Excellent series! 5 out of 5 stars.

This 2-disc set presents 4 episodes focused on different areas in which the human body is "pushing the limits": sight, strength, sensation, & brain power. I have actually shown some clips in my general psychology class as the material is presented in an easy to follow & interesting format -- perfect for freshmen! For anyone who is a Discovery Channel geek like myself, whether you're an educator or it's just a hobby (or both), this is a must-have for your collection. My only regret is that I bought it directly from the Discovery Channel website rather than Amazon.com -- I could've saved about $15!

Entertaining and Educational--Highly Recommended!! 5 out of 5 stars.

Outstanding! This show premiered back in March and it absolutely blew me away.

I agree with fellow reviewers that this DVD will appeal to students. It's educational, engaging, and very entertaining. The groundbreaking CGI effects displays the human body like never before. Also, the amazing real-life stories are riveting. From the ordinary to the extraordinary, there are great survival lessons to be learned, and how our bodies push to every extreme and challenge.

In addition to this DVD, I also highly recommend NGC's National Geographic - Incredible Human Machine, which further explores the physiological functions and inner organs of the human body. For the life of me, I don't know why it's labeled as being produced in 1975. The documentary premiered late '07, if I recall correctly. Anyway, it complements DC's series very well.

If you want to know why the human body is the greatest machine ever created, then do yourself a favor. Buy these DVDs!

Editorial Review:

You've never seen the human body like this before. In this groundbreaking series, we push the human form to its extremes, capturing both the power and the poetry. You will be surprised and even shocked as stunning CGI effects and the latest in cutting-edge photography reveal the body's inner and outer workings in vivid detail.

Engaging, inspirational, fun 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Surprisingly, I am enjoying the Little People Big World. The show features a mixed stature family from Oregon, Matt and Amy Roloff, twins Zach and Jeremy; Molly and Jacob. The parents and one child, the twin Zach, are born little people.

Since Matt spent much of his youth in hospitals, his dreams as a child have become real with his family. Matt is entrepreneurial, a doer (or more like a supervisor of the doers) and inspirational and this little man is committed to his dreams, his challenge to life. With health issues, his physical work is limited.

On the 34-acre farm, what child would not have enjoyed that magical and playful spread that includes a Pirate Ship, Tree House and a Western Town. The farm brings in money from corporate parties, tours, selling peaches, etc.,

Amy, more of a realist than Matt, works two jobs, one being a soccer coach. The house is a mess and Zach can be a little pill with his lack of respect to his dad at times. Season one shows a camping trip with the boys and friends, driver's license, etc.

But you can enjoy life through the eyes of the Roloff family. Although I never did see the TLC show, I enjoy having a first view through DVD....Rizzo

Editorial Review:

TLC's critically-acclaimed series follows the Roloff family, a normal family in every way but one. At just four feet tall, parents Matt and Amy are living and thriving in a world that wasn't made for them. With three average height children - 15 year-old Jeremy, 12 year-old Molly and 9-year old Jacob - and one little person son, Jeremy's twin brother Zachary, the Roloffs are finding their way on their 34-acre farm in Oregon. This intimate TLC documentary series, hailed by critics as "irresistible," "engaging" and "enthralling," captures the lives of the Roloffs and gives a glimpse into what life is like for little people living in a big world.

THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL'S TOP-SELLING DOCUMENTARY! Two heart-warming, extraordinary experiences on one disc! For centuries, wolves have been characterized as bloodthirsty beasts, tormentors of ranchers and the bane of helpless livestock. Little People Matt and Amy Roloff may only be four feet tall, but they are determined to make the world their own. Raising four children, a mixture of Little and average size-siblings aged 9 to 16, the Roloffs are struggling under emotional and financial burdens. As for the kids, they play with wild abandon on the Roloff's lush 30-acre farm in the outskirts of Portland, Oregon. The eldest children, twins Jeremy and Zach, are in stark contrast to each other: Jeremy is average height while Zach is a little person.

