More school - less pretend 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought this DVD because my 3 year old is starting preschool. It has lots of singing and dancing but could focus more on the actual things that my son should expect to do in school. My son is convinced that his school will have a giant, multi-shaped bubble blower now! It's a fun DVD but doesn't help very much to prepare kids for school.

wonderful but presents an idealized world 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This really is a wonderful DVD that hits all the basics of preschool education such as discriminating between colors and shapes, learning to count, recognizing letters, etc. My one criticism is that it presents a world so idealized that few children will be able to relate to it. No one except Baby Bop for a few seconds has a problem, no one stops smiling. It's relentlessly cheerful to the point that you wonder if the producers have ever read any child psychology that discusses that huge and immense fears and aggressive urges that children have to learn to master. Fairy tales like Grimms have captivated children for centuries--why do the producers of this Barney video think that they must extract all negativity to only present the sunny side of life. I'm not saying I want a gloomy Barney but this video is so over the top happy that it is essentially a fantasy world not having much connection to any school its child viewers will ever encounter. Nevertheless, I give it 5 stars because despite this flaw, it has a lot going for it, and when viewed in the context of other DVDs like Mr. Rogers (who definitely deals with anger, fear, etc.) it all balances out. Nevertheless, if you're going to go with Barney, I would recommend the Rhyme Time DVD, which, by the way, also includes a section of numbers and the alphabet.

Editorial Review:

With a little help from Barney and a big imagination, the children enjoy a fun-filled day at "Baby Bop's School" where every lesson includes unexpected surprises. Join Ashley, Hannah, Robert and Jeff as they sing an alphabet song, read in Baby Bop's book center, eat macaroni and cheese, and bounce into gym class. When the day is just about done, settle in with Baby Bop and her "blankey" for an afternoon nap. It's an unforgettable day of learning and laughter.

With the deal struck between Nickelodeon and Amazon, we finnaly have various titles being released that I thought we would never see. Thank you Amazon! Now if only you could strike the same deal with Buena Vista Home Entertainment and get titles like X-Men, Spiderman, MMPR, and Digimon in Region 1 boxsets. I would gladly pay my hard earned money for titles like that.

Dear Journal... 4 out of 5 stars.

The second season of Doug (1992) is a step up from the first season that started it all in terms of animation and music. This 3-Disc set features classics with Doug eating liver and onions, Doug's song about Patti, and Doug's lucky hat. One thing that struck me the most in this set was the quality of original music used on the show, especially in the episode of Doug's lucky hat. The show also continues to hold up well with it's cultural references to television (Arsenio Hall, American Gladiators) and film (James Bond). Doug is a true example of childrens programming in the early 90s and is a great show to revisit.

Amazon and Nick, these sets are the closest thing fans have come to owning one of their favorite shows of the past on DVD. I hope you release the third and final fourth seasons on DVD of Doug, which you own the rights to. There are also other shows that deserve the light of day: Rugrats, the third season of Pete and Pete, the Angry Beavers, Ahhh! Real Monsters, Salute Your Shorts, and COMPLETE season sets of Rocko's Modern Life. It took awhile to get a hold of these because they were delayed in being shipped, so hopefully that's a sign that there is a demand for these.

Decided not to buy based on reviews 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

After reading the reviews here I've decided not to buy this disk and just keep watching them on youtube where they are mostly unedited.

Which is a shame because it would be nice to sit on the couch and see them on the big screen.

I'm generally not so picky about things, but think it's crazy that these cartoons are being edited, and really underestimates the intelligence of most viewers.

These are works are art, only we tend not to view them that way because they are cartoons and most of us adults watched them on TV on Saturday mornings. But when you consider not only the animation--which is as good as it gets--but the music, the cultural references, they really do stand out as important works of art.

We don't edit offensive things in art museums, or important novels because it would be like altering history. Please stop editing the old classic cartoons.

