.

I warn you, I've only seen parts of it, but from what I have have seen I think it's it's fairly good. The graphics are wonderful. Diana: The US has "high" infant mortality rates due to the fact that in government statistics any death up to a year old is considered "infant mortality", other countries largely do not do this.

Outdated 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This video is outdated for anyone who is interested in seeing a variety of birth options.
The most helpful parts were the viewings of the developing fetus while the moms were "doing their lives" daily. To me this gave a real sense of life growing while mom's life was happening. I was disappointed in the actual birth scenes since all moms were lying on their backs in hospital beds, often being offered various interventions to "help" with pain.

Terrible! 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

At 7 months pregnant with my second child, I enjoyed this movie until I got tired of how often they reiterated how painful, practically impossible, and scary pregnancy and childbirth are. I mean, "Childbirth is like trying to fit a softball down your throat?" And they went on and on about how it should be physically impossible, how painful it is... all while showing moms in labor lying on their backs in hospital beds, hooked up to IVs and fetal monitors not being offered any pain relief (like walking around or being massaged or having a shower or a bath or any other comfort measures) until they finally "give in" and have the epidural... It's another ridiculous example of how our media distorts birth and helps cause our high cesarean rates and poor fetal outcomes. My young son was with me, and even he had the sense to say at the beginning, when they took a baby away from the mom immediately, "hey! that baby wants to be with its mother." I do have to say the images of the babies in the moms' bellies while they walked around were pretty awesome. But there was hardly any of that, unfortunately, and the rest of the video isn't worth watching to get to them.

Those loveable little varmints 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Season Two of "Meerkat Manor," a 2-disc set issued in April, 2008, brings us back into the orbit of several packs of African meerkats, competing for resources and trying to survive in the harsh, arid climate of the Kalahari Desert.

This is the American version of the show, adapted from the British original with some tinkering and trimming to make it more suitable for the family-oriented Animal Planet cable channel... But the essence of the story remains the same: a band of meerkats, nicknamed the Whiskers and led by a tough matriarch named Flower, battle with two neighboring groups in confrontations that, at first, look comical -- those cute little critters bouncing up and down and bobbing their way across the desert en masse -- but often turns deadly. The Whiskers survive one attack on their nest, with the helpless pups the target of several dozen adult invaders, but when this drama has played out and we begin to empathize with the Whiskers troop, they swiftly turn around and try the same thing themselves, attempting to murder the infants of the other tribe in exactly the same way.

Indeed, this shows the problem with this show: although it is compelling viewing (and hard to pry yourself away from) eventually it becomes clear that none of the animals are really all that sympathetic. Meerkats have a complex social order and survive through cooperative behavior, but the veneer of their civilization is quite thin. There is fierce violence not just against other bands of meerkats, but within each family group as well. No pack members are angels, and the drama soon becomes a neverending narrative of aggression, suffering and dominance. Also, their situation never really changes -- meerkats have lived at a subsistence level in the desert for eons, and the struggles of their lives are cyclical and don't essentially change much at all.

This, of course, raises the question of whether, on some level, the same might be said of humans, whether we too make the same kinds of calculations and errors as meerkats or other animals. The highly detailed study of this group's life gives us a better stick to measure ourselves next to... And perhaps the sympathy we feel for these nervous, often ruthless little critters comes from a more accurate reflection of ourselves than we would care to admit. Season Two of the show shows the formula still going strong -- one wonders what surprises Season Three might hold. (Slipcue film reviews)

Triumph and mishap, comedy and tragedy - everything a good story needs, but this one is different, it stars a group of wild meerkats in South Africa. This ground-breaking thirteen part series records the daily lives of a group of meerkats known as & The Whiskers. Using state of the art camera technology above and below ground, and by tracking the group's movements 24 hours a day, the series paints a dramatic picture of a year in their highly complex and social lives. The show is narrated by Sean Astin of Lord of the Rings.

Hi Folks,

The book is well worth the read and the series would have been worth your time as well... but... the problem is that they chose the worst possible people to view these places through the eyes of and it ruins the experience. These are perhaps the worst hosts ever for a travel series. They aren't appreciative of the journey and don't ask interesting questions or add anything of value to the show on any level. In fact, I'd buy this if they had a version that simply eliminated their words and ever showing their face and just included the raw footage of the places. It's really that bad. With a world of enthusiastic (and educated) tourists or guides to choose from who would have viewed this as the opportunity of a life time and demonstrated some respect for the places they were going by perhaps learning anything about them in advance to prepare themselves to show the world, why they chose these two mopes is beyond me. I found myself (and my wife as well) getting angry at the show each time we watched because these people were ruining it all. Save yourself the annoyance and buy other travel DVD's from the same places and you'll be much happier. Rick Steves has a wonderful box set of Europe where he educates and moves you over each place he sees. He has respect for both the places and the viewer. Samantha Brown, who is very different, also has some nice episodes. Rudy Maxa, who does his show on PBS is another wonderful option. Frankly, ANYTHING is better than this. (Heck, stare at some postcards and you'll get more out of it without the frustration). I also suggest going to Google Earth and looking at all the amazing photos that users have posted all around the world. There's so many better ways to experience the world, even if you can't travel there yourself. Don't waste the excitement of these fantastic's places on these unappreciative, misinformed and ignorant self absorbed people. Yuck.

Pass on this one! 1 out of 5 stars.

The crew who put these shows together must have been hired from the MTV music video crew. The nauseously 'stylish' shakey cameras; the antiquated, jerky, strobe, 1980's "Max Headroom" effects; the "Matrix" speed-up flying camera effects; and the constant, hyperfast changing edits; allows little or no room to truly enjoy the High-Def scenery pulsated before your eyes! This kind of pace may be good for a 3 minute music video, but not for a 50-some minute documentary. They are trying way too hard to be 'cool'. Perhaps some prefer this style.
This is no "Planet Earth" series by any means. The small selection of CGI clips are repeated over, over, and over agian, many of them reapear in all 6 episodes. Spiced with sand and water-surfing, bicycle-riding, rock climbing (with climbers who always manage to drop-a-rock every climb) to add 'action' to the documentary. There are and will be more truly jaw-dropping, scenic and informative documentaries in HD to enjoy. Go for those. I have, and enjoy many documentaries of all types, these are the worse of all.