Grab this one! Close to 7 hours with the bonus extras! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Don't hesitate on this one! Grab it! The second season PLUS what in my opinion is an equally important bonus area of discussion [all visual material] including various of the series participants and extra input from those who need no introduction to their high altitude climbing credentials and mountaineering achievements. So too, in the bonus material, the hard questions [read: TV documentary criticisms] of the documentary on Everest are not avoided nor in any way sugar-coated. You're looking at approximately 7 hours of visual material here between the TV episodes and the added bonus discussion material consisting of 4 extended episodes entitled, "Everest: After the Climb" . You absolutely can't beat it for under $15.00! This was the price [$14.97] when I did the review.

I'll lay my cards on the table and as I always do especially if commenting on films [documentary or fiction!] or books that deal with the climbing and/or mountaineering community. I'm tired of seeing Russell Brice used as a sort of handy and proverbial punching bag and especially by, inter alia, various and sundry types who wouldn't know a belay from a ballet or whose knowledge of high altitude climbing and its 'realities' wholly escapes them. Still others take the view that Brice is somehow the perceived "culprit" and allegedly 'responsible' [!?] for the David Sharp matter [2006] as if Russell had some hidden magic wand and could simply wave it around a few times and, voila, some 20 Sherpas could be made to suddenly materialize from his tent to initiate high altitude rescues of virtually anyone in trouble and regardless of altitude issues or weather considerations.

The bonus material addresses various of these considerations. But it also addresses the 'realities' of high altitude climbing in general. For example, the question is put on the table in virtually any mountain rescue attempt by the narrator: Does it come down to a matter of "who should be or shouldn't be rescued" and Brice responds, rightly so in my opinion, that it has nothing to do with who 'should' or 'shouldn't be' rescued issues but rather a more realistic appraisal of "who CAN be rescued" and whether it is 'possible' and logistically feasible to do it! You don't produce the resources for a mountain rescue out of nothing! Or 'thin air', as it were. And the weather at hand is a significant factor not to mention the perils of the higher one climbs or the intricacies/complexities of the route. Naturally, there are always the exceptions to the rule who almost miraculously are saved but then these exceptions become the benchmarks for those who know nothing about high altitude climbing making with, "See! 'X' and 'Y' were saved! Why not 'Z' ?" It's simply not that easy! Look at the cumulative mountaineering experience of both Rob Hall and Scott Fischer [1996] but factors were present on the mountain that day which precluded their rescue. Folks can't relate that 'feet/meters' can be like 'miles/kilometers' in places like Everest and K2 [et al] -- that's something they just can't comprehend not to mention navigation issues during a white-out or numbing cold 'despite' protective and modern insulation gear.

In any event, I think the visual discussion material following the second season episodes is well worth the listen! And the realities of high altitude mountaineering. We're also in the age of so-termed "adventure tourism" with a literal proliferation of various world-wide commercial entities offering to take clients to "you name it" but it's also true, IMO, that some of these clients have no business being at places like Everest or K2 where their prior climbing experience is virtually negligible not to mention altitude issues where some actually believe that the use of bottled oxygen brings them to 'sea level' breathing or that fixed ropes right to the summit itself 'assures a summit' --- NOTHING is 'assured' since it can't be! And it's not 'just' the weather to force one back, it's a whole gammut of factors than can go wrong and at 'any' level on the mountain much less over 26,000 feet. Client temperament(s) notwithstanding.

It seems to me that certain websites have almost dedicated themselves to Russell Brice bashing with a veritable laundry list litany of J'accuse mongering so that if Russell can't pull off ad hoc rescue miracles while pulling rescuers from his derriere, as it were, or indeed take 'anyone' to the summit and back no matter how they are faltering or showing their lack of experience and/or physical stamina limitations on the trial runs, ahh, then he's the proverbial and alleged "don't give a ****" bad guy! Sherpas and guides are NOT there to die for the aspirations of the client especially, I'll add at once, for the client who despite literal hours of cajoling and pleading to turn back, proceed forward and perhaps expect and damn the consequences to both themselves and others -- or to be hand-held or short-roped to their dream. In the series, various 'did' finally listen to reason and turned back but the reality is that some do not despite the best efforts of others [including climbing partners or expedition leaders in some scenarios] to reason with them. And some of them are still up there. Or indeed, miraculously rescued 'by' the climbing community ... at least when feasible and possible to do so.