    Editorial Review:

The Tom-and-Jerry legacy chases through every nook and cranny of the classic animation pantheon, spanning six decades and several famous directors. Looney Tunes icons Friz Freleng, Tex Avery and Chuck Jones all played their part. But the enduring cat-and-mouse team was the brainchild of William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Their first short Puss Gets the Boot (in which Tom was called Jasper) was released with little fanfare. Fellow animators did not consider a cat-pursuing-mouse scenario too exciting or original. But when unleashed on exhibitors and audiences, their hilariously diabolical rivalry delighted everyone. This 2-disc set of 40 restored and remastered shorts (along with fabulous celebratory bonuses) includes nine Academy Award nominees and seven winners. And with this in hand, you're a winner too!

Not Quite as Expected... : ( 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Ok, I'm an anime fan at heart. I recently bought my 92nd anime show and am still going on... Dragonball GT was the first anime I've collected. When i heard about the actual dvd coming out remastered and in a Season box set, I got really excited and expected lots; especially since I've really LOVED the Dragonball Z Season sets (GO ANDROIDS!!) But anyways, for some strange reason, my best buy likes to put things on shelf a week before they are REALLY supposed to be released. Knowing this, I hopped on over and purchased the season 1 set. Little did I know, the format of the show had completely changed. First of all, I like my anime how it's supposed to be and I can't stand when the american companies mess with the original japanese footage and stuff. Funimation changed the logo of "Dragonball GT" in both the original Japanese and English opening theme credits. They also completely took off the American Rap Opening Credits (which I wasn't much of a fan of) and switched it with some other person singing the original Japanese Opening with English words (no offense to the singer). For those that like the rap, sorry it's gone. Also, the screen is in Full Screen, not Widescreen. (Not that that matters to me). I could tell in certain parts of the show that it WAS remastered, but it wasn't that much of a difference from the original dvd releases Funimation did 3-4 years ago. Also, in the orginal releases, there was Japanese characters at the bottom of the screen for the original Japanese themes that played, but in this set, they completely took those off! I can't read Japanese, but taking off the words was still kind of like..."Why?" I don't mean to sound mean and I know it's just a dvd, but it was really not what I expected when I bought it. The only good thing that I liked was the fact that they had the English voice actors with the original Japanese music in the background. But the music seemed a bit quieter than the voices and sounds itself. Well, that's basically it. The box cover and back looks cool and all, but yeah. I think I've said what I wanted to say. If you don't mind the set containing and cutting the things that I mentioned, then price wise, it's WELL worth it. It contains the entire first half of the show and it's an easy way to see most of it if you haven't already. Funimation is great, but I've never really seen a problem like this before. The season itself is fairly long and still the show is enjoyable...so get it if you haven't....regaurdless of whatever set or individual dvds you purchase. ;)

My 20 month old loves this movie. She begs to watch it before she goes to bed. It is one of her favorites. The songs are very engaging.

The best Barney DVD out there 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I should know, I think I've gotten them all through Netflix at some point. This is my 20 month old son's very fave. There is no filler, they basically jump from one song to the next so even a child with zero attention span like mine won't get bored. The production value is high and all the songs are so cute! Defnitely worth adding to your library.

If your child is a Barney freak, also try searching for Sing Along with Barney, which is a CD personalized to many children's names. For example if your child's name is Michael, Barney will put the word Michael over 80 times in the songs within the CD. They have a lot of names out there. SO CUTE!

The Flinstones TV series 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have loved the Flinstones since I was a child & was very happy to hear about a complete set. I had never seen them on discs before this set, which I'm now finding out that was available a while back. I've only had a chance to watch the 1st season & I love it. My kids & I have had lots of laughs over it. I like the storage case it's in & even like the little booklets that hold the DVDs because they remind you of story books. However, I don't like the little booklets for holding my DVDs. I had a hard time removing them all from the sleeves when I received it. I have hard cases & another container that I placed them all in (24 cases I believe). I don't want my DVDs scratched & that's what's going to happen if I leave them in the sleeves they sent them in. I thought that was cheaply & poorly done. Looks like they could have created the same style in a hard DVD cases with lock in holders instead of cheap cardboard that just slides in. If they had of been packaged right, I would have given them 5 stars, but I'm rating it 4 stars because of packaging & almost leaned toward 3 stars.