I'm a big fan of the Sunrise series. I'm waiting for the release of Asia and Europe. I own the America Sunrises as well as the Ancient world. This one fits in the middle. Ancient World is boring, America's is awesome. The Seaside I expected more beach sunrises in cleaner locations.

This show is fake--here's proof 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Do not confuse Man vs. Wild with Les Stroud's Survivorman, which is the real deal. In Survivorman, Stroud really is by himself in a survival situation, with nothing but the clothes on his back, limited supplies and his camera equipment so that he can film himself. Man vs. Wild, on the other hand, has become an embarrassment for the Discovery Channel, which now claims that all episodes of the show will be more honestly edited to show the viewer what is really happening (i.e., that the show is fake).

This is not to say that Bear Grylls is not a survival expert, but merely reflects the fact that much of the show is completely phony. For one thing, Bear is followed by a camera crew, who, contrary to the show's initial claims, regularly helps him out. For another, Bear is regularly aided by survival consultants. He did not, for example, build the raft that the show depicted him building. Most embarrassing of all to the Discovery Channel was the discovery that many of the situations that Bear finds himself in are entirely staged; they are not incidents that he just happens upon while surviving in the wild.

The Discovery Channel always prided itself on the accuracy and honesty of its shows (unlike, say, the History Channel), and so, because of this revelation, and after momentarily dumping unaired episodes of Man vs. Wild, now will only air the show with text disclaimers at the bottom of the screen explaining to the viewer what is actually happening, but in a positive light of course. So, instead of reading, "This scene was entirely staged," text will appear saying something like, "On some occasions situations are presented to Bear so he can demonstrate survival techniques."

After a huge controversy erupted when it came to light that Bear was not always sleeping in the campsites the show depicted him constructing (but was instead sleeping cozily in a nearby hotel room!), the Discovery Channel now requires Bear to admit such things. In one episode, after lighting a fire, he said, "I'm not staying the night, but this would make a good place to camp." Another fake part of the show was the success of Bear's traps. What would really happen is that the trap would catch nothing but an animal was brought to him by the crew so that he could act like he was successful. He now must admit (at least some of the time) when the crew is helping him.

People who actually know about real survival techniques often laugh at how Bear Grylls conducts himself, leaping about and running and unnecessarily risking injury at every turn. Les Stroud would be ashamed of him. In the end, Man vs. Wild can be entertaining, but it should be viewed as a staged show depicting somewhat useful survival techniques. It should NOT be viewed as a documentary depicting real survival techniques in action. If you still don't believe that Man vs. Wild is fake, go to Youtube and watch the clip entitled Man vs. Wild, Bear Grylls is a fake. It depicts good old Bear Grylls acting like he is trying to cross a "dangerous lava bridge" in the middle of nowhere. If you keep watching, the camera pans back and reveals that Bear is in fact just walking on some rocks immediately to the right of a busy highway! Deception at its finest.

I don't understand why this show is about meerkats, they aren't even cute, what was animal planet thinking. This show should be about cute cuddly kittie cats.

Editorial Review:

Triumph and mishap, comedy and tragedy - everything a good story needs, but this one is different, it stars a group of wild meerkats in South Africa. This ground-breaking thirteen part series records the daily lives of a group of meerkats known as "The Whiskers". Using state of the art camera technology above and below ground, and by tracking the group's movements 24 hours a day, the series paints a dramatic picture of a year in their highly complex and social lives. From viscous fights with rival gangs to infighting within the group, snake attacks, births of two dozen pups, and tragic deaths, "Meerkat Manor" includes animal behavior never recorded before. With characters that would be more at home in a real life soap opera, their entangled lives make for addictive viewing. MEERKAT MANOR is All My Children meets Wild Kingdom. The show is narrated by Sean Astin of "Lord of the Rings" and"24."
